You can get a complete role-playing adventure without committing to an 80-hour map-clearing project. The strongest short alternatives are Costume Quest 2 (7–8 hours), Atelier Marie Remake (9–15 hours), West of Loathing (8–13 hours), Arco (12–15 hours), Shadowrun Returns (12–15 hours), and Super Mario RPG (12–15 hours). Each has a clear campaign, a distinct combat hook, and far less checklist pressure than a typical open-world RPG.
These playtime figures are editorial estimates from GamesRadar+ published in 2026. They describe a typical main-story route, not a guaranteed completion time. If you want a longer game that remains chapter-driven rather than sprawling, Octopath Traveler II is the outlier: 59.5 hours for its main story, 82 hours with side content, and 94.5 hours for completionist play according to GOG’s page using HowLongToBeat data.

| Octopath Traveler II | 59.5 hours main; 82 hours with sides; 94.5 hours completionist | PC and consoles, including Switch | Turn-based combat, jobs, character chapters and day/night path actions | A focused but decidedly long JRPG |
GamesRadar+ frames its short-game list around main stories that should take no more than 20 hours. Optional scenes, exploration, multiple endings, difficulty choices and time spent experimenting can move your personal total above or below those estimates.

How to choose a short RPG instead of an open-world one
Start with the time you actually have
For the shortest possible commitment, choose Costume Quest 2. Its 7–8-hour estimate can fit into a few evenings or a relaxed weekend. West of Loathing is the next step up at 8–13 hours, while Atelier Marie Remake ranges from 9 to 15 hours because its calendar and alchemy systems invite different routes. Arco, Shadowrun Returns and Super Mario RPG all sit in the 12–15-hour band, long enough for a substantial campaign but still far from the 40-, 60- or 80-hour schedules associated with large open worlds.
Decide whether you want planning or momentum
Atelier Marie Remake makes time management part of the game: Marie has a final chance to graduate magic school, and every action advances the calendar. That is a good fit if choosing what to gather, craft or pursue is more appealing than wandering a giant map. The other five short recommendations are more linear in their core progression, so they are easier to play in a fixed sequence without maintaining a long-term calendar plan.
Match the combat to your preferred rhythm
Super Mario RPG uses familiar turn-based party battles. Arco offers tactical real-time encounters that can be paused while you issue commands. Shadowrun Returns follows an isometric CRPG model built around a party and tactical decisions. Costume Quest 2 uses costume abilities to shape both combat and exploration. West of Loathing emphasizes its writing, humor and optional discoveries, while Atelier Marie Remake makes alchemy and scheduling as important as fighting.

A short main story does not mean every player will finish in the quoted window. Atelier Marie Remake has multiple endings and rewards replayable planning. West of Loathing includes optional exploration and collectible hats. Octopath Traveler II has character chapters and side stories that can substantially extend the campaign. If you want a clean finish line, follow the critical path in the six sub-20-hour games and treat optional objectives as extras rather than obligations.
The best short RPG alternatives, in detail
Costume Quest 2: the fastest, lightest option
Costume Quest 2 is the clearest answer for someone who wants an RPG structure without a major time investment. GamesRadar+ estimates 7–8 hours for the main story, the shortest figure in this group. It is a light, humorous Halloween adventure in which costumes are not merely cosmetic: their abilities affect battles and exploration. That gives the game a simple role-playing loop—choose the useful costume, use its ability, and keep moving—without the equipment management and map-clearing burden of a large open world.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Its tone makes it particularly suitable for a low-stress session. The humor and seasonal setting keep the stakes playful, and the compact length reduces the risk of abandoning a save file halfway through. Choose it when your priority is finishing an entire adventure quickly, not building an elaborate character or uncovering dozens of optional systems.
- Choose it for: a 7–8-hour campaign, comedy and low-pressure play.
- Be aware: its lighter ability-driven design is less suited to players seeking a deep CRPG ruleset.
West of Loathing: the writing-first comedy RPG
West of Loathing takes a different route to brevity. GamesRadar+ places the main story at 8–13 hours, and the game’s monochrome western presentation makes room for jokes, unusual classes, optional exploration and collectible hats instead of visual spectacle. It is a strong choice when the reason you are tired of open-world RPGs is not combat length but the volume of serious errands and map markers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe optional content matters here. You can follow the central story for a relatively quick finish, or detour into discoveries and hat collecting when you want a longer session. That structure lets you control the commitment more directly than in an open world that constantly presents new icons. Its PC and Switch availability also makes it convenient for short, portable sessions.
- Choose it for: sharp comedy, unusual classes and exploration you can take or leave.
- Be aware: the monochrome presentation and writing-led design are the main attraction; it is not a spectacle-driven western.
Atelier Marie Remake: a compact crafting and planning RPG
Atelier Marie Remake is the best fit for players who want a role-playing game built around decisions rather than distance. GamesRadar+ estimates 9–15 hours. Marie has a final opportunity to graduate from magic school, and the calendar advances whenever you act. Gathering, alchemy, travel and other activities therefore compete for limited time, turning the campaign into a sequence of planning choices.
This structure replaces open-world wandering with a readable schedule. You decide which goals matter, use the alchemy system to prepare for them, and accept that one route may not reveal everything. Multiple endings mean the first run can be a complete experience without being the only possible one. Players who enjoy optimizing a plan or replaying with different priorities will get more from it than players who want a purely linear story.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The remake is listed for PC, PS4, PS5 and Switch. Because the estimate spans six hours, treat 9 hours as a brisk route and 15 hours as a more involved first playthrough rather than a promise that every ending fits in that window.
- Choose it for: alchemy, calendar pressure and replayable planning.
- Be aware: every action advances time, so a completionist approach can conflict with the short-game goal.
Arco: a focused story with pauseable tactical combat
Arco combines three linked short stories set in a Mesoamerican fantasy world. GamesRadar+ estimates 12–15 hours for the main story. Its defining mechanical choice is tactical real-time combat that can be paused for commands. You get the urgency of a live encounter while retaining time to consider positioning and actions, a useful middle ground between purely real-time action and traditional turn-based menus.
The three-story structure gives Arco a deliberate scope. Instead of a single enormous map, the campaign moves through connected perspectives, making it easier to maintain narrative momentum. The result suits players who want a distinctive setting and tactical decisions but do not want to learn a huge open-world ecosystem.
Arco is listed for PC and Switch. Pick it when a compact narrative and unusual combat model matter more than conventional party progression or a large inventory of side activities.
- Choose it for: pauseable tactics, a Mesoamerican fantasy setting and multi-perspective storytelling.
- Be aware: its combat is neither standard turn-based nor uninterrupted action, so it rewards players comfortable with that hybrid rhythm.
Shadowrun Returns: a classic CRPG campaign without the sprawl
Shadowrun Returns delivers the most traditional computer role-playing structure in the short list. GamesRadar+ estimates 12–15 hours. The isometric cyberpunk-fantasy campaign begins as a murder investigation and expands into a corporate conspiracy, giving the story a clear investigative spine rather than an open-ended map of unrelated activities.

Its party-based CRPG systems are the reason to choose it. You assemble a group, make tactical decisions and move through a focused campaign that preserves the genre’s investigation-and-conversation feel in a compact package. The setting combines cyberpunk and fantasy, so it works for readers who want a serious conspiracy after playing lighter comedies such as Costume Quest 2 or West of Loathing.
GamesRadar+ lists PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions. Verify the edition available in your region, because platform availability can vary by storefront and release edition.
- Choose it for: isometric party play, investigation and a corporate-conspiracy plot.
- Be aware: it is denser and more serious than the comedy-focused entries, even though its campaign is similarly short.
Super Mario RPG: the safest all-round console pick
Super Mario RPG is a polished remake of the SNES role-playing adventure, with a playful tone and traditional party progression. GamesRadar+ estimates 12–15 hours for the main story. That places it in the same runtime tier as Arco and Shadowrun Returns, but its approachable structure makes it the easiest recommendation for someone who has not played many classic RPGs.
Turn-based battles provide a predictable pace, while party progression supplies the familiar sense of improving a team over the course of a quest. The remake format also makes it a straightforward choice for Switch owners who want a self-contained console RPG rather than a sprawling contemporary world. The principal trade-off is scope: it aims for a polished, focused adventure, not dozens of systems or a huge optional map.
- Choose it for: approachable turn-based combat, a playful tone and a polished 12–15-hour campaign.
- Be aware: it is available on Switch, so players on other platforms need a different recommendation from this list.
Which game fits your preferred tone?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |

| Cozy crafting with meaningful scheduling | Atelier Marie Remake | Alchemy and the graduation deadline make planning the central activity. |

| A serious investigation | Shadowrun Returns | The murder case develops into a corporate conspiracy within a classic CRPG framework. |
| A familiar, accessible console RPG | Super Mario RPG | Traditional turn-based party progression and a playful presentation keep the route readable. |

When Octopath Traveler II is the better alternative
Octopath Traveler II belongs in a separate category. GOG lists 59.5 hours for the main story, 82 hours for the main story plus side content, and 94.5 hours for completionist play, using HowLongToBeat data on its 2026 page. Those figures rule it out as a strict under-20-hour recommendation.
It can still solve the underlying problem with open-world RPGs: its campaign is organized around character stories and chapters rather than one undifferentiated checklist. The game takes place across the eastern and western continents of Solistia and follows eight travelers with distinct motivations and skills. Turn-based combat, job development and day/night path actions create substantial variety, while the chapter structure gives you clearer stopping points than a giant open map.
Choose Octopath Traveler II when you dislike open-world sprawl but still have time for a long JRPG. Its 59.5-hour main-story figure is almost four times the upper estimate of the short list, so calling it a short game would set the wrong expectation. It is better described as a structured, long-form alternative.
A practical decision path
- Set your ceiling. Pick Costume Quest 2 for roughly one weekend, West of Loathing or Atelier Marie Remake for a one- to two-week evening project, and Arco, Shadowrun Returns or Super Mario RPG for the upper end of the short range.
- Choose your dominant activity. Select alchemy and scheduling for Atelier Marie Remake, writing and jokes for West of Loathing, investigation for Shadowrun Returns, or straightforward party battles for Super Mario RPG.
- Decide how much optional content you want. Follow the critical path in Costume Quest 2, Arco or Super Mario RPG for the cleanest finish. Leave room for detours in West of Loathing, multiple endings in Atelier Marie Remake, and side stories if you step up to Octopath Traveler II.
- Confirm your platform. Switch covers six of the recommendations, while PC covers most of the list. PlayStation and Xbox support is concentrated in Costume Quest 2 and Shadowrun Returns, with Atelier Marie Remake also on PS4 and PS5.
- Use the estimates as planning ranges. GamesRadar+’s 2026 numbers are editorial estimates for main stories. Your pace, difficulty choices and optional exploration can change the final total.
Bottom line
For the smallest commitment, play Costume Quest 2. West of Loathing is the writing-first comedy choice, Atelier Marie Remake is the planning-and-crafting choice, Arco is the tactical narrative choice, Shadowrun Returns is the compact serious CRPG, and Super Mario RPG is the most broadly approachable console option. If you want the same chapter-based focus but can accept a much longer campaign, choose Octopath Traveler II and plan for 59.5 hours or more.
