The best Samsung Gear VR games and apps are best treated as historical recommendations, not a current download list. Standouts include the cooperative puzzle game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, hands-free adventure Land’s End, and VR sandbox Minecraft. Whether you can play any of them now depends on having a working copy, a compatible phone and headset revision, and software that still runs.
Notable Gear VR games to look for
These picks reflect distinctive ways Gear VR games used a phone-powered headset. They are curated examples from the platform’s historical library, not an official ranking or a claim that the titles are currently downloadable.
| Title | Best for | Input or player needs | What the archive establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes | Parties and cooperative puzzle-solving | At least two people: one defuses the bomb in VR while others consult the manual | The Vault records a Gear VR test on Galaxy S8; that historical test does not establish present-day access or compatibility. The Vault’s title entry |
| Land’s End | Solo exploration and environmental puzzles | Hands-free; no controller required | The Vault records a Gear VR test on Galaxy S8. The Vault’s title entry |
| Minecraft | Players who want a familiar sandbox in VR | Gamepad required | The Vault records a Gear VR test on Galaxy S8; a compatible gamepad and working copy are needed. The Vault’s title entry |
Other notable historical Gear VR titles include Augmented Empire, Affected: The Manor, Blazerush, the Dead Secret series, Spark of Light, The Well, and Witchblood. These are examples identified by the Gear VR Codex, an independent archive; its catalog does not prove that any particular title can still be installed on Gear VR. Can you still download and play Gear VR games?
Possibly, but do not count on the Oculus Store as a reliable way to obtain or update a title. Samsung said no new Gear VR apps would be released to the Oculus Store after September 15, 2020. Samsung’s 2020 notice Samsung later gave March 18, 2024 as the date Meta would end Gear VR app installation and update support. Samsung’s 2024 service notice The Gear VR Codex has also reported store closure and broken purchase routes; that is independent archival reporting, not an official Samsung or Meta availability guarantee. Samsung’s 2020 notice said existing library apps could continue to be used at that time. That historical statement should not be read as a promise about current downloads, updates, or whether a particular app will still launch. Samsung’s 2020 notice The practical answer depends on whether the app is already in your library or otherwise available to you, whether its installation and sign-in flow still works, and whether it runs on your exact device.
Check phone, headset, and Android compatibility first

Samsung says Gear VR is unsupported on Android 12 because the required software is not included. A phone that physically fits the headset can therefore still be unsuitable for running it. Samsung Gear VR support and setup guide
- Identify the headset revision and confirm that its phone holder fits your handset.
- Check whether the headset needs a USB-C or Micro-USB adapter and whether that adapter is included.
- Check the phone’s Android version against Samsung’s support information.
- Confirm that the specific game is already accessible and that its required controller or other setup is available.
Why Gear VR availability is uncertain
Gear VR is a discontinued platform. Meta’s November 7, 2019 developer announcement said later SDK releases would no longer support Gear VR development, while existing apps remained usable at that time. Meta’s developer FAQ then said: “All Gear VR games and applications continue to be supported so people can still download and experience your title.” That described the position in 2019, not the present state of the store or an assurance that an app still works today. Archives can help identify games and their historical requirements, but reputation and old compatibility notes are not proof of current availability. The Gear VR Codex separates download status from operating status and warns that archived software is no longer supported by its original developers. Its catalog is useful for checking a title, but it is not an official service-status page. Gear VR Codex catalog
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing among copies you can access
- Choose Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes if you have at least one other player and want a shared puzzle experience.
- Choose Land’s End if you want a hands-free option without a separate controller.
- Choose Minecraft only if you have a compatible gamepad as well as a working copy.
Before paying for legacy hardware or a title, verify that the exact game can be obtained and launched on your phone and headset combination. Do not assume that a historical Gear VR listing, an archived APK status, or compatibility with later Quest hardware establishes that it works on a present-day Gear VR setup.
