The best all-around Rust 2x setup is a clearly defined, consistently applied preset: set every gather category your plugin exposes to 2.0, decide separately whether loot and scrap are also doubled, and list the server as Modded when gameplay-changing plugins are active. Keep core server variables in server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg, use a maintained gather plugin for category-level controls, and publish the exact scope in the server description and wipe announcement.
There is no official universal “best” number beyond the meaning of the multiplier itself. The right values depend on whether you want faster building, faster weapons, faster loot progression, or simply less resource farming. This guide gives you a defensible full-2x preset, explains the alternatives, and shows how to verify that the settings players see are the settings the server is actually using.

In Rust server terminology, a 2x setting means a multiplier of 2.0: the relevant action yields twice the normal amount. UGather’s documentation defines the scale as follows:
| Multiplier | Meaning | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
0.5 |
50% of normal | Half-rate gathering |
1.0 |
Normal rate | Vanilla gathering |
1.5 |
150% of normal | Moderately accelerated progression |
2.0 |
Double normal | Full 2x gathering |
The important qualification is scope. “2x gather” may refer only to ore nodes, or it may include barrels, loose pickups, quarries, survey charges, the Giant Excavator, and other sources. “2x loot” is a separate promise: a gather multiplier does not automatically change the contents of containers. Write down what your server means before changing values.

The recommended full-2x preset
For a general-purpose server, use the following policy:
- Set every supported UGather category to
2.0. - Set Better Loot’s global Loot Multiplier to
2.0only if the server is advertised as having 2x loot. - Set the separate Scrap Multiplier to
2.0only if scrap is included in that promise. - Review each Better Loot table rather than assuming a global multiplier produces the exact container progression you want.
- State whether crops, furnace output, NPC drops, and event rewards are included or remain vanilla; do not call the server “full 2x” if those systems are intentionally unchanged.
This is an editorial preset, not an official Facepunch standard. Official documentation describes the available controls and listing rules, but it does not declare one universally best combination of numbers.
Choose the scope before choosing the numbers
Gather-only 2x
A gather-only server doubles resource collection while leaving container loot and scrap at their normal values. This is the simplest interpretation and usually produces faster base construction without dramatically accelerating weapon progression. It is suitable when you want less time spent hitting nodes but still want monuments and barrels to retain vanilla importance.
Full gathering 2x
Full gathering applies 2.0 to every gathering source exposed by the chosen plugin: resource dispensers, barrels, bonus resources, natural pickups, quarries, survey charges, the Giant Excavator, and any other supported category. This produces a more consistent experience because players are not punished for switching from nodes to another resource source that was accidentally left at 1.0.
Gather plus loot 2x
This approach doubles gathering and container progression. It is the fastest of the common presets because players gain more resources from the environment and more items from loot tables. Use it only when the server description says “2x gather and 2x loot” (or equivalent); otherwise players will reasonably interpret the server as misleading.
Selective 2x
You can keep some categories at 1.0 and double others. Examples include 2x ore nodes with normal quarries, or 2x gathering with normal scrap. Selective settings can support a specific progression target, but they require an explicit list in the description and a written record for future wipes. A player cannot infer selective rules from the words “2x” alone.

Keep core settings in server.cfg
Facepunch’s server guide recommends using a server configuration file to keep multiple variable changes together. The identity-specific path is:
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg
Replace the identity portion with the server identity you launch. Keeping the file under that identity makes the configuration easier to back up, move, and audit than relying on a long launch command with undocumented overrides.
What belongs in the core file
- Server identity and the values that define how the instance is presented.
- Network ports and query settings required by your deployment.
- RCON settings, including the port and authentication details required by your management workflow.
- Core variables that should survive a restart or a hosting-panel change.
Use the current Facepunch server guide for the exact variable names and startup requirements for your Rust build. Do not paste plugin-specific settings into the core file unless that plugin’s documentation explicitly says to do so; plugin configuration normally belongs in the plugin’s own configuration or data files.
Back up before changing values
- Stop the server cleanly so configuration and data files are not being written.
- Copy the complete identity directory, including
cfg, plugin configuration, and plugin data folders. - Edit
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfgwith one setting per line and retain a dated copy of the previous version. - Start the server and check the console for parse errors before inviting players back.
- Record the final values in the wipe notes so another administrator can reproduce them.
Set category-level gathering with UGather
UGather is useful when “2x” must cover more than ore nodes. Its documented categories include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Gather source | Recommended full-2x value | Verification focus |
|---|---|---|
| Resource dispensers | 2.0 |

| Barrels | 2.0 |
Check both common and military-style barrel types used on your map. |
| Bonus resources | 2.0 |
Confirm bonus rolls are not still at 1.0. |
| Natural pickups | 2.0 |
Test loose stones, wood, and other map pickups your server exposes. |
| Quarries | 2.0 |
Allow enough production time to verify the output rate rather than checking one tick. |
| Survey charges | 2.0 |
Compare the resulting resource deposits, not only the charge item. |
| Giant Excavator | 2.0 |
Check the production output during an active cycle. |
Set only the categories your server actually promises. If you advertise “2x nodes” but leave barrels and pickups at normal rates, that is a valid narrow preset; it is not full 2x gathering. If you advertise “full 2x,” apply the same policy across every supported category and document any system your plugin cannot modify.
Avoid plugin conflicts
Two gather plugins can both modify the same event. One may set a category to 2.0 while another multiplies the result again or replaces the value during loading. Install only the gather control you need, then inspect the server console after reloads for warnings or duplicate hooks. During testing, temporarily disable competing gather plugins and verify the yield again. The final configuration should have one authoritative owner for each category.

Handle loot and scrap separately with Better Loot
Better Loot documents a configurable global Loot Multiplier and Scrap Multiplier, along with per-table loot configuration and separate gather-rate data files. Treat these as independent controls:
- Loot Multiplier: affects the quantity or weighting defined by the plugin’s loot system.
- Scrap Multiplier: controls scrap separately and should be set only when your advertised progression includes 2x scrap.
- Per-table settings: let you tune individual container tables when a global multiplier creates unwanted spikes or removes meaningful differences between monuments.
Before enabling 2x loot, decide whether the goal is twice as many items, more frequent high-quality items, or simply less empty-container frustration. A global multiplier does not guarantee that every table will produce exactly twice every item. Inspect the plugin’s table files and test representative containers in safe conditions.

When to leave loot at normal rates
Normal loot can be the better choice when you want gathering to feel relaxed but still want monument routes, locked crates, and barrel runs to matter. In that case, say “2x gather, vanilla loot” in the description. This wording prevents players from expecting doubled scrap or container rewards.
Community or Modded? Use Modded for gameplay-changing plugins
A Rust server that changes gameplay through plugins should be listed as Modded. Facepunch’s community-server guidance says, “Any plugin that affects a player’s gameplay in any way,” and gives changes to gather rate, item spawns, player spawns, and smelting mechanics as examples. uMod’s server-section guidance likewise places gameplay-changing modifications such as gather-rate changes and Gather Manager in Modded.
Changing the listing to Community does not make a modified server compliant. If UGather, Better Loot, or another plugin changes gathering or loot, select Modded and keep the description accurate. A genuinely vanilla server with only administrative or informational tooling may have a different classification, but a 2x gameplay preset is not vanilla.
What to show players
- Listing category: Modded.
- Gather scope: for example, “2x resource dispensers, barrels, pickups, quarries, survey charges, and Giant Excavator.”
- Loot scope: “vanilla loot,” “2x loot,” or a precise exception list.
- Scrap scope: state whether it is doubled.
- Wipe timing and any map or blueprint reset information.
Use the same wording in the server description, Discord or website announcement, and wipe message. Consistent wording is more useful than a short but ambiguous “2x” label.

Solo and small-team pacing
Doubling every gather source reduces the time needed to build a starter base and replace basic tools. Doubling loot as well can move players into higher-tier weapons and armor quickly, especially when scrap is also doubled. If your target is a relaxed building server, full 2x gather with normal loot may preserve more of the monument and research loop than 2x across every system.
Large-team acceleration
Teams pool resources, so the practical effect of 2x is larger for groups than for solo players. A full 2x preset can let an organized group stockpile materials and progress through tiers soon after a wipe. If raids or high-tier weapons arrive earlier than intended, reduce the scope of the multiplier rather than silently changing values mid-wipe.
Consistency versus control
A uniform 2.0 value across categories is easy to explain and maintain. Selective values offer more control but create more edge cases: players may see doubled nodes, normal quarries, and an unexplained scrap rate. Choose consistency unless you have a clear design reason to make an exception.
Testing checklist before launch
- Start a test instance with the same identity and plugin versions used for production.
- Check one example of every advertised gather category: a resource dispenser, barrel, natural pickup, quarry, survey charge result, and Giant Excavator output where available.
- Open representative loot containers and record both item quantity and scrap separately.
- Confirm that furnace or smelting behavior has not changed unless it is explicitly part of the server design.
- Restart the server and repeat one gather and one loot check to catch settings that apply only after a reload.
- Review the console for plugin load failures, configuration errors, and duplicate hooks.
- Verify the public listing says Modded and matches the tested scope.
Keep a small worksheet with the category, configured multiplier, observed result, plugin responsible, and test date. This makes a later Rust update easier to diagnose because you can identify whether a failure is a changed game hook, a plugin incompatibility, or an accidental configuration edit.

Plugins that change gameplay depend on hooks and data structures that can change when Rust updates. After every update:
- Check whether UGather and Better Loot have released compatible versions.
- Read their configuration or migration notes before overwriting existing data files.
- Start the server in a controlled window and inspect load errors.
- Repeat at least one check for every promised gather category and one check for loot and scrap.
- Keep the previous plugin files and configuration backup until the new version has passed testing.
If a plugin fails to load, do not advertise the old 2x behavior until you have confirmed it is active. A server description that promises settings the running build no longer applies is worse than a temporary, clearly stated maintenance notice.

Troubleshooting common 2x problems
Players report normal node yields
Confirm the plugin loaded for the correct server identity and that the category is set to 2.0, not 1.0. Check for a second gather plugin, a reload that failed, or a recent Rust update that changed the relevant hook. Test with a fresh node rather than one already partially harvested.
Only some sources are doubled
That usually indicates a scope mismatch rather than a broken multiplier. Review each UGather category individually. Nodes may be at 2.0 while barrels, pickups, quarries, survey charges, or the Giant Excavator remain at normal values. Either set the missing categories to 2.0 or change the public description to the narrower promise.
Loot is unchanged while gathering is doubled
This is expected when only UGather is configured. Configure Better Loot’s Loot Multiplier separately if 2x loot is part of the design. Also check whether the container is controlled by a per-table configuration that overrides the global value.
Scrap is higher than expected
Inspect the separate Scrap Multiplier and the relevant Better Loot table. A server can have 2x loot with normal scrap, or 2x scrap in addition to a doubled loot table. Record the intended combination and test a representative container after every configuration change.
Settings revert after restart
Move persistent core variables into server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg and save plugin settings through the plugin’s documented configuration or data files. A value entered only through a temporary console command may not survive a restart or panel redeploy.
Recommended announcement wording
A precise announcement removes most disputes:
Modded server: 2x gathering for resource dispensers, barrels, bonus resources, natural pickups, quarries, survey charges, and Giant Excavator. Loot and scrap remain vanilla.
If you also double loot and scrap, say so explicitly:
Modded server: 2x gathering across all listed sources, 2x loot, and 2x scrap. Per-table exceptions are listed in the rules.
Use the wording that matches the values currently loaded, not the values you intend to configure later.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a Rust server 2x?
Put persistent core settings in server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg, install a maintained gather plugin when you need category-level controls, set each promised gather category to 2.0, and test after a restart. Configure loot and scrap separately if they are included in your definition of 2x.
Does 2x gather automatically mean 2x loot?
No. Gathering and container loot are separate systems. Better Loot provides independent Loot Multiplier and Scrap Multiplier controls, plus per-table configuration.
Should a 2x server be Community or Modded?
Modded. Facepunch and uMod guidance treat gameplay-changing plugins, including gather-rate changes, as Modded listings.
Is there one officially best 2x preset?
No. Official material documents the multiplier scale, available control surfaces, and listing rules, but it does not establish a universal player-preference winner. Choose the scope that matches your intended progression and state it clearly.
