Best Rhythm Games With Built-In Music or Beatmap Editors

Choose Beat Saber if you want a VR rhythm game with a documented song editor. Choose osu! if you want a free, community-driven ecosystem built around creating and sharing beatmaps. Choose Crypt of the NecroDancer if your priority is playing rhythmically through your own MP3 collection and using mods; it is a custom-music roguelike, not a conventional chart-authoring tool.

Those are different kinds of creation. Beat Saber gives you direct control over chart parameters and note placement, osu! makes user-created beatmaps the center of its online community, and Crypt lets your music library drive play while mods supply additional content. The right choice depends on whether you want to author charts, share them, or simply play to music you already own.

What counts as a music or beatmap editor?

Rhythm games use the word “custom” for several different features. A chart editor lets you place or adjust gameplay events so notes line up with a song. A custom-audio feature lets you select music that the developer did not package as a fixed soundtrack. Mod support can add songs, rules or other content, but it is not automatically the same thing as an editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters in this comparison:

  • Beat Saber: an official song-map editor with documented timing, difficulty and movement settings.
  • osu!: a free online ecosystem centered on user-created and shared beatmaps, with the ability to use your own music.
  • Crypt of the NecroDancer: personal MP3 playback and full mod support, while its core game remains a rhythm roguelike rather than a general-purpose beatmap editor.
  • Muse Dash: present in Nintendo’s Switch rhythm-game catalog, but the consulted publisher material does not establish a built-in editor.

So “best” is not a single ranking. It is a match between the kind of creation you want and the way each game handles audio, charts, hardware and sharing.

Game Creation or custom-audio method Input and platform context Best fit Important boundary
Beat Saber Official song-map editor; set song time offset, difficulty, jump speed, spawn offset and standard environment before building a map. Virtual reality; a compatible VR headset is required. Players who want hands-on VR chart editing. Its documented workflow uses authored song maps rather than a personal MP3 selector.
osu! User-created beatmaps, personal music use, sharing, storyboarding and multiplayer. Free-to-win, online, PC-centered ecosystem. Creators who want to make and distribute charts in a large community. Its strength is the community beatmap ecosystem, not a VR motion-editor experience.
Crypt of the NecroDancer Select songs from your own MP3 collection; full mod support and a built-in mod portal. Rhythm roguelike; Nintendo lists a Nintendo Switch Edition. Players who want their own soundtrack inside an exploration game and access to mods. Personal-music playback is not the same as authoring traditional beatmaps.
Muse Dash Not established in the consulted publisher material. Nintendo lists it among Switch rhythm titles. Switch players seeking another rhythm-game option. No editor-first recommendation is made because built-in chart-authoring evidence was not established.

1. Beat Saber: the clearest VR choice for making maps

Beat Games identifies Beat Saber as a virtual-reality rhythm game and lists official music packs and original soundtracks. Its official editor documentation describes a creation workflow in which you configure a song and then open the editor to build its map.

What the editor lets you control

The documented settings cover the parts of a rhythm chart that most directly affect timing and play feel:

  • Song time offset: align the chart with the audio when the beat does not begin at the expected point.
  • Difficulty: define the intended challenge level for the map.
  • Jump speed: control how quickly notes travel toward the player.
  • Spawn offset: adjust where notes begin appearing relative to the player.
  • Standard environment: select the standard stage environment for the song.

After those values are set, the documentation directs creators to open the editor and build the song map. This makes Beat Saber the strongest fit when “editor” means placing and tuning VR notes rather than merely selecting different music.

A practical Beat Saber creation sequence

  1. Confirm the hardware: you need a compatible VR headset before the game’s motion-based play and editing workflow are relevant.
  2. Prepare the song-map setup: choose the song and establish the song time offset so the chart’s first events line up with the audio.
  3. Choose the target difficulty: decide which difficulty the map is intended to serve before placing patterns.
  4. Set movement parameters: tune jump speed and spawn offset. These settings change how early notes appear and how much reaction time the player experiences.
  5. Select the environment: use the documented standard-environment setting for the stage presentation.
  6. Open the editor and build: place the song’s map events against the audio, then play the result in VR to check whether the timing and physical movement feel coherent.

The last step is important even when the chart is technically synchronized. A map can be on-beat but still feel uncomfortable if its jump speed, spawn offset and movement demands do not suit the selected difficulty.

Who should choose Beat Saber?

Beat Saber is the natural choice for a VR owner who wants creation to feel physical. You are not simply arranging symbols on a desktop timeline; the finished chart is intended to be played with VR motion and spatial awareness. The editor settings explicitly expose timing and movement variables, so creators who enjoy tuning how a chart approaches the player have more documented control than they would get from a game that only accepts custom songs.

Anker USB-C Hub, 5-in-1 USB Hub for Laptops, 4K HDMI Multiport Adapter | USB C Dongle with 90W Max Power Delivery, 3×5Gbps USB A Data Ports, for MacBook, Dell, and More (Charger Not Included)
  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The trade-off is hardware and format. A compatible headset is mandatory, and the documented workflow is based on authored song maps. If your first requirement is loading any MP3 from your computer and automatically playing it, Beat Saber is not the recommendation supported by this evidence.

2. osu!: the best fit for community-made and shared beatmaps

The official osu! about page describes it as a free-to-win online rhythm game with user-created beatmaps, storyboarding, multiplayer and the ability to use your own music and share creations. That combination makes osu! the clearest choice for players who view an editor as part of a publishing community rather than a private tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why osu! stands out for creators

  • User creation is central: beatmaps are made by players, not limited to a fixed developer soundtrack.
  • Your own music is supported: the official description explicitly includes using personal music.
  • Sharing is built into the concept: creators can distribute their work to other players.
  • Storyboarding expands the canvas: creations can include presentation and visual sequencing in addition to playable notes.
  • Online and multiplayer context: maps are made for an active online ecosystem rather than an isolated local editor.

For someone asking, “Where can I make and share my own rhythm charts?” osu! is the most direct answer in this group. Its identity is tied to the cycle of creating, playing and sharing community beatmaps.

A practical osu! workflow

  1. Choose the music: use a track from your own collection, consistent with osu!’s official description of personal-music support.
  2. Create the beatmap: arrange the playable chart around that audio rather than treating the song as a passive soundtrack.
  3. Shape the presentation: use storyboarding when the creation calls for visual events beyond the note pattern.
  4. Play-test the result: check that the chart’s rhythm communicates the music and remains playable at its intended challenge.
  5. Share the creation: publish or distribute the beatmap within the game’s online community so other players can experience it.

The official description establishes the creation-and-sharing model, but it does not provide a single numeric limit for chart length, a universal approval time or a guaranteed audience size. Those details should not be assumed from the game’s community focus.

Who should choose osu!?

Pick osu! when the social life of a chart matters as much as the act of making it. It suits creators who want their work discovered, played and discussed by other rhythm-game users, and players who want a broad stream of community-made content. It is also the least hardware-specific option here: the evidence describes a free, online, PC-centered ecosystem rather than a VR requirement.

osu! is less suitable if your goal is specifically to design a room-scale motion chart. Its documented strengths are beatmap creation, personal music, storyboarding, multiplayer and sharing, not headset-based spatial editing.

3. Crypt of the NecroDancer: custom MP3s and mods, not a conventional chart editor

Klei’s official page says Crypt of the NecroDancer lets players select songs from their own MP3 collection. It also describes full mod support and a built-in mod portal. That makes it the strongest recommendation for a different question: “Which rhythm game lets me play through music I already own?”

How its custom-music model differs

Crypt’s defining structure is a rhythm roguelike. Movement and exploration are integrated with the beat, so choosing a personal MP3 changes the soundtrack for that style of play. It does not, on the evidence available here, present itself as a general-purpose editor in which you author and share traditional note charts for every song.

Mods broaden the content possibilities. The built-in mod portal gives players an in-game route to supported modded material, while the official page’s “full mod support” description signals that the game is designed to accommodate more than its base content. Neither point should be converted into a claim that every mod includes an editable beatmap or that any MP3 automatically becomes a hand-authored chart.

A practical Crypt workflow

  1. Prepare compatible music: keep the MP3 collection you intend to use available to the game.
  2. Select a song: choose from your own MP3 collection when setting up a run.
  3. Play the rhythm roguelike: follow the game’s beat-driven exploration and combat structure with that soundtrack.
  4. Explore mods separately: use the built-in mod portal when you want additional supported content.

This workflow is intentionally different from Beat Saber’s or osu!’s. You are customizing the music that accompanies the game, not necessarily authoring a chart for publication.

Who should choose Crypt of the NecroDancer?

Choose Crypt when the game around the rhythm is the attraction. It is a good fit for players who want personal MP3 playback, mod support and roguelike exploration in one package. It is not the first recommendation for a creator whose main goal is to place, tune and share conventional beatmaps.

Switch players: where Muse Dash and Crypt fit

Nintendo’s official rhythm-game catalog lists Muse Dash and Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition among Switch rhythm titles. That establishes their presence in Nintendo’s rhythm-game category, but platform availability alone does not establish editor functionality.

Muse Dash

Muse Dash is a useful Switch alternative if you want another rhythm title, but the consulted primary material does not document a built-in music or beatmap editor. It therefore should not be ranked above Beat Saber or osu! for an editor-first purchase decision.

Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition

The Switch listing provides the platform context, while Klei’s page provides the custom-MP3 and mod-support evidence. If you want that personal-music model on a Nintendo system, Crypt is the documented fit among the titles discussed here.

Choose by the creation experience you want

Your priority Best match Reason
Build and tune a chart in VR Beat Saber The official editor exposes timing, difficulty, jump-speed, spawn-offset and environment controls, and the game requires a compatible VR headset.
Create and share community beatmaps osu! User-created maps, personal music, storyboarding and sharing are core parts of its official description.
Play your own MP3s in a rhythm game Crypt of the NecroDancer You can select songs from your MP3 collection, with full mod support and a built-in mod portal.
Play a Switch rhythm title without established editor evidence Muse Dash Nintendo lists it in its Switch rhythm catalog, but a built-in editor was not documented in the consulted source.

Common mistakes when comparing these games

Confusing custom music with custom charts

Loading an MP3 does not necessarily create notes that match every beat. Crypt’s documented feature is song selection from a personal collection; osu! combines personal music with user-created beatmaps; Beat Saber’s documented workflow is authored song mapping. Treat those as three separate capabilities.

Assuming mod support means an editor

Crypt’s full mod support and built-in mod portal are valuable, but a mod distribution system is not automatically a traditional chart editor. If you specifically want to author note patterns, use the evidence for Beat Saber or osu! instead.

Ignoring the input method

Beat Saber requires compatible VR hardware, which affects both playing and editing. osu! is described as PC-centered and online. Nintendo’s catalog provides Switch context for Muse Dash and Crypt. Choose the input and platform first if your hardware options are limited.

Ranking an unverified editor

Muse Dash appears in Nintendo’s rhythm catalog, but the available publisher material does not establish a built-in editor. Absence of documentation is not proof that no creation feature exists in every edition; it is simply not enough evidence to make an editor-focused recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

For hands-on chart authoring in virtual reality, start with Beat Saber. For the broadest documented creation-and-sharing model, start with osu!. For personal MP3 playback inside a rhythm roguelike with mods, choose Crypt of the NecroDancer. Consider Muse Dash as a Switch rhythm option, not as an editor-first pick, unless the specific edition’s current documentation confirms the creation tools you need.
