There is no verified single “best” Ranger build for every activity in Path of Exile 2’s 0.5.5 patch. The available evidence identifies Deadeye and Pathfinder as the Ranger’s ascendancies, but does not establish a current winner or a best-in-slot endgame gear set. For a grounded starting point, Ranger begins with a bow and Lightning Arrow; choose an ascendancy and skill plan around your intended play style, and treat older build guides as version-specific.
What is the best Ranger build in Path of Exile 2?
The evidence available for patch 0.5.5 does not support ranking a Ranger setup as the best for campaign leveling, mapping, and bosses. It also does not provide standardized performance comparisons between Deadeye and Pathfinder. The most useful answer is therefore a version-aware choice: start from the kind of combat you want, then verify that the skill links, passive tree, ascendancy nodes, and items in any guide match the live patch.
ExileDB’s Ranger entry, dated September 27, 2026, says its class data was checked against game files for 0.5.5. The official patch-note index lists 0.5.4 in June 2026 and the 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients update in May 2026. These sources provide context for 0.5.5, but do not establish whether a later update appeared by the research date. Check the official patch-note index before following a build written for a specific patch.
Which Ranger ascendancy should you choose?
Ranger has two ascendancies: Deadeye and Pathfinder. The choice should follow the build’s actual skill and mechanics, not a universal tier-list claim. The sources reviewed do not verify exact live 0.5.5 node details or show which ascendancy performs better across content.

Deadeye: ranged attacks and Mirage
Deadeye is the relevant option to investigate for a ranged-attack plan. In patch 0.4.0, Grinding Gear Games added the Mirage Deadeye Ascendancy Passive Skill, which grants the Mirage Deadeye Meta Skill. The official notes describe it as creating a Mirage when you fire a Ranged Attack Projectile while the skill is active; the Mirage uses socketed Ranged Attacks briefly, then vanishes. This documents the mechanic in 0.4.0, not its full state after later updates. Review the official 0.4.0 notes and subsequent notes for current details.
Pathfinder: a different skill and utility direction
Pathfinder is the other Ranger ascendancy, and a community guide illustrates a build centered on Shattering Concoction rather than a conventional bow-focused plan. That guide is one example, not evidence that Pathfinder is currently stronger or that its advice remains optimal in 0.5.5.

The 0.4.0 notes document several Pathfinder changes: Contagious Contamination and Practical Remedies were removed; Running Assault gained heavy-stun protection while sprinting; and Path Seeker was added, with choices to allocate passives from another class starting point and four passive points. Those are patch-specific changes. Confirm the live ascendancy tree before planning around any of them.
Which skills should a Ranger use while leveling?
ExileDB’s 0.5.5 class reference identifies Ranger as a Dexterity class and lists Lightning Arrow, a Crude Bow, and a Broadhead Quiver as starting skill and equipment. That supports using Lightning Arrow as a natural starting point; it does not prove that Lightning Arrow is the strongest endgame skill.

Bow and projectile route
If you want to stay with a bow, use the starting setup as a practical entry point and evaluate later skills against your current links, passive tree, and content goal. A leveling setup and an endgame setup need not be identical. Do not carry a passive tree or skill-link plan forward without checking its patch version.
Shattering Concoction route
In Afana’s community Pathfinder Shattering Concoction guide, the suggested early approach is to use any bow skill, prioritize projectile damage and movement-speed passives, then choose Pathfinder after defeating Balbala and take the node related to Shattering Concoction. This is advice from that guide, not independently tested performance data or a confirmed 0.5.5 recommendation. See the guide and verify its instructions against your game version before committing to its tree.

What items does a Ranger build need?
The current class reference names the starting Crude Bow and Broadhead Quiver. It does not establish a current endgame equipment set, exact item priorities, or a universal best-in-slot list. Treat any precise endgame gear recommendation as unverified unless it comes from a build guide explicitly updated for the patch and league you are playing.
When comparing guides, check whether they distinguish leveling gear from endgame gear and explain the item names, modifier priorities, and budget for their specific setup. The available sources do not provide enough information to recommend those details for a 0.5.5 Ranger. Here, “items” means in-game equipment; there is no identified physical product required to play the build.

Why older Ranger build advice can be outdated
Official patch 0.4.0 notes record changes to both ascendancies and the Ranger-area passive tree. They describe a new bow cluster and a modified projectile cluster in the Ranger section, including the Surpassing chance to fire an additional Arrow. The notes also warn that passive-tree changes may force refunds for affected existing characters. A tree or skill recommendation from an earlier patch may therefore no longer fit, even if its general play style still appeals to you.
Check guide dates and patch labels before investing in a character. In particular, an older Lightning Arrow Deadeye page for Path of Exile 1, updated for version 3.28, is not evidence for a Path of Exile 2 build. Do not transfer its skill links, passive tree, or item advice to PoE2.
How to choose a build without a verified ranking
- Set your goal: decide whether you are planning for campaign leveling, general mapping, or boss damage. The sources do not establish one setup as best at all three.
- Choose a damage plan: compare a bow-and-projectile approach with a Pathfinder plan built around Shattering Concoction.
- Match the ascendancy to the mechanics: investigate Deadeye’s ranged-attack Mirage option or Pathfinder options only after confirming their current node details.
- Check the version: require a patch and league label for passive trees, skill links, and item plans. Recheck official notes when the game updates.
- Separate leveling from endgame: do not assume the skills and equipment used to progress through the campaign are the final build.
These checks help you assess whether a guide fits your character; they are not a performance ranking. No current cross-build comparison or independently published Ranger DPS, clear-speed, or budget figures are established by the cited sources.
