Remap attack, jump, dodge and guard so they sit on buttons you can reach without stretching, disable camera shake and hit flash if they cause fatigue, and enable character outlines when the action blends into the background. Use handheld, tabletop or TV mode according to your eyesight and posture, then install the latest patch before a long completion run.
Those choices are not a developer-prescribed preset. They are a practical comfort baseline built from the four documented difficulty options, the game’s full control remapping, and the visual settings added in SEGA’s April 2026 update.

Quick comfort setup
Use this as a first-pass configuration, then change one setting at a time when you discover a specific source of strain.
| Area | Starting choice | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | Apprentice or Novice | Reduces the pressure of rapid combat while preserving the game’s platforming and exploration. |
| Custom tuning | Lower enemy damage before lowering attack frequency | Lets you keep the normal rhythm while making mistakes less costly. Lower attack frequency as well if incoming attacks are stressful to track. |
| Controls | Remap attack, jump, dodge and guard to nearby, reachable buttons | Reduces thumb travel and repeated stretching during side-scrolling fights. |
| Camera shake | Off if motion is tiring | Removes a source of screen movement without changing the core rules. |
| Hit flash | Off if flashes are uncomfortable | Limits bright impact flashes during repeated attacks. |
| Hit stop | Adjust to taste | Changes the brief pause on impact; a shorter or disabled effect can make the action feel less interrupted. |
| Character outlines | On when characters merge with scenery | Improves separation between Joe, enemies and busy backgrounds. |
| Display mode | Handheld for sharp portable detail; tabletop or TV for larger text and a less cramped posture | Switch 2 supports all three modes, so you can change the physical setup without changing the game. |
| Map and tutorials | Use the enlarged map and review previously seen tutorials | Reduces memory and navigation demands during a long session. |

What you are configuring
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a hand-drawn 2D action platformer starring Joe Musashi. Nintendo’s 2026 listing describes katana and kunai combat, Ninjutsu and Ninpo abilities, combo attacks, Amulets, Ningi tools, hidden paths and more than a dozen stages. TechRadar characterizes the moment-to-moment game as fast side-scrolling combat mixed with light exploration, platforming and puzzle-solving.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Switch 2 listing identifies TV, tabletop and handheld play, single-system play and a 12 GB game file size. Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition has higher resolution in handheld mode. That extra sharpness can improve edge and text readability, but a sharper portable image does not automatically solve hand or eye fatigue; distance, lighting and posture still determine whether handheld is the right choice for you.
Choose difficulty by the kind of pressure you feel
SEGA’s manual documents four choices: Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice and Custom. The names are the stable part of the menu; the best option depends on whether your problem is punishment, speed or simply having to repeat a section while tired.
| Mode | Best fit | Comfort trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shinobi | Players who want the highest-pressure standard challenge | More demanding reactions and mistakes that may be tiring in long sessions. |
| Apprentice | A first run for players who know action games but want breathing room | Keeps more of the standard pace while easing the learning curve. |
| Novice | Players prioritizing a gentler, less stressful run | Lower pressure can make combat feel less urgent. |
| Custom | Anyone whose comfort needs do not match a single preset | Requires a little tuning, but lets you target the exact source of difficulty. |
Start with Apprentice or Novice
For most new players, begin on Apprentice. Move to Novice when rapid attacks, repeated deaths or the need to replay checkpoints is making your hands tense. TechRadar found the game generally forgiving on normal difficulty, with unlimited lives and generous checkpoints; that means you can also test a higher setting without risking a permanently lost campaign. The practical test is whether you can keep your grip relaxed and read the next threat, not whether a preset has a particular label.

TechRadar reports that Custom difficulty can vary enemy damage and attack frequency. Treat those as separate controls:

- Lower enemy damage first when a mistake costs too much health but the normal rhythm feels enjoyable.
- Lower attack frequency when several threats arriving at once create visual or reaction overload.
- Change one variable, play a short section, and then decide whether another adjustment is needed. This preserves your ability to identify what actually helped.
A lower-damage, normal-frequency setup suits players who want to practise parries, dodges or platforming without being reset by one error. A lower-frequency setup suits players who can handle individual hits but need more time to identify which attack is coming. If both kinds of pressure are tiring, lower both; Custom exists to avoid forcing a single compromise.
Remap controls for reach, not for theoretical speed
TechRadar reports full control remapping. The useful goal is not to copy another player’s layout. It is to put actions you repeat together, keep your thumb close to the stick or directional control, and remove any motion that causes pain or a grip change.
Prioritize the high-frequency actions
Begin with attack, jump, dodge and guard. These are the actions most likely to be used in rapid alternation, so a layout that demands a long reach can become tiring before a difficult stage is finished. Place each on a face button or shoulder button that you can press without shifting the console or controller in your hand. Then place less frequent actions, such as Ninjutsu, Ninpo or a tool selection, on the remaining reachable inputs.

- Write down the actions you press repeatedly in a typical fight: attack, jump, dodge, guard and any ability you use as a defensive response.
- Assign those actions to buttons that are easy to reach from your normal grip. Avoid a layout that makes two actions you use together share an awkward stretch.
- Play one ordinary stage section rather than changing every action at once during a boss fight.
- If a button causes a missed input, a grip shift or thumb discomfort, move that action and test again.
- Keep the same logical layout in handheld mode and on a paired controller. Consistency removes a second learning task when you change posture.
Keep a written or mental mapping
Because the game combines combat, platforming and puzzle-solving, a layout that is perfect for attacks can still make a jump or dodge feel unfamiliar. Spend a few minutes in a safe area repeating the attack-to-jump and dodge-to-guard transitions you use most. The purpose is to make the control path automatic before a crowded encounter, not to chase a benchmark for button speed.

Use the April 2026 visual options to remove specific discomfort
SEGA’s April 2026 update added configuration for hit stop, hit flash, camera shake and character outlines. These controls address different visual problems, so change the one that matches your symptom rather than turning everything off by default.
| Symptom | Setting to try | Expected change |
|---|---|---|
| The whole image moves during impacts or heavy attacks | Disable camera shake | Impact feedback remains through the action and sound while the view stays steadier. |
| Bright flashes feel tiring or distracting | Disable hit flash | Removes the repeated flash effect associated with hits. |
| Combat feels stuttered or each hit breaks concentration | Reduce or disable hit stop | Shortens the impact pause and makes the animation flow more continuously. |
| Joe or enemies disappear into detailed backgrounds | Enable character outlines | Adds a clearer silhouette so targets are easier to identify. |
When to keep effects enabled
Hit stop and hit flash can communicate that an attack connected, while camera shake can make a powerful move feel distinct. If those effects do not bother you, leaving them on may make combat feedback clearer. Comfort is not the same as removing all feedback; it is choosing the amount you can process without squinting, losing your place or tensing your hands.
Change visual settings in a controlled order
- Turn off camera shake if movement itself is uncomfortable.
- Turn off hit flash if bright, repeated impacts are the problem.
- Adjust hit stop if the brief pauses make the game feel jerky or interrupt your visual tracking.
- Turn on character outlines when the issue is target separation rather than motion.
- Revisit the combination after a full stage, because an option that feels fine in a quiet area may matter more during a crowded encounter.
Choose the Switch 2 mode that fits your eyes and posture
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld support. The Switch 2 version has higher resolution in handheld mode, which can make small details and text appear sharper on the built-in screen. Handheld is useful when you want to move closer or change rooms, but holding the system for a long session can load your wrists and neck.

- Use it when the sharper portable presentation is easy for you to read at a comfortable distance.
- Support your forearms rather than suspending the console in mid-air.
- If your thumbs or neck become tense, do not compensate by gripping harder; move to tabletop or TV mode.
Tabletop
- Choose tabletop when you want the Switch 2 screen but need both hands and forearms supported.
- Place the system high enough that you are not bending your neck for every stage.
- A separate controller can reduce the need to hold the console, but keep the same action logic you established in handheld mode.
TV
- Use TV mode when a larger image makes enemies, map details or tutorial text easier to distinguish.
- Sit far enough away that you can scan the entire screen without turning your head repeatedly.
- If a large display makes flashes or motion feel more intense, pair TV mode with camera shake and hit flash disabled.
There is no requirement to finish a stage in the mode in which you started it. A practical routine is handheld for short, detail-focused sessions, tabletop when your hands need support, and TV when text or visual separation is the limiting factor.

Make navigation and learning less demanding
SEGA’s April 2026 update enlarged the in-stage map display and added a menu option to review previously seen tutorials. Use both features as cognitive aids, not only as emergency tools.
Use the enlarged map when orientation is the problem
Hidden paths and more than a dozen stages make navigation part of the experience. If you are repeatedly backtracking because you cannot remember a turn, open the larger map instead of relying on memory. Check it at a safe pause or between encounters so you are not trying to read it while reacting to an attack.
Review tutorials instead of relearning by failure
When you return after a break, review the relevant tutorial before a difficult section. This is especially useful if you changed the control layout, because it lets you connect the written instruction to the new button positions without the pressure of a boss or timed sequence.
Update before a completion-focused run
Install the latest available patch before investing in a long collectible or completion session. SEGA’s April 17, 2026 notice says Nintendo Switch version 1.21 fixed a critical save-data issue involving three save slots at high completion percentages. The notice concerns the Nintendo Switch version; check the version shown on your own console and apply the current update offered for your edition.

- Close the game and allow the console to connect to the internet.
- Use the system’s software-update command for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance.
- Wait for the installation to finish before beginning a high-completion run.
- Keep more than one save slot in use when the game allows it, especially as your completion percentage becomes high.
- If a save behaves unexpectedly after an update, stop overwriting slots and follow Nintendo or SEGA’s current support guidance for the affected version.
The update is part of a comfort plan because losing progress adds avoidable stress. It does not change the recommended difficulty or visual settings; those remain personal choices.
Build a setup around your session length
For a first session
- Choose Apprentice.
- Remap attack, jump, dodge and guard before entering a difficult stage.
- Leave visual effects on initially unless you already know that flashes or motion bother you.
- Play in handheld for a short test if the sharper portable image is comfortable, then change to tabletop or TV as soon as your posture deteriorates.
For a long evening
- Use Novice or Custom if you notice yourself rushing inputs or tightening your grip.
- Turn off camera shake and hit flash at the first sign of motion or light sensitivity rather than waiting for a headache.
- Use the enlarged map and tutorial review between stages.
- Take a mode or posture break before continuing; switching from handheld to tabletop changes the physical load without changing your progress.
For a completion run
- Install the current patch and use separate save slots where possible.
- Choose the lowest difficulty that lets you read the environment and practise optional routes without fatigue.
- Enable character outlines if hidden paths or enemies are difficult to distinguish from the background.
- Keep a consistent control layout for every mode.
- Use map checks to plan exploration rather than repeating long sections from memory.
TechRadar estimates approximately 15–20 hours for full completion based on its 2025 review experience. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed playtime; your difficulty, exploration choices, breaks and familiarity with action-platformer controls will change the total.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you notice | First change | If it continues |
|---|---|---|
| You are hit because several attacks arrive together | Lower attack frequency in Custom | Lower enemy damage as well, then practise one encounter at a time. |
| You can follow attacks but one mistake ends the attempt | Lower enemy damage | Move to Apprentice or Novice if the pressure remains tiring. |
| Your eyes feel strained during impacts | Disable hit flash | Disable camera shake and reduce hit stop if the image still feels disruptive. |
| You lose Joe or an enemy against the scenery | Enable character outlines | Switch to tabletop or TV if the portable screen remains difficult to scan. |
| Your wrists or thumbs ache | Remap repeated actions and move to tabletop | Use TV mode with a controller and keep the same logical layout. |
| You forget mechanics after a break | Review previously seen tutorials | Rehearse the action in a safe area before a difficult stage. |
| You are worried about losing late-game progress | Install the current patch and preserve multiple save slots | Check the version-specific support instructions if a save issue appears. |
Settings that matter less than the basics
Do not spend the first hour searching for a perfect combination of effects. Difficulty pressure, button reach, visual motion, display size and posture account for the major comfort differences documented for this release. Cosmetic preferences can wait until those are stable.
Likewise, do not assume that a higher difficulty is automatically more engaging or that a lower one invalidates exploration. The game retains its katana, kunai, Ninjutsu, Ninpo, combo, Amulet, Ningi, platforming and hidden-path systems across the documented choices. The useful setting is the one that lets you perceive those systems without turning every stage into a test of endurance.
A concise baseline to return to
If you change settings frequently and lose track of what helped, return to this baseline: Apprentice difficulty; Custom with lower enemy damage only if needed; attack, jump, dodge and guard remapped for short reach; camera shake and hit flash off when they cause discomfort; hit stop adjusted only when its pause is distracting; character outlines on when silhouettes disappear; handheld for a sharp portable image, tabletop or TV for support and larger viewing; enlarged map and tutorial review whenever navigation or memory becomes a barrier; and the latest software update installed before a completion run.
From there, make one change and play long enough to judge it. This keeps the fast combat readable, protects your hands and eyes, and preserves the flexibility that Switch 2’s three display modes and the game’s Custom difficulty provide.
