For the Hero, Soul Eater is the clearest named recommendation: a Game8 guide summary identifies it as the best character-specific rune and says the Hero equips it. For everyone else, there is no verified universal ranking here. Choose runes around the character’s battle role, position, and needs rather than treating a character’s associated rune as automatically optimal.
What “best” means in Suikoden I
Suikoden I uses turn-based battles with front and back rows. Konami’s official system overview explains that character attack range affects which positions they can attack from and which enemies they can reach: S-range characters cannot attack from the back row; M-range characters can attack from the back but cannot hit backline enemies; L-range characters can attack any enemy. A rune choice should therefore support what a character actually does in the formation, not just a broad damage ranking.

Use these questions when deciding what to equip:
- What is the character’s job? Consider whether the character needs a rune for offense or utility, and how that fits their role in your party.
- Where do they fight? Front- and back-row placement, along with attack range, shapes what they can contribute during a battle.
- Are you keeping a character-associated rune? Some characters have official story or character associations with named runes, but that alone does not show that the rune is the strongest build choice.
Named recommendations and character associations
Hero: Soul Eater
The Game8 guide’s available search-result summary calls Soul Eater the best character-specific rune and says the Hero equips it. That makes Soul Eater the strongest direct recommendation in the available guidance, but it should be read as a focused pick, not as proof of a complete ranking across every rune or character. The guide page itself could not be verified beyond that summary.
Other officially associated runes
Konami’s character information names the following associations. They are useful identifiers, not evidence that each is an optimal combat build.

What the HD Remaster changes—and what it does not establish
Konami describes quality-of-life updates for the remaster, including faster movement, battle speed-up, auto-battle, autosaving at Journey Sealing Orbs, an updated UI, and enhanced backgrounds and sound. Konami’s description of speed-up and automation concerns convenience in battle; it does not document a change to rune balance. There is no basis here for assuming that a rune ranking differs from the original game.
The collection, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster, was announced for release on March 6, 2025, across PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Konami’s 2024 announcement also described physical and digital editions. Check current platform listings for availability rather than relying on the earlier preorder announcement.
Rank #2
- American football simulation game brings all the intensity and realism of NFL players, drafts, and strategies to your console - Game modes include Superstar: The League, Superstar: Showdown, Franchise, Madden Ultimate Team, and Cross-play for endless variation.

- AI enhanced movement makes it easier for your team to execute your gameplan with ball carrier pathfinding and QB and DB awareness.

- Hit Everything 2.0 gives your teammates greater situational awareness, allowing them to push the pile and gain ground to attack the football more effectively.
How to make a party-specific choice
- Start with the Hero’s Soul Eater. It is the clearest named recommendation in the available guide summary.
- Set the formation and role. Decide whether each character belongs in the front or back row, taking their S, M, or L attack range into account.
- Choose a purpose for each remaining rune. Decide whether that character needs more offense or utility for your party and encounter.
- Treat character associations as context, not rankings. Alen/Rage, Kasumi/Shrike, Glenshiel/Thunder, and Luc/True Wind are documented associations; compare alternatives based on actual in-game effects before changing a build.
- Check the rune’s mechanics in an accessible game-specific reference. The available sources do not establish every rune’s effects, spell access, or relative performance, so a fully optimized character-by-character loadout cannot be verified from them.
Limits of a universal rune tier list
No published rune-effectiveness statistics, damage comparisons, or comprehensive balance analysis are established in the available sources. A complete spell-by-spell or character-by-character ranking would therefore overstate what is known. The defensible takeaway is narrower: Soul Eater is the standout named pick for the Hero; for the rest of the party, make the choice around battle role, formation, and verified rune mechanics.
