The right racing wheel for an open-world driving game is the one that supports your game on your platform—not simply the one with the most features. Start by matching the exact wheel variant to your PC, PlayStation or Xbox, then choose between a conventional wheel-and-pedal set and a direct-drive base. Official compatibility lists make the Logitech G29/G920/G923, Thrustmaster T248/T300 RS and Fanatec CSL DD candidates worth checking; they do not establish a performance ranking.
How to choose a wheel for open-world racing
- Choose your platform first. A wheel family name can cover different console variants. Check the exact model and suffix, then confirm compatibility with your game and platform.
- Decide how simple or expandable a setup you want. A conventional wheel-and-pedal set is the straightforward category to consider. A direct-drive base such as the Fanatec CSL DD brings additional ecosystem and platform conditions to check.
- Verify support for the exact game. Forza Motorsport’s official list cited here is specifically for the PC version of Forza Horizon 5; it is not a universal guarantee for console editions. Ubisoft publishes a separate supported-wheel list for The Crew Motorfest.
- Check support again before buying. Manufacturer and game compatibility can change with updates, firmware and model variants. Confirm the current listing for the precise SKU and game edition you intend to use.
Wheels to consider by platform and setup
These are compatibility-based candidates, not ranked winners. The cited manufacturer and game pages establish supported models and platform distinctions, not comparative comfort, force-feedback quality, reliability or value in controlled tests.

What the game compatibility pages establish
Forza Horizon 5
Forza’s wheel guide lists supported devices for the PC version, including Logitech G29, G920 and G923 models, Thrustmaster T300 RS and Fanatec CSL DD. Treat that list as PC-specific rather than applying it to Xbox editions. Check the guide and the device maker’s current compatibility information for your exact setup: Forza Motorsport wheel user’s guide.
The Crew Motorfest
Ubisoft lists supported wheels for The Crew Motorfest and describes game-specific force-feedback integration. Its list includes platform-specific model details, so match both the model and platform rather than relying on a product-family name. Ubisoft says its team worked on the integration “to make the game not only compatible but also optimized for as many configurations as possible.” That statement describes Ubisoft’s development aim; it is not an independent comparison of wheel performance. Platform variants that are easy to confuse
Logitech G29 and G920
These are not interchangeable console recommendations: Logitech identifies the G29 with PlayStation and the G920 with Xbox. Forza’s cited PC list includes both, but that does not establish that either model works with every console edition of every game. Confirm the platform-specific model and current game support using Logitech’s wheel information and the relevant game compatibility page.
Thrustmaster T248
Thrustmaster sells separate T248 PlayStation/PC and Xbox/PC versions. Its support information also warns that wheels are not compatible with games running in cloud gaming or streaming modes. This matters if you plan to stream the game rather than run it locally. Check the T248 product page and T248 support page for the version and mode you intend to use.

Fanatec CSL DD
The CSL DD is a direct-drive base, not a complete platform-agnostic console solution. Fanatec’s manual states that PC use is supported and makes Xbox compatibility conditional on pairing the base with an officially licensed Xbox Fanatec steering wheel. Check the full CSL DD manual and the wheel’s current platform support before building a setup around it.
Which type makes sense for your setup?
Choose a conventional wheel-and-pedal set for a simpler starting point
If you want a familiar, self-contained style of setup, compare compatible Logitech and Thrustmaster wheel sets for your platform. Compatibility is the strongest evidence available here; the cited sources do not show that one of these models has better feedback, comfort or value than another.

Consider direct drive if you want a base-centered setup
The CSL DD is the direct-drive option among the named candidates. It may suit someone choosing a base and compatible ecosystem rather than a simple wheel-set purchase, but console compatibility has the Fanatec steering-wheel condition described above. The sources do not provide comparable measurements to establish that it is the best choice for open-world games.

- Match the wheel’s exact model variant to the console or PC you use.
- Confirm that the specific game version supports that device; do not carry a PC compatibility listing over to console.
- If you play through cloud gaming or streaming, account for Thrustmaster’s stated incompatibility warning for wheels in those modes.
- For CSL DD on Xbox, verify that the steering wheel paired with the base is officially licensed for Xbox by Fanatec.
- Check what is included with the selected product and whether it suits your intended setup. A stand or cockpit is an optional convenience, not a demonstrated requirement.
Logitech identifies its Driving Force Shifter as an accessory, but it is optional; check fit with the selected wheel before adding it. Logitech wheel and accessory information.
