What Death Caller does
Death Caller is one of the Mage specializations in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. BioWare describes it as death- and life-draining magic: “Know the darkness. Drain life from enemies and create spells that carry the essence of death itself.” BioWare’s combat overview also distinguishes the other Mage specializations: Evoker focuses on freezing and cold effects, while Spellblade leans toward close-range, lightning-oriented combat. Mage spells can attack at range or up close and include fire, ice, electricity, and crushing effects.
Core skills for a Death Caller build
Corrupted Ground: sustained area damage
Make Corrupted Ground a central ability if you want to pressure enemies in an area over time. It is one of the core picks in Game8’s Death Caller build guide.
Spirit Bomb: pair with the area-focused plan
Use Spirit Bomb alongside Corrupted Ground as part of the build’s area-and-duration focus. The guide includes it in its Death Caller progression and core play loop; the combination is a published approach, not a required pairing.

Frost Nova: optional control
Frost Nova is a useful option when you want to control enemies and help keep them in a hazardous area. It comes from third-party Mage build guidance rather than BioWare’s description of Death Caller, so treat it as a complementary choice rather than a specialization requirement.
Choose upgrades to support your loadout
Spend skill points on upgrades that strengthen the abilities you actually use. If Corrupted Ground and Spirit Bomb are the center of your setup, favor relevant area and duration effects; if Frost Nova is important to your play, support that control role. Game8’s guide presents a Cold-and-Necrotic late-game approach, but that is one build strategy, not a universal damage-type rule. No verified patch-current, optimal node-by-node sequence is established, so prioritize the abilities and effects that fit your current encounters.

Adapt to enemy weaknesses and resistances
Enemy types in the game have distinct weaknesses and resistances, according to EA’s combat basics guide. Check the enemies you are facing and shift your damage or control options when your preferred damage type is resisted. A Cold-and-Necrotic setup can work as a build direction, but it should not take precedence over an encounter’s resistance profile.
Change skills and respec as you experiment
You are not locked into one ability setup or skill tree. EA says abilities can be swapped outside combat, and players can respec individual skill nodes or the full tree. Try the core combination, then adjust as you unlock more abilities, acquire equipment, or encounter enemies that call for a different damage or control mix. EA’s launch gameplay features article explains those options.
