Best Soulslike Games With Dedicated PvP Arenas

Elden Ring is the best all-round Soulslike for dedicated arena PvP because its free Colosseum update provides three venues and four clearly defined rule options: 1v1 Duels, team-based United Combat, free-for-all Combat Ordeal, and an optional Spirit Ashes ruleset. Choose Dark Souls III if you want the most focused Undead Match format, unlocked by burning Champion’s Bones at Firelink Shrine. Choose Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin if covenant identity, arena ranks and faction-based dueling matter more to you than a standalone menu.

These games cover three different ideas of arena PvP: Elden Ring treats it as a modern, openly presented playlist; Dark Souls III builds it around a dedicated unlock and compact match types; Dark Souls II makes the arena part of covenant membership and progression. No reliable cross-platform, cross-region 2026 population comparison is available, so this guide ranks structure and access rather than claiming which game has the busiest queues.

What makes a Soulslike arena worth choosing?

A dedicated PvP arena is more than an area where invasions can happen. It gives players a repeatable ruleset for deliberate matches, separates competitive play from ordinary level exploration and makes the available formats understandable before a fight starts. For this comparison, the important questions are:

  • Format variety: Can you play duels, team battles and free-for-all matches, or is the arena built around one kind of fight?
  • Access: Is the mode available through a free update, a specific in-game unlock, a DLC-supported edition or covenant membership?
  • Match scale: Does the game support only one opponent, or can several players share a battle?
  • Identity: Is the arena a standalone queue, or does it express a faction and its progression system?

Using those criteria, Elden Ring offers the broadest package, Dark Souls III offers the clearest classic arena structure and Dark Souls II offers the strongest covenant connection.

Elden Ring: the best all-round arena package

Why Elden Ring leads on variety

Elden Ring’s free Colosseum update is the most complete answer if your definition of “best” is the number of supported arena experiences. The update opened three dedicated arenas, with venues in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell. Each location is associated with the same broad Colosseum system, so the important difference is not a separate progression track but the range of rules you can select.

The modern presentation also makes the choice easy to understand. You are not relying on an invasion sign or hoping that an unrelated activity produces the type of match you want. The Colosseum is explicitly built for organized battles, making it the safest recommendation for someone buying a Soulslike primarily for arena variety.

What you can play

  • Duels: One player fights one opponent in a 1-versus-1 match. This is the cleanest option when you want a direct test of build, spacing and decision-making without allies or multiple targets.
  • United Combat: A team-based format. It changes the problem from defeating a single opponent to coordinating pressure and surviving while several combatants influence the fight.
  • Combat Ordeal: A free-for-all in which everyone fights everyone else. There is no opposing team to protect you, so target selection and timing matter as much as winning an individual exchange.
  • Spirit Ashes ruleset: An optional ruleset that allows Spirit Ashes. It is distinct from the standard arena choices and should be selected only if you want summons to be part of the match’s assumptions.

The official announcement identifies Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell as the three arena locations. The European announcement specifically identifies the Royal Colosseum in Leyndell as the Duel venue, giving the 1v1 mode a named setting within the wider system.

How to decide between Elden Ring modes

Start with Duels if you are learning arena PvP or testing a build. Because each side has one opponent, you can identify whether a problem comes from your weapon choice, timing or defensive habits without also accounting for team communication. Move to United Combat when you want coordinated battles, and choose Combat Ordeal when you prefer unpredictable multi-target encounters. The Spirit Ashes option is best treated as its own ruleset rather than a minor variation, because summon availability changes the assumptions behind every engagement.

What you need to access it

The Colosseum arrived as a free update rather than a separately sold arena expansion. You therefore need the game updated to a version that includes the Colosseum content, but the arena itself is not presented as a paid add-on. The exact steps for reaching each venue are part of the game world, while the competitive distinction is the ruleset you select once the Colosseum system is available.

Elden Ring is the strongest recommendation when your group cannot agree on one match style. A duelist, a team player and someone who enjoys free-for-all chaos can all use the same game without changing to a different multiplayer system.

Dark Souls III: the classic Undead Match choice

Why choose Dark Souls III?

Dark Souls III is the better fit for players who want arena PvP to feel like a focused competitive mode rather than one feature inside a much larger open world. Its system is called Undead Match, and the available formats center on honorable duels, free-for-all brawls and team-based fights. That narrower menu is a strength if you value clarity over the broader ruleset found in Elden Ring.

Bandai Namco describes Undead Match as supporting duels against another Cursed Undead, free-for-all battles and team fights for up to five other players. In practical terms, that gives you a 1v1 option plus small-group formats without turning the mode into a large-scale multiplayer event.

Unlocking Undead Match

The access step is specific and easy to miss:

  1. Reach the Firelink Shrine bonfire.
  2. Obtain the Champion’s Bones item.
  3. Burn Champion’s Bones at the Firelink Shrine bonfire.
  4. Use the resulting Undead Match access to select the available PvP maps and game types.

The game’s FAQ states that its update adds three PvP maps and all game types. That means the bonfire action is the key in-game unlock, while the update supplies the arena content itself.

Do you need the DLC?

Edition language can make this confusing. Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades is a complete package containing the two DLC chapters, and the Undead Match feature is described in DLC-supported terms. The reliable distinction is this: Champion’s Bones and the relevant update are required for the in-game unlock, while The Fire Fades packages the base game and both DLC chapters together. If you own a different edition, check that it is updated and that your platform version includes the Undead Match content associated with your purchase; do not assume that owning only a DLC chapter or an unpatched base installation provides the arena.

This makes The Fire Fades the simplest purchase choice for a new player who wants the complete Dark Souls III package, but the arena question should be checked against your exact platform and edition rather than answered with a blanket “DLC is always required” or “DLC is never required.”

  • Become the Slayer of Demons - Venture to the northern kingdom of Boletaria – a once prosperous land of knights, now beset with unspeakable creatures and ravenous demons. Meet strange characters, unhinged and twisted by the world around them, and unravel the unsettling story of Demon’s Souls.
  • Face the world’s greatest warriors in ferocious PVP combat - With online invasions adding to the danger of your quest. Or play cooperatively by summoning allies to aid in your fight against the demons. Active PS Plus subscription required for online multiplayer.

Which Undead Match format fits you?

  • Duels: Pick this when you want the most controlled test of a character and a single opponent.
  • Free-for-all brawls: Choose this when several players competing independently is more appealing than team coordination.
  • Team fights: Use this for organized group combat. The official description allows battles involving up to five other players, so the mode supports more than a simple pair while remaining a small-scale encounter.

Dark Souls III is the best recommendation for someone who specifically remembers the compact, formal feel of older Souls PvP. Its arena structure is not as expansive as Elden Ring’s, but every listed format serves a clear purpose and the unlock has a memorable in-game ritual.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin: the covenant-focused arena

What makes its arenas different?

Dark Souls II ties dedicated PvP arenas to covenant identity. Instead of treating the arena only as a universal playlist, it gives two factions a reason to fight within their own systems: the Brotherhood of Blood and the Blue Sentinels. That design makes the choice of covenant part of the PvP experience rather than a cosmetic decision.

The Brotherhood of Blood offers its members PvP arenas to determine who is the true champion of the Brotherhood. Separately, joining the Blue Sentinels opens PvP arenas for dueling fellow members. The result is a more faction-driven structure than the standalone Colosseum approach in Elden Ring or the bonfire unlock in Dark Souls III.

Choosing a covenant

  • Brotherhood of Blood: Choose this when you want your arena participation framed around proving yourself inside an explicitly competitive covenant.
  • Blue Sentinels: Choose this when you prefer dueling fellow members through the covenant’s arena system.

The covenant connection also links arena participation to identity and progression. Arena ranks are part of the appeal for players who want their repeated matches to reinforce membership in a faction, not merely produce an isolated win record. The available evidence does not establish a single universal rank threshold or a cross-platform activity level, so those details should be checked in the version you play rather than assumed from another edition.

Edition guidance

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is the complete physical package identified for this game. It is the straightforward choice if you want the Scholar edition’s content and its covenant-based arena systems together. Because covenant access is the defining requirement, your first task after starting the game is not finding a universal arena menu; it is identifying which covenant’s style matches the kind of PvP progression you want.

Dark Souls II is the best choice here for a player who values atmosphere and faction allegiance as much as match variety. If you only want to press a button and alternate between duel, team and free-for-all queues, Elden Ring or Dark Souls III is a better fit.

Which game should you buy or return to?

Pick Elden Ring when variety is the priority

Select Elden Ring if your group wants all three major arena structures in one game: direct duels, coordinated teams and everyone-against-everyone matches. It is also the only one of these three with an explicitly documented Spirit Ashes-enabled ruleset. The free update lowers the barrier to trying the Colosseum once you own the game, and the three venues give the system a visible presence in the world.

Pick Dark Souls III when structure and scale matter

Select Dark Souls III if you want a compact Undead Match menu and fights involving one opponent or a small group. The Champion’s Bones ritual gives the mode a clear unlock condition, while the three-map update and the documented duel, free-for-all and team formats provide enough variety for regular arena sessions without the additional ruleset choices found in Elden Ring.

Pick Dark Souls II when covenant progression is the point

Select Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin if the idea of joining a faction, earning standing and fighting within that identity is more important than having a universal queue. The Brotherhood of Blood and Blue Sentinels give the arena a social and progression context that the other two games do not emphasize in the same way.

Practical setup checklist

Before launching an Elden Ring arena session

  • Install the game update that adds the Colosseum.
  • Reach the Colosseum locations in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell as appropriate for your playthrough.
  • Choose between Duels, United Combat and Combat Ordeal.
  • Decide separately whether the Spirit Ashes ruleset matches the kind of contest you want.

Before launching Dark Souls III Undead Match

  • Confirm that your installation is updated.
  • Obtain Champion’s Bones.
  • Burn the item at the Firelink Shrine bonfire.
  • Check that your edition includes the Undead Match content and any DLC entitlement you expect, especially if you are comparing a standard release with The Fire Fades.

Before launching Dark Souls II arena PvP

  • Decide whether Brotherhood of Blood or Blue Sentinels better matches your preferred identity.
  • Join that covenant.
  • Use the covenant’s arena access and treat rank progression as part of the activity rather than a separate universal queue.

What cannot be concluded from available data

There is no authoritative, comparable 2026 figure covering arena populations across these games, platforms and regions. Queue speed, “most active” status and the largest player base can change by console or PC ecosystem, territory, time of day and edition. Those claims require a named platform, region and date; they should not be used as a universal ranking.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore structural. Elden Ring wins on documented mode variety and presentation. Dark Souls III wins for a classic Undead Match experience with clear small-scale formats. Dark Souls II wins for covenant-centered arena identity and rank-oriented progression. Choose according to the kind of competition you want to repeat, not an unsupported population claim.
