There is no official universal “best” solo loadout in The Outlast Trials. The strongest setup depends on the Trial, its modifiers and the problem you want your gear to solve. A practical starting point is to pick a Rig for your biggest threat, then choose Amps for your main constraint: survival, carrying capacity, obstacles or cooldowns.
That approach follows documented item effects, not a controlled ranking of builds. Red Barrels’ advice to “equip the best loadout for each Trial” is useful, but its detailed Rig and Amp descriptions date to the March 2024 v1.0 update; check current in-game descriptions for exact behavior.

How to choose a solo loadout
Think of a loadout as a response to a Trial rather than a fixed character build. Compare each choice on four practical axes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Survival buffer: Does it help you recover from a mistake or escape immediate danger?
- Objective speed: Does it remove an obstacle or help you complete the task more efficiently?
- Information and stealth: Does it help you locate threats or avoid them?
- Resource and cooldown economy: Does it increase carrying capacity or help you reuse a Rig?
Trial conditions and Variators can change which of those matters most. For solo play, also account for the fact that you cannot rely on a teammate to rescue or support you.
#1 Best Overall
Which Rig is best for solo?
Choose the Rig that addresses the main risk or bottleneck in the Trial. Red Barrels’ March 2024 v1.0 notes describe these relevant options; later balance changes may affect their current behavior, so verify the in-game descriptions.
| Rig | Consider it when… | Solo trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stun | You want an emergency response to danger. | The v1.0 notes describe it as having a faster cooldown, reduced to 120 seconds in that update. That figure is from March 2024, not a guarantee of the current cooldown. |
| X-Ray | Scouting or locating threats is more valuable than a direct recovery option. | The same notes say it became usable from hiding spots. Check the current in-game description for its present behavior. |
| Heal | You want a self-care option during a run. | The v1.0 notes say it can be used while hiding. It is not categorically better than Stun or X-Ray; its value depends on what the Trial demands. |
These documented effects do not establish a solo tier list, win-rate advantage or universally strongest Rig. Jammer’s instant Electric Disruption effect on Imposters, mentioned in Red Barrels’ July 2026 notes, applies to Invasion; it should not be treated as a benefit for solo PvE Trials.
Which Amps should you use solo?
Pick Amps according to the specific constraint you expect to face. The effects below are described in the March 2024 v1.0 notes, and current in-game descriptions are the best check for later changes.
- Backpack: Adds an inventory slot. Consider it when carrying more items better suits the Trial.
- Smash: Breaks doors or planks in one strike. It can help when those obstacles slow your route, but the faster path is only useful if it serves the objective.
- Self Revive: Permits one resurrection per Trial. It provides a recovery option, but should not be mistaken for unlimited respawns.
- Hide and Restore: Speeds Rig cooldown recovery from hiding spots. Consider it if your run makes regular use of hiding and Rig availability is a constraint.
These are utility choices, not a proven ranked set. Use the Amp slots and unlocks available to your character, and prefer the effect that solves the run’s most likely problem.
Recommended solo presets by situation
These are mechanics-based starting points, not tested or officially ranked builds. Use them to make a deliberate choice, then adapt to the Trial.
General safety
Consider Stun for a quick response to danger and Self Revive as a recovery-oriented Amp, if it is available among your choices. Stun’s cooldown reduction and Self Revive’s once-per-Trial description come from the v1.0 notes; neither establishes this combination as the best build.

Exploration and flexibility
Consider X-Ray when threat scouting from concealment is useful, and pair it with Backpack if an extra inventory slot addresses the Trial’s demands. This favors information and carrying capacity over a direct obstacle-clearing effect.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Consider Smash when doors and planks are likely to interrupt your route. Its documented one-strike effect can reduce that particular friction; whether it is worth an Amp slot depends on the objective and the path you take.
Frequent Rig use
Consider Hide and Restore if you expect to use hiding spots and want faster Rig cooldown recovery. This is most relevant when your plan relies on having the Rig available repeatedly.
Recovery-focused play
Heal is worth considering if using it from a hiding spot fits your approach. Choose it for that self-care function rather than assuming it is stronger than a threat-control or scouting Rig.

Red Barrels’ July 14, 2026 Season 7 update introduced Rig customization and up to three saved loadouts that you can switch between before starting a Trial. The September 8, 2026 update says player loadouts are displayed in the pause menu. Save distinct approaches—for example, one for general safety, one for exploration and one for obstacle-heavy objectives—then choose before launch based on the Trial’s conditions.
Do not assume every solo mode follows ordinary Trial rules. Red Barrels’ July 2026 notes describe a Hardcore weekly Escalation theme with no respawns in solo play, and persistent maximum-health loss in higher Endless Escalation Trials. Those are mode-specific conditions, so read the active mode and modifiers before carrying an ordinary Trial preset into an Escalation run.
What the latest update notes do—and do not—confirm
The September 17, 2026 hotfix addressed reported bugs and crashes without announcing a Rig or Amp balance change. That does not prove no balance changes occurred elsewhere or that every v1.0 effect remains unchanged: the detailed effects cited here are from March 2024, and later patches may have altered them. For exact current values, use the in-game descriptions and newer official notes where available.
The Chemical Leak event mentioned in the September 2026 update ran until October 6, 2026; it is not an active event as of October 7, 2026. Its status does not change the general loadout advice above.
