To add a solid color around a video that does not fill the frame, change the canvas or page background color, or place a solid-color layer beneath the clip. To replace the scene behind a person, first remove that background with a chroma key or background-removal tool, then put the color layer underneath. These are different edits: changing the canvas color does not cut out anything in the recorded scene.
Choose the right kind of background edit
| What you want | What to do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fill empty space around a smaller or differently shaped clip | Change the canvas or page background color, or add a color layer beneath the clip. | Choose the target aspect ratio and decide whether the clip can be resized or cropped. |
| Put a clean, full-frame color behind footage in a layered edit | Create a color matte and place it on a lower timeline track. | Match the matte to the sequence settings and keep it beneath the footage. |
| Replace scenery recorded behind a person | Isolate the subject with background removal or chroma key, then put a solid color below. | Keying quality depends on subject edges, backdrop lighting, and contrast between the backdrop and clothing. |
The documented controls vary by editor, device, and version. Canva’s instructions apply to a page/design background, CapCut’s cited workflow is for desktop, Adobe’s is for Premiere, and Apple’s is for iMovie on Mac; do not assume the same labels appear in every mobile app.
Change the canvas color in Canva or CapCut
Canva: set the page background
- Select the page background in your design.
- Choose Background color from the floating toolbar.
- Select a solid-color tile, or a gradient if you want more than one color.
This changes the page/design background; it does not, by itself, remove the recorded scene behind a person. Canva notes that adding or changing backgrounds is not available in Canva Docs. Canva’s background instructions
CapCut desktop: fill the canvas around the clip
- Import the video and place it on the timeline.
- Resize the clip as needed.
- Choose Video > Canvas > Color and select the background color.
CapCut also documents Blur and Pattern choices in this canvas area. The control fills the area around the resized video; it does not remove the clip’s original background. Interface labels can vary across versions. CapCut’s desktop canvas instructions

Add a color layer in Adobe Premiere
A Premiere color matte is a solid-color clip. It can serve as a background, overlay, or transition. To use it behind footage:
- In the Project panel, select New Item > Color Matte.
- In the dialog, match the matte’s width, height, timebase, and pixel aspect ratio to the sequence.
- Choose the color in the Color Picker, name the matte, and confirm.
- Place the matte on a lower video track than the footage that should appear in front of it. Extend it for the duration you need.
If the matte is above opaque footage, it will cover that footage; timeline layer order determines what appears in front. For details, see Adobe’s Color Matte guide (last updated August 18, 2026).

Replace the recorded background behind a person
A solid color layer alone cannot reveal a person in front of it if the original footage is opaque. First isolate the subject. The documented workflows below use footage recorded against a green or blue backdrop, then place the replacement color on a lower track or as the background clip.
Premiere: use Ultra Key
- Put the green- or blue-screen footage on a video track above the replacement background.
- Apply Ultra Key to the keyed footage and use its eyedropper to sample the backdrop color.
- Refine the result with Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup.
- Adjust Spill Suppression to reduce color spill on the subject.
- Keep the replacement color or footage on a lower video track so it shows through the removed area.
Adobe recommends an evenly lit green or blue screen and avoiding clothing similar to the backdrop color. A physical screen is relevant to this filming-and-keying workflow; it is not needed to fill empty canvas space or create a color matte. See Adobe’s Ultra Key guide (last updated January 7, 2026).

iMovie for Mac: use Green/Blue Screen
- Place a solid-color or animated background clip in the timeline.
- Place the green- or blue-screen clip above the background clip as an overlay.
- Select the overlay and choose the Green/Blue Screen effect.
- Adjust the effect with its controls to refine the result.
Apple says the color removed is based on the dominant color in the frame at the playhead when Green/Blue Screen is selected. See Apple’s iMovie Mac guide and Apple Support’s Green/Blue Screen instructions. These steps are for iMovie on Mac; other Apple devices may have different controls.
Fix common problems
- The color appears only around the clip, not behind the person: You changed the canvas or page background. Use background removal or a chroma key to isolate the subject, then put the color beneath it.
- The color layer covers the whole video: Move the matte or background clip to a lower track than the foreground footage.
- The keyed subject has rough edges or leftover backdrop: Refine the key’s matte-generation and cleanup controls. Uneven lighting can make the backdrop harder to isolate.
- Colored edges appear on hair or clothing: Adjust spill suppression; clothing close to the screen color can also be difficult to separate cleanly.
- You cannot find a named control: Check the instructions for your editor and platform. The cited CapCut steps are for desktop, Canva’s are for page/design backgrounds, and Apple’s are for iMovie on Mac; labels and availability can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
