The most reliable shared-progression setup is simple: use one Activision account as your identity hub, sign in to that same account in Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, and link every Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account you use to it. Progression is attached to the Activision account, not kept separately on each console or PC account. If a platform account is linked to a different Activision account, its Modern Warfare 4 progress will not carry into Warzone.
The account arrangement that keeps progression together
Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone use an Activision account to connect progression across supported platforms. Activision describes the rule this way: “Because game progression in crossplay-enabled games is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.” The practical consequence is that the Activision account is the permanent identity in your setup; Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Battle.net, and Nintendo accounts are access points linked to that identity.

Choose the Activision account that already contains the progression, purchases, or profile history you intend to keep. Then attach each platform account to that same Activision account. Creating a second Activision account for a new console or PC can split your history, and moving a platform account later does not merge the two progression records.

What this arrangement does not do
- It does not merge two Activision accounts.
- It does not move progress from one Activision account into another when you relink a console or PC account.
- It does not make every purchase or entitlement automatically platform-neutral; platform-specific terms still apply.
- It does not eliminate the need to verify which Activision identity is signed in before you start playing.
Set up the correct account before Modern Warfare 4 launches
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for global launch on October 23, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC through Battle.net, Xbox on PC, and Steam. Switch 2 availability was announced in the same launch communication. Warzone, the Battle Pass, BlackCell, and Call of Duty Points are described as part of the connected launch ecosystem. Because the launch date is still ahead, this is the safest time to audit your account links rather than trying to repair a split profile after earning new levels or items.

- Identify the account with the history you want. Use the Activision account currently associated with your established Warzone or Call of Duty progression. If you have more than one email address, check each account rather than assuming the newest account is the correct one.
- Sign in to that Activision account before opening the games. Do not allow a new-platform registration flow to create a second identity simply because the console or PC is new.
- Link every platform account you plan to use. Activision lists Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Blizzard, and Nintendo among supported account links. Link the account you actually play on, not a spare profile belonging to another household member.
- Open Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone and inspect the in-game account identity. The registration or account screen presented inside each game is the authoritative check that the same Activision identity is active. Perform this check before earning progress on a new platform.
- Record the identity you verified. Keep the Activision sign-in email and platform gamertag or ID together in your own records. This avoids guessing later when a launcher remembers a different account.
The order matters. Linking first and playing second prevents a new platform from becoming the place where a separate progression history begins.
Recommended settings and account choices
There is no separate “share progression” switch to enable. The best settings are account and linkage choices that keep one identity in control.
| Choice | Recommended setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Activision identity | Use the existing account that holds the progression you want to preserve. | Progression is stored on this account and follows its linked platforms. |
| Platform links | Link each Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account you use to that one Activision account. | A platform linked elsewhere will not see the expected Modern Warfare 4 progression in Warzone. |
| New-platform registration | Verify the signed-in Activision identity in the game before entering a match or completing a challenge. | The in-game registration flow confirms which identity is receiving new progress. |
| Relinking | Do not unlink and relink as a first troubleshooting step. | Moving a platform account does not merge progression and can make the expected history unavailable on that platform. |
| Game access | Decide whether you need the full Modern Warfare 4 game or only the Warzone experience before installing or purchasing. | The supported titles and access requirements are separate decisions from account synchronization. |
| Purchases and currency | Check the platform and regional terms for each purchase before paying. | Current platform-specific currency restrictions and entitlement behavior are not established by the launch information. |
How to link a second console or PC without losing your history
When moving from one console to another
- Leave the original platform account attached to the Activision account that contains your progression.
- On the new console, start the sign-in or registration flow for Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone.
- Choose the option to sign in with the existing Activision account rather than creating a new one.
- Link the new Xbox or PlayStation account to that same Activision identity.
- Launch both games and verify the displayed Activision account before playing.
Your progress should then be available on the new linked platform because the progression record follows the Activision account. The console itself is not the storage location for the shared progression.

- Determine whether you are launching through Battle.net, Xbox on PC, or Steam.
- Use the Activision account that already contains your Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone history.
- During the first-run account flow, link the correct PC platform account to that Activision identity.
- Close and reopen the game if the account screen still shows an unexpected identity.
- Confirm the account again in both Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone before earning new levels, weapon progress, or challenges.
Changing the PC launcher does not by itself create a new progression record; the decisive factor is which Activision account the launcher account is linked to.

What carries into Warzone
Activision says Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression beginning with Season 1. That makes the account check especially important at launch: the Modern Warfare 4 content you earn should be associated with the Activision identity you use in Warzone.
A September 24, 2026 Warzone update states that Operators and weapons from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 remain available in Warzone Season 1. The same statement includes skins and blueprints earned or purchased for those titles. Warzone also adds a filter that displays Modern Warfare 4 Operators. These details describe continued availability inside Warzone; they do not mean that two separate Activision accounts can be combined.
| Content or record | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 progression | Stored on the Activision account and usable on the platforms linked to that account. |
| Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 Operators and weapons | Activision says they remain available in Warzone Season 1, including associated skins and blueprints earned or purchased for those games. |
| Modern Warfare 4 Operators in Warzone | A Season 1 filter is provided to display them. |
| Platform-specific entitlements | Check the applicable platform and regional terms; the available information does not establish a universal transfer rule for every purchase. |
Platform comparison for a shared setup
All platform decisions should be made against the same four questions: is the platform account linked to the right Activision account, is Modern Warfare 4 officially supported there, do you need the full game or only Warzone, and could a purchase be platform-specific?
| Platform or route | Modern Warfare 4 support identified for launch | Account action | Access question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes; listed for the October 23, 2026 global launch. | Link the Xbox account to the Activision account containing your progression. | Decide whether your intended activity requires the full Modern Warfare 4 game or only Warzone. |
| PlayStation 5 | Yes; listed for the October 23, 2026 global launch. | Link the PlayStation account to the same Activision account used elsewhere. | Confirm the edition and region before purchase; current pricing is not established here. |
| PC through Battle.net | Yes; listed for the October 23, 2026 global launch. | Use the Battle.net account linked to your established Activision identity. | Check which installed product supplies the modes you intend to play. |
| Xbox on PC | Included in the listed PC launch routes. | Verify the Xbox/Microsoft identity and Activision identity are the intended pair. | Review access and entitlement terms for your region. |
| Steam | Yes; listed for the October 23, 2026 global launch. | Link the Steam account to the same Activision account, not a new one. | Check the edition and any platform-specific purchase conditions. |
| Switch 2 | Availability was announced with the launch communication. | Link the Nintendo account to the Activision account holding your progress. | Confirm the local edition and access terms before relying on this route. |
The table establishes launch support and the identity workflow, not retailer inventory, regional pricing, or a guarantee that every paid entitlement appears identically on every platform.

What happens if you unlink an account
Unlinking is not a progress-transfer tool. If your PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, or Nintendo account is moved from the Activision account where your progress was earned to another Activision account, the progress does not merge into the destination account. You may also find that the expected progression is no longer available when you return to the platform.
Before changing a link
- Write down the Activision account currently shown in the game.
- Check which account contains the progression you intend to preserve.
- Verify the platform ID you are about to move.
- Assume that separate histories will remain separate; do not proceed expecting a merge.
- Use relinking only when you have identified an account-association error and understand that it can leave progress unavailable on the destination identity.
If you already linked the platform to the wrong account
- Stop playing on that platform so you do not create additional progress on the wrong identity.
- Open the in-game account or registration screen and record the Activision identity currently displayed.
- Compare it with the account that contains your established history.
- Do not create another account to “test” the problem.
- Correct the association only after deciding which single Activision account should remain the hub.
- After any permitted account change, reopen both games and verify the displayed identity before resuming play.
The important distinction is between correcting a mistaken link and trying to combine two histories. The first may restore access to the expected account; the second is not supported by the progression model described by Activision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting when progress is missing
The new platform starts with an empty profile
First suspect an account mismatch, not deleted progression. Exit the game, return to the registration or account screen, and check whether the Activision account is the one that contains your existing history. Then check the platform account link. A platform connected to a different Activision account will not carry over the expected progress.
Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone show different identities
Do not earn more progress until both games show the same Activision identity. Sign out through the available in-game account flow, restart the application, and repeat the identity check. The goal is not to create a new profile in either game; it is to make both use the established account.

A launcher remembers the wrong platform account
Close the game and confirm which Battle.net, Xbox on PC, or Steam account is active before relaunching. A remembered launcher login can point to a different linked platform account even when you expected the Activision account to be the same. Verify the pair in the game rather than relying only on the launcher name.
Progress appears on one platform but not another
Compare the Activision identity and the linked platform account on both devices. If one platform was linked to a different Activision account, the records will remain separate. Relinking does not merge them, so identify the correct hub before making any change.
A purchase is not visible everywhere
Do not assume that an item, currency balance, or entitlement is universal merely because progression is shared. Platform and regional conditions can affect purchases, and current currency restrictions are not established here. Check the purchase terms for the platform and edition involved before buying again.

Run this short check whenever you install the game on a new platform, after a major account change, and at the start of Season 1:
- Open the game’s account or registration screen.
- Read the Activision identity displayed there.
- Confirm that it is the account holding your established progression.
- Confirm that the current Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account is linked to that same identity.
- Open Warzone and check that your expected operators, weapons, skins, blueprints, and Modern Warfare 4 operator filter are present where applicable.
- Only then begin a match, challenge, or purchase.
This routine catches the most expensive mistake—playing for hours on a newly created or incorrectly linked profile—before the mismatch grows.
Deciding between the full game and Warzone
Account synchronization is independent of which product you install. Use the full Modern Warfare 4 release when you need the content included with that paid game; use the Warzone installation when your activity is limited to Warzone. In either case, sign in with the same Activision account and link the platform account before playing.
Do not use an edition or retailer listing as a substitute for account verification. The October 23 launch date and supported platforms are established, but current retailer stock, regional editions, and prices are not. Check those details for your country and platform at the time of purchase.
Bottom line
Keep one Activision account at the center of your setup. Link every platform you use to that account, verify the identity inside both Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone before earning progress, and treat unlinking as a potentially disruptive account correction—not a way to merge histories. With that arrangement, the progression Activision stores on the account can follow you across supported linked platforms as Modern Warfare 4 content enters Warzone Season 1.
