For an RLCraft 2.9 server, start with enable-command-block=true, allow-flight=true, max-tick-time=-1, difficulty=3, and view-distance=6. Allocate about 4 GB of RAM, keep simulation distance conservative when it is available, and raise distances only while watching tick time, CPU load, and memory. These settings preserve RLCraft’s structure generation, flying-mount mechanics, Hard-mode balance, and long chunk-generation tasks without treating one performance profile as universal.

| Property | Value | Why it belongs in the baseline |
|---|---|---|
enable-command-block |
true |
RLCraft’s documentation says structures may fail to generate correctly and villager spawns may be missing when command blocks are disabled. |
allow-flight |
true |
Flying mounts and fairy-ring mechanics need it; leaving it false can cause legitimate flying players to be kicked. |
max-tick-time |
-1 |
Disables the watchdog timeout that can terminate long structure-generation tasks. It is also recommended during world pregeneration. |
difficulty |
3 |
Sets Hard difficulty, the level around which RLCraft is balanced. |
view-distance |
6 |
A conservative starting distance for a modded server; increase it only after performance testing. |
These values are a compatibility starting point, not a guarantee that every host can run any player count. CPU speed, active players, loaded chunks, exploration, and pregeneration all change the workload.
How to apply the settings safely
- Shut down cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop command and wait until the process exits. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when it saves.
- Back up the configuration and world. Copy
server.propertiesand the complete world directory to a separate location. A backup is especially important before changing distance settings or pregenerating terrain. - Open the correct file. Edit the
server.propertiesin the server’s main directory, not a similarly named client or backup file. - Change one value per line. Use the exact property names and lowercase Boolean values shown above. Do not add quotation marks or spaces around the equals sign.
- Save and restart. Start the Forge server again and check the console for startup errors. If a setting is rejected, stop the server, restore the backup, and correct the spelling or value.
- Test in the game. Confirm that newly explored areas generate structures, villagers can appear, and flying mounts do not trigger the flight kick. Test with the same number of players and exploration activity you expect during normal use.
Properties affect the server only after a restart. A client-side options file cannot substitute for the server’s configuration.

Why the four compatibility settings matter
Command blocks and world generation
RLCraft uses command-block-dependent behavior in its world and structure systems. With enable-command-block=false, the documented symptoms are incorrectly generated structures and missing villager spawns. Turn it on even if your players never type commands; the setting is about the modpack’s mechanics, not merely player permissions.
Flight checks and flying mounts
allow-flight=true prevents the vanilla server flight check from treating RLCraft movement as cheating. Flying mounts and fairy-ring mechanics can look like unauthorized flight to that check. A player who is repeatedly kicked while mounted should have this property verified before investigating network or client problems.

Watchdog behavior during heavy ticks
The watchdog normally terminates a server that spends too long in one tick. RLCraft’s structure generation can legitimately take longer, especially while unexplored terrain is being created. Setting max-tick-time=-1 prevents that watchdog termination. It does not make generation faster and it does not remove the need to monitor the machine: a genuinely stalled process will remain stalled until you intervene.
Hard difficulty
difficulty=3 selects Hard. RLCraft’s progression, combat danger, and survival assumptions are built around that level. Changing it is a gameplay decision rather than a performance optimization.

RAM and Java startup settings
The RLCraft installation guidance uses 4 GB of allocated RAM as a starting point and warns that allocating more can create Java memory-leak problems. Begin near 4 GB rather than assigning every gigabyte on the machine. The operating system, file cache, remote administration tools, and any other services need memory outside the server heap.
Set the heap in the launcher or wrapper
A Forge server wrapper exposes Java heap settings through -Xms and -Xmx. A representative startup line is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
The Forge jar filename varies by installation, so use the filename actually supplied with your server. Keeping -Xms and -Xmx at the same starting value gives the process a predictable heap, but the important limit is that the maximum must fit comfortably alongside the host’s other memory demands.
When more RAM is not the answer
Increasing -Xmx cannot repair a weak single-thread CPU, excessive view distance, or a world that is generating many new chunks at once. It can also worsen memory-management behavior when pushed well beyond the installation guidance. Change allocation only when monitoring shows a repeatable memory shortage, and make one change at a time.

Changing server.properties alone cannot compensate for an undersized or oversubscribed Java process. If the heap is full, adjust the wrapper or startup command; if ticks are slow while heap use is moderate, investigate CPU and distance settings instead.
View distance and simulation distance
Distance settings control different work. view-distance determines how much world data the server sends to each client. A larger value can increase network traffic, chunk loading, and memory pressure for every connected player. simulation-distance, when that property exists in the server version, controls how far active ticking occurs: mobs, block entities, and other game logic continue updating within that radius.
| Setting | Primary effect | What lowering it can change |
|---|---|---|
view-distance |
World data sent and kept available around each player | Less visible terrain and shorter client-side horizon, with lower server and network work |
simulation-distance |
Radius in which entities and block logic actively tick | Mobs and machines farther away may stop updating until a player returns, reducing CPU work |
Why start at six chunks
view-distance=6 is a conservative starting point used in RLCraft server examples. It is a practical first value for a small private server or a host whose CPU capacity is unknown. It is not a universal optimum: some community configurations use 8–10 for visibility or compatibility, but those values assume a workload that may not match yours.
A controlled tuning procedure
- Start with
view-distance=6. If available, setsimulation-distanceto a similarly conservative value rather than leaving active ticking unnecessarily wide. - Test with the expected number of players. Have them travel through unexplored terrain, because live chunk generation is more demanding than standing in an already loaded base.
- Watch server tick time, CPU utilization, heap usage, and the console for watchdog or “can’t keep up” messages.
- Raise only one distance by a small amount, restart, and repeat the same test. Stop increasing when tick stability or memory headroom deteriorates.
- If exploration causes lag, lower the distance again before adding RAM. Distance reductions often remove more work than a larger heap can absorb.
For a powerful machine with few players, test 8 and then 10 only if ticks remain stable. For a busy or modest host, keeping six—or lowering simulation distance while preserving view distance—usually protects responsiveness better than chasing a larger horizon.

Pregeneration creates chunks before players discover them, moving some of the cost away from live exploration. It can make normal travel smoother, but the process itself is CPU- and memory-intensive. Keep max-tick-time=-1 during the operation, run it in a maintenance window, and watch resource usage throughout.
Practical maintenance sequence
- Back up the world and verify that you have enough free disk space for the additional chunks.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop or restrict normal player activity.
- Run your chosen pregeneration process in manageable regions rather than attempting an unlimited area at once.
- Monitor CPU, heap, disk activity, and tick behavior. Pause or reduce the area if the machine becomes unresponsive.
- Stop the server cleanly after completion, confirm the world saves, and restart it before reopening access.
Pregeneration is not a substitute for sensible distance values. Players can still generate terrain outside the prepared area, and a large simulation radius continues to tick active entities around them.

Configuration profiles by workload
| Workload | Starting profile | What to verify before raising settings |
|---|---|---|
| Small private group on an unknown or modest host | 4 GB heap, view-distance=6, conservative simulation distance, baseline compatibility values |
Stable ticks during simultaneous exploration and no memory pressure from other services |
| Small group on a powerful dedicated machine | 4 GB starting heap, then test view-distance=8 and possibly 10 |
Single-thread CPU headroom, consistent tick times, and adequate memory after the operating system is accounted for |
| Larger or public server | Keep the compatibility baseline, set max-players to a tested capacity, and favor conservative distances |
Peak concurrent players, live chunk generation, network load, and restart procedures |
| World undergoing pregeneration | max-tick-time=-1, maintenance window, monitored CPU and memory |
Completion without exhausting disk space or leaving the process unresponsive |
Compare configurations using player count, available RAM, single-thread CPU performance, both distance settings, pregeneration status, uptime expectations, and whether the machine is local or managed. Raw RAM alone is a poor predictor of smooth play.
Diagnosing common RLCraft server problems
Structures or villagers are missing
- Confirm
enable-command-block=true. - Confirm
generate-structures=trueandspawn-npcs=truefor a normal survival configuration. - Test in newly generated terrain; already generated chunks will not retroactively rebuild every missing feature simply because a property changed.
- Restart after editing and check the console to ensure the server loaded the intended file.
Players are kicked when flying
- Set
allow-flight=trueand restart. - Test a legitimate flying mount and a fairy-ring interaction again.
- If kicks continue, compare the server and client modpack versions and inspect the console for a different kick reason; do not solve a mod mismatch by disabling authentication or other protections.
The server stops during world generation
- Use
max-tick-time=-1so long generation ticks do not trigger the watchdog. - Reduce concurrent exploration or run pregeneration during maintenance.
- Watch CPU, memory, and disk activity. Disabling the watchdog keeps a slow process alive but cannot fix a crashed JVM or exhausted host.
Exploration causes lag while the base is smooth
- Lower
view-distanceorsimulation-distancebefore increasing RAM. - Test with fewer players entering new chunks simultaneously.
- Use pregeneration for a defined play area, then retest the same travel route.
The server becomes unstable after assigning more memory
- Return toward the installation guidance’s 4 GB starting point.
- Leave headroom for the operating system and other services.
- Check whether the real bottleneck is CPU, distance, or chunk generation rather than heap capacity.
Restart and monitoring practice
RLCraft documentation recommends periodic restarts and reports substantial performance fixes in version 2.9, but it does not publish a universal restart interval. Choose a schedule based on observed uptime, memory behavior, backups, and player habits rather than copying an arbitrary number of hours.
- Record peak and idle memory use.
- Check tick time during combat, base activity, and exploration.
- Review console warnings after each configuration change.
- Schedule backups before pregeneration and other high-write operations.
- Keep a known-good copy of
server.propertiesso a failed experiment can be reversed quickly.
A managed host can simplify backups and monitoring, while a local machine gives you direct control over Java and operating-system resources. In either case, verify that the service supports the RLCraft 2.9 Forge build and allows the required properties before migrating a world.
