For most servers, start with a procedural map and choose a seed and world size that match your population; use a custom .map when you need an editor-made layout or monuments that procedural generation cannot provide. Procedural maps use +server.level, +server.seed, and +server.worldsize. Custom maps use +server.levelurl, a publicly reachable direct-download URL, and no procedural seed or size parameters. Test either choice before players join, because changing a map removes bases and placed objects.
What makes a Rust server map “best”?
There is no official Facepunch list or universal winner. A map that is excellent for a 20-player community can be frustrating on a 100-player server, and a highly detailed role-play map may be inappropriate for a fast wipe. Choose against the way your server actually plays rather than trusting an unverified seed list.

- Population and travel: Larger worlds spread clans out and increase travel time; smaller worlds create earlier encounters and more competition for monuments.
- Play style: Vanilla survival generally suits procedural generation. Role-play, arena, racing, puzzle or event servers benefit from authored terrain and structures.
- Wipe schedule: A short wipe favors a map players can understand quickly. A long-running server may justify the work of commissioning or editing a custom map.
- Administrative effort: Procedural generation is simple to reproduce. A custom map adds file hosting, download reliability and compatibility checks.
- Performance: World size is not a complete performance specification. A custom map can contain unusually many entities, regardless of the nominal dimensions.
Seed databases and blog recommendations can be useful starting points, but their previews and claims are not official game guarantees. Load a candidate on your own server, inspect the spawn area and key monuments, and confirm that the current Rust version generates what you expect.

These are operational differences, not quality ratings. Pick procedural generation unless the extra control of a custom map solves a specific problem for your community.

How procedural Rust maps work
A procedural map is generated from a whole-number seed and a world-size value. The Facepunch Rust Wiki launch example is:
RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 4000The example uses port 28015, seed 1234 and size 4000; change those values to match your server. Seeds can be whole numbers from 0 through 2147483647. The wiki suggests world sizes from 1000 to 6000. Those bounds describe accepted configuration guidance, not a promise that every size is appropriate for every machine or population.
Set a procedural map from a launch command
- Stop the server. Do not edit startup arguments while the Rust server process is running.
- Back up the current save. Changing the seed or size creates a different world and removes existing buildings and placed objects.
- Set the level. Add
+server.level "Procedural Map"to the startup command. - Choose a seed. Enter one integer in the supported range. Treat a seed recommendation as a suggestion until you have loaded it in the same Rust version you plan to run.
- Choose the world size. Add
+server.worldsizefollowed by the desired value, such as4000. - Start the server and watch the console. Wait for generation to finish, then connect as an administrator and inspect the map before announcing the wipe.
The generated file is stored in the server’s maps folder with a name in the form proceduralmap.SIZE.SEED.map. The exact filename lets you identify which size and seed produced a local map when you are cleaning up old generations.

Set a procedural map in a hosting panel
- Stop the server through the panel.
- Open the startup, world or map settings supplied by the host.
- Enter the seed and world size, and select the procedural-map option if the panel exposes one.
- Save the settings and restart the server.
- If the old world keeps loading, stop the server again and remove the old
proceduralmapfile or save through the panel’s file manager, following the host’s backup procedure.
Panel labels differ, so the important result is that the final startup arguments contain the intended level, seed and size. Never delete a save without retaining a backup if you may need to restore the previous wipe.

Choosing a seed and world size
Use the population as the starting point
World size controls the amount of terrain and the distances players travel; it does not directly specify a player cap. A small community may find a very large map empty, while a crowded server can exhaust monuments and building locations on a small one. Consider expected concurrent players, peak-time clan count, wipe length and whether your rules encourage roaming or base building.

Two host-authored rules of thumb circulate: one suggests size 3500 for a 100-player server and keeping custom monuments below 20; another suggests roughly 12 GB of memory for sizes between 3500 and 4000. These recommendations disagree, are not official Rust requirements and should not be treated as a capacity guarantee. Measure your own server under peak load instead of buying hardware from either figure alone.

- Generate the map on a private instance with the same Rust branch and server configuration.
- Check the coastline, inland roads, snow and desert balance, and the distance between likely starter areas.
- Locate the monuments your rules or plugins require. A visually attractive seed can still produce poor monument access.
- Connect with a normal player account as well as an administrator so you can see spawn and travel conditions without elevated tools.
- Record the exact seed, world size, Rust version and date in your wipe notes. The same seed is not guaranteed to produce the same terrain after a game update.
Rust updates can change procedural generation. If a seed was good on an earlier version, regenerate and inspect it after updating rather than assuming the layout is unchanged.
How to set a custom Rust map with server.levelurl
A custom map is a .map file created or edited outside the normal procedural generation flow. You do not upload it into the Rust server’s save directory for remote players. Instead, place it at a public URL that serves the file directly and tell the server to use that address.

Prepare a reliable map URL
- Use a URL reachable from the public internet, not a private dashboard or local network address.
- Make the URL a direct download. A page that displays a download button, asks the visitor to log in or requires an extra click will cause the map request to fail.
- Keep the file online continuously. New players download the map from that address when they join, including after you have shut down the map editor or finished the original upload.
- Check that the response actually serves the
.mapfile and does not redirect to an HTML error page. - Retain a local copy and a versioned backup so you can restore the exact file used for a wipe.
Configure the startup arguments
- Stop the Rust server and back up the current world.
- Remove procedural arguments such as
+server.worldsizeand+server.seed. Leaving them in the command can conflict with the custom-map configuration. - Add
+server.levelurlfollowed by the complete direct-download URL. Quote the URL if your panel or shell requires quoting. - Save the startup command and restart the server.
- Watch the console for the download and map-load result, then connect from a test account before opening the server to players.
Facepunch introduced levelurl with the Puzzle Update as an alternative to the level, seed and size parameters. The exact presentation of the setting can vary by host panel, but the underlying requirement is the same: the server must be able to retrieve the file, and joining clients must be able to retrieve it from the public address.
Local testing is different from public hosting
A file:/// path can work for local testing on the machine that owns the file. It cannot serve a map to remote players because their clients cannot read a path on your computer. Replace the local path with a public direct-download URL before inviting anyone outside your test network.
What changing a map wipes
Changing the seed, world size or custom map starts a new world. Bases, deployables and other placed objects from the previous world are lost on the new map. Blueprints survive because they are stored separately from the procedural world save. Tell players the wipe scope in advance and make a backup before changing any map setting.

A safe migration sequence is:
- Announce the planned wipe and the exact downtime.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the save, map and configuration files to dated backup storage.
- Apply the new seed and size, or replace the
levelurlvalue. - Remove obsolete procedural map files only after the backup is verified.
- Start privately, test the spawn area and required monuments, and check plugin dependencies.
- Open the server publicly only after the test client can join and play normally.
Custom-map troubleshooting
The server reports an invalid or failed download
- Paste the URL into a private browser window. It should download the map immediately without a login, confirmation page or JavaScript button.
- Check that the host has not changed the filename, permissions or bandwidth limit.
- Confirm that the URL is public over the protocol your host supports and that it remains valid after a restart.
- Remove any accidental whitespace or quotation marks that became part of the URL in the panel.
The old procedural map still loads
- Stop the server and inspect the final startup command for an old
+server.level "Procedural Map",+server.seedor+server.worldsizeentry. - Keep only the custom-map setting required by your host’s current Rust configuration.
- Clear the old procedural save or map file only after making a restorable backup.
- Restart and verify the console output rather than relying on the panel’s summary screen.
Players can join, but some cannot finish loading
Test from a connection that is not on the server’s local network. A local administrator may succeed through a cached or local path while remote clients fail. Confirm that the map URL remains online and that a new client can download the file without special permissions. If the file was replaced, ensure the replacement is complete and not a partial upload.
The map loads but performance is poor
Custom maps may contain more or fewer entities than their dimensions suggest because authors can place structures and other content manually. Review the map’s entity count and your server’s memory and CPU behavior under a realistic player load. Do not infer capacity from world size alone, and do not treat the host memory opinions quoted above as official specifications.
When to choose each approach
Choose a procedural map when
- You run a conventional survival server and want the shortest setup path.
- You wipe often and do not want to maintain a separate file host.
- You need a reproducible seed-and-size configuration that administrators can enter in a panel.
- Your community prefers discovering a fresh generated coastline and monument layout each wipe.
Choose a custom map when
- Your server’s identity depends on a specific town, puzzle route, arena, race course or themed landscape.
- You need monuments or structures that procedural generation will not place in the required arrangement.
- You can guarantee a public, stable download URL for the entire period players may join.
- You have time to test client downloads, entity density and plugin compatibility before release.
Administrator’s pre-launch checklist
- Map type is documented: procedural seed and size, or custom URL.
- Current Rust version has been recorded and the map has been regenerated or revalidated after updates.
- Backups of the previous save and configuration exist.
- Procedural parameters are removed when using
server.levelurl. - Custom URL is a direct public download and stays online.
- Private test confirms spawn points, monuments, plugins and ordinary-player access.
- Expected population, travel distances and hardware behavior have been evaluated on your own server.
- Players have been told exactly what will wipe and what will remain; blueprints remain available because they are stored separately.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: use a tested procedural seed and an appropriate world size for the simplest, most reliable deployment; use a custom .map only when its authored layout is worth the hosting and compatibility responsibilities. In both cases, test the exact map on the exact Rust version before the public wipe.
