Best racing games on PS5 if you like Gran Turismo 7

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Gran Turismo 7 is still the broad all-rounder on PS5, combining a large car collection, structured progression and circuit racing. If you want a different emphasis, choose Assetto Corsa Competizione for a deeper GT3 simulation, F1 25 for licensed Formula 1, EA Sports WRC for rally stages, or The Crew Motorfest for open-world driving with a lighter arcade feel.

The right alternative depends less on which game is “best” and more on whether you want closed circuits or a free-roaming map, technical vehicle behavior or immediate accessibility, and a wheel-focused simulator or a game designed to work comfortably with a controller.

Quick picks for Gran Turismo 7 players

  • Closest technical circuit alternative: Assetto Corsa Competizione. It concentrates on GT3 racing and models tire grip, aerodynamics, suspension, electronics and damage in detail.
  • Best for Formula 1: F1 25. It is the licensed single-seater option, with a revamped My Team mode and the third chapter of Braking Point.
  • Best for rally: EA Sports WRC. It shifts the focus from lap-based racing to point-to-point stages, pace notes and loose surfaces, with official WRC, WRC2 and Junior WRC content from the 2023 season.
  • Best for open-world variety: The Crew Motorfest. Its Hawaiian setting, free roaming and event variety make it the most immediate change of pace from GT7.
  • Best hardware upgrade for simulation: A PS5-compatible racing wheel with pedals and force feedback. It is most valuable in GT7, Assetto Corsa Competizione, F1 25 and EA Sports WRC.

How these games differ from Gran Turismo 7

GT7 works as a reference point because it covers several kinds of driving in one package. You can collect and tune many cars, follow a progression loop and spend most of your time on closed circuits. The alternatives below deliberately narrow or redirect that experience.

Assetto Corsa Competizione narrows the garage to the GT3 discipline so that vehicle behavior and repeatable circuit practice receive more attention. F1 25 replaces multi-class car collecting with a season-specific Formula 1 presentation. EA Sports WRC removes the circuit entirely for timed stages on changing surfaces. The Crew Motorfest trades simulation intensity for a large Hawaiian map and an arcade-oriented event structure.

  • Experience true next-generation gaming with increased visual fidelity through 4K graphics, and 60FPS for a faster and smoother race experience
  • 2021 Liveries: Updated liveries from the 2021 season

  • Advanced Multiplayer Functionality: Includes a new fair-play ranking system (rewarding virtuous players), solid matchmaking, regular challenges, and a real-time online leader-board

That division also explains why there is no universal replacement. A player who wants “more GT7” should start with Assetto Corsa Competizione; someone who wants a different motorsport discipline will be happier with F1 25 or EA Sports WRC; and someone who wants to leave the track should choose The Crew Motorfest.

Assetto Corsa Competizione: the focused GT3 simulator

Why it is the closest fit for a technical GT7 fan

Assetto Corsa Competizione is the most direct alternative when your favorite part of GT7 is learning a circuit and extracting consistent lap times. It concentrates on GT3 racing rather than trying to represent every automotive category. That smaller scope is intentional: the game can devote its attention to how a GT3 car’s tire grip, aerodynamics, suspension, electronic aids and damage affect the car from corner to corner.

Expect a more specialized experience than GT7’s broad garage and progression loop. You are choosing a technical racing environment, not another general-purpose collection game. If you enjoy comparing hundreds of road and race cars, GT7 remains the better fit. If you would rather practice the same circuit repeatedly and understand why the car behaves differently as grip changes, Assetto Corsa Competizione is the stronger choice.

Solo play and practice

The solo structure rewards deliberate practice. Work on braking points, corner exits and consistency before chasing a single spectacular lap. Its value increases when you treat each session as preparation for a race: learn the circuit, settle on a predictable setup, then manage tires and mistakes over a full distance.

This approach can feel slower than GT7’s collection-driven progression. That is the trade-off for depth. The game gives the technically minded player a narrower set of variables to master instead of constantly introducing unrelated cars and activities.

Controller versus wheel

A controller is usable, especially if you adjust steering and throttle sensitivity to avoid abrupt inputs. A wheel with pedals and force feedback is the natural upgrade, because it lets you feel loading through the steering and make finer corrections under braking and acceleration. You do not need a wheel to learn the game, but the hardware makes its detailed vehicle model easier to read.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if GT3 authenticity and repeatable circuit practice matter more than a large car list.
  • Choose GT7 instead if you want broader vehicle variety, collecting and a more expansive progression loop.
  • Use a wheel if you plan to spend long sessions refining pace; a controller remains a sensible starting point.

F1 25: the licensed Formula 1 alternative

What changes from GT7

F1 25 is built around single-seater racing and the identity of a Formula 1 season. Rather than selecting from a broad range of road and GT machinery, you race licensed teams and cars on the championship calendar. That makes it the clearest recommendation for a player whose interest has moved from general circuit driving to Formula 1 specifically.

PlayStation highlights a revamped My Team mode and the third chapter of Braking Point. My Team is the management-and-driving route for building a team around your own participation, while Braking Point provides a more directed story campaign. These modes give the solo player two different structures: an ongoing team project and a scripted narrative.

Driving feel and race length

Formula 1 cars reward precise braking, clean exits and confidence through high-speed corners. The visual presentation and licensed context make each race feel like part of a season rather than an isolated track event. You should expect less emphasis on collecting different vehicle classes and more emphasis on learning one category of high-downforce car.

A controller is a practical way to play, particularly if you prefer shorter races or want accessible assists. A wheel becomes more useful as you turn assists down and run longer events, where smooth steering and repeatable pedal pressure matter. The game is still approachable without a cockpit, so hardware should follow your commitment rather than be a prerequisite.

Who should choose it

  • Choose F1 25 for licensed Formula 1 teams, season-specific presentation, My Team and Braking Point.
  • Choose Assetto Corsa Competizione if you want GT3 cars and a less story-led, more concentrated circuit simulator.
  • Choose GT7 if your priority is switching among many vehicle types instead of staying within single-seaters.

EA Sports WRC: rally stages instead of laps

The fundamental difference

EA Sports WRC changes the question from “How fast can I complete this lap?” to “How accurately can I drive an unknown stage from start to finish?” Rally is point-to-point. You read pace notes, place the car on changing surfaces and recover from errors without the safety of a familiar runoff area or repeated corner sequence.

PlayStation describes official WRC, WRC2 and Junior WRC cars, drivers, teams and liveries from the 2023 season. That official structure matters if you follow the championship and want the recognized categories represented rather than a generic off-road game.

Why GT7 players may enjoy the switch

Rally still rewards braking discipline, weight transfer and accurate throttle control, but the rhythm is different. Loose surfaces reduce grip, stages are read through pace notes and the route is not a closed loop you can memorize in the same way as a circuit. The result is a more reactive form of driving that tests concentration as much as outright pace.

Because stages are self-contained, you can build a useful solo routine: run a stage slowly to learn its notes, increase speed once the surface and braking zones feel predictable, then review where mistakes cost the most time. This is a different kind of progression from collecting cars or shaving tenths from one circuit.

Controller versus wheel

A controller offers quick corrections and is a comfortable entry point, especially while you are learning how much steering lock each surface permits. A wheel and pedals provide finer control over throttle modulation and countersteering, but they also demand more space and setup effort. Rally players should prioritize a stable pedal position and consistent steering before adding more equipment.

Who should choose it

  • Choose EA Sports WRC if you want official rally categories, pace notes, loose surfaces and point-to-point stages.
  • Choose a circuit game if repeated lap practice and predictable braking markers are what you enjoy most.
  • Use a controller first if you are new to rally; add a wheel when you want more precise corrections rather than because it is mandatory.

The Crew Motorfest: open-world variety and a lighter feel

A change of pace from circuit simulators

The Crew Motorfest is the outlier in this group. Its events take place in a Hawaiian open-world setting, so you can move between activities without selecting a single closed circuit as your entire session. The emphasis is variety and free roaming, with an arcade-oriented feel that makes it easier to drive immediately than a technical simulator.

This is the recommendation for the player who likes the idea of cars but does not want every session to be a test of braking points, tire behavior or race discipline. You can explore, switch activities and treat the map as a driving playground. The trade-off is that it does not pursue the same narrow realism as Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Solo and social use

The open map gives solo play a different shape from GT7’s track selection. Instead of moving from one contained race to another, you can use the world itself as the connective tissue between themed events. That structure suits short sessions, exploration and players who enjoy varied objectives more than a carefully optimized race weekend.

Its social and event-based design also makes it a natural choice when your group wants to drive together without agreeing on one simulation discipline. For serious lap-time analysis, however, a closed-circuit game remains more focused.

Controller versus wheel

A controller is the sensible default because the game’s immediate, arcade-oriented handling does not require the same pedal precision as a simulator. A wheel can still be enjoyable if you already own one, but it is an optional immersion upgrade rather than the central reason to choose the game.

Who should choose it

  • Choose The Crew Motorfest for free roaming, Hawaiian scenery and varied events.
  • Choose it over GT7 when exploration and accessibility matter more than detailed simulation.
  • Choose GT7 or Assetto Corsa Competizione when technical circuit behavior is your main priority.

You play mostly with a controller

All four alternatives can be approached with a controller, but they ask for different habits. Motorfest is the least demanding immediately; F1 25 is approachable with assists; WRC rewards learning controlled corrections; and Assetto Corsa Competizione asks for the most patience when you are trying to drive consistently.

You already own a wheel

Start with Assetto Corsa Competizione if you want to exploit the hardware’s force feedback and detailed vehicle behavior. F1 25 and EA Sports WRC also benefit from a wheel-and-pedal setup, while Motorfest is better treated as an optional wheel experience.

PS5 wheel and pedal setup: when it is worth buying

A PS5 racing wheel with pedals is the most natural add-on for simulation-minded players. Current buying coverage commonly targets GT7, F1 25 and EA Sports WRC setups and emphasizes force feedback, which communicates steering load and surface or curb impacts through the wheel.

Do not choose hardware by brand or price alone. Confirm that the product explicitly supports PS5, includes the pedals you need and offers the connection method your room can accommodate. Retail availability, regional bundles and compatibility lists change, so verify those details at the time of purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up in this order

  1. Place the wheel on a rigid surface or stand so it cannot move under braking.
  2. Position the pedals so your heel and foot stay stable during repeated inputs.
  3. Connect the wheel before launching the game and confirm that the console recognizes it.
  4. Begin with moderate force-feedback strength and default steering calibration.
  5. Run a short practice session, then adjust dead zones, steering sensitivity and pedal response one setting at a time.
  6. Keep a controller nearby for menus, troubleshooting and games where a wheel adds little value.

Common mistakes

  • Buying before checking PS5 support: Some wheels are designed for other platforms or require a separate console-compatible version.
  • Overdriving force feedback: Maximum strength can obscure detail and make long sessions tiring. Start lower and increase it gradually.
  • Changing several settings at once: You will not know which adjustment improved or harmed control. Change one variable, test, then keep or revert it.
  • Expecting every game to feel the same: A wheel that feels informative in GT3 racing may feel unnecessary in an arcade open world.

Bottom line

Keep Gran Turismo 7 if you want the widest all-round PS5 racing package. Add Assetto Corsa Competizione when you want a concentrated GT3 simulator, F1 25 for licensed Formula 1 and its My Team and Braking Point modes, EA Sports WRC for official rally stages, or The Crew Motorfest for Hawaiian open-world variety. A wheel with pedals is worthwhile primarily when you choose one of the simulation-focused options and intend to practice seriously.
