Choose X-Ray when scouting and hazard awareness matter most; choose Barricade when you need to delay pursuers and control space. Those are practical recommendations inferred from Red Barrels’ published rig mechanics, not trial-specific test results.
What Silence the Idol asks of your loadout
Introduced with Season 6: Project Judas, Silence the Idol takes place in the Television Studio. Its premise is to stop celebrity talking head Bob Vanier from making his political run announcement while carrying out Murkoff’s competing plan. The official trial description reads: “You are the electric eye, the ravenous panopticon that births and consumes with the same razor-toothed orifice. Tear, burn, and crush the face of false charisma, and we will let you out.” Red Barrels’ Season 6 notes establish the setting and trial premise.

Rig choice should follow the problem you want to solve—finding information and anticipating hazards, or buying time and creating separation. Published official notes do not establish a winning rig for this trial, solo or co-op, or at any particular difficulty.
Choose X-Ray for scouting and hazard awareness
The March 2026 rework changed X-Ray into a toggle: its charge drains while active and replenishes while inactive. Use it deliberately rather than leaving it on continuously. Red Barrels lists these relevant upgrades in its Season 6 notes:

- Ping Through: pings enemies and objects through walls and can leave multiple pings active.
- Electromagnetic Field: prevents traps from activating while X-Ray is active.
- Recon: highlights nearby objectives, consumables, and high-priority items.
For a coordinated team, Ping Through is a reasonable choice when sharing enemy or object locations will help. Electromagnetic Field suits a player who values trap awareness, while Recon emphasizes nearby useful items. These are applications of the documented abilities, not an officially recommended Silence the Idol build. The notes also list upgrades for increased capacity and faster recharge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose Barricade for time and control
Barricade is the more direct option when you want to slow pursuers or make room during an interaction. The reworked rig carries two barricades by default, or three with the Extra Barricade upgrade. You can place multiple barricades; placing another beyond your carry limit breaks the oldest. Removing a barricade refunds it immediately, and cooldown starts after all barricades have been placed. Red Barrels also says enemies and invaders take more hits to break barricades than before. These mechanics are described in the Season 6 notes.
Its usefulness depends on having a suitable place to deploy one and a situation where a delay helps. The published notes do not identify a particular trial interaction where Barricade is optimal.
Other rigs and saved loadouts
The official notes covered here explain the X-Ray and Barricade reworks, but do not rank them against Stun, Heal, Blind, or other rigs for this trial. An S-tier list or a claim that one rig is best for a specific party size would go beyond the evidence.
Season 7 patch notes dated July 14, 2026, mirrored by SteamDB, describe loadout presets that save up to three loadouts for switching before a trial: SteamDB’s Season 7 patch-note mirror. Check the current client to confirm the feature is available in your version. If it is, saving a scouting setup and a control or survival setup can make it easier to adapt to difficulty, team composition, or personal preference; that is a preparation tip, not a proven optimal strategy.
What the April 2026 hotfix does—and does not—tell you
Red Barrels’ April 1, 2026 hotfix record lists fixes involving clues obstructed by pushable objects, cassettes lost during fast inventory scrolling, incorrect dropped-cassette icons, and several Barricade issues. These are historical fixes, not evidence that the problems still occur in the current client.
