Best Server-Side-Only Valheim Mods for Your Server (2026 Guide)

Server devcommands is the clearest server-side choice. Learn which farming, storage, and inventory mods really work with vanilla clients—and which require a shared install.

If your goal is a dedicated Valheim server that friends can join without installing a client mod, start with Server devcommands for administration. For gameplay changes, the safest candidates are more conditional: PlantEverything, MultiUserChest, and Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock are cataloged for both server and client use, while PlantEasily is cataloged as client-side. ExtraSlots explicitly requires a client installation for its additional interface and slot behavior, so it is not a strict server-only choice.

Thunderstore’s “Server-side” label is a useful screening filter, not proof that every feature works with an unmodded player. The package’s current documentation, the feature being used, and the Valheim release you run determine whether clients really can remain vanilla.

What “server-side-only” means in Valheim

A server-side-only mod is installed on the dedicated server while players connect with an unmodified Valheim client. The server can enforce rules, change world behavior, or provide shared services without asking every player to manage the same plug-in. That arrangement is attractive for casual groups because joining remains simple: players need the game and the server address, not a synchronized modpack.

In practice, mods fall into three useful categories:

Category What players experience Typical limitation
Strict server-only Players can connect with vanilla clients and use the advertised feature. Features must be transmitted or enforced by the server; client-only menus and visual effects are usually unavailable.
Optional-client A vanilla client can connect, but an installed client plug-in may unlock a richer interface or extra effects. Behavior can differ depending on whether a player has the companion mod.
Client-required Players need the same mod installed before they can use the feature, and sometimes before they can connect. Every player must maintain a compatible installation.

That distinction matters most for interface-heavy features. A server can store extra inventory data, for example, but a vanilla client has no built-in controls for displaying or moving those items. A catalog tag may therefore describe where a package can run, not whether every advertised feature is available without a client installation.

Best candidates at a glance

Mod Primary use Client expectation Main impact
Server devcommands Administration and moderation Strongest server-side fit; confirm the current dedicated-server instructions Operator commands and utilities
PlantEverything Farming and decoration Thunderstore tags it Server-side and Client-side; treat it as a shared-install candidate until package documentation confirms client-free operation Adds cultivator planting options
PlantEasily Farming workflow Cataloged Client-side; do not present it as server-only Placement, harvesting, and replanting conveniences
MultiUserChest Shared storage Tagged Server-side and Client-side; verify the current multiplayer requirement Allows simultaneous chest interaction
Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock Storage quality of life Shared-install candidate; check the package’s current client requirement Stacking, sorting, storing, trashing, and restocking actions
ExtraSlots Inventory and equipment expansion Client installation is required for its extra interface and slot behavior Additional equipment, quick, food, ammo, utility, and inventory rows
Valheim Plus Broad configurable overhaul Requirements vary by feature and release; not a low-risk strict server-only default Changes many game systems at once

Server devcommands: the clearest administration choice

Thunderstore describes Server devcommands as enabling “devcommands and utilities for server admins.” That makes it the best starting point when the problem is administration rather than a new progression system. It is aimed at the operator: moderation, controlled troubleshooting, and routine server management can be handled from the server environment instead of asking every player to install a utility mod.

Where it fits

  • Use it on a private co-op server where one or more trusted operators need administrative controls.
  • Keep it separate from gameplay overhauls when you want a predictable player experience.
  • Document who may use administrative commands; a server-side tool can affect everyone in the world.

Deployment checks

  1. Stop the dedicated server and make a dated backup of the world files and server configuration.
  2. Install the Valheim mod loader required by the package, then place Server devcommands exactly where its current package instructions specify.
  3. Start the server once and inspect the startup log for a successful plug-in load and any dependency or version errors.
  4. Join with a vanilla client and test an administrative action using a low-risk situation, such as a temporary test world or a disposable character.
  5. Record the package version alongside the Valheim version so an update can be rolled back consistently.

“Strongest fit” does not mean an unconditional guarantee. Dedicated-server packaging instructions can change, and an update may alter what is synchronized to clients. Confirm the current package page before deploying it to a long-running world.

Farming and decoration mods

PlantEverything

PlantEverything expands the cultivator so players can plant berry bushes, thistle, dandelions, mushrooms, previously unavailable tree types, and other decorative flora. For a settlement-focused server, that is a meaningful world-building change: players can create gardens and landscapes that vanilla farming does not support.

The important compatibility detail is its Thunderstore labeling. PlantEverything is tagged both Server-side and Client-side. That tells you the package has a server role and a client role; it does not establish that a vanilla player can use every planting option. Treat it as a shared-install candidate unless the current package documentation explicitly confirms a client-free mode.

How to introduce it safely

  • Test new plant types in a copy of the world first. Decorative flora can become saved-world objects, so removing the mod later may leave objects that vanilla cannot handle cleanly.
  • Have one player with the package verify that ordinary, unmodded players can see and interact with the planted objects.
  • Do not assume that a client can place every item merely because the server accepts the recipe or object.
  • Keep a rollback backup from before the first large planting project.

PlantEverything is a good choice when the group values creative building and is willing to verify client behavior. It is not a safe “install on the server and forget about clients” recommendation based on the catalog label alone.

PlantEasily

PlantEasily addresses the repetitive work around crop layout. Its listed functions include evenly spaced crops, row and column planting, grid snapping, prevention of invalid placement, bulk harvesting, and optional automatic replanting. Those tools are useful on agricultural bases where players want consistent geometry rather than one plant at a time.

The catalog tags PlantEasily as Client-side. Because its core value is placement and interaction workflow, the client component is significant, not incidental. Do not advertise it to friends as a server-only mod. If you install it, plan for the players who want the convenience to install the same package and version, and test what happens when a vanilla player joins.

Shared-storage improvements

MultiUserChest

MultiUserChest allows multiple players to interact with the same chest at the same time. That directly addresses a common co-op bottleneck: one person opening a chest while everyone else waits or scatters storage across nearby containers.

Its catalog tags are both Server-side and Client-side, so the correct classification is “shared-install option pending a package-level check,” not “proven server-only.” Before putting it on a production world, test three cases: two modded players using one chest, one modded player with one vanilla player, and two vanilla players. Confirm whether the chest contents remain synchronized and whether a player without the package receives an error, sees a normal chest, or experiences missing interactions.

Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock

This package combines several storage conveniences in one tool. The catalog describes quick stacking, sorting, trashing, and related actions; PC Gamer summarizes its command set as quick stack, restock, store all, and associated actions. For a busy shared base, bundling those operations can reduce repeated trips between personal inventories and storage walls.

Because the package combines multiple interactions, compatibility depends on how each action is exposed to the player. Treat it as a shared-install candidate and verify the current multiplayer requirement before promising that friends can join unmodded. Test chest sorting and restocking with a deliberately small inventory first, then test a full storage room after a backup. If another mod also changes inventory buttons, hotkeys, or chest behavior, disable one package at a time to identify conflicts.

ExtraSlots: useful expansion, not strict server-only

ExtraSlots adds dedicated equipment, food, ammo, miscellaneous, quick, utility, and extra inventory-row capacity. Its package claims support up to:

  • 6 quick slots
  • 3 food slots
  • 3 ammo slots
  • 2 miscellaneous slots
  • 5 utility items
  • 5 extra inventory rows

Those figures are package claims, not independent measurements. More importantly for this article’s criterion, the documentation says a player needs ExtraSlots installed to use the additional inventory interface and slot behavior. That explicit client requirement excludes it from a strict server-side-only list.

When it still makes sense

ExtraSlots can be appropriate for a coordinated, fully modded group that wants more equipment choices without repeatedly rearranging a backpack. Establish a common version for every player, and remove or replace other inventory-management packages before testing. Its documentation warns about incompatibility with other inventory mods; overlapping slot definitions can cause missing items, broken interfaces, or unusable saves.

Protecting inventories during a change

  1. Empty the added slots into ordinary, visible storage before uninstalling or changing versions.
  2. Back up both the character data and the world before the change.
  3. Have every player connect with the same package state before moving items back into expanded slots.
  4. Verify that equipment, food, ammunition, utility items, and quick-slot assignments survive a reconnect.

Valheim Plus: broad overhaul, not a default server-only pick

Valheim Plus is a configurable overhaul rather than a narrowly scoped server utility. PC Gamer describes it as broad and toggleable and discusses Grantapher’s community-sourced version after the original mod stopped publishing updates. That breadth is its appeal: an administrator can tune many systems instead of installing several small packages.

It is also why it should not be the default recommendation for a strict server-only setup. Different features and releases can have different client requirements, and changing many systems at once increases the chance of recipe, progression, building, stamina, or inventory conflicts. If you choose it, define the exact features you need, require a matching client setup where the package calls for one, and test on a copy of the world before enabling the configuration for everyone.

Installation and validation workflow for a dedicated server

The following process avoids the most common mistake: installing a package, seeing the server start, and assuming that every player can use it without a client component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Establish a rollback point

Stop the server and copy the world, character-related server data, configuration files, and current plug-in list to storage outside the live server directory. Name the backup with the date and the Valheim version. A mod that changes objects, inventories, or recipes can affect saved data even when removal appears to restore the vanilla server.

2. Install the loader and package exactly as documented

Most Valheim dedicated-server mod deployments use a loader such as BepInExPack Valheim, but the package’s current instructions control the required files and launch configuration. Do not mix files from a client installation into the server installation, and do not assume that a package marked Server-side needs no client files at all.

3. Start without inviting players

Read the complete startup log. Look for missing dependencies, duplicate plug-in identifiers, failed patch messages, and configuration errors. A clean process exit is not enough evidence that the mod loaded correctly; the log should identify the package and its version.

4. Test with a vanilla client

Use a separate test character or world. Check the exact feature the mod promises, not merely connection success. For a storage mod, open, move, sort, and withdraw items. For a farming mod, place and harvest the added objects. For an administrative mod, perform a harmless command and confirm that normal players do not gain access unintentionally.

5. Test mixed clients

Have one player with the package and one without it connect at the same time. This reveals whether the mod is genuinely server-only, optional-client, or effectively client-required. Record visual differences, missing buttons, rejected actions, desynchronization, and disconnect messages.

6. Promote only after a restore test

Confirm that the backup can be restored before enabling the package on the main world. Keep the old package and configuration available so you can return to the previous state if a Valheim update or mod update changes compatibility.

Compatibility risks and how to troubleshoot them

The catalog says Server-side, but vanilla players cannot use the feature

Recheck the package documentation and the exact feature being tested. A package can run server code while still requiring a client plug-in for menus, hotkeys, placement previews, or custom item displays. Classify it as optional-client or client-required for your group if the vanilla test fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two inventory or storage mods interfere

Disable all but one package that changes slots, chest interfaces, sorting, or hotkeys. Restore the backup if items disappeared from a custom slot. ExtraSlots specifically warns about incompatibility with other inventory-management mods, so it should not be paired casually with another slot overhaul.

The world contains objects from a removed farming mod

Restore the pre-installation backup rather than repeatedly starting and stopping the server with different plug-in sets. World objects and recipes may persist after removal, and a vanilla client may not know how to render or interact with them.

An update changes behavior

Freeze the known-good Valheim and package versions for the group. Read the package change notes, copy the live backup, and repeat the vanilla-client and mixed-client tests after every update. Popularity or download volume does not establish compatibility with your particular server build.

Popularity is not proof of server-only compatibility

Thunderstore catalog figures captured on 15 October 2026 show how widely several packages had been downloaded, but these are volatile catalog counts rather than quality or client-requirement ratings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Package Downloads shown in the catalog Catalog date
BepInExPack Valheim 7.3 million 2026
PlantEverything 2.8 million 2026
EpicLoot 2.3 million 2026
EquipmentAndQuickSlots 1.6 million 2026
ExtraSlots 1.5 million 2026
Server devcommands 1.3 million 2026

A high count can indicate discoverability or longevity; it cannot tell you whether a package supports a vanilla client, whether it is updated for your Valheim release, or whether it conflicts with another mod.

Choosing the right setup

You want friends to join with no preparation

Begin with Server devcommands for administration. Add gameplay packages only after a vanilla-client test proves that the specific feature works. Keep the list short so troubleshooting remains manageable.

Your group accepts a synchronized modpack

PlantEasily, ExtraSlots, and Valheim Plus become more realistic options when every player agrees to install matching versions. Use a written mod list and a backup policy, especially for inventory and world-changing packages.

You mainly need a better shared base

Evaluate MultiUserChest and Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock one at a time. Their storage benefits are easy to demonstrate, but the mixed-client test determines whether they meet your “friends do not need to install the mod” requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are building a decorative or farming-focused world

PlantEverything offers the broader planting palette, while PlantEasily focuses on efficient placement and harvesting. The former is tagged for both server and client use; the latter is cataloged client-side. Choose based on whether the group prioritizes additional plant types or construction workflow, then validate the required client setup before large-scale planting.

Bottom line

For a genuinely server-side-first Valheim server, install and validate Server devcommands before anything else. Treat PlantEverything, MultiUserChest, and Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock as conditional candidates that require package-level multiplayer testing. PlantEasily is client-side in the catalog, ExtraSlots explicitly needs a client for its extra interface, and Valheim Plus is a broad overhaul with variable requirements. The only dependable definition of “friends do not need to install the mod” is a successful test with the exact Valheim version, package version, and vanilla client your server will use.
