Best Single-Player Games for Players Tired of Always-Online Requirements

If you need games that remain playable when Wi‑Fi disappears, start with Hades for short sessions, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Divinity: Original Sin 2 for long narrative campaigns, Grim Dawn for offline action-RPG combat, Don’t Starve for survival, Heroes of Might & Magic 3 or Crusader Kings 3 for strategy, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for a party-focused RPG. On PC, the exact experience depends on whether you buy a DRM-free build or prepare a launcher’s offline mode before disconnecting.

That distinction matters. “Single-player” describes who you play with; it does not automatically promise that the game can be installed, authenticated or updated without an internet connection. The guide below separates genuinely offline ownership from games that need one connected setup, then explains how to test your copy before a flight, commute or outage.

What “offline” actually means

There are three practical levels of offline access. Check which one applies to a specific edition before you leave home.

1. DRM-free and fully offline

A DRM-free release supplies the game files directly, usually through downloadable installers. After the files are downloaded, the game can be installed and launched without a client continuously checking a license. GOG’s DRM-free policy, published 17 March 2022, states: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” It also says downloaded games can be kept and backed up and that “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” Optional online functions can still exist, so check the individual product page and keep installers, patches and saves in a safe place.

2. Offline after one connected launch

Many Steam games work this way. The launcher needs an internet connection for installation, updates, ownership checks or the first launch, but the campaign can run later in Steam Offline Mode. PC Gamer’s offline-games guide, updated 15 November 2024, notes that most launchers have an offline mode while warning that many current games require one connected launch. This is the normal expectation for the Steam editions listed in this article.

3. Offline campaign with online extras unavailable

A game can remain playable while achievements, cloud saves, multiplayer, seasonal events, account features or cosmetic services disappear. Losing those extras does not make the campaign online-only, but it changes what you can do while disconnected. Treat “offline play” and “all features” as separate questions.

At-a-glance recommendations

Game Best for Offline expectation Edition and platform note
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) Long, story-driven open-world RPG Playable offline after the relevant launcher setup; a DRM-free PC build may avoid a client PC Gamer’s guide covers both Steam and GOG editions. Verify the exact edition before travel.
Hades (2020) Fast runs that fit a short break or a long session Internet is not required for its single-player play once installed Steam offline preparation still applies if you own the Steam build.
Grim Dawn (2016) Top-down action RPG without an always-online requirement Offline-capable campaign A useful alternative to online-required games such as Path of Exile and Diablo 4.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 (2017) Deep, choice-heavy RPG campaign Offline single-player after installation and any required first setup Confirm the store edition and keep current updates installed.
Don’t Starve (2013) Survival and experimentation Works offline PC Gamer notes that there are no achievements to lose while offline.
Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999) Turn-based strategy, city building and map clearing Classic single-player modes are offline The complete GOG edition includes expansions that are absent from the HD edition sold elsewhere.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (2018) Party RPG with programmable Gambit tactics Offline campaign after the platform’s normal setup Check the platform and edition because account rules differ between PC and consoles.
Crusader Kings 3 (2020) Long-form dynasty and grand-strategy sandbox Core single-player can be played offline after setup; online services are separate Prepare updates and test the installed build before disconnecting.

The best games by the kind of offline session you want

Hades: the strongest pick for short, repeatable sessions

Hades is a fast action roguelike built around repeat runs. A failed attempt does not end the game; it feeds upgrades, story conversations and new strategies into the next run. That structure makes it practical on a train or plane: you can complete a meaningful escape attempt in a short window, or keep playing for hours without needing a network connection. PC Gamer specifically says an internet connection does not prevent play.

Its offline limitation is mostly administrative. Steam achievements, cloud synchronization and other account services may not update until you reconnect. If those records matter, synchronize before leaving and copy important saves according to your platform’s normal backup options.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: a large world for a long trip

The Witcher 3 is the choice for a substantial, story-led open-world RPG. Its quests, exploration and character-driven writing support dozens of hours, so it suits a holiday or a period without reliable broadband better than a game that expects frequent events. PC Gamer includes it in its offline guide and identifies both Steam and GOG editions.

The storefront changes the preparation. A Steam copy should be updated, launched once and placed in Offline Mode. A GOG copy can use the client-optional, downloadable ownership model described in GOG’s policy, but verify that the exact product page and any expansions you own are available in the files you downloaded. Do not assume that a new patch or a separate mod manager will work without testing it first.

Grim Dawn: offline action RPG progression

Grim Dawn offers the familiar loop of exploring dangerous areas, collecting equipment and developing a build, but its campaign does not depend on a permanent server connection. It is therefore a strong fit if you want the combat and loot of an online action RPG without being blocked by a disconnected device. PC Gamer contrasts its offline capability with online-required Path of Exile and Diablo 4.

Before travel, let the game finish installing and updating, then launch the intended single-player mode while connected. Multiplayer, account services or community features are not the reason to buy it for an offline trip; the value here is the self-contained campaign.

Divinity: Original Sin 2: the deepest narrative choice

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is designed for players who want a long campaign in which conversations, exploration and tactical battles respond to their decisions. Its turn-based combat rewards planning rather than reflexes, making it comfortable to play on a small screen or in stop-and-start sessions. You can pause between encounters without losing the thread of the story.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition - Xbox One
  • If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
  • Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.

The offline version is the installed single-player campaign. Cooperative play and platform services are different features, so verify that you are launching the local campaign and that your edition has completed its first connected setup before disabling the network.

Don’t Starve: survival without a connection

Don’t Starve turns isolation into the subject of play. You gather resources, craft tools, manage hunger and sanity, and learn from a world that punishes carelessness. Each run creates a practical reason to try again, but the game does not require a live service to make the survival loop work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PC Gamer notes that Don’t Starve has no achievements to lose while offline. That makes it unusually straightforward for players who want a self-contained installation rather than a connected account experience. Keep in mind that a particular expansion or related edition can have different platform requirements; check the product you actually own.

Heroes of Might & Magic 3: classic strategy with lasting replay value

Heroes of Might & Magic 3 combines turn-based army movement, city development, resource management and map exploration. Randomized maps provide replayability after you finish the authored campaigns, and the pace is naturally suited to interruptions: you can think through a turn, close the device and return later.

Edition choice is unusually important. The complete GOG edition includes expansions that are absent from the HD edition available elsewhere. If those campaigns and units are part of your plan, compare the contents before buying rather than assuming that every modern release is equivalent. Once installed, the classic single-player modes are designed for offline play.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age: programmable party combat

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a party RPG centered on the Gambit system. You set conditional rules for companions—such as healing an ally below a health threshold—then adjust those rules as enemies and abilities change. That gives the game a strategic character distinct from a purely manual battle system and supports a long, uninterrupted campaign.

Because platform account and licensing rules differ, confirm the exact PC or console edition and complete its required setup while connected. Once the campaign is installed, there is no design reason for ordinary story battles to need a live connection; online account services remain a separate matter.

Crusader Kings 3: a dynasty sandbox for the longest campaigns

Crusader Kings 3 is for players who want an emergent story rather than a fixed sequence of missions. You guide a dynasty through marriages, alliances, wars, succession crises and personal rivalries. A single campaign can span generations, and the most memorable outcomes often come from decisions that were never scripted as a traditional plot.

The core grand-strategy sandbox can be played by yourself after the installed build is ready. Prepare patches and any content you intend to use before disconnecting, and test loading a save in the offline state. Multiplayer, platform accounts and cloud saves should be treated as optional services, not as evidence that the local campaign is always-online.

How to prepare a Steam game for a trip without internet

SEGA’s official Steam instructions, updated 21 March 2025, describe a reliable preparation sequence. Use it for the Steam edition of any game in this list.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  1. Connect to the internet. Open Steam and allow the game and Steam itself to finish downloading updates. PC Gamer recommends completing updates before disconnecting because a pending patch can prevent a launch later.
  2. Verify the files. In your Library, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files verification option. This catches incomplete or damaged downloads while you still have a connection.
  3. Launch the game once. Start the exact single-player mode you plan to use. Let first-run configuration, redistributables, shader preparation and save creation finish. Quit normally.
  4. Choose Steam → Go Offline. Follow Steam’s menu command, then restart or relaunch the game while still disconnected to confirm that the title opens and a save loads.
  5. Exit Steam normally. SEGA warns that forcing Steam to close can erase stored offline data. Use Steam’s normal exit command before shutting down the computer.

Do not wait until the airport to discover that a launcher update, license check or publisher-specific DRM differs from the general Steam pattern. Test the device with Wi‑Fi disabled and, if possible, with the computer restarted.

How a DRM-free download changes ownership

GOG’s 17 March 2022 policy sets a clear baseline: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same statement says downloaded games can be retained and backed up and that the GOG GALAXY client remains optional for single-player offline access. In practical terms, download the installers and patches, store a backup on another drive, and keep the installation media available if you expect to reinstall without internet.

This policy does not guarantee that every optional feature works offline. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, account-linked bonuses and external mod tools can still require a connection. Read the product page for the exact edition, and launch the game from the installed files before travel so that any first-run components are already present.

Console and account caveats

Console ownership is not identical to PC storefront ownership. A title can be advertised as single-player while the platform still requires an account for purchase, sharing, cloud services or license management. PlayStation’s official Pragmata page describes it as a single-player action-adventure scheduled for PS5 on 17 April 2026, while also stating that online features require a PlayStation account and documenting Console Sharing and Offline Play. The lesson is broader than that one title: read the platform’s offline-play requirements, not only the game’s player-count label.

PlayStation’s No Law listing currently says “Offline play enabled” and “1 player” for PS5, but its release date remains “to be determined.” It is an announced example, not a presently purchasable recommendation. For any console game, download updates and licenses, sign in on the console that will be used, enable the platform’s offline-sharing setting where applicable, and test a disconnected launch.

A pre-travel checklist

  • Choose the exact platform, storefront and edition; expansions and remasters can have different files or requirements.
  • Install every update you expect to need, including launcher updates.
  • Launch the game connected and create or load a local save.
  • Confirm that the campaign—not just the title screen—works with Wi‑Fi disabled.
  • Decide whether losing cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer or events matters for this trip.
  • Back up DRM-free installers, patches and saves when the storefront permits it.
  • Leave enough free storage for shader caches, temporary files and future saves.
  • Exit launchers normally rather than killing their processes.

Which game should you choose?

Pick Hades if your priority is a compact run-based game. Choose Don’t Starve for survival systems and experimentation. Grim Dawn is the closest fit for offline loot-driven action, while The Witcher 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age are better for a sustained RPG campaign. Select Heroes of Might & Magic 3 for deliberate turn-based sessions and classic map variety, or Crusader Kings 3 when you want an open-ended dynasty that can occupy weeks.

The safest purchase is the one whose offline state you have personally tested on the device you will carry. Storefront policy, edition, launcher updates and optional online services matter as much as the single-player label.
