For a new SkyFactory 4 world, use a Forge-based 1.12.2 server, run it with 64-bit Java 8, and set level-type=topography together with generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"} before the first world generation. Keep max-tick-time=60000 enabled during normal play. Start a small server with about 4 GB of Java heap, then adjust from measured heap use, CPU load and tick time rather than treating that figure as a guarantee.

Changing the generation lines after a world already exists does not convert that save. Stop the server, back up the world, and create a new save (or restore a compatible backup). A vanilla Minecraft server will not load SkyFactory’s mods, scripts or advancements, so the complete modded server pack is a prerequisite.

Recommended baseline server.properties

These are the pack-specific values that matter most when creating a SkyFactory 4 world:

Property Value Use it when What it does
level-type topography Creating a new world Selects the Topography world generator used by the pack.
generator-settings {"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"} Creating a new world Selects the Sky Factory 4 preset instead of a generic Topography preset.
max-tick-time 60000 Normal operation Keeps the server watchdog active, with a 60,000-millisecond safety limit for a server tick.

Save the file while the server is stopped. Check the spelling, capitalization and punctuation of both world-generation values; the generator-settings value is JSON embedded inside a properties file, so its quotation marks and braces are significant.

SkyFactory 4 includes more than 30 world types according to the DarkPacks project description. The preset above is the standard Sky Factory 4 experience, not a request to use one of the pack’s other available types.

Install the correct server stack first

SkyFactory 4 was built for Minecraft 1.12.2 and its Forge ecosystem. The server must therefore be a Forge/modded installation containing the complete SkyFactory server files, not a plain vanilla server JAR with a few client mods copied into a folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the installation must contain

  • A Forge server compatible with Minecraft 1.12.2.
  • The same SkyFactory 4 build, mods, configuration files and scripts expected by the clients.
  • A 64-bit Java 8 runtime where available.
  • A writable server directory for the world, logs, configuration and backups.

Start the server once using the supplied launch method so that it can create its initial files, stop it cleanly, and then edit server.properties. Do not mix a modern Java runtime or a newer Forge installation into this legacy pack without testing the complete combination. Advice written for Minecraft versions that require Java 17 or Java 21 does not apply automatically to SkyFactory 4.

Confirm Java before troubleshooting anything else

Run java -version from the same account and environment that launches the server. Confirm that it reports a 64-bit Java 8 build. On a host with several Java installations, checking Java in an interactive shell is not enough if the service or control panel launches a different executable; verify the version in the actual launch environment and inspect the server log at startup.

Keep every client on the same SkyFactory build as the server. A client/server mismatch can look like a configuration problem even when the world-generation settings are correct.

Create the SkyFactory world correctly

World-generation properties are read when a save is created. Follow this sequence for a clean installation:

  1. Stop the server and make a copy of the entire server directory, especially any existing world folder.
  2. Open server.properties in a plain-text editor.
  3. Set level-type=topography.
  4. Set generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}.
  5. Save the file without changing the property names or JSON punctuation.
  6. If a previous default world exists, either rename the world directory and change level-name to a new name, or remove the old save only after verifying the backup.
  7. Start the Forge server and wait for world generation to finish before allowing players to connect.

The safest approach is to use a new level-name for testing. Once the server creates a world with the intended islands and starting setup, stop it and restore your preferred operational name if necessary.

Why the server creates a normal world

There are three common causes:

  • The save already existed. Editing level-type and generator-settings does not regenerate terrain inside an existing save. Minecraft keeps using the generator information recorded when that world was created.
  • The server is vanilla. A vanilla JAR does not contain Topography or the SkyFactory mods, so it cannot provide the pack’s world types, recipes or advancements.
  • The properties were malformed or edited after startup. A typo in the key, a damaged JSON value, or editing the file while the server is running can leave the old settings in effect.

To recover, stop the server, preserve the old save as a backup, correct the properties, and generate a fresh world with a new name. The official SkyFactory issue discussion confirms that a properly configured modded server can expose the pack’s available world types through server.properties; it is not evidence that a vanilla server can load them.

Java and memory: practical starting points

There is no official DarkPacks RAM number that guarantees good performance for every SkyFactory 4 server. The pack’s needs change with the number of players, loaded chunks, automation, entities, dimensions and the overhead of the operating system and JVM.

Use 4 GB as a starting point, not a promise

A hosting guide uses 4 GB as a starting recommendation for a small group. Begin there if your machine has sufficient physical memory, then observe actual heap use and pauses. Leave headroom for the operating system, file cache and other services; allocating all host RAM to Java can make the machine less responsive and can worsen disk and network behavior.

A separate Docker example uses a 2048 MB limit. That is a deployment example, not a universal SkyFactory requirement and not proof that 2 GB is adequate for your world. Treat both figures as context for sizing, not as a fixed rule.

Observation Likely interpretation Action
Heap remains comfortably below its limit and ticks stay stable Memory is probably not the immediate bottleneck Leave the allocation alone and investigate CPU, chunks or entities if lag persists.
Heap repeatedly reaches the limit with long garbage-collection pauses The server may need more heap or fewer loaded objects Increase memory only if the host has headroom; also reduce chunk loaders, entities and unnecessary dimensions.
Heap looks healthy but one area causes timeouts A chunk, machine or farm is overloading the main thread Profile and clean up the offending area; adding RAM alone will not fix a single overloaded tick.
CPU is saturated while memory is available World simulation, automation or entity processing is the constraint Find the high-cost farm or machine, reduce its work rate, and limit simultaneously loaded chunks.

Why more RAM can fail to help

SkyFactory factories can create large numbers of item entities, mobs, tile entities and chunk-loading requests. Minecraft 1.12.2 still performs much of its world ticking on a main server thread. If one chunk contains an unbounded item spill or an especially expensive machine network, giving Java more memory does not make that tick execute faster. Measure tick time and CPU alongside heap use.

Keep watchdog protection enabled

Use max-tick-time=60000 during ordinary service. The value is the normal safety setting in the DarkPacks recovery discussion: if a tick hangs for too long, the watchdog can stop the server instead of leaving a process that appears alive but cannot serve players.

Emergency recovery for an overloaded chunk

If a known chunk contains so many dropped items that the server cannot remain online long enough to clean it, the issue discussion describes a temporary recovery sequence:

  1. Stop the server and make a current backup of the world.
  2. Temporarily set max-tick-time=-1 so the watchdog does not terminate the process while you enter the affected area.
  3. Start the server, connect with an operator account, and load the problematic area only long enough to remove the excessive entities. The documented example uses /kill @e[type=item]; this targets dropped item entities, so use it only when you understand what items will be lost.
  4. Stop the server after cleanup.
  5. Restore max-tick-time=60000 before returning the server to normal players.
  6. Repair or throttle the farm, machine or transport system that created the spill, then monitor the area.

-1 is an emergency diagnostic and recovery value, not a performance setting. Leaving watchdog protection disabled can turn a recoverable overload into an unresponsive server and removes an important failure signal.

Performance tuning that server.properties cannot do

Most persistent SkyFactory lag is caused by what the world is simulating rather than by a single property. Work through these checks before changing watchdog behavior:

  • Find the location. Ask whether every player lags or only players near one base, farm or dimension. A location-specific problem points toward chunks, tile entities or item entities.
  • Check loaded chunks. Chunk loaders, permanently loaded spawn areas and players spread across dimensions multiply the amount of work performed each tick. Remove loaders that are not needed and avoid keeping large industrial areas active around the clock.
  • Inspect entities. Dropped items, animals, mobs and moving transport systems can accumulate out of sight. Clean them up and add collection, voiding or rate limits where appropriate.
  • Audit automation. A farm that produces faster than its storage or transport network can consume will eventually create a backlog. Slow the producer, add bounded storage, or provide a controlled disposal path.
  • Watch CPU and tick time. A memory graph alone cannot show a main-thread bottleneck. Use the server console, operating-system metrics and any profiling tools that are compatible with your Forge build.
  • Check disk and network behavior. Full disks, slow storage, frequent backups during peak play, packet loss and high latency can resemble tick lag. Separate these symptoms before changing Java settings.

Do not apply JVM flags copied from a different Minecraft version without testing. The official issue tracker records Aikar’s flags in one Java 8 environment, but that report is not a universal prescription for every host, launcher or Forge build.

Useful general properties and what not to change blindly

The three lines above are the pack-specific baseline. Other properties should reflect your server’s access and gameplay policy:

  • Authentication: keep online authentication enabled for an Internet-facing server unless you have a controlled, private network and understand the security consequences of changing it.
  • Commands and permissions: grant operator status only to trusted administrators. Use the least privilege needed for emergency cleanup.
  • Difficulty and game rules: choose them for the group; they do not select the SkyFactory generator.
  • View distance: lower it if CPU load and simultaneous exploration are excessive, then test whether exploration and automation remain playable. There is no single best value for every hardware and player count.
  • Spawn protection and flight behavior: change them only when your server’s permissions and mod setup require it. Record each change so a later update can be reproduced.

Minecraft 1.12.2 does not have the newer simulation-distance property used by later releases. Do not paste a modern server.properties template into a SkyFactory 4 installation and assume every key is supported.

Backups and SkyFactory updates

Back up before changing the pack version, Forge build, Java runtime or world-generation settings. At minimum, copy the world save, server.properties, configuration files, scripts and mods. Keep one copy away from the live server so a failed update or disk problem cannot destroy both copies.

The DarkPacks 4.2.4 changelog warns that tomb behavior changed. Administrators are told to open old graves before updating and to use backups. In practice, stop the server, copy the save, have players open and empty old graves as directed by the release notes, and only then perform the update. Test the updated copy before replacing the production save.

Safe update sequence

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Copy the world, properties, configs, scripts and mods; label the backup with the current pack version and date.
  3. Read the target version’s changelog for world, tomb, recipe or migration warnings.
  4. Apply the update to a separate test directory or a duplicate save first.
  5. Start the test server with the same Java 8 baseline and inspect the log for missing mods, configuration errors and world-load warnings.
  6. Have an administrator verify key bases, inventories, dimensions and automation.
  7. Promote the tested files to production only after the checks pass.

Self-hosting versus managed SkyFactory 4 hosting

Both approaches can work. The right choice depends less on a headline RAM number than on whether you can maintain a legacy Java and Forge stack and recover a damaged chunk yourself.

Decision axis Self-hosted server Managed hosting
Compatibility control You choose the Java 8 runtime, Forge build and exact SkyFactory files. Convenient when the provider explicitly supports Minecraft 1.12.2, Java 8 and your exact pack build; verify this before paying.
Operational burden You handle installation, port forwarding, updates, monitoring, backups and recovery. The provider may supply a panel and basic maintenance, but you still need to validate pack files and update procedures.
Resources You control the physical CPU, RAM, storage and network, subject to your hardware and connection. Check guaranteed or shared CPU, allocated RAM, storage limits and how oversubscription is handled.
Recovery access Direct console and filesystem access make it possible to clean a bad chunk and restore any backup you hold. Confirm console access, file access, backup frequency, retention and whether you can download a complete world backup.
Network reachability You are responsible for public addressing, firewall rules, port exposure, latency and denial-of-service mitigation. Ask about location, latency, network protection and the process for changing the server address or port.

Before selecting a managed service, ask for current confirmation of 1.12.2 Forge and Java 8 support, the exact SkyFactory build they install, available backup controls, resource limits and the way support handles a world that will not tick. Legacy-pack support can change as providers retire older Java images or mod loaders.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server starts, but players see a vanilla world

  1. Stop the server and verify that it is launching Forge, not a vanilla JAR.
  2. Confirm the complete server pack, configs and scripts are present.
  3. Check that level-type and generator-settings exactly match the baseline values.
  4. Rename the existing world or change level-name so the corrected settings are used for a new save.
  5. Start again and inspect the log for Topography or missing-mod errors.

Players time out whenever they approach one base

Back up first, then suspect a bad chunk, item spill or machine network in that area. Use console and profiling data to identify the cause. If the server cannot stay alive long enough to enter, follow the temporary max-tick-time=-1 cleanup procedure, remove the offending entities, restore 60000, and repair the farm or machine.

The server crashes after increasing memory

More heap does not guarantee a fix. Check the crash report and startup log for Java, Forge or mod errors, confirm that the selected Java version is 8, and make sure the host still has operating-system headroom. Revert untested JVM flags and return to the last known-good launch configuration before changing one variable at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clients cannot join after an update

Compare the client and server SkyFactory build, Forge version, mods and configuration. A successful server start does not prove that every client has the same pack files. Restore the pre-update backup if the update changed world data or tomb behavior unexpectedly.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Forge 1.12.2 and the complete SkyFactory 4 server pack are installed.
  • All clients use the same pack build as the server.
  • java -version confirms a 64-bit Java 8 runtime in the actual launch environment.
  • level-type=topography is present before the new world is generated.
  • generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"} is present and correctly quoted.
  • The old save is backed up before any regeneration or update.
  • A small server starts with roughly 4 GB as an initial heap target only when the host has enough spare memory.
  • max-tick-time=60000 is restored for normal service.
  • Backups include the world, properties, configs, scripts and mods.
  • CPU, heap use, garbage-collection pauses and tick time are monitored during a realistic play session.

These settings give SkyFactory 4 the correct 1.12.2 world generator and a safe operational baseline. Performance thereafter depends on the factory you build, the chunks you keep loaded and the resources available to the host, so measure those factors before changing the watchdog or assigning progressively more memory.
