RECORDS level settings are the ones you tune in this order: establish the song’s tempo, correct the first-beat offset, set a readable scroll speed, balance music volume against gameplay feedback, and then add complexity in short musical phrases. There is no developer-published universal number for any of those controls, so treat every value as a playtest setting rather than an official default.
The Music Level Editor is currently available in the updated free Steam demo on PC. It lets you import your own music, place notes, obstacles and effects on a timeline, customize the presentation, play the result immediately, and export a finished level as a ZIP file for sharing. The full game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, but its release date remains to be announced.

What the MR. RECORDS editor currently lets you change
Open the editor from the main menu beside the story Play option. The first icon in the record editor lets you create a level from scratch or import a level file. You can then choose between the game’s music and your own track.
| Control or feature | What it affects | How to tune it | What is officially established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tempo | The musical beat used to place and interpret gameplay events | Set it before making dense patterns; verify that alignment remains stable through the section | The editor exposes tempo, but no universal value is published |
| First-beat offset | Where the song’s first beat falls on the editor timeline | Correct a uniformly early or late first note before changing other settings | The editor exposes first-beat offset, but no default is published |
| Scroll speed | How quickly notes and obstacles travel toward the play area | Choose a speed that gives a first-time player time to see and react | Available as a control; no recommended number is published |
| Music volume | The level of the imported or selected track relative to effects and timing feedback | Keep the music clear without masking cues | Available as a control; no default value is published |
| Music source | Whether the level uses game music or an imported track | Select Import Music for a custom song or Use Game Music for an in-game track | Custom music is supported in the PC editor |
| Timeline objects | Notes, obstacles and effects that define the playable pattern | Add them in phrases, play immediately, and increase density only after timing is reliable | The editor is designed for placing these objects on a music timeline |
| Presentation | Colors, animations and backgrounds that communicate section changes and difficulty | Use contrast for meaningful events without obscuring hazards | These visual elements can be customized |
These controls are documented by the MR. RECORDS team and by Wired Productions’ 15 October 2026 announcement. Because the published material does not provide latency benchmarks, pass/fail scores or numeric presets, a value is only “best” after it survives repeated playtests on your intended input method.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Set up a level before adding dense patterns
1. Start with a short, representative section
Create a new record or import a level file, select your music source, and work on a short section that contains the song’s normal beat plus at least one transition you expect to make difficult. A short section makes timing errors obvious and avoids spending time decorating a pattern that will later need to be moved.
2. Select the music source
- Open the record editor from the main menu.
- Choose the first icon to create a level or import a level file.
- Select Import Music for a custom track, or select Use Game Music for a game track.
- When importing, expose the tempo, first-beat offset, scroll speed and music-volume controls before placing a large number of objects.
3. Establish timing before decoration
Set tempo and first-beat offset first. Do not attempt to compensate for a misplaced first beat by moving every note individually; that creates an unnecessary maintenance problem when the offset is corrected later. Once the opening phrase plays in time, add notes and obstacles, then test immediately.
How to tune tempo and first-beat offset
Tempo: make the beat stay aligned
Tempo is the foundation for the editor’s timeline. Choose the song’s tempo, place a simple sequence, and play it from the beginning. Listen and watch through the entire test section rather than judging only the first note.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- If the first note is correctly placed but later notes gradually move early or late, revisit tempo.
- If the timing is consistently early or consistently late by the same amount, leave tempo alone and adjust first-beat offset.
- If the song contains a transition, test on both sides of it; an apparently correct opening can hide a tempo mismatch later.
- Do not add a dense obstacle pattern until a sparse pattern remains aligned through the section.
The editor documentation confirms that tempo is exposed but does not state a universal numerical recommendation. Use the value that matches the particular track and confirm it by playing, not by treating an unverified number as an official preset.

First-beat offset: put beat one in the right place
First-beat offset determines where the song’s first beat lands relative to the timeline. Place an obvious first note on the intended beat and play from the beginning.
- Start playback at the beginning of the test section.
- Observe whether the first note arrives on the musical beat you intended.
- If it is early or late while the rest of the section does not progressively drift, change the first-beat offset.
- Replay from the beginning after each meaningful adjustment.
- Only after the opening beat is stable should you add complicated syncopation, obstacles or effects.
This order matters because changing tempo and offset at the same time makes it difficult to identify which adjustment fixed the problem. The first-beat check is also the fastest way to distinguish a global starting error from a tempo error that accumulates over time.
Choose a scroll speed players can read
Scroll speed controls how much time a player has to recognize an upcoming note or obstacle. The developers document the control but publish no universal numeric recommendation, so the correct value depends on pattern density, visual complexity and the input method you expect players to use.

A practical readability test
- Build a simple phrase with the intended note and obstacle types.
- Play it as a first-time player would, without memorizing the sequence.
- Ask whether an upcoming hazard is visible early enough to identify and react to it.
- Increase or decrease scroll speed, then replay the same phrase.
- Retest the hardest transition, not only the easiest opening.
A faster setting can make a sparse pattern feel energetic but can turn a dense pattern into visual noise. A slower setting can improve recognition while reducing urgency. Treat readability as a design constraint: if a player must already know the pattern to react, lower the speed, simplify the phrase, or give the hazard more visual separation.

Use scroll speed with visual contrast
Colors, animations and backgrounds can all be customized. Reserve strong contrast and major animation changes for sections that need to communicate a transition, a climax or a new hazard. When the background and effects compete with the gameplay objects, the nominal scroll speed is no longer the real readability limit.
Balance music volume with gameplay feedback
Music volume should make the track clear without masking timing feedback or effects. The editor provides a music-volume control but does not publish a default value or an official loudness target.
Set the level in context
- Play with the same output device you expect to use for normal testing.
- Listen for the timing cues and effects while the music is at the selected level.
- Check a quiet phrase and the loudest or busiest phrase; balance that works only in the intro is not sufficient.
- Ask another player to try the section if possible, since a creator who knows the pattern can overlook masked cues.
Do not use volume to hide a synchronization problem. If notes feel late or early, return to tempo and first-beat offset rather than turning the track up or down.
Build patterns in musical phrases
Add notes, obstacles and effects incrementally
The editor places notes, obstacles and effects on a music timeline. Build one phrase, play it immediately, and then continue. This catches a misplaced object while the cause is still visible.

- Lay down the basic notes that express the beat.
- Play the phrase and confirm the first beat and subsequent alignment.
- Add obstacles where they support the musical or gameplay idea.
- Add effects only after the playable objects are readable.
- Replay the phrase and the transition into it.
- Increase density only when the simpler version is reliable.
Make difficulty communicate itself
Difficulty should be legible before it becomes punishing. Use a change in color, animation or background to signal a meaningful section, but do not place a high-contrast animation over a hazard. Patterns that add notes, obstacles and effects simultaneously need extra scrutiny because each layer consumes visual attention.
The editor supports remixing experiences, so you can also create an alternate version of a section rather than forcing every idea into one pattern. Compare the versions using the same timing, readability and audio checks before deciding which one is stronger.
Playtest checklist before you publish
There is no official automated validation checklist or published pass threshold. Use this manual checklist for every finished section:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Beginning: Play from the start and confirm that the first note lands on the intended beat.
- Hardest transition: Start immediately before the most difficult change and verify that the player has enough visual and reaction time.
- Tempo: Check that alignment remains consistent through the section rather than drifting.
- Scroll speed: Confirm that a first-time player can identify each upcoming note or obstacle.
- Controller: Replay at least once with a controller if that is the intended input method; the Steam listing marks a controller as recommended for PC.
- Audio: Verify that music, effects and timing feedback remain distinguishable together.
- Contrast: Check that colors, animations and backgrounds do not obscure playable objects.
- Repeatability: Play the section again after making a change, because a fix in one phrase can disturb the transition into the next.
Diagnose common timing and readability problems
| Symptom | Likely setting or design issue | What to change first |
|---|---|---|
| The first note is early or late, but later notes stay in the same relationship | First-beat placement is wrong | Adjust first-beat offset; do not move every note individually |
| The opening is correct, but notes progressively drift | Tempo does not match the track or section | Revisit tempo, then replay the entire section |
| A pattern is technically playable but unreadable on first attempt | Scroll speed is too fast, density is too high, or contrast is weak | Lower scroll speed or simplify the phrase before adding more effects |
| Timing cues disappear during busy passages | Music volume or visual effects mask feedback | Reduce music volume and remove competing animation or background contrast |
| A transition works when started at the beginning but fails when approached normally | The lead-in does not provide enough information or reaction time | Test from the preceding phrase and adjust scroll speed, spacing or the transition’s visual signal |
| The level feels different on controller | The intended input method was not included in testing | Replay with the target controller and retune the affected phrase |
Compare two builds without an official score

| Axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Beat alignment | Does the first beat land correctly, and does timing remain stable? | Tempo and offset used; result of beginning and transition tests |
| Readability | Can a first-time player see and interpret hazards? | Scroll speed, density and visual-contrast observations |
| Challenge density | Do notes and obstacles add meaningful challenge without overwhelming the phrase? | Where density rises and whether the transition remains playable |
| Audio balance | Can players hear the track and gameplay feedback together? | Music-volume setting and any masked cues |
| Sharing readiness | Can the level be exported and identified clearly by another player? | Successful ZIP export and useful level metadata |
This framework helps you choose a better build without implying that any unpublished number is an official target.
Export and share a finished level
Export the level as a ZIP file
- Open the completed record in the editor.
- Scroll to Share.
- Select the export option and save the resulting ZIP file.
- Keep the ZIP intact when sending it to another player.
- Include clear information about the level and music so recipients know what they are opening and which version they received.
The official FAQ describes this ZIP-based workflow for sending custom levels to other players. It is a file-sharing process in the current demo.
Use the official community channel
Wired Productions directs creators to the official MR. RECORDS Discord, where custom levels can be discovered, played and discussed. Share the exported ZIP there according to the community’s current rules and provide enough context for players to understand the level’s intended input method and difficulty.
The researched official material does not document a Steam Workshop upload button for MR. RECORDS. Do not describe Workshop publishing as a confirmed feature; the documented route is ZIP export and community sharing.
