For most newcomers, Persona 5 Royal is the best place to start: its Phantom Thieves premise is immediately inviting, and ATLUS lists it for a broad range of platforms. If you prefer a rural murder mystery, start with Persona 4 Golden; if the supernatural Dark Hour draws you in, choose Persona 3 Reload. This ranking covers the numbered mainline games, counts the two connected Persona 2 releases separately, and leaves spin-offs out.
How this ranking works
This is a recommendation ranking, not a universal verdict. It weighs how easily each game welcomes a new player, the appeal of its story premise, the design and presentation of the version discussed, and the practical question of finding it on your platform and in your region. A reader who puts story or historical importance ahead of approachability could reasonably choose a different order.

The list follows the mainline lineage: Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5. For the top three, it ranks the current versions Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal. ATLUS’s games catalog and company history establish the older entries; its US series portal focuses on contemporary releases.
Best mainline Persona games, ranked
1. Persona 5 Royal — best starting point for most newcomers
Persona 5 Royal follows students in Tokyo who become the Phantom Thieves, taking on corrupt adults by entering supernatural palaces. That clear, high-energy hook makes it easy to understand what kind of adventure you are signing up for, while its school and social-life elements give the story room to breathe. For a new player who wants a modern mainline game without first needing franchise history, it is the most straightforward recommendation.
#1 Best Overall
- Base game and over 40 items of previously released downloadable content
- Explore Tokyo, unlock Personas, customize your own personal Thieves Den, experience alternate endings, and more
- Become the ultimate Phantom Thief and defy conventions, discover the power within, and fight for justice in the definitive version of Personal 5 Royal
- Choose between Japanese and English VO
ATLUS describes it as a role-playing game and lists physical and digital editions across several platforms on its official Persona 5 Royal page. Check the relevant regional storefront or retailer for the edition and platform you want; listed availability does not guarantee local stock.
2. Persona 4 Golden — best for a close-knit cast and murder mystery
Persona 4 Golden moves the action to Inaba, where a murder investigation unfolds alongside school days, friendships, and everyday life. ATLUS’s official page emphasizes that mix of social activity and investigation. Choose it over Persona 5 Royal if a small-town mystery and an ensemble that grows closer are the stronger draw.
The ATLUS page identifies its listed 2023 release as digital only. That describes the edition on that page, not every possible historical or regional release; check local availability for your platform before buying.
Rank #2
3. Persona 3 Reload — best for the Dark Hour premise
Persona 3 Reload centers on the Dark Hour, a hidden period outside ordinary time, and a group of students confronting the threats within it. ATLUS calls the game “a captivating reimagining of the genre-defining RPG, reborn for the modern era” on its official product page. Its modern presentation makes this a practical way to experience Persona 3 if the story premise appeals to you.

As with the other current releases, platform and regional availability can differ, so verify the exact edition before purchasing.
4. Persona 2: Innocent Sin — a compelling older chapter for story-first players
Persona 2: Innocent Sin earns its place for readers interested in the series’ earlier storytelling and history. It is a distinct game, not a shorthand for both Persona 2 releases. Its older design and access situation make it a less convenient starting point than the current versions above, but players willing to explore the series’ past may find it especially rewarding.
Rank #3
- Prepare for the award-winning RPG experience in this definitive edition of Persona 5 Royal
- This title is packed with beloved characters, confidants, story depth, and plenty of locations to explore with many opportunities to strengthen your abilities in the metaverse and in your daily life
- Explore Tokyo, unlock Personas, customize your own personal Thieves Den, experience alternate endings, and more
- Become the ultimate Phantom Thief and defy conventions, discover the power within, and fight for justice in the definitive version of Personal 5 Royal
ATLUS’s catalog supports its place in the mainline lineage, but current access depends on region and platform. Confirm that a legitimate edition is available where you play before planning a playthrough.
5. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment — the second half of the Persona 2 story
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is the second Persona 2 game and part of a connected story with Innocent Sin; it is not a replacement or alternate edition of the first game. If you intend to play both, follow story order: Innocent Sin first, then Eternal Punishment.
It ranks below the modern entries as a general recommendation because its older design and current access are less convenient for a newcomer. Its position is not a judgment that the story matters less: for a player committed to the connected narrative, it is an essential second chapter.
Rank #4
- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
6. Persona — historically important, but the toughest first recommendation here
The original Persona, also known in English release history as Revelations: Persona, is a foundational mainline entry. It ranks last here because its older design and mechanics can make it less comfortable for players whose reference point is Persona 3, 4, or 5. That is an accessibility judgment, not a claim that it lacks historical value or that every player will find it difficult.
ATLUS’s catalog provides context for the older lineage. Because older releases and access differ by region and platform, check the edition available to you rather than assuming a current storefront release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Persona game should you play first?
- Choose Persona 5 Royal for the most approachable general starting recommendation and a Tokyo Phantom Thieves story.
- Choose Persona 4 Golden if you want Inaba’s murder mystery and a close-knit ensemble.
- Choose Persona 3 Reload if the Dark Hour premise is the one you most want to explore.
- Choose Innocent Sin followed by Eternal Punishment if your priority is experiencing the connected Persona 2 story in order.
- Choose the original Persona if exploring the series’ roots matters more to you than a modern first-play experience.
What to check before buying
Edition details are not uniform across these games. ATLUS lists physical and digital editions for Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload; its page for the 2023 Persona 4 Golden release says digital only. Those official listings are useful starting points, but they do not establish live inventory or availability in every country. Check the storefront or retailer for your region and confirm the platform and format on the specific product listing.

Why other rankings may differ
There is no official or definitive ranking that settles the order of these games. A 2026 GamesRadar+ ranking offers another editorial perspective, including commentary on older entries. Differences between lists reflect different priorities—such as story, mechanics, historical influence, or ease of access—not a single objective scorecard.
