Older hosting guides that recommend BepInEx or claim server mods are impossible may describe an earlier game or loader state.

What you need to know before modding a dedicated server
Sons of the Forest mod support is not one universal switch. A mod can run on a player’s client, on a dedicated server, or on both. The installation that works for a single-player game is not automatically suitable for a server, and a mod that loads successfully for the host may still cause connection failures for other players.

- Windows dedicated server: extract RedLoader into the folder that contains
SonsOfTheForestDS.exe. - Linux dedicated server: extract it into the server folder, set
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=version=n,b, and start the server throughwine64. A separately maintained Docker image is also available for operators who prefer containers. - Players: install the same RedLoader-compatible mods and versions when a mod page says it is required on clients. Some mods are server-only; others need to be present for everyone.
Before opening the server to a group, test the complete installation privately. This catches loader errors, missing dependencies, incompatible versions and save problems while recovery is easy.
RedLoader, RedManager and older loader advice
Why RedLoader is the starting point
The current RedLoader README describes dedicated servers as working out of the box after the files are extracted into the correct server directory. That is the clearest direct guidance for the present setup. Most mods follow the game’s current patch, so update the Steam game before installing the loader or a mod.
Some older articles say that Sons of the Forest server mods are client-only, unstable or dependent on BepInEx. Guides from hosting companies and community sites can remain indexed for years after the loader ecosystem changes. Treat those articles as historical context rather than a definitive compatibility statement. The mod’s own current page and RedLoader documentation take priority.
RedManager versus manual installation

Whichever method you use, keep a record of the loader version, mod versions and configuration files. That record makes rollback much faster when a game update arrives.
Back up the game and save before changing anything
Make a copy of the dedicated server’s save data and the game folder before adding RedLoader. A mod can alter world state, inventories or building data; removing the mod does not necessarily undo those changes. Keep the untouched backup outside the live server directory so an update or reinstall cannot overwrite it.

- Stop the server cleanly before copying files.
- Back up every active world, not just the world currently loaded by the administrator.
- Save a copy of configuration files and launch scripts.
- Use a separate test world for experimental mods.
Updating the Steam game first is important because RedLoader and many mods track the latest game patch. If you install a loader against an old executable and then update, the server may fail before it reaches the world-selection stage.
Install RedLoader on a Windows dedicated server
- Stop the server. Do not copy loader files while
SonsOfTheForestDS.exeis running. - Update the game in Steam. Confirm that the dedicated-server files and the client are on the same current game build.
- Download RedLoader from its official GitHub release or install it through RedManager.
- Open the server directory containing
SonsOfTheForestDS.exe. This is the dedicated-server folder, not a random folder used for Steam downloads. - Extract the RedLoader archive directly into that directory. Do not leave the files inside an extra nested folder such as
RedLoader.
edloader-files - Launch the server once. The first run creates the
_RedLoader,ModsandLibsfolders used by the loader. - Stop the server and install a compatible mod into the location specified by its page. Install required libraries in
Libswhen the author provides them separately. - Start the server again and inspect the console or log. Confirm that RedLoader initializes and that the mod reports a successful load before inviting players.
If the server starts normally without mods but fails after a particular file is added, remove that mod from the test installation, restore the backup if the world was opened with it, and check the mod page for a dedicated-server requirement or dependency.

Install RedLoader on Linux with Wine
The documented Linux approach runs the Windows dedicated-server executable through Wine. It is not the same as installing a native Linux plugin.
- Update the server files and make a backup of the save and installation.
- Extract RedLoader into the directory containing
SonsOfTheForestDS.exe. - Set the Wine DLL override exactly as documented:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=version=n,b. - Run the server through
wine64, preserving the environment variable for the process. A typical launch pattern isWINEDLLOVERRIDES=version=n,b wine64 SonsOfTheForestDS.exe; adapt the executable path and existing server arguments to your installation. - Allow the first launch to create
_RedLoader,ModsandLibs, then stop the process cleanly. - Install and test one mod at a time, checking file permissions and the server log after every change.
Operators who do not want to maintain Wine prefixes can use the separately maintained Docker image for the server. Container deployments still need persistent volumes for the save, configuration and mod directories; otherwise a recreated container can appear to erase the world.

Read the mod page before downloading
Use the mod listings on sotf-mods.com and read the individual page, not only a popularity list. Look for three specific statements:

- Dedicated-server support: the author explicitly says the mod works on a dedicated server.
- Placement: server-only, client-only or both server and client.
- Dependencies and version: required libraries, RedLoader version and the game patch for which the release was built.
A listing that merely says “multiplayer” is not enough evidence that a headless dedicated server is supported. If the page is silent, assume the mod needs testing and do not install it on a production world first.
Synchronize the player installations
When a mod requires clients, every player should use the same mod release and the same dependency versions. Keep a small manifest containing the file name, version and whether it belongs on the server, all clients or only the host. A player joining with a different version may see a rejected connection, missing features, a desynchronized world or a crash.
There are exceptions. A mod author may state that only the host needs the file, or that the mod is entirely server-side. Follow that explicit instruction instead of copying every file to every machine. Do not infer the placement from the mod’s name.
Promising Sons of the Forest mods to evaluate
“Best” depends on whether you need administration, building, traversal, aiming or quality-of-life improvements. The items below are recurring candidates in current and older lists, not a guarantee that every release is compatible with your current patch. Verify the individual page before installation.

The older lists that mention Simple Zoom, Faster Inventory Panning, Let There Be Light, Environment Restoration and SOTF Autosave are roughly two to three years old. Their inclusion is a starting point for investigation, not proof that the current RedLoader release supports them. The same caution applies to any popularity ordering: a list of popular mods is not a verified ranking of the safest or best-maintained releases.

Choose mods by server role, not by download count
For an administrator-focused server
Start with a dedicated-server mod such as DedicatedSuperuser, then add an admin menu only after confirming command permissions and save behavior. Keep administrative tools limited to trusted operators. A menu with hundreds of commands can include destructive actions, teleportation, item changes or world edits that are difficult to reverse.
For a building-focused cooperative world
Evaluate Enable Building in Caves and BuildShare on a copied save. Decide in advance whether all players want the altered building rules. Test a complete build cycle: place an object, leave and rejoin, let another player edit it, restart the server and confirm the structure remains intact.
For movement and combat quality of life
InfiniteZipline, Aim Assist and Simple Zoom can make travel or combat more comfortable, but they may be client-side. Establish whether the group considers the change acceptable, then distribute an exact version manifest so one player is not using a different mechanic from everyone else.
For a lightly modified server
Install one low-impact mod, such as a confirmed client-only interface improvement, and leave world-changing systems alone. This is the easiest profile to maintain after game patches and the simplest to troubleshoot when a player cannot connect.

- Create a disposable test world or restore a copy of the latest backup.
- Install only RedLoader. Start the server, connect, save, disconnect and restart. This establishes a clean baseline.
- Add one mod. Do not install a bundle of untested files; otherwise you will not know which one caused a failure.
- Test the mod’s stated feature. For a building mod, place and save a structure. For an admin tool, run a harmless command. For a client feature, connect from a second account.
- Restart the server. A mod that works during one process can still fail to persist data or initialize after a restart.
- Test with the intended player mix. Include a client without the mod when the author says it is optional, and a correctly matched client when the author requires it.
- Record the result. Note the game build, RedLoader version, mod version, placement and any launch arguments.
Only move the tested files to the production server after the world loads, players can join, the feature works and a restart preserves the expected state.

Troubleshoot common failures
The server never starts
- Confirm RedLoader was extracted beside
SonsOfTheForestDS.exe, not one directory above or inside an extra archive folder. - Remove the newest mod and start with RedLoader alone.
- Check that the Steam game was updated before the loader was installed.
- On Linux, verify the exact
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=version=n,bsetting and that the process is launched withwine64. - Restore the backed-up game folder if a partial extraction overwrote files.
Players are rejected or see different behavior
- Compare every required client’s mod file and version against the server manifest.
- Check whether the author requires the mod on all clients, only the host or only the server.
- Remove a client-only mod from the server; a client feature does not become server-compatible merely because its files load locally.
- Have one player join with a clean, correctly matched installation to identify whether the problem is local or server-wide.
The mod loads but its feature does nothing
- Read the mod’s key binding, command syntax or configuration instructions.
- Confirm that the feature is enabled for the current game mode and save.
- Check for a missing library in
Libsor a dependency that RedManager did not install manually. - Test after a full server restart; some hooks are applied only during initialization.
The world or save behaves strangely
Stop using the affected save, preserve the logs and restore the pre-mod backup. Do not repeatedly load and save a world while trying random combinations; every additional save can make it harder to identify or reverse a mod’s changes.
Keep a modded server maintainable
- Pin versions: do not auto-replace a working mod immediately after a new release. Test updates on the private server first.
- Change one variable: update the game, loader or a mod separately so a failure has a clear cause.
- Keep a manifest: list server files, client files, versions, dependencies and configuration changes.
- Back up before every world-changing update: especially building, environment and autosave modifications.
- Communicate maintenance windows: players need matching files before the server reopens.
- Remove abandoned mods: an unmaintained mod that was safe on an older patch can prevent the server from starting after a game update.
When a new Sons of the Forest patch arrives, expect to repeat the private test. RedLoader and individual mods can require updates independently, so a server that worked yesterday may need a loader or dependency refresh even when its configuration has not changed.
Resolving conflicting installation advice
You may encounter three different claims: that server-side mods do not work, that BepInEx is required, or that the loader must be installed only on the client. These claims appear in older hosting guides and are not consistent with the current RedLoader documentation, which describes dedicated-server support. The practical resolution is not to assume that every mod works; it is to verify the current mod page and test the exact release on your server build.

A panel may support an older loader or a limited set of files. Manual RedLoader installation in the directory containing SonsOfTheForestDS.exe gives you a known baseline, after which the host’s firewall, Wine or container settings can be diagnosed separately.
