Start with SILENT HILL 2 (2024) on PS5 or PC. It is the strongest modern follow-up to P.T. if you want psychological horror, oppressive sound design, and a focused story without tracking down legacy hardware. Choose the original SILENT HILL (1999) and SILENT HILL 3 if continuity matters most, SILENT HILL 4: The Room if you want something structurally strange, and SILENT HILL: The Short Message if you want a free, short PS5 sampler.
The short answer: which Silent Hill should you play after P.T.?
P.T. fans usually want three things: a hostile atmosphere, psychological rather than purely physical horror, and a story that trusts the player to interpret what is happening. The best match depends on whether you value modern access, direct continuity with the older games, or experimentation.

| 1 | SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) | Most accessible overall follow-up to P.T. | Self-contained remake of the 2001 story | Combat is present, but tension and exploration remain central | PS5 and PC/Steam; physical and digital editions; current price not stated |
| 2 | SILENT HILL (1999) followed by SILENT HILL 3 | Original story continuity | Direct lineage through the first and third games | Legacy survival-horror combat | Original hardware or legitimate legacy access; regional availability varies |
| 3 | SILENT HILL 4: The Room | Experimental structure and an apartment-as-dungeon design | Part of the series, but not a required continuation of SILENT HILL 2 | Combat mixed with avoidance and resource pressure | Legacy platform access; verify the platform before buying |
| 4 | SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories | No-combat, chase-focused horror | Reimagines the first game’s premise rather than continuing it directly | Chases and evasion instead of conventional combat | Konami’s catalog lists a PSP version; used physical availability is likely to vary |
| 5 | SILENT HILL f | A new setting on current consoles and PC | New story and setting | Action and survival systems serve a psychological-horror narrative | PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts; launched September 25, 2025; Day One physical edition |
| 6 | SILENT HILL: The Short Message | A free, short introduction | Independent of previous and upcoming titles | Primarily exploration, evasion and scripted tension | Free on PS5 |
| 7 | SILENT HILL: Downpour | Optional later-series exploration | Later spin-off, after the Team Silent-era entries and modern releases | Combat and exploration with a more conventional adventure structure | Konami’s catalog lists PS3; legacy access varies |
This is a fit-for-P.T. ranking, not an objective review aggregate. The order weighs atmosphere, psychological storytelling, continuity, how much combat interrupts fear, replay value, presentation, and how realistically a reader can play each title now.
Why Silent Hill 2 (2024) is the best starting point
A complete psychological-horror story
The remake is the safest recommendation when you want the emotional and atmospheric qualities associated with P.T. without relying on old hardware. Konami describes it as “a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” That means the game is a modern production built around a complete, focused story rather than a short teaser or an unfinished experiment.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
- KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
- The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
- Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
- Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Its appeal is not simply that it is new. The design puts oppressive sound, environmental unease and psychological uncertainty ahead of spectacle. You still have combat, but the game’s identity comes from moving through threatening spaces, interpreting disturbing imagery and following a tightly authored narrative.
Platforms and editions
Konami lists the remake for PS5 and PC through Steam. It was announced for October 8, 2024, with physical and digital editions. A physical PS5 copy is the straightforward choice if you prefer a disc, while the PC version is the practical route for players who already use a gaming computer. No universal current price is published, so check the store or region you intend to use rather than relying on an old listing.
Should you play the 2001 original first?
No. SILENT HILL 2 is largely self-contained, and the remake is designed to stand on its own. Start with the 2024 version if modern controls, current hardware and a more accessible presentation matter most. Choose the original only when you specifically want the visual language, pacing and hardware limitations of early-2000s survival horror. Playing the first game is not a prerequisite for understanding James Sunderland’s story.

The recommended order
- SILENT HILL (1999)
- SILENT HILL 2 (2001)
- SILENT HILL 3
The first and third games form the clearest continuity route. The second game sits between them chronologically as a release, but its story is largely self-contained, so it can be played independently or inserted between the two continuity entries for the full original-era experience.
Why this route works for a P.T. fan
The original games show where the series’ oppressive spaces, unreliable perceptions and sound-led dread came from. Their presentation is older and less immediately comfortable than the 2024 remake, but that distance can strengthen the unease: fixed or constrained viewpoints, deliberate movement and limited resources make ordinary rooms feel unsafe.
SILENT HILL 3 is especially valuable after the 1999 game because its emotional and mythological impact depends on that lineage. If you begin with the remake and later want to understand the series’ original continuity, go back to the 1999 game before playing the third entry.
The access problem
There is no single current storefront that makes every original game universally available. Hardware, regional catalogs and legitimate legacy options differ. Treat listings for original discs and compatible systems as region-specific, and verify that the copy and hardware you are considering are legal and actually compatible. Do not assume that a modern console version exists merely because a game is well known.
Choose Silent Hill 4: The Room for the strangest structure
An apartment that becomes the dungeon
SILENT HILL 4: The Room is the experimental recommendation. Its apartment-as-dungeon design gives the game a different rhythm from the street-and-building progression associated with the earlier entries. The familiar room is not a safe menu screen; it becomes a place to watch, investigate and fear.
How it differs from P.T.
Both games can make domestic architecture feel hostile, but The Room is a full-length game with exploration, combat and a broader progression structure. It is less of a concentrated looping puzzle and more of an alienated journey that repeatedly returns you to a corrupted home base. Select it when you want ideas and structure to take priority over a direct imitation of P.T.’s hallway tension.
Access before purchase
This is a legacy-platform recommendation. Confirm the platform, region and condition of any copy before committing; the available edition is not established as a universal modern download. Its unusual design makes it worth seeking out, but access friction is part of the decision.
Pick Shattered Memories for chase horror without conventional combat
A no-combat detour
SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories is the best choice when you want pursuit, vulnerability and psychological interpretation rather than fighting monsters. The game’s emphasis is on chases and evasion, so the pressure comes from route choice, movement and the fear of being caught.

It is a reimagining of the first game’s premise, not the next chapter in the original continuity. That makes it a useful detour after P.T.: you get a recognizable framework filtered through a different structure and a stronger focus on escape. It should not replace the 1999-to-SILENT HILL 3 route if your goal is story continuity.

Where it can be played
Konami’s catalog lists a PSP version. Because this is a legacy release, used physical availability and regional compatibility can change. Check the exact PSP edition and language support before buying; do not infer current availability from a search result for a different platform.
Play Silent Hill f for the newest setting
A 1960s Japanese setting
SILENT HILL f is the strongest current-hardware choice when you want a new setting rather than another return to the familiar American town. It is set in 1960s Japan and follows high-school student Shimizu Hinako. Konami describes it as “the first entry set in Japan for the SILENT HILL series.”
That change of place is not cosmetic. A different period and cultural setting give the series new social pressures, imagery and ways to represent isolation. Choose it when you want the franchise’s psychological-horror approach expressed through a fresh environment, not when you need a direct continuation of the older games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlatforms and release status
Konami launched SILENT HILL f on September 25, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts. A Day One physical edition is available. Konami Digital Entertainment reported that the game “surpassed 2 million units in worldwide cumulative shipments,” measured as of April 22, 2026. That shipment figure is a company-reported global total, not a guarantee of local store stock or a particular region’s sales.
Who should choose it over the remake?
Choose SILENT HILL f when novelty, current-generation support and the Japanese setting are your priorities. Choose the SILENT HILL 2 remake when you want the most direct match for P.T.’s concentrated psychological atmosphere and a story rooted in the series’ best-known original period.
Use Silent Hill: The Short Message as a free PS5 sampler
What it is
SILENT HILL: The Short Message is a short, complete game available free on PS5. Konami’s official description says: “SILENT HILL: The Short Message is a short game with a complete story that is independent of the previous and upcoming titles in the series.” That independence makes it safe to play first; no earlier entry is required.

- Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean
- Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.
Its subject matter
The story addresses slander and bullying on social networks. Those themes place the horror in a contemporary social environment rather than asking you to learn the series’ mythology. Expect exploration, evasion and scripted tension rather than a combat-heavy campaign.
Why it is useful after P.T.
It is the lowest-risk way to sample the series’ modern presentation on PS5. It is not a replacement for a full Silent Hill 2 campaign, and its short format means less room for the slow escalation of a longer game. Use it to test whether the series’ mood, sound and visual language work for you before committing to a paid release.
Keep Silent Hill: Downpour for later exploration
Where it belongs in the order
SILENT HILL: Downpour is an optional later-series entry. Put it after the Team Silent-era games and the modern releases unless you specifically want to explore a later spin-off. Starting here can give you the wrong impression of the series’ original continuity and its most influential design priorities.
Platform and expectations
Konami’s catalog lists a PS3 version. That makes access a legacy-hardware question, and availability varies by region and condition. Approach it as an additional exploration of the series rather than the definitive answer to “what should I play after P.T.?”

| If your priority is… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Current hardware and easy setup | SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) | Officially listed for PS5 and PC/Steam, with physical and digital editions |
| The original visual and audio lineage | SILENT HILL 2 (2001) | It is the source version of the remake’s story, but requires legitimate legacy access |
| Continuity from the beginning | SILENT HILL (1999), then SILENT HILL 3 | The first and third games provide the central original-series route |
| A self-contained story either way | Either version of SILENT HILL 2 | The second game can be played independently of the first and third |
The remake is not a substitute for preservation-minded players who want the exact 2001 experience. Conversely, the original is not a mandatory homework assignment for someone who simply wants to play a strong psychological-horror game on current hardware.

If you want to avoid fighting
Choose Shattered Memories for its chase-and-evasion emphasis, or try The Short Message for a free PS5 sampler built around exploration and tension. Neither is the original continuity route.
If you want a strange, uncomfortable structure
Choose The Room. Its apartment-as-dungeon concept creates a distinct kind of unease and rewards players who enjoy experimentation more than straightforward progression.
If you want a new cultural and historical setting
Choose SILENT HILL f for its 1960s Japan setting and Shimizu Hinako’s story. It is the newest full entry in this list and runs on current consoles and PC.
If you want the shortest commitment
Choose The Short Message. It is explicitly short, complete and independent, and it is free on PS5.
A legal-access checklist for the older games
- Identify the exact platform. A listing for PSP, PS3 or original hardware is not interchangeable with a modern-console release.
- Check your region. Catalogs, language options and disc compatibility can differ between territories.
- Confirm the edition. Verify that the item is the game you intend to play, not a soundtrack, demo, import with incompatible language support or a different series entry.
- Use legitimate access. Buy an authentic physical copy, use an officially supported digital or backward-compatible release where available, or play on hardware you legally own.
- Budget for uncertainty. No current prices, universal stock or a single storefront for the legacy titles are published, so treat every used-game price and availability claim as temporary.
For a reader who does not already own legacy hardware, the 2024 remake, SILENT HILL f and The Short Message are the dependable current-platform options identified here. The original games remain important, but access is a separate purchasing and compatibility decision.
