This is a cautious starting profile—not a tested performance guarantee. Check it in a demanding fight, then change one setting at a time.
Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Start here | How to tune it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×800 | Try 1280×720 if it makes interface scaling or readability more comfortable. [Steam store listing; July 2026 settings guide] |
| Frame-rate cap | 30 FPS | Use this conservative target first, then assess frame pacing in a busy encounter. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Renderer | Vulkan | Keep the renderer fixed while tuning. Try the alternative only if you encounter repeatable crashes or serious visual faults. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Graphics preset | Low | Restore individual options only after combat performance is acceptable. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Upscaling | Quality | Move to Balanced only if a repeatable demanding scene cannot hold your chosen target. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Dynamic resolution | On, if available | Turn it off if changing sharpness bothers you more than occasional frame-rate dips. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Textures | Medium | This is a selective step up from Low; lower them if you see memory-related hitching or instability. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Shadows, lighting, global illumination, water and effects | Low | Raise these only after checking a demanding scene consistently. [July 2026 settings guide] |
| Engine multithreading | Leave enabled | There is conflicting unofficial advice about disabling it on Deck; avoid a universal config-file override. [July 2026 settings guide; May 2026 guide] |
These are starting choices rather than a claim that every option label or menu location is identical across builds. The game is in Early Access, and settings can move or change.
How to tune performance without guessing
- Update and restart. Install available SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck. Pause downloads while testing so background activity does not muddy the comparison. [July 2026 settings guide]
- Set one target. Begin with the 30 FPS cap and keep it fixed through the first tuning pass. [July 2026 settings guide]
- Choose a repeatable test. Use the same demanding fight or crowded area each time; a menu or quiet zone will not reveal how the settings behave under load. [July 2026 settings guide]
- Adjust upscaling first. Start at Quality and move to Balanced only if the same busy scene repeatedly falls short of your target. [July 2026 settings guide]
- Restore visuals individually. Raise one option—such as textures or a visual effect—then replay the same encounter before making another change. This makes it easier to identify the cost of each adjustment. [July 2026 settings guide]
Compare frame pacing, image clarity, any shifting sharpness, and HUD readability together. If a change improves one measure but makes another distracting, revert it rather than chasing a number in isolation.
Should you aim for 45 FPS?
A 45 FPS cap is an optional experiment, not the default recommendation. An unofficial May 2026 guide suggests 1280×800 output, 75% render scaling, Vulkan, low global illumination and shadows, a 512 cache pool, and a 45 FPS cap. That guide reports a 52 FPS average and 41 FPS 1% low for its configuration, but its reported figures are not independently validated here and should not be treated as a promise. If you want to try it, compare the 45 FPS setup against the 30 FPS baseline in the same demanding encounter. Keep it only if the smoother motion is worth the extra loss in image detail or clarity and the result feels consistent on your Deck. Avoid changing several graphics options at once, and do not assume another player’s results will transfer to your game build or compatibility setup.
SteamOS, Proton and compatibility troubleshooting
Steam lists Path of Exile 2 for Windows, with DirectX 12 among its published PC requirements; those requirements do not establish a Steam Deck performance guarantee. [Steam store listing]

If you have a repeatable launch, crash, or visual problem, Steam Support’s general troubleshooting advice is to check for system updates, restart, try the latest Proton compatibility tool when appropriate, and lower graphics settings. Begin with the default compatibility selection; use the game’s Steam compatibility controls only to diagnose a specific recurring issue. [Steam Support]
Avoid copying old launch flags or configuration-file tweaks as routine fixes. Advice to change a config can be tied to a particular game version, and the unofficial guides disagree on engine multithreading. If an option or file instruction does not match the current build, do not force it.

Storage, verification and what performance claims mean
Steam’s listing displayed a requirement for 100 GB of available storage when accessed on October 4, 2026. Leave additional room for SteamOS data and updates; a compatible microSD card can add capacity, but it will not raise FPS or improve image quality. [Steam store listing]
The same listing, accessed October 4, 2026, said the developers planned for Path of Exile 2 to leave Early Access on December 11, 2026 PST. Release status and game builds can change, so check the live listing for current information. [Steam store listing; Steam announcement]

No current, independently reproducible Steam Deck benchmark or battery-runtime figure is established by the available sources. A 2024 Windows Central account described a different historical setup—DirectX 12, 1280×800, FSR Quality, medium textures, low shadows, and a 38 FPS target—and noted that text remained small. Those observations predate the 2026 guides; they are not current settings advice or evidence of today’s Steam Deck verification badge. [Windows Central, 2024]
Check the current Steam store badge directly before relying on a compatibility status. The published Windows PC requirements and anecdotal settings guides do not, by themselves, prove a particular Deck experience.
