What counts as a retro or revival game on the ROG Ally?

ASUS’s recommendations are a useful shortlist, but its article is several years old. Check each current store listing for Windows availability, requirements, launcher dependencies, controller support, and compatibility notes before buying. No performance or compatibility testing is established here for a particular Ally configuration.
Classic collections: play the original Mega Man games
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Mega Man Legacy Collection packages six original 8-bit games, according to ASUS’s Ally retro-games guide. It is the straightforward choice if you want the series’ original platform action rather than a remake that reinterprets it. The compact structure of the classic entries also makes it easy to dip into a stage without committing to a long adventure.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2
The second collection covers Mega Man 7 through Mega Man 10, spanning a later stretch of the series. It complements the first collection rather than replacing it: choose based on which entries or era you want to revisit. Modern games with classic platforming DNA
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
Shovel Knight is a modern release designed to evoke classic platform games, not an original-era title. ASUS points to influences associated with Castlevania, Mega Man, Zelda II, and DuckTales, and recommends Treasure Trove for PC or handheld play. It is the clearest pick here if you want deliberately old-school action with a newer game’s presentation and added content. Review the current listing to confirm what the edition includes and how it handles controls.

Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania is a newer game built around the familiar 2D Sonic formula, rather than a compilation of original Genesis releases. ASUS characterizes it as continuing from Sonic 3 in story and gameplay and as a refinement of the Genesis-era approach; that is ASUS’s assessment, not a measured consensus. Pick it for fast side-scrolling play that feels rooted in the classic series while still being a modern release.
Tetris Effect
Tetris Effect applies a contemporary presentation to the established falling-block puzzle formula. It suits players who want familiar rules with a newer audiovisual treatment, rather than a historical version of the game. Check the current listing for Windows availability and input options.

Classic PC adventures: LucasArts and mouse-oriented controls
Classic LucasArts adventures offer a different kind of retro play: exploration, dialogue, and puzzles rather than platform action. Some releases have been remastered with updated art or music and gamepad support; older point-and-click versions may expect mouse input. ASUS notes that the Ally’s sticks can be used to move a pointer like a mouse, which can make some games usable without native gamepad support. That is a control workaround, not the same experience as a game designed for handheld buttons.
Before choosing an adventure, check whether the specific edition is an original point-and-click release or a remaster, and whether its listing specifies controller support. If it relies on mouse input, consider whether pointer movement with a stick feels comfortable for the puzzles and menus you will encounter.

Find more classic PC games through preservation catalogs
For a wider search beyond ASUS’s shortlist, GOG’s Preservation Program catalog is a discovery point for older PC games. Its current listings include examples such as Heroes of Might and Magic III, Diablo, and The Sands of Time; the catalog and availability can change. A preservation-program listing is not a guarantee that a game will work identically on every Ally setup, so use the game’s own store page and compatibility notes as the final check.
