There is no objectively best romance for Baldur’s Gate 3’s Dark Urge. Choose by the story you want: a resisting run lends itself to a relationship built on trust and vulnerability, while an Urge-embracing run can support a darker story about power and complicity. Those are thematic lenses, not exclusive mechanics or rankings: Larian says the Dark Urge can romance like any other Origin character, and each relationship develops differently.
Does playing the Dark Urge change who you can romance?
No. Larian Studios describes the Dark Urge as a customizable Origin who begins without their memories and can choose to resist or indulge their violent impulses. The character can form a romance like any other Origin; the choice of Origin does not by itself lock you out of romance.
There is one multiplayer distinction: a player-controlled Origin can romance an NPC Origin, but player-controlled Origins cannot romance one another. Larian also says players can pursue a relationship, change their minds, or fall in love with someone else. Larian’s Community Update #21 and Community Update #22 explain the broad rules.
Choose a romance by the Dark Urge story you want
The sources do not establish a ranked list of companions or a route-by-route measure of how much Dark Urge content each romance has. Instead, think about what you want the relationship to mean within your character’s arc. These are interpretations of possible story tones, not claims that a particular companion is uniquely intended for the Dark Urge.

For a resisting Dark Urge: trust and vulnerability
If your character is trying to resist their urges, look for the emotional contrast you want: a relationship can make the struggle feel personal, placing trust and vulnerability alongside the fear of losing control. This lens suits a player more interested in the possibility of connection amid danger than in treating violence as a route to power.
For an Urge-embracing Dark Urge: ambition and complicity
If your character chooses to indulge the Urge, consider whether you want the romance to sit in tension with that choice or to be part of a darker story about shared ambition and complicity. The latter is a roleplaying interpretation, not a guarantee of a particular companion’s reaction or ending.

For a mixed or changing path: let the relationship evolve
You do not have to decide at the start that your character will resist forever or embrace the Urge at every turn. Larian says relationships change over the course of the game and that “No two relationships follow the same formula.” It also says “The path to intimacy also varies greatly for each relationship along the course of the game.” In other words, there is no single romance formula that can be applied to every companion.
Act Two spoiler: a choice can put a loved one in danger
Major Act Two spoiler. After the Dark Urge spares Isobel under the relevant conditions, a camp event can present a serious test of resistance. According to the community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s Dark Urge quest entry, Sceleritas Fel directs the Dark Urge toward the person they care about most: the romantic interest, or, if there is no romance, the companion with the highest approval. The event includes an opportunity to resist and wake the companion.

This makes the romance relevant to the scene’s stakes, but it does not make one companion an objectively better choice. If you want a romance to face that peril, keep the partner in mind as you make decisions; if you would rather avoid that particular relationship-specific tension, consider how the event fits your preferred story. The exact circumstances and consequences can depend on gameplay conditions, so this is not a complete step-by-step route guide. GameSpot’s Dark Urge guide also discusses the Isobel decision and its consequences, but its details should not be treated as a guarantee for every patch or edge case.

Ending spoiler. Larian’s Patch 7 announcement lists new evil endings, which makes the ending’s tone worth considering if your Dark Urge intends to embrace their nature. The announcement also mentions romance-related fixes, but it does not provide a complete account of how each romance concludes. Do not assume a particular partner guarantees a specific final scene or outcome; the available official information does not establish a romance-by-romance ending matrix. See Larian’s Patch 7 announcement for what that update confirms.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- Choose by character arc: decide whether you want the romance to support resistance, complicate it, or accompany an embrace of the Urge.
- Think about the Act Two peril: if you want the threatened-lover scene to matter to your run, choose a romance you are willing to put in that dramatic position.
- Leave room for change: your character can reconsider a relationship or their own direction as the game progresses.
- Do not pick based on a supposed ranking: the cited sources confirm that relationship paths differ, but do not identify a universally best companion or quantify which route has the most Dark Urge-specific material.
