For most iPhone screen recordings, start with Apple’s built-in Screen Recording control: it captures the screen without another download and saves the result to Photos. Consider a third-party app if you specifically want advertised extras such as quality controls, a face-camera reaction, or editing and sharing tools. The options below are compared by their listed features, not by hands-on tests of recording quality or reliability.
What to use for an iPhone screen recording
Apple’s built-in recorder is the straightforward choice for capturing a tutorial, app demo, or gameplay clip when basic capture and a saved video are all you need. A separate app may suit a workflow that calls for more recording controls, commentary, camera reactions, or editing and export options.
Apple notes that some apps may block recording, and screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. Those restrictions apply regardless of which recorder you prefer. Apple Support’s screen-recording instructions were published September 17, 2026.
Use Apple’s built-in Screen Recording control
- Open Control Center. Tap the Screen Recording control. If it is not there, add Screen Recording to Control Center using your iPhone’s Control Center customization options; the exact interface can vary by iOS version.
- Wait for the countdown. Apple’s instructions say a three-second countdown begins before capture. Switch to the app or screen you want to record and perform the actions you want to capture.
- Enable microphone audio if needed. Before starting, press and hold the Screen Recording control, turn on Microphone, then start recording. This is useful for spoken narration; it does not make an app’s blocked content recordable.
- Stop and find the video. Stop the recording when finished. Apple says recordings are saved in Photos, under the Screen Recordings media type.
Apple’s stated limitation is clear: “Some apps might not allow you to record their content, and you can’t record your screen and use screen mirroring at the same time.” See Apple Support for the current workflow and restrictions.

Third-party iPhone screen recorder options
These two US App Store listings advertise different feature sets. Their features, compatibility, ratings, and subscription terms can change, and the listings are not independent tests of output quality or ease of use.
Screen Recorder
The US App Store listing advertises screen capture with resolution, bitrate, and frame-rate controls, face-camera reactions, dual-camera recording, audio recording, and an integrated editor. It displayed 4.5 stars from 34K ratings when accessed October 3, 2026. At that time, it listed weekly and yearly premium subscriptions, including a displayed weekly price of $4.99 and annual price of $49.99, with a three-day free trial. Check the current US App Store listing for availability, device requirements, and current terms before installing.

Record it! :: Screen Recorder
The US App Store listing advertises configurable recording quality and encoder/audio options, commentary, editing, organization, and exports to Photos, AirDrop, Files, email, or compatible apps. It displayed 4.6 stars from 454K ratings when accessed October 3, 2026. The listing says sharing is limited to 10-minute videos and that Record It! Pro enables longer sharing. These are listing details, not independently tested limits; check the current US App Store listing.
How to choose: match the features to your recording

Recording restrictions and a note for developers
If a recording turns out blank or omits protected content, the app may not allow its content to be captured. Apple also says recording and screen mirroring cannot be used simultaneously. Trying another recorder does not establish that protected content can be captured; check the app’s rules and Apple’s guidance.

Apple’s developer sample describes a system content-sharing picker for streaming selected content, with controls for audio, recording, and camera. It also describes recording to a file, a rolling buffer of up to 15 seconds, and camera preview during in-app captures. The sample requires a device running iOS 27 or later, so it is developer material for a particular platform version—not a consumer app comparison or a feature claim about the third-party apps above.
