What are the best settings for playing P.T. on PC?
Use the Original (PS4) preset and your monitor’s native resolution first. That gives you the port’s documented original-behavior visual baseline without making unverified claims about performance or fidelity from other settings. Choose a display mode for convenience, then adjust only if you see a problem or prefer a different presentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Resolution: Start at the display’s native resolution.
- Graphics: Choose Original (PS4).
- Display mode: Use borderless for convenient desktop switching, exclusive fullscreen if it suits your system better, or windowed for a smaller play area.
- V-sync: Leave the current setting as it is initially; change it only to compare tearing or input feel on your own setup.
- Optional effects: Leave ray-traced effects and other enhancements off initially. If performance is poor, reduce resolution or select a lower preset before adding demanding effects.
The README documents Low, Medium, Original, High, Ultra and Custom presets, but the available information does not include comparative benchmarks or a universally best preset for particular hardware. Treat your own image-quality and smoothness preferences as the deciding factors.

Think of the starting setup as a reference point, not a magic combination. The project lists several ways to change the image, but it does not publish tested frame rates or side-by-side comparisons showing what a particular PC should achieve. If the game looks and feels right at native resolution and Original, there is no need to turn on more options just because they are available.
What resolution should I use?
Start with the native resolution of the display you are playing on. It is a straightforward baseline for judging the image without introducing an unnecessary resolution change. The port exposes a selectable render resolution; borderless mode can render at a selected size separate from the desktop window, while exclusive fullscreen lists supported display modes.
If the game does not feel smooth, try lowering the render resolution and compare. A lower render resolution may trade image detail for a lighter graphics workload, but the sources do not establish how much performance any particular change gains on a given PC. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Resolution and display mode are related choices, but they are not the same setting. In borderless mode, the render size can be selected separately from the desktop window size. Exclusive fullscreen presents the supported display modes listed by the port. That gives you a way to compare available modes without assuming that one combination is automatically best for every monitor.
Choose a display mode by how you use your PC
| Mode | When to choose it | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Borderless | When you want convenient switching between the game and desktop. | The port offers borderless mode and lets you select a render size separate from the desktop window. |
| Exclusive fullscreen | When you prefer fullscreen and want to select from the display modes the game lists. | The port lists supported display modes for exclusive fullscreen. No general performance advantage is established. |
| Windowed | When you want a smaller play area or prefer to keep other desktop content visible. | Windowed mode is supported. No comparative performance result is established. |
These choices are about usability, not a documented ranking. If one mode behaves badly on your setup, try another before changing several graphics options at once. A useful comparison is simple: keep the resolution, preset and input the same, change only the display mode, and see which one behaves more comfortably on your system.
Which graphics preset and effects should you choose?
The presets give you a practical way to set a baseline. Original (PS4) is the appropriate first choice if your priority is the port’s documented original-behavior baseline. If you need to trade image quality for performance, try a lower preset. High, Ultra and Custom are available for further adjustment, but their names alone do not establish how they will perform on your hardware.
| Preset | Useful starting point for | Evidence-based caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Trying a less demanding preset if performance is poor. | No frame-rate gain or visual comparison is established. |
| Medium | Trying an intermediate option after Low or Original. | No benchmark or exact quality difference is established. |
| Original (PS4) | Starting with the documented original-behavior baseline. | This is a recommended starting point, not a claim of measured equivalence on every PC. |
| High or Ultra | Exploring higher preset options after establishing a stable baseline. | No performance target or universal image-quality advantage is established. |
| Custom | Adjusting individual graphics controls rather than relying on a preset. | Change one option at a time and compare on your own system. |
The README lists optional ray-traced shadows, ambient occlusion and floor reflections, along with image controls such as shadow sizes, filtering, film grain, motion blur, depth of field, lens effects and enhanced textures. Availability depends on support: unsupported settings appear grayed out. Keep optional effects off at first; enable them selectively if you want to compare their appearance and performance.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Those controls do not all answer the same question. Shadow size and filtering change image treatment; film grain, motion blur, depth of field and lens effects change presentation; enhanced textures and the optional ray-traced effects offer further visual adjustments. Rather than treating a longer list of effects as an automatic upgrade, decide whether you actually prefer the result. The README documents that the settings exist, not that any one produces a universally better version of the game.
Upscaling choices listed by the project include AMD FSR 3.1, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and Intel XeSS. The README says FSR and XeSS work on recent GPUs on Windows, and that DLSS requires an RTX card. Ray-traced effects also have additional hardware requirements. These are options, not guaranteed improvements: the available information does not establish which setting looks or runs best for a particular computer. The README also lists frame generation for specified GPU families, but does not identify those families in the information summarized here.
Use those compatibility notes before troubleshooting a missing control. DLSS is specifically tied to an RTX card, and the README limits its FSR and XeSS note to recent GPUs on Windows. Ray-traced options have extra hardware requirements, and unsupported controls may simply be grayed out. A disabled option is not evidence that the base game cannot run, nor a reason to change unrelated settings.
How should you set V-sync?
The port offers a V-sync on/off toggle, but the available documentation does not support a universal recommendation or establish a default setting. Start with whatever value is currently selected. If you see tearing, try the other setting; if the game feels less responsive, compare input feel with the alternate setting. Keep the option that works better on your display and system.

If you also change resolution, preset and display mode at the same time, it becomes harder to identify which adjustment affected the result. There is no sourced claim that turning V-sync on or off is always smoother or more responsive for this port.
Does P.T. on PC support a controller?
Yes. The current port’s README says any gamepad works as a PS4 pad, and it documents PlayStation, Xbox and Switch button-prompt families. You can also play with mouse and keyboard. Button prompts follow whichever input you used last, so a prompt changing after you touch the keyboard or controller is expected behavior.
The project documents original vibration by default and enhanced feedback options. However, physical controller output still needs hardware validation; the documentation does not establish that every model or every controller feature has been independently tested. If a gamepad is not behaving as expected, try another input method and check the project’s current README for release-specific notes rather than assuming that a particular controller model is confirmed.

Because prompts track the last input, seeing a different button family after pressing a keyboard key does not necessarily mean the gamepad has disconnected. Likewise, the available documentation supports gamepad use in general but does not name a controller model that has been validated here. If you are choosing a controller specifically for this port, treat the listed input support as a general capability rather than a recommendation for a brand or model.

Choosing between a gamepad and mouse and keyboard
There is no documented performance or gameplay advantage for one input method. Use the input you find more comfortable, and remember that the port’s prompt family follows the last input used. A microphone is not mandatory: the README says one voice-input section can instead be handled with a configurable keyboard key.
A USB microphone is therefore an optional way to use voice input, not a prerequisite for playing. If you do not want to use a microphone, use the configurable keyboard key documented by the project. The documentation does not establish that a particular microphone is required or recommend a specific product.
Check compatibility before changing settings
The current project README lists Windows 10/11 x64, Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer, and macOS 14 or newer as supported environments, subject to platform and GPU qualifications. The GPU and driver must support Vulkan 1.3; on macOS, the port uses MoltenVK. Optional features can have stricter requirements than the game itself.
- Check that your operating system and architecture match the listed support requirements.
- Check Vulkan 1.3 support in your GPU and driver. The macOS path uses MoltenVK.
- Do not treat a grayed-out option as a setting you need to fix: the README says options are grayed out when unsupported.
- For DLSS, the README specifies an RTX card; ray-traced effects have additional hardware requirements.
- For FSR or XeSS, note the README’s qualification that they work on recent GPUs on Windows.
Requirements and release capabilities may change. The README says release 1.0.1 contains setup downloads, while 1.0.2 source-tree changes and macOS packages are not yet published release downloads. Verify the current release page and README before following setup instructions or assuming a package is available.
Separate the minimum compatibility check from optional graphics features. Vulkan 1.3 support in the GPU and driver is a stated requirement, while ray tracing and DLSS have additional qualifications. A PC that does not expose a particular enhancement may still meet the project’s broader compatibility requirements. Checking the current release notes first can also prevent a common setup mistake: assuming a source-tree change is already available as a downloadable release package.
Understand which P.T. project you are installing
P.T. was the 2014 PS4 playable teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills project. The current PC port is an unofficial native project by developer Lorean Xavier—not an official Konami PC release, an emulator or a remake in another engine. Its README describes C++ game logic and a Vulkan renderer that read game data from the player’s own PS4 copy; the repository and installer do not include those game assets. Do not mistake an installer for a bundled copy of the game.

This distinction matters before installation: the port is software, not a purchasable PC copy of P.T., and it relies on the player’s own game data. The project’s repository and installer do not supply those assets. The available project information does not establish a price for the port or verify a specific controller or microphone purchase, so do not assume that buying a PC download or accessory will provide the required game files.
In PC Gamer’s 8 October 2026 report, developer Lorean Xavier described the aim as: “I wanted to make the version of P.T. that my younger self always wished existed.” That explains the project’s motivation, but it does not make the port an official Konami release or change its requirement for user-provided game files.
A separate historical project, Unreal PT, was a fan remake built in Unreal Engine. GameSpot’s January 2019 report described mouse and keyboard, PS4 and Xbox One controller support, and VR motion controllers for that remake, as well as a changed ending. Those details do not establish the capabilities or availability of the current native port, so they should not be used to configure it.

- Confirm compatibility: Check the current README for your operating system, GPU/driver requirements and the release package you intend to use.
- Establish the baseline: Set render resolution to your display’s native resolution and select Original (PS4).
- Pick a display mode: Start with borderless for desktop switching, or choose exclusive fullscreen or windowed if those better fit your setup.
- Try your preferred input: Connect a gamepad or use mouse and keyboard. Expect prompts to follow the input used most recently.
- Play before adding effects: Leave optional effects off until you know whether you want them and the base setup is behaving well.
- Adjust one setting at a time: If you see a problem, test the most relevant change—such as a lower resolution for performance, another display mode for compatibility, or the other V-sync setting for tearing or input feel.
This sequence is a way to compare settings on your own hardware, not a claim that a specific configuration has been benchmarked. It also gives you a useful troubleshooting order: verify the release and compatibility first, establish a known image baseline next, then isolate display, graphics or input changes instead of changing everything at once.
How to compare settings without guessing
Use four questions to assess a configuration: does the image remain close to the Original (PS4) baseline you want; does it feel smooth enough on your PC; is the display mode convenient; and do you prefer a gamepad or mouse and keyboard? These are the documented comparison axes for the port. No supplied performance test ranks particular GPUs, resolutions, presets or controller models, so frame-rate promises and hardware rankings would be misleading.
For a useful comparison, begin from the same baseline each time and change one variable. If you lower resolution, leave the preset and display mode alone while judging the change. If you want to compare presets, restore the baseline resolution and keep the same display mode. For V-sync, compare the two toggle positions without changing graphics settings in between. This will not produce a formal benchmark, but it will make your own observations easier to interpret.
Record what you changed if you are testing several options. For example, note whether a problem was tearing, an image-quality preference, or a feeling of sluggish input; then test the setting most directly related to that observation. The point is not to chase a maximum number of enhancements. It is to find a comfortable, supported configuration without mistaking an individual preference for a universal recommendation.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why do the controller prompts change when I use the keyboard?
The port’s prompts follow whichever input was used last. A switch between keyboard and gamepad prompt families is expected when you alternate inputs.
Do I need a microphone to play?
No. The README says a microphone is used for one voice-input section, but a configurable keyboard key can substitute.
Is the PC port an official Konami release, and does it include P.T.?
No. It is an unofficial native PC project, not an official Konami release, emulator or Unreal Engine remake. The project reads game data from the player’s own PS4 copy; its repository and installer do not include those assets.
What are the PC requirements?
The README lists Windows 10/11 x64, Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer, and macOS 14 or newer, subject to platform and GPU qualifications. A GPU and driver supporting Vulkan 1.3 are required; macOS uses MoltenVK. Check the current README and release page because details can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why are some graphics options grayed out?
The README says options are grayed out when unsupported. Some features have additional hardware requirements: DLSS requires an RTX card, ray-traced effects have extra requirements, and the README describes FSR and XeSS support on recent GPUs on Windows.
Can I use Unreal PT settings or VR controller advice for this port?
No. Unreal PT was a separate historical fan remake. GameSpot’s January 2019 report described VR motion-controller support and other input details for that remake, which do not establish features or settings for the current native PC port.
The Bottom Line
Start the current unofficial port at native resolution with the Original (PS4) preset, then choose a display mode and input method that suit you. Leave enhancements off until you have a reason to compare them, and make changes one at a time. Check the current README for compatibility and release details, and remember that the port requires game data from your own PS4 copy.
