For most new characters, spend the first points in Strength, take Miner 69’er early, add one point to your main melee skill, then cover stamina, food, and basic crafting. Master Chef rank 1, Rule 1: Cardio, Pain Tolerance, and Advanced Engineering are strong early support choices. Solo players can shift toward Agility, while spear users may prefer Perception. Perk names, costs, and effects can change between game versions, so confirm the current in-game description before buying a rank.
The short answer: a reliable first-week order
There is no single skill order that wins every save. Your weapon drops, whether you play alone, and how much mining or building you do all matter. A practical beginner route is to secure one dependable damage option, remove early stamina problems, and then buy the perks that make food, crafting, and resources less punishing.

This order is a starting framework, not a promise that every save should look identical. A community discussion calls Strength essential early because Miner 69’er improves the speed of breaking blocks and reduces the stamina burden of repeated mining. Miner 69’er solves two early problems
Mining and demolition consume time and stamina. Miner 69’er is repeatedly recommended in community discussions because it addresses both: blocks break faster and the work costs less stamina. That matters before your character has a deep food supply, strong armor, or a large reserve of healing items. Faster work also shortens the period during which you are exposed outside a secure base.

Buy the first available rank when your character begins gathering stone, clay, ore, or building materials regularly. If you are spending the opening days scavenging and never touching a mine, delay the next rank rather than automatically putting every point into it. The first point has the clearest practical role; later ranks should compete with combat and survival needs instead of being treated as mandatory.
Strength supports forgiving beginner weapons
Bamboo Gaming favors Strength for beginners partly because clubs are forgiving and shotguns are powerful. That does not mean you must use either weapon. It means Strength offers a practical fallback when loot does not provide the exact weapon you wanted. A close-range weapon also gives you a way to conserve ammunition while clearing ordinary threats, provided you manage stamina and do not fight in an open area with no escape route.
When not to start with Strength
- You are playing a coordinated group in which another character has already claimed mining and heavy close-range combat.
- You are intentionally building around spears and want the reach and avoidance associated with Perception.
- You are a solo player who consistently dies while escaping rather than while gathering resources; an Agility-first approach may address that immediate risk better.
Those are reasons to alter the order, not proof that Strength is weak. The recommendation is strongest for a new or independent character who must gather, fight, and build without help.
Put at least one point into a melee option
Several community posts argue that a melee skill deserves at least a couple of early points because stamina costs otherwise leave a player in a dangerous position. The precise number of points depends on the current version and the weapon you find, so read the in-game rank text rather than copying an old breakpoint.
Use the first melee point when close combat is part of your normal plan, not only during emergencies. Practice fighting from a position where you can retreat, and stop attacking before your stamina bar becomes the thing that kills you. A melee perk is valuable not because it makes every encounter safe, but because it gives ordinary attacks a sustainable cost while ammunition and food are still scarce.
If you choose a ranged-first character, keep one emergency melee weapon anyway. You can postpone additional melee ranks, but having no close-range answer at all makes a missed shot, a jammed escape route, or a depleted ammunition stack much more dangerous.

Choose the survival support that matches your failure mode
Rule 1: Cardio for movement and stamina pressure
Rule 1: Cardio appears on Bamboo Gaming’s early-pick list. It is the natural choice when you lose fights while running, sprinting, or trying to create distance. Select it before a resource perk if your recurring problem is arriving at an encounter already exhausted or being unable to escape after a stamina-intensive attack.

Pain Tolerance is another early recommendation. It belongs higher in your order when mistakes are unavoidable: cramped interiors, surprise attacks, or a melee build that trades blows. It is a defensive buffer, not a license to stand still and absorb damage. Keep improving positioning and healing even after buying it.
Fortitude as an optional broad survival investment
One community player describes Fortitude as an early must-have for damage and temperature resistance, along with more crops and meat. That is a strong argument for Fortitude when your save involves farming, hunting, or harsh temperature management. Because the claim comes from an individual community player rather than an official perk table, treat it as a playstyle option rather than a universal first purchase.
Use a simple test: if your deaths come from running out of stamina, choose Cardio; if they come from taking too much damage, choose Pain Tolerance; if food production, hunting, and temperature are your constant constraints, consider Fortitude.
Food: why Master Chef rank 1 can come before convenience perks
A long-time community player says Master Chef rank 1 is a must-have and the first purchase in every save because it makes early food easier. Food problems compound: hunger reduces your ability to work and fight, while searching for meals consumes time that could have gone to shelter or exploration. A first-rank cooking investment can therefore be more valuable than a general inventory or loot perk during the opening stretch.

Advanced Engineering and the first Forge
A community post describes Advanced Engineering rank 1 as the Forge unlock and calls it useful from the beginning through the end of the game. That makes it a high-value early purchase for a self-sufficient builder, but its timing is team-dependent. If another player already provides the Forge, your own point may produce less immediate value than combat or survival.
Before committing, check the current description in your version. Perk names, prerequisites, and unlocks can change. If rank 1 still provides the Forge recipe in your build, buy it when you are ready to use the Forge rather than unlocking it so early that the point sits idle while you are still struggling for food and stamina.
Resource perks after immediate survival is covered
Mother Lode
Mother Lode appears on Bamboo Gaming’s early-survival list. It fits a character whose routine includes mining and whose bottleneck is the amount of material returned from each trip. Miner 69’er improves the pace and stamina cost of breaking blocks; Mother Lode addresses the resource yield side of that work. In a short first week, take the mining-speed benefit first unless your specific problem is clearly insufficient output rather than slow extraction.
Salvage Operations
Salvage Operations is another listed early pick. Choose it when salvaging is a major part of your route and you are repeatedly dismantling objects for useful materials. Delay it if you are still losing fights or missing meals: resource efficiency cannot compensate for a character who cannot safely reach the loot.
Why Pack Mule and Lucky Looter can wait
Bamboo Gaming places Pack Mule, Lucky Looter, cooking, farming, and trader perks later, once normal zombie fights are under control. That sequencing reflects opportunity cost. Carry capacity and loot quality feel excellent when your character can already clear rooms and return safely, but they do not replace a weapon plan, stamina management, or a reliable food supply.

One community player reports using a Perception-based spear approach to avoid being hit early. That is a useful example of changing the order around a weapon’s reach and your preferred defensive pattern. It is not evidence that Perception is universally stronger than Strength.

A practical seven-day spending plan
First points: establish a way to fight and work
- Inspect the skills screen and identify the weapon you can realistically support with current loot.
- Take the first Strength or Miner 69’er investment if mining and building are part of your immediate routine.
- Buy one rank in the melee or main-weapon perk that matches your actual weapon, rather than a weapon you hope to find later.
- Keep one point available if you are unsure; early flexibility is safer than spending on a perk whose requirements you cannot meet.
Next points: remove the problem killing you most often
- Choose Rule 1: Cardio if exhaustion and failed escapes are the recurring issue.
- Choose Pain Tolerance if incoming damage is the recurring issue.
- Choose Master Chef rank 1 if meals are unreliable.
- Choose Fortitude if farming, meat, crops, or temperature management dominate your day.
Middle of the week: unlock self-sufficiency
When food and ordinary encounters are stable, evaluate Advanced Engineering rank 1. If its current description still unlocks the Forge and you are responsible for crafting, it is a sensible next purchase. A group should coordinate this point so multiple characters do not pay for the same function before other roles are covered.
End of the first week: specialize
Only after the character can fight, retreat, eat, and perform the main gathering task should you add Mother Lode, Salvage Operations, or a second wave of combat ranks. Solo players can then lean into Agility if movement and escape remain their biggest advantage. Players who already have secure combat can begin buying Pack Mule, Lucky Looter, cooking, farming, or trader-related options.

Perk effects and names are not permanently fixed. The available evidence does not provide a verified current perk table or official patch-by-patch values, so an old guide may show different costs, prerequisites, or unlocks. Before spending a point:
- Open the character’s skills or perks screen in your installed version.
- Read the full rank description, including prerequisites and the exact weapon, crafting, stamina, or resource effect.
- Confirm that the perk applies to the item or activity you actually use; similarly named skills are not interchangeable.
- Check whether a rank unlocks a recipe, changes a percentage, or merely improves an existing action.
- Spend the point only after comparing that immediate benefit with the survival problem you are currently experiencing.
This check matters especially for Advanced Engineering, Master Chef, and weapon-specific perks, because their usefulness depends on the current unlock path rather than on a name remembered from an earlier release.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying convenience before survival
Pack Mule and Lucky Looter are attractive, but an overloaded character who cannot clear a room or escape a chase gains little from carrying more. Move those perks later if your first week contains repeated combat deaths.

Investing one point in several unrelated weapon families can leave all of them mediocre. Pick the weapon that matches your current loot and intended range, then add a small emergency melee investment if necessary.

Mining until stamina is empty
Miner 69’er reduces the problem; it does not remove the need to manage stamina. Stop before exhaustion, keep an escape route, and avoid starting a fight immediately after a long mining session.
Unlocking the Forge without a plan to use it
Advanced Engineering rank 1 is valuable when it provides the Forge you need. If your group already has one or your immediate bottleneck is food, delay the duplicate investment and fill the missing role first.
Treating a community recommendation as a patch guarantee
Steam discussions and third-party guides are useful for identifying patterns, but they do not replace the description in your current build. Recheck every important effect after a major update or when a familiar perk behaves differently.

What “best” means for your character
The best first skill is the one that removes the constraint you encounter every day. For an independent beginner, that is usually Strength with Miner 69’er, backed by a melee point. For a character dying while running, Cardio is more urgent. For a character dying after taking hits, Pain Tolerance is more urgent. For a food-starved or crafting-focused character, Master Chef or Advanced Engineering can move ahead of a second combat rank.
Community players explicitly recommend trying several playthroughs to discover what works. Use the first week to identify whether your save is limited by stamina, damage, food, crafting, mining speed, or escape routes. Then let that observation—not a fixed internet ranking—determine the next point.
