OBS Studio and Camtasia are the clearest choices when you need a screen recording that keeps audio sources on separate tracks. OBS is free, open-source, and configurable; Camtasia combines recording with editing. Descript can capture computer audio during screen recording, but the official documentation reviewed does not establish separate tracks for its ordinary screen-recording workflow.
What multitrack audio means in a screen recording
A recorder has multitrack audio when it preserves independent sources as selectable tracks in the recording or editable project. For example, you should be able to adjust, mute, replace, or clean up your microphone narration without changing the game or computer audio.
Recording a microphone and system sound together into one mixed track is not multitrack recording. Before choosing software, check which sources can be separated—such as microphone, system or application audio, camera audio, and remote guests—and whether the tracks remain available in the editing workflow you plan to use.

OBS Studio: best configurable free option
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free and open-source video recording and live-streaming software, with Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Its multitrack workflow is flexible, but it is not automatic: assign sources to tracks and make sure the desired tracks are enabled for recording.

Set up separate recording tracks
- In OBS, locate the Audio Mixer and open Advanced Audio Properties.
- For each audio source, select the recording tracks that should contain it. Decide deliberately which sources belong together and which need independent control.
- Open Settings → Output and enable the tracks you intend to record. Confirm that your recording output is configured to include them.
- Make a short test recording. Open it in the editor you intend to use and verify that each expected source appears on the correct track before recording a full session.
The OBS guide’s example sends sources to track 1 for ordinary playback and uses tracks 2–6 to keep sources separated. Track 1 is useful when you want a basic player to produce a complete mix, while the additional tracks give an editor independent sources to work with. Adapt assignments to your sources rather than assuming OBS isolates everything by default.
OBS cautions: “It is important to note that all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time so if you are not planning on processing every video through an editor before publishing it, send all of your audio sources to track 1 like you see in the example below.” That guidance is from the OBS Project’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, dated 2023-07-14. A file can therefore appear to be missing audio in a basic player even when other tracks are present; inspect it in a compatible editor.

Camtasia: best integrated recorder and editor
TechSmith says Camtasia can capture the screen, camera, system audio, and microphone on separate tracks, then let you adjust those elements independently while editing. That makes it a straightforward documented option when you want recording and post-production together rather than configuring a capture tool and choosing a separate editor.
TechSmith also advertises 4K screen capture on its feature page. That is a vendor feature description, not an independent test; check the current requirements and edition details for your operating system before buying. The cited pages do not establish current pricing or precise OS-specific recording limits.

Does Descript record separate screen-audio tracks?
Descript’s help documentation says its desktop recorder can capture system-wide computer audio when screen recording is enabled, and its web recorder can capture audio from a specific browser tab. That confirms audio capture, but not that ordinary screen recordings isolate each source into separate tracks.
Descript also describes multitrack recording for remote Rooms sessions. That is a different workflow and should not be treated as proof that a standard screen recording creates separate microphone and computer-audio tracks. If track isolation is essential, verify the current screen-recording workflow before relying on Descript for it.

Choose by your editing workflow
- Choose OBS if you want free, open-source capture, broad listed desktop operating-system support, and control over track assignment. Allow time to configure and test the routing.
- Choose Camtasia if separate screen, camera, system-audio, and microphone tracks plus integrated editing match your workflow. Confirm current pricing and platform requirements directly with TechSmith.
- Consider Descript cautiously if your key need is capturing computer audio, but do not assume that capture means separate tracks in a normal screen recording.
Common multitrack problems and fixes
A standard player plays only one source
Many standard video players play one audio track at a time. Open the recording in an editor that exposes multiple tracks, or include a complete mix on track 1 when you need uncomplicated playback without editing.
A source is missing from the recording
Check that the source was assigned to the intended track in Advanced Audio Properties and that the track was enabled under Settings → Output. Then make a short test capture and inspect it in a multitrack-capable editor.

Microphone and computer audio cannot be adjusted independently
If they are baked into one mixed track, their levels cannot be independently changed afterward. Configure separate track assignments before recording and verify the result with a test file.

Copyright and YouTube considerations
Separate audio tracks make editing easier, but do not grant permission to use music, game audio, or other copyrighted material. Check that you have the rights needed for the material you record and publish, and review YouTube’s current rules before posting or scheduling a stream. For a prerecorded channel stream, use the copyright safety checklist before uploading.
