There is no single best semiconductor ETF for every investor. SMH is the clearest choice if you want large, liquid global leaders and accept substantial Nvidia and Taiwan exposure. SOXX is a slightly lower-cost, broad large-company U.S.-listed option. XSD is the better fit if equal weighting and a larger roster of companies matter more than concentrating in the biggest chip stocks.
All three diversify within semiconductors, not across the stock market. Their returns can still be driven by the same inventory cycle, capital-spending cycle, interest-rate changes, export controls and geopolitical shocks. Use the comparison below to match the index design and risks to your existing portfolio.

What “diversified chip exposure” actually means
A semiconductor ETF can spread money among chip designers, manufacturers, equipment suppliers and related companies. That is useful when you do not want to select individual stocks, but it does not eliminate sector risk. Demand for computers, phones, data-center hardware and automobiles can weaken together; manufacturers can build too much inventory; and governments can restrict technology exports. A semiconductor fund can therefore fall even when its individual holdings are spread across dozens of companies.

The most important diversification choice among these three funds is the weighting method:
- Market-cap-oriented weighting gives larger companies larger positions. A winner such as Nvidia can become a major driver of returns, while smaller constituents have less effect.
- Equal weighting assigns approximately similar starting weights to constituents. Rebalancing sells part of strong performers and adds to laggards, reducing dependence on one mega-cap but increasing exposure to smaller, often more volatile companies.
Check both the number of holdings and the percentage in the largest positions. “More holdings” does not automatically mean more economic diversification if many companies depend on the same customers, fabrication capacity or technology cycle.
SMH: global leaders with notable concentration
How the index is built
VanEck says SMH seeks to replicate, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. The index is intended to track companies involved in semiconductor production and equipment. The fund held 26 securities in VanEck’s September 23, 2026 snapshot.
Top holdings and what they imply
That snapshot listed Nvidia at 19.36%, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing at 9.16%, AMD at 5.66%, Broadcom at 5.32% and Micron at 5.01%. Together, those five positions represented 44.51% of the fund at that date. A strong or weak result from Nvidia alone can therefore materially affect SMH’s daily and annual return.
The concentration can be useful if your objective is decisive exposure to established industry leaders. It is a drawback if you already own those companies through a broad-market or technology fund, because adding SMH may increase your effective position in the same names without making your overall portfolio more balanced.

Geographic exposure
VanEck’s September 30, 2026 country figures were United States 78.78%, Taiwan 9.24%, the Netherlands 5.48% and South Korea 4.40%. The Taiwan allocation adds exposure to the region’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and to Taiwan-specific geopolitical and currency risks. Country weights can move with prices and portfolio changes, so treat these percentages as a dated snapshot.
Who should consider SMH
- Investors who want a compact basket of large, widely followed semiconductor companies.
- Investors comfortable with a high Nvidia weight and meaningful foundry and Taiwan exposure.
- Investors who value global exposure inside a U.S.-listed vehicle and will monitor concentration over time.
SOXX: a broad large-company U.S. semiconductor core
Mandate and current figures
iShares describes SOXX as seeking to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. equities in the semiconductor sector. The captured 2026 data show 30 holdings, a 0.33% expense ratio and a 0.21% 30-day SEC yield. The yield is a standardized recent-income measure, not a promise of future distributions or total return.

Why it can be a middle-ground choice
SOXX sits between SMH’s more explicitly global country mix and XSD’s equal-weight structure. Its U.S.-equity mandate can make it easier to understand alongside domestic holdings, while its 30-company basket still leaves meaningful exposure to the largest chip businesses. The fee is 0.02 percentage points below the captured SMH and XSD figures; that difference is modest, so do not choose solely on expense ratio.
Before buying, inspect the current constituent list and top weights. A fund can have more holdings than SMH yet still overlap heavily with Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD and other companies you already own. The relevant question is your combined exposure after adding SOXX, not the fund’s name or holding count in isolation.
Who should consider SOXX
- Investors seeking a familiar U.S.-listed semiconductor-sector core with large-company coverage.
- Investors who prefer the captured 0.33% fee, provided current spreads, holdings and tracking are acceptable.
- Investors who want a simple comparison point between a concentrated leader basket and an equal-weight fund.
XSD: equal weighting and a wider constituent roster
Index design
State Street says the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index is an equal-weighted index drawing constituents from the semiconductor segment of the S&P TMI. XSD held 48 securities and reported a 0.35% gross expense ratio in State Street’s October 2026 fund characteristics.

How equal weighting changes the experience
Equal weighting limits the effect of any one mega-cap winner or loser. A smaller company can contribute as much to the portfolio’s return as a much larger company after rebalancing, so XSD provides more mid-cap participation than a market-cap-oriented fund. That can broaden the opportunity set, but it can also increase volatility and produce larger tracking differences versus market-cap-weighted peers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Equal weighting is not a guarantee of lower risk. Smaller companies may have less diversified revenue, weaker balance sheets or greater sensitivity to financing conditions. During a narrow rally led by a few mega-cap stocks, XSD can lag a concentrated fund; during a broad industry advance, its wider participation can help.
Who should consider XSD
- Investors who want to reduce dependence on the largest semiconductor names.
- Investors comfortable with more mid-cap exposure and potentially higher volatility.
- Investors who regard 48 constituents and equal weighting as more important than matching the market-cap leaders.
Concentration, geography and fees: the decisions that matter most
Single-stock concentration
SMH’s dated top-five weights demonstrate how quickly a semiconductor ETF can become a bet on a few companies. SOXX also requires a current top-weight check, because its large-company orientation can create substantial overlap with major technology holdings. XSD’s equal-weight design is specifically intended to reduce the impact of one constituent, although the fund remains exposed to the same industry cycle.
U.S. versus international exposure
SMH provides explicitly reported non-U.S. exposure, including Taiwan, the Netherlands and South Korea. SOXX is described as a U.S.-equity semiconductor index. XSD’s index description identifies its constituents through the S&P TMI semiconductor segment; the cited material does not establish a complete country-weight table. If geography is central to your decision, use each provider’s current country breakdown rather than inferring it from the ticker or fund name.
Expense ratios are only one cost
The captured annual expense figures are 0.35% for SMH, 0.33% for SOXX and 0.35% gross for XSD. Gross and net expenses are not interchangeable: a gross figure is before any contractual waiver or reimbursement that might reduce the amount actually charged. Also consider bid-ask spreads, commissions (if any), premiums or discounts to net asset value, taxes and the cost of replacing an existing position.

How to choose an ETF step by step
- Define the role. Decide whether the ETF is a small satellite position, a dedicated semiconductor allocation or a replacement for individual chip stocks. A satellite position can tolerate more concentration than a supposed core holding.
- Measure your current exposure. List Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Micron, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and other chip-related holdings in your broad-market, technology and sector funds. Add the percentages to see your look-through exposure.
- Choose the weighting preference. Select a market-cap-oriented structure if you want the largest companies to dominate, or equal weighting if limiting single-stock influence is the priority.
- Set a geography limit. Decide how much Taiwan, other non-U.S. markets and currency exposure you can accept. SMH’s September 2026 allocation illustrates why this check matters.
- Compare current costs and trading conditions. Review the latest expense ratio, average spread, assets, trading volume and premium/discount behavior. The historical figures in this article are not a quote for the day you trade.
- Read the index and rebalancing rules. Find out how constituents enter and leave, how often weights reset and whether caps limit individual positions. Rebalancing can create turnover and taxable distributions in a taxable account.
- Choose a position size and review date. Write down a maximum percentage for the semiconductor sector and a schedule for checking concentration. Do not increase the position merely because a recent rally made the fund look safer.
Portfolio overlap: avoid doubling the same bet
A broad-market fund may already own the largest semiconductor companies. A technology fund can add another layer of exposure, and an ETF such as SMH or SOXX can make that concentration less visible because it is packaged as one ticker. Export your holdings, group them by company and calculate each company’s total percentage across accounts.
Use the result to answer three questions:
- What percentage of the total portfolio depends on Nvidia or another single chip company?
- How much of the portfolio is exposed to semiconductor capital spending and inventory conditions?
- Would XSD’s equal weighting actually change the combined exposure, or would your other funds still dominate the result?
If the answer shows excessive overlap, reduce the new ETF size, select a less concentrated structure or rebalance another technology position. Diversification should be measured at the household-portfolio level, not by counting tickers.

Industry cycles
Chip demand and manufacturing capacity move in cycles. Customers may cut orders after building excess inventory, while equipment makers and foundries can face abrupt changes in capital spending. A diversified basket spreads company-specific risk but cannot remove this common cycle.
Export controls and regulation
Restrictions on advanced-chip sales, manufacturing equipment or investment can affect revenue, supply chains and valuations. Rules can change quickly and may affect companies in different countries unevenly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRates and valuation
Semiconductor companies often carry growth expectations in their prices. Higher interest rates can reduce the value investors assign to future earnings, even if near-term chip demand is stable.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Geopolitics and supply concentration
Manufacturing and advanced packaging depend on specialized locations and suppliers. SMH’s reported Taiwan allocation makes that exposure visible; other funds can have similar economic dependencies even when a country percentage is not shown in the cited snapshot.
Tracking and rebalancing effects
Fees, trading costs, corporate actions and index reconstitutions cause ETF returns to differ from the underlying index. Equal-weight funds may trade more as they restore target weights, while market-cap-oriented funds can drift toward the latest winners.
Practical implementation and monitoring
Buying
Use a limit order when the spread is wide or markets are volatile, and check the live bid, ask and indicative net asset value before submitting. Avoid assuming that a low share price means a fund is cheaper; the expense ratio and portfolio exposure determine the economic cost.

Which fund fits which investor?
| If your priority is… | Most natural starting point | Trade-off to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Large, liquid global leaders | SMH | High Nvidia and leading-company concentration, plus meaningful Taiwan exposure |
| A mainstream U.S.-listed semiconductor core | SOXX | Continued overlap with major technology holdings and large-cap exposure |
| Less dependence on mega-cap names | XSD | More mid-cap participation, volatility and possible tracking differences |
| The lowest captured fee among these snapshots | SOXX | The 0.02-point difference versus 0.35% peers is small relative to concentration and trading costs |
These are use-case matches, not performance forecasts. A fund that fits your stated preference can still underperform another one for long periods because the weighting methods own different risks.
Bottom line for diversified chip exposure
Pick SMH for a concentrated, globally exposed leader basket; SOXX for a broad large-company U.S. semiconductor core with the lowest captured expense ratio of the three; and XSD for equal weighting, 48 constituents and less reliance on mega-cap winners. Before choosing, calculate overlap with your existing funds, decide how much sector and geographic risk you can tolerate, and verify current holdings, fees and spreads. None of these ETFs replaces a diversified all-market portfolio.
