Build around one main style—melee, ranged, stealth, magic, or unarmed—then add stamina or mana support and defenses that address the problems you encounter. There is no substantiated universal perk order. For unarmed characters, use the post-1.30 advice below: the October 2026 update overhauled that skill tree.
How to choose skills and perks
- Pick your main source of damage. Decide whether you want to fight up close, use a bow, rely on stealth openings, cast spells, or fight unarmed.
- Invest in the matching skill. Focus early points on the weapon or combat style you actually use rather than spreading them across several damage approaches.
- Support its resource demands. Add stamina tools for a style that depends on repeated physical attacks, or mana efficiency for a caster.
- Patch a real weakness. Choose defense, mobility, or utility when it addresses a problem you are facing—not simply because it appears on a recommended list.
The game supports different combinations of attributes, skills, and gear, so these are decision principles rather than a tested ranking. The official Steam page describes that build flexibility. General playstyle recommendations are secondary guidance, not developer-verified rankings.
Best skills and perks by playstyle
Melee
Prioritize the skill for your chosen weapon type, then support the way you attack with stamina management and enough defense to remain in range. Two-handed weapons, one-handed weapons, shields, and unarmed combat have different rhythms; investing early in all of them can leave your main approach unfocused.
Ranged and stealth
Bow-focused characters benefit from precision and mobility. Stealth adds the potential for a strong opening, but depends on staying undetected long enough to use it. If you do not want to manage enemy awareness and positioning, favor reliable ranged combat and defensive support over a stealth-heavy setup.

Magic
For a caster, consider mana pressure and survivability alongside spell damage. A high-damage spell is less useful in a long encounter if you cannot keep casting or survive long enough to use it. General guidance recommends spell efficiency and scaling, with defensive support where needed; that guide predates patch 1.30 and does not establish a current universal caster ranking.
Unarmed
Patch 1.30, released with the free Fists of Fury DLC on 1 October 2026, overhauled the Unarmed skill tree. The developer says existing characters’ spent Unarmed points were refunded as part of the overhaul, so older unarmed builds may need to be reassigned. The update describes unarmed as a fully supported build with its own weapon category, gear, skill tree, and dedicated teacher. Fistfighting weapons count as Unarmed attacks, so Unarmed bonuses from gear and talents can apply while you have one equipped. See the official update announcement for the patch details.

The developer-highlighted perks fit different combat priorities; they are options, not a tested tier list:
- Armor break and control: Breaking Point and Numbing Blow give unarmed attacks chances to break armor or stun.
- Dash offense and defense: Untouchable Motion, Open Path, and Dash of Violence support longer invincibility frames, reduced incoming damage after a dash, and bonus unarmed damage for three seconds after a dash.
- Sustained combos: Hardening Resolve and Unbroken Flow reduce damage taken and stamina costs as the hit chain grows.
- Stamina pressure: Sapping Strikes drains some of the damage dealt from an enemy’s stamina.
- Parrying: Patient Hand widens the unarmed parry window.
The announcement also gives examples of fistfighting weapons with different effects: Unburdened Hands restores stamina on kills and successful parries; Unbroken Motion builds critical-hit chance with consecutive hits; Patient Grasp returns stamina based on physical damage. These illustrate possible item synergies, not required gear for every unarmed character.

Flexible choices for a new character
If you have not settled on a late-game build, keep early investments concentrated: choose one main damage source, then take a defense or resource tool that helps with your current difficulties. Lockpicking can be worthwhile if you value exploration and loot, but it is not essential for a combat-focused character. General advice for this approach comes from a guide dated May 2026, before the 1.30 unarmed overhaul.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence can—and cannot—rank
The current official update names unarmed abilities and explains the 1.30 changes. General secondary guidance offers playstyle suggestions, while a community skill reference cautions that some effects were not fully tested. None of these sources establishes comparative damage, survivability, or clear-speed results across builds. Treat the options above as ways to shape a character around a preferred rhythm, not as proof that one perk is strongest for everyone.
