Start with Lies of P if you want the closest all-around alternative to Bloodborne. Its parry-and-counter rhythm, forward pressure, gothic machinery and directed adventure align better than any other non-FromSoftware choice here. Choose Nioh 2 for the deepest combat sandbox, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for exacting deflection duels, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for a more forgiving deflect loop, or The Surge 2 for aggressive melee in science-fiction ruins.

| 2 | Nioh 2 | Ki timing, stance changes, weapon skills and yokai counters reward constant initiative. | Sengoku Japan with yokai | Players who want maximum system and build depth |
| 3 | Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Deflections fill posture until a Death Blow opening appears. | Focused ninja adventure | Players who prefer precise sword duels |
| 4 | Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty | Deflecting maintains momentum while Spirit and Morale reward staying active. | A dark fantasy version of Later Han China | Players learning aggressive Soulslike timing |
| 5 | The Surge 2 | Targeted strikes and limb severing turn every exchange into a risk-reward decision. | Industrial science-fiction ruins | Players who want melee pressure without gothic horror |
What “Bloodborne-style aggressive combat” actually means
The useful comparison is not simply “a difficult game with monsters.” Bloodborne makes waiting feel dangerous and retaliation attractive. PlayStation’s editorial guide describes its fast pace, side-step movement and Rally mechanic, which lets a player recover recently lost health by hitting back quickly. The same guide uses the warning that “shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.”

That creates four tests for a convincing recommendation:
Recommended Free Tools
- Forward pressure: the combat system should reward closing distance, interrupting or staggering enemies instead of permanently retreating.
- Retaliation: taking a hit should create a short window in which a skilled response can recover momentum, health, initiative or all three.
- Active defense: a parry, deflect, side-step or precisely timed guard should lead directly into offense.
- Fast decisions: weapon choice, spacing and attack timing should matter from one exchange to the next, not only between encounters.
Atmosphere is a separate question. Krat can evoke the bleak, ornate mood associated with Yharnam, while a Sengoku battlefield or a science-fiction factory can deliver equally forceful combat without resembling Bloodborne visually.
#1 Best Overall
- The essence of battle: Wield and master various weapons with unique combinations of Fable Arts and Legion Arms to find out what fits your playstyle
- Variety of attraction: Enjoy the beautiful, yet dark atmosphere of the Belle Époque era and explore the once prosperous city of Krat
- Lie system: P is made of a puppet's heart, but he learns how to think and feel like a human by lying
- Legacy of the classics: The city of Krat, the characters, and even the smallest objects reflect our deepest admiration for the original tale of Pinocchio
1. Lies of P: the closest overall match
Why its combat fits
Lies of P is the strongest single answer because it combines a demanding parry game with an attack-first rhythm and a gothic setting. PlayStation characterizes it as a brutally challenging action adventure built around fast precision combat, large boss fights and interconnected environments. Bosses test dodging, parrying and fierce attacks rather than passive blocking.
Successful parries negate incoming damage and build toward stagger opportunities. That makes defense an offensive action: you are not merely surviving a boss string, you are trying to stop it at the correct instant and convert the opening into damage. The result is closer to Bloodborne’s retaliation mindset than a conventional shield-and-counter Soulslike.
Weapon experimentation and progression
The blade-and-hilt system lets you combine parts to alter a weapon’s speed, moveset and special attacks. This is a meaningful form of build expression because the handle changes how a weapon behaves, not just how much damage its numbers display. You can tune a faster blade for a more aggressive player or select a slower arrangement that makes individual punish windows matter more.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →GamesRadar describes the game as taking place in Krat, a Belle Époque/steampunk-like puppet wasteland, with customizable melee weapons and “trick weapons.” Its judgment that the game “almost feels more like a Bloodborne-like than just a Soulslike” captures the unusual combination of atmosphere, directed exploration and offense-first encounters.
Structure, difficulty and trade-offs
The campaign is relatively linear but densely connected, giving the story a clear route while still rewarding detours and careful exploration. Expect demanding bosses and a timing curve that asks you to learn enemy strings instead of relying on repeated safe attacks. TechRadar calls it its “best soulslike” and emphasizes the parry-focused design.
Choose Lies of P when you want a story-led adventure with a coherent gothic identity and a combat loop that repeatedly asks, “Can you answer this attack immediately?” It is less suitable if you want the enormous loot, stance and skill-tree complexity of Nioh 2.

2. Nioh 2: the deepest and fastest combat sandbox
Why its combat fits
Nioh 2 is the recommendation for players who value combat systems above a single atmospheric through-line. GamesRadar calls it a “masocore” action RPG built around fast clashes, while TechRadar highlights slick, fast-paced fighting and the absence of shields. Without a shield to retreat behind, spacing, evasion, stance selection and timing stay central.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Its defining resource is Ki. Careful timing can restore energy, allowing a player who maintains rhythm to continue attacking, reposition and punish an enemy before either side fully resets. Ki management is therefore an aggression check: waste it and you become vulnerable; recover it cleanly and you can keep pressure on.
Stances, weapons and yokai abilities
Weapon-specific skill trees give each weapon family a distinct learning path. Katanas, kusarigama and switchglaives, among many other options, ask for different ranges and attack patterns. Stance changes add another decision layer, so the same weapon can trade speed, reach and defensive safety during a single fight.
Yokai abilities expand the counter game. GamesRadar notes that some can parry huge attacks, turning enemy power into an opportunity when the timing is right. The result is a much larger sandbox than Bloodborne: builds, loot, skills and supernatural counters all interact with the basic demand to keep moving forward.
Mission structure and trade-offs
The game is organized around level-based missions rather than one uninterrupted interconnected city. That structure supports repeated runs, optional objectives and extensive equipment experimentation, but it can feel less like a single gothic journey. Its difficulty is high and its systems are numerous; players who want a simple weapon-and-stat path may find the menus and loot layers distracting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPick Nioh 2 when “aggressive” means rapid stance changes, resource control, specialized weapons and build crafting. Pick Lies of P instead when atmosphere and a more directed campaign matter as much as the combat engine.

3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: pure deflection discipline
How the duel loop works
Sekiro is the most focused choice here. PlayStation describes it as a precision-focused ninja adventure whose combat centers on blocking and deflecting. Repeatedly deflecting an enemy attack damages that enemy’s posture; once the balance breaks, you earn an opening for a Death Blow.
This is not a health-bar race. A patient player who waits for ordinary damage can make a fight longer and less safe, while a player who stands in range and answers each strike can end it quickly. The ideal exchange is a chain of correct deflections, a posture break and a decisive finishing blow.
Why it is not simply another Bloodborne
Sekiro is also a FromSoftware game, but its progression is more focused and it offers less conventional RPG build variety than the other recommendations. You do not assemble a broad collection of weapons and stat-based playstyles in the same way. Movement, timing and reading an opponent are the progression.

4. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: aggressive parries with a gentler entry curve
Deflect, Spirit and momentum
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty places its central bet on the Deflect action. PlayStation advises practicing it to maintain momentum, and explains that aggression raises Morale Rank. GameSpot describes checkpoints that respawn enemies and a Spirit gauge that powers attacks while also absorbing damage.
The Spirit system creates a visible consequence for passivity. Successful actions and pressure help you maintain the resources needed for stronger attacks, while reckless or poorly timed decisions can leave you exposed. TechRadar calls the parry satisfying and describes the first playthrough as more forgiving than the other games in its list.

- Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
- Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
Morale and recovery
Morale gives exploration a second risk-and-reward layer. Fighting effectively improves your standing, while defeats can set you back; PlayStation notes that defeated players can reclaim Genuine Qi. The loop encourages you to keep moving through an area instead of treating every checkpoint as a reason to avoid combat.
Compared with Sekiro, its deflect timing is more welcoming and its progression offers more room to recover from mistakes. Compared with Lies of P, the setting is historical dark fantasy rather than Belle Époque gothic horror. Choose it when you want active defense and forward momentum without starting at the harshest end of the timing spectrum.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. The Surge 2: targeted science-fiction melee
Limb targeting as an offensive decision
The Surge 2 moves the formula into a science-fiction setting and makes body-part selection the centerpiece of its melee risk. GameSpot lists a September 24, 2019 release from Deck13 Interactive and explains that you can target individual limbs to hit weak points or deliberately sever parts.
Severing is not cosmetic. The materials from removed parts are needed to upgrade the combat rig, so every encounter asks whether you should take the safer route toward victory or expose yourself to a dangerous limb for a specific component. That turns aggression into equipment planning as well as moment-to-moment offense.
Who should choose it
The game suits readers who want close-quarters pressure, deliberate targeting and industrial science-fiction ruins instead of gothic churches and plague imagery. Its combat resemblance to Bloodborne is strongest in the insistence on melee engagement and risk-reward attacks, not in mood or weapon presentation.

Which game should you choose?
If you want the closest answer to “What should I play after Bloodborne?”
Choose Lies of P. It is the only pick that combines a strongly gothic, interconnected-feeling setting with a parry-and-attack rhythm designed around aggressive bosses and customizable melee weapons.
If combat depth matters more than atmosphere
Choose Nioh 2. Its Ki, stances, weapon trees, loot and yokai abilities give you more variables to master than any other game in this list. Be prepared for a steeper learning and equipment-management burden.
If you want the strictest duel training
Choose Sekiro. Its deflection-and-posture model is the purest test of reading attacks and responding on time. It is the least accommodating option for players who expect broad RPG builds.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you are new to active-defense Soulslikes
Choose Wo Long. Its Deflect loop teaches the same forward-thinking habit while its Spirit, Morale and recovery systems provide more room to stabilize after mistakes than Sekiro’s duel structure.
If you want a different setting and a concrete loot target
Choose The Surge 2. Limb targeting gives every fight a specific material objective, and the science-fiction setting keeps the experience distinct from gothic fantasy.

How to learn an attack-first game without falling back to passive play
- Pick one defensive action first. In Lies of P, practice the parry; in Sekiro and Wo Long, practice Deflect; in Nioh 2, learn Ki recovery; in The Surge 2, learn targeting before chasing severed parts.
- Watch the enemy’s recovery, not only its wind-up. The safest attack is usually the one that lands after your active defense has ended an enemy string.
- Spend the opening immediately. These games reward converting a successful parry, deflect or limb break into pressure. Hesitating throws away the advantage the system just gave you.
- Keep one reliable weapon setup. Experiment after you can consistently survive ordinary encounters. Changing every tool at once makes it difficult to tell whether a failure came from timing or equipment.
- Use checkpoints as practice stations. Repeated enemies are valuable tests for rhythm, resource recovery and spacing, not merely obstacles between bosses.
The right choice depends on which part of Bloodborne you are trying to preserve. For rally-like retaliation and gothic presentation, select Lies of P. For a larger mechanical laboratory, select Nioh 2. For pure deflection, select Sekiro; for a softer introduction to that idea, select Wo Long. For targeted melee in a new genre setting, select The Surge 2.
