Streamline Servers is the clearest first choice for an Australian-located Sons of the Forest server because its listing names Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, with plans starting at A$14 per month. That is a vendor-listed price, not a verified October 2026 quote, so check the live checkout page before paying.
Cheaper listings exist, including 4NetPlayers at 4.49 AUD per month, but that listing does not confirm an Australian server location. For co-op, location matters more than a low headline price: test a monthly plan or short trial from your own connection and from the friends who will join.

If your priority is keeping Australian players close to the server, begin with a provider that explicitly lets you select an Australian city. Among the options compared here, Streamline Servers is the only listing that names Australian locations individually: Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. It also advertises DDoS protection and 24/7 support. Those are provider claims, not independently verified service-level measurements, but they give you more concrete information than a generic “Australia” label.
Choose the city nearest the majority of your players. A Sydney or Melbourne machine is a sensible starting point for east-coast groups; Perth may suit a mostly Western Australian group. If players are spread across the country, ask the host which city is actually available on the plan you intend to buy and run a real connection test before committing to a long term.

Australian hosting options compared
The prices below are the providers’ listed starting prices collected for this comparison. They were not verified as current 2026 prices, and the currencies and billing terms differ. A low number in another currency is not automatically cheaper after conversion, tax, renewal pricing or payment fees.
| Provider | Listed starting price | Australian-location evidence | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamline Servers | A$14.00 per month | Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide named | Strongest location evidence in the group; listing also claims DDoS protection and 24/7 support |
| 4NetPlayers (en-au) | 4.49 AUD per month | No confirmed Australian server list | Australian storefront pricing is shown, but storefront country does not prove machine location |
| Supercraft | US$9.99 per month; US$7.83 per month effective on a 12-month term paid as US$94 upfront | Australia named as a served area in structured data | Australia is referenced, but a specific city or physical server location is not stated |
| XGamingServer | US$17.50 to US$42.00 per month across four tiers | Unclear | Four listed tiers; Australian placement is not confirmed |
| DatHost | €14.90 per month | Not confirmed | Currency and starting price are listed; Australian machine location is not stated |
| Respawn Host | €8.65 pay-per-use; €21.60 prepaid | Not shown | Billing choices are listed, but the listing does not show an Australian location |
| Servers4Gamers | From US$8.75 per month | Unverified | Starting price is shown; Australian placement is not established |
For a fair comparison, convert every quote to one currency and ask whether the displayed amount is an introductory rate, a renewal rate, a recurring monthly charge or a prepaid term. Supercraft’s lower effective monthly figure is specifically the result of paying US$94 for 12 months; it is not the same billing arrangement as a month-to-month A$14 plan. Respawn Host’s pay-per-use and prepaid figures likewise should not be compared as if they were identical monthly subscriptions.
Why the cheapest listing may not be the best value
4NetPlayers has the lowest displayed number in the table, but its en-au storefront does not confirm that the game process runs in Australia. You could be paying an Australian-currency price for a server in another region. Ask support for the exact city, data-centre country and whether that location is selectable before you place an order.
Supercraft’s structured data names Australia as a served area, which is a useful signal but not a city-level guarantee. The other listings do not provide enough location information to promise Australian latency. When a page says only “Australia,” “Asia-Pacific” or “low latency,” treat that as marketing until the provider identifies the actual region assigned to your plan.
How much ping should Australian players expect?
No measured Australian ping figures were published for any provider in the available material. Statements such as “awesome ping” or “low-latency gameplay” are promotional wording, not a test result. The practical rule for co-op is that the host’s location matters: an Australian server should generally be a better starting point for Australian players than one in the United States or Singapore, where the longer network path can add noticeable delay.
Test latency before you commit
- Select a monthly plan or a provider’s shortest available trial rather than paying for a year immediately.
- Choose the exact Australian city you expect to use, if the panel offers city selection.
- Have the player who will host most sessions connect from their normal home connection.
- Invite the friends who will actually play. Test at different times, including the evening, when residential networks can be busier.
- Repeat from friends in other states. A result that feels good in Sydney may not feel the same in Perth or regional areas.
- Keep the plan only after checking real in-game responsiveness and disconnect frequency, not just a marketing label.
If the provider will not disclose the assigned city, ask for a temporary server or a cancellation window in writing. There is no published Australian benchmark in the available evidence that can substitute for testing your own route.

Managed hosting, a VPS or your own connection?
Managed game hosting
A managed host handles the machine, operating system and game-server panel for you. This is the simplest route when you want to play rather than administer Linux, firewall rules and updates. Streamline Servers’ listing additionally claims DDoS protection and 24/7 support. Verify what those terms cover: whether protection is included on the specific plan, how support is contacted, and whether backups or restores cost extra.
Managed plans can still differ substantially. Confirm the allocated RAM and CPU, whether resources are shared, the server’s physical city, automatic restarts, save backups and the process for changing ports. None of those specifications is established for every provider in the comparison table, so do not infer them from price alone.
Self-hosting on a VPS
A comparison estimate puts a small VPS for a Sons of the Forest server at roughly 2 GHz, two cores, 3 GB of RAM and at least 30 GB of storage, at upwards of US$15 per month. That is a rough estimate rather than a guaranteed requirement or quote. You must also administer the operating system, firewall, updates, backups and network security.
An older guide recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and four cores at 2.3 GHz or higher. Because that guidance predates the current version, treat it as a conservative planning reference rather than an official specification. The discrepancy between the rough 3 GB/two-core VPS estimate and the older 4 GB/four-core recommendation is a reason to leave headroom, especially if several people will connect simultaneously. No official Steam or developer requirements page was available to settle the difference.

Hosting from home
A home server avoids a hosting subscription, but it puts the connection, power, router configuration and exposure to attacks under your control. You need a stable upload connection, a machine that can remain online during play sessions and the ability to forward the required UDP ports. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may not work even after you configure the router. A managed Australian host is usually less effort when your goal is reliable co-op rather than running infrastructure.
How to install a dedicated server
The dedicated server is distributed as a free SteamCMD download. Its Steam application ID is 2465200, and it also appears in Steam under the Tools section. The following workflow applies whether the machine is a VPS or a home computer; a managed provider may perform some of these steps through its control panel instead.

1. Prepare the machine
Use a supported operating-system image supplied by your VPS or host and reserve enough storage for the server files, saves, logs and updates. The available guidance ranges from an estimated 3 GB of RAM and two 2 GHz cores to an older recommendation of 4 GB and four 2.3 GHz-or-faster cores. Since neither figure is an official current requirement, avoid choosing the smallest possible instance if your group is large or the machine will run other services.
2. Install SteamCMD and download app 2465200
Install SteamCMD using the package or installer appropriate for your operating system, then sign in anonymously and request the application. A conventional SteamCMD sequence is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2465200 validate +quit
The download is free. If your provider offers a one-click template, confirm that it is installing app 2465200 rather than a similarly named client or tool. Keep the installation directory in a location where the service account can read and write saves and configuration files.
3. Find and edit dedicatedserver.cfg
The configuration file is named dedicatedserver.cfg and uses JSON. Current third-party guides identify three relevant settings:
- GamePort: the UDP port used for game traffic.
- QueryPort: the UDP port used for server queries.
- BlobSyncPort: the UDP port used for blob synchronisation.
A minimal example of the three values is {"GamePort":8766,"QueryPort":27016,"BlobSyncPort":9700}. Do not delete other keys already present in your file; preserve the complete JSON structure supplied by the current server build. The important rule is that the values in the file must match the ports opened in every firewall and hosting panel.
4. Open the current UDP ports
Recent third-party guides list UDP 8766 for the game, 27016 for queries and 9700 for blob synchronisation. Open those ports in three places when applicable:

- the operating-system firewall on the server;
- your home router’s port-forwarding rules, if the server is at home; and
- the provider’s network or security panel.
Older guides list a different set, including 27015 and 27031–27036. Do not blindly copy an old tutorial. Check the ports in your installed dedicatedserver.cfg and use those values consistently. The port numbers above are third-party guidance, not an official Steam or developer requirements document.
5. Start the server and perform a connection test
Start the server using the launch control supplied by your host or the startup method documented for your operating system. Wait for the process to finish loading, then use the address or server entry shown by the provider to connect. Test first with one player, then with the full group. Confirm that the server remains visible, that a second player can join and that saves persist after a restart.
If the provider assigns a new address or port after a restart, record the current connection details and update any saved bookmarks. For a home server, give friends the public address only through a channel you trust; never publish administrative credentials.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server does not appear or friends cannot join
- Compare GamePort, QueryPort and BlobSyncPort in dedicatedserver.cfg with the UDP rules in the host firewall, router and provider panel.
- Check whether you followed an older guide that uses 27015 or 27031–27036 while your current configuration uses 8766, 27016 and 9700.
- Confirm that SteamCMD completed app 2465200 and that the server process is actually running.
- Ask the provider whether the selected plan has a public IPv4 address and whether inbound UDP traffic is filtered.
Players connect but experience delay
First verify the physical city rather than changing random settings. A server in the United States or Singapore can add noticeable delay for Australian players, and a provider’s “low latency” wording does not establish a measured result. Test from each player’s normal connection and move to a nearer Australian city if the host allows it.
The process stops or the machine becomes unresponsive
Check RAM and CPU usage while the full group is connected. The available guidance is inconsistent: one estimate describes 3 GB and two cores, while an older guide recommends 4 GB and four faster cores. If the machine is close to its limits, move to a plan with more memory and CPU rather than assuming a port change will fix the problem. Also leave storage for saves, logs and future updates.
A provider’s location claim is vague
Request the actual data-centre city in writing. An Australian storefront, an “Australia served” label or a currency selector does not prove that your instance runs in Australia. If the answer is not specific, treat the location as unconfirmed and use a short billing period so you can test it yourself.

What to ask before paying
- Which Australian city will host this exact plan?
- Is the displayed price recurring, promotional, prepaid or an effective monthly figure?
- What will the renewal price be, and are taxes included?
- How much RAM, CPU capacity and storage are allocated?
- Are DDoS protection, backups and support included, and what limits apply?
- Can I change city or plan without rebuilding the server?
- What is the cancellation or refund policy if latency is poor?
- Which UDP ports does the current server build require, and can I edit them?
Recommendation by player type
Australian group that values location certainty
Start with Streamline Servers and select the nearest named city. Its A$14 monthly starting listing and explicit city list make it the most transparent Australian option in this comparison. Confirm the live price, resources and support terms before ordering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Budget-first buyer
Investigate the 4.49 AUD 4NetPlayers listing, but do not buy until support confirms the physical server location. A cheaper plan in a distant region can provide a worse co-op experience than a slightly more expensive Australian machine.
Players willing to prepay
Supercraft lists US$94 prepaid for 12 months, equivalent to US$7.83 per month, compared with US$9.99 month to month. Consider that discount only after confirming the Australian service area, renewal terms and cancellation policy.
Technically experienced administrator
A VPS can provide more control and may start around US$15 per month for the rough small-server estimate, but you must handle SteamCMD, JSON configuration, firewall rules, backups and updates. Budget for more than the minimum if monitoring shows the older 4 GB/four-core guidance is closer to your group’s needs.
Bottom line
For Sons of the Forest players in Australia, choose the provider that can prove where the machine is, not merely the one with the lowest advertised number. Streamline Servers has the strongest location evidence because it names five Australian cities and lists a starting price of A$14 per month. Other providers may be cheaper or offer Australia as a served area, but their city-level placement is not established here. Because no published Australian ping measurements exist, a monthly trial and a real group test are essential before a long-term commitment.
