For a compatible desktop or laptop, a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is the best default upgrade for a large Steam library. It offers enough room for several modern games without paying the premium or adding the cooling demands of PCIe 5.0. The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB and WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB are strong high-end choices; the Crucial T500 is another capable PCIe 4.0 option. Before buying, confirm your computer has an M.2 2280 slot, the right M-key and PCIe support, and enough clearance for a bare drive or heatsink. Steam Deck-class handhelds normally require a shorter M.2 2230 drive, so a desktop 2280 SSD will not fit.
The short answer: buy a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive
A 2TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD is the sensible center point for PC gaming in 2026. Current games regularly occupy 80GB to well over 150GB, and a 2TB drive leaves room for Windows, applications, downloadable content and updates while avoiding the high cost of very large capacities. PCIe 4.0 delivers excellent game-loading performance with broad motherboard support, and it generally runs cooler than the fastest PCIe 5.0 models.

The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB is the most straightforward premium recommendation when your system supports an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slot. Samsung specifies TLC NAND, PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0, sequential reads up to 7,450 MB/s, sequential writes up to 6,900 MB/s and a five-year limited warranty. The WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB is an equally credible alternative, particularly if its price, optional heatsink or larger-capacity range is better for your build. The Crucial T500 belongs in the same PCIe 4.0 class, but its published game results are manufacturer claims rather than a universal ranking.
If your current drive is a mechanical hard disk, almost any reputable SSD is a major upgrade. If you already use a SATA SSD, NVMe can reduce some load times, but the difference depends on the game and the rest of the computer. CPU decompression, shader compilation, asset processing and online authentication can become the limiting factors, so no SSD can promise a fixed percentage improvement on every title.

Check compatibility before choosing a model
Performance specifications matter only after the drive physically fits and the host can communicate with it. Use the computer or motherboard manual, not just a retailer listing, to verify each item below.
M.2 size and mounting point
Most desktop and full-size laptop NVMe drives use the M.2 2280 format: 22mm wide and 80mm long. The mounting screw or standoff must be present at the 2280 position. Some compact laptops use 2242 or 2230 drives instead, and a 2280 model cannot be shortened or safely mounted in those systems. Steam Deck-class handhelds generally use M.2 2230.
Keying and protocol
Look for an M-key socket that accepts an NVMe drive. M.2 describes the shape, not the storage protocol; some M.2 sockets support only SATA. The specification should state PCIe/NVMe support, and the motherboard manual should identify which M.2 sockets are connected to PCIe lanes. A drive may physically insert into a socket that cannot run it at its advertised speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPCIe generation and lanes
A PCIe 4.0 SSD works in many PCIe 3.0 systems but will be limited by the older link. It can still be a sensible purchase because the drive remains usable after a platform upgrade. Check whether the slot is x4; a slot with fewer lanes can reduce throughput. PCIe 5.0 drives are backward-compatible in principle, but a PCIe 4.0 slot cannot deliver PCIe 5.0 bandwidth.
Heatsink and clearance
Desktop motherboards often include an M.2 cover with a thermal pad. Remove the protective film from the pad, align the drive and reinstall the cover without bending the board. If the motherboard has no cover, choose a model with an integrated heatsink only when the case has room for it. A thick heatsink can collide with a graphics card, laptop bottom cover or handheld shell. PC Gamer’s 2026 buying checklist specifically calls out socket layout and whether a pre-fitted heatsink is required.

System support and firmware
Install the latest motherboard or laptop firmware before troubleshooting an undetected drive. Older systems may need an update for large-capacity NVMe devices or boot support. A new SSD can be used as a secondary Steam library without being bootable, but cloning an operating-system drive requires firmware settings that support UEFI NVMe booting.
Choose capacity around your installed library
| Capacity | Best fit | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | One or two frequently played games, or a secondary drive | Lowest purchase cost and adequate for a focused library | Large games and updates consume free space quickly |
| 2TB | Most desktop and laptop Steam libraries | Balanced price, room for many current games and healthy free-space margin | May fill quickly if you keep dozens of 100GB-plus titles installed |
| 4TB | Players who avoid uninstalling games or share a PC | Fewer reinstalls and better room for large collections | Higher total cost; value depends on price per usable terabyte |
| 8TB | Very large libraries, mod archives or a single-drive build | Maximum capacity in the SN850X range | Highest cost and potentially lower value than adding a second drive |
Capacity is more important than chasing the largest sequential-read number. Leave free space for temporary update files, shader caches and the SSD’s internal housekeeping. A nearly full drive can lose write consistency, especially during large game installations. A practical 2TB installation should reserve a visible margin rather than treating every advertised gigabyte as available library space.

| Interface | Typical position in a gaming PC | What to expect | Cooling and value |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCIe 3.0 NVMe | Older desktops and laptops | Still much faster and more responsive than SATA SSDs for many tasks | Usually easy to cool; good reuse option |
| PCIe 4.0 NVMe | Mainstream current platform | Excellent game-loading and asset-streaming performance | Best overall balance for a new Steam drive |
| PCIe 5.0 NVMe | Newest enthusiast platforms | Very high sequential bandwidth, but game gains are often small today | Can require stronger heatsinking and airflow; premium is difficult to justify solely for Steam |
Sequential read speed is easy to advertise, but game launches involve many small reads. PC Gamer identifies random 4K performance as especially relevant to maps, assets and game saves. Queue depth, controller behavior, firmware and the game engine all affect the result, so a drive with a lower headline number can feel the same as a faster one in a particular title.

Samsung 990 PRO: the straightforward premium default
The 990 PRO combines a high-end PCIe 4.0 controller with TLC NAND and a five-year limited warranty. Its M.2 2280 format fits the standard desktop expansion slot, provided the motherboard exposes four PCIe 4.0 lanes. Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard and heat-spreader label are intended to manage heat during sustained workloads. Use the motherboard cover or an appropriate heatsink rather than installing the bare drive in a poorly ventilated compact case.
Samsung reports a Forspoken map load of about one second on the 990 PRO, compared with four seconds on a SATA SSD and 28 seconds on a hard disk under Samsung’s stated test systems. That is a vendor result for one game and hardware configuration, not a guaranteed Steam loading time. The 2TB model is the clearest fit for a large PC library; select 1TB when the library is small and 4TB when avoiding reinstalls matters more than the lowest upfront cost.

WD_BLACK SN850X: a strong alternative with more capacity
The SN850X is a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 drive designed for computers with an M.2 M-key port. SanDisk lists sequential reads up to 7,300 MB/s for the 1TB through 4TB models. It is offered in capacities up to 8TB and in versions with an optional integrated heatsink. That range makes it useful for a single-drive gaming PC or a library shared by several users.
Choose the heatsink version only if it fits beneath your motherboard cover or laptop panel. In a desktop with a robust motherboard M.2 shield, the standard drive can be the cleaner installation. Compare the price per usable terabyte at the time of purchase; a lower-capacity model with a discount can be better value than paying for bandwidth a game will not use.
Crucial T500: consider it when independent results support the price
Crucial positions the T500 as a PCIe Gen4 NVMe gaming SSD and cites Micron testing involving Forspoken, Call of Duty and Valorant. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s selected systems and procedures. Treat them as evidence that the drive is aimed at gaming, not as a universal league table. Check current firmware support, warranty terms, heatsink clearance and independent tests for the exact capacity before choosing it over the Samsung or WD alternatives.
What changes when you upgrade from another drive?
From a hard disk drive
This is usually the largest perceived improvement. Menus open faster, long level loads become shorter and background file access is less disruptive. An inexpensive SATA SSD can already remove the mechanical seek delays that make an HDD feel sluggish. NVMe adds bandwidth and responsiveness, but the biggest jump is leaving the HDD behind.
From a SATA SSD
Modern NVMe can help with games that stream many assets or perform substantial file reads, but gains vary by title. Some games are limited by CPU decompression, shader compilation, server checks or game-engine scheduling. Expect a better ceiling for large transfers and some shorter loads, not a guaranteed doubling of frame rate or a fixed loading-time reduction.

From an older NVMe drive
Check whether the existing drive is actually the bottleneck. If it has adequate free space, healthy SMART data and acceptable temperatures, capacity may be a better upgrade than replacing it for a newer sequential-read rating. A second 2TB drive can provide more practical benefit than moving from one fast PCIe 4.0 model to another.
Install the SSD in a desktop or laptop
- Back up important files. Copy saves, documents and authentication data before opening the system. Steam Cloud is useful but should not be the only backup for games with local saves or mods.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the computer, disconnect AC power and hold the power button briefly to discharge residual power. Follow the laptop manufacturer’s service procedure and warranty conditions.
- Locate the correct M.2 socket. Confirm the socket’s supported length and PCIe generation. On desktops, avoid a slot that disables a graphics-card lane or SATA port unless the manual says that trade-off is acceptable.
- Install the drive at an angle. Insert the connector fully, press the free end down to the standoff and secure it with the supplied screw. Do not force the module flat before the connector is seated.
- Apply cooling correctly. Use the motherboard heatsink or the drive’s heatsink, never both if they interfere. Remove protective film from thermal pads and ensure the cover makes even contact.
- Enter firmware setup. Confirm that the SSD is detected. If it is missing, power down and reseat it, then check the socket’s protocol, firmware version and lane-sharing rules.
- Initialize and format in the operating system. In Windows, open Disk Management, initialize a new drive as GPT, create a simple NTFS volume and assign a drive letter. Do not initialize the disk if you are cloning an existing installation until the cloning software instructs you.
Move or create your Steam library
- Add the drive to Steam. Open Steam, choose Steam > Settings > Storage, select the new drive and choose Add Drive if Steam has not created a library there.
- Move installed games. In the same Storage view, select a game, choose Move, select the new library and confirm. Steam transfers the game files instead of downloading them again when the installation is intact.
- Set the default location. Use the Storage screen’s menu to make the SSD the default library for future installations. Keep a separate location for recordings or large archives if free space is tight.
- Verify files after migration. For a game that reports missing data, open its Properties, choose Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files. Mods may need to be re-enabled or re-linked after a move.
Cloning is appropriate when replacing a boot drive and preserving the existing Windows installation. For a secondary Steam drive, a clean library on the new SSD is usually simpler and avoids copying old temporary files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control heat and sustained performance
Game launches are often short bursts, but installing, patching and unpacking games can keep an SSD busy for minutes. Excess heat can trigger thermal throttling, reducing sustained write speed and making large transfers inconsistent. Monitor temperatures with the motherboard utility or the SSD vendor’s software during a long install rather than judging cooling from an idle reading.
- Use a motherboard M.2 shield or a correctly sized heatsink when available.
- Place a bare drive away from a graphics-card backplate or another heat source when the board provides more than one socket.
- Maintain front-to-back case airflow; do not cover laptop vents with fabric or soft surfaces.
- For a handheld, respect the original thermal pad, shield and power limits. A drive that benchmarks well in a desktop may run hotter or draw more power in a compact enclosure.
How to judge gaming performance fairly
Compare the same game, patch, save point and hardware when evaluating two SSDs. Record a cold launch and a repeat launch, because the operating system and game may cache files after the first run. Also note whether the test includes shader compilation, an online login or a network check. Those stages can dominate the stopwatch while being unrelated to raw SSD throughput.

Use random 4K responsiveness, sustained temperature and game-specific loading tests alongside sequential read and write figures. A vendor benchmark is useful context but not a universal promise: Samsung’s Forspoken result and Micron’s T500 game tests were run on stated systems selected by the manufacturers. Independent testing with your processor, graphics card and game library is the only way to establish a personal before-and-after result.

Troubleshooting common problems
The SSD is not detected
- Power off and reseat the module; verify that the screw is holding it flat.
- Check the manual for a SATA-only M.2 socket, disabled lanes or a shared port.
- Update motherboard or laptop firmware and reset storage settings only after recording the current configuration.
- Test the drive in another compatible socket or computer when possible. If it remains absent in firmware, contact the seller or manufacturer rather than repeatedly formatting it.
The drive appears smaller than advertised
Manufacturers describe capacity in decimal terabytes, while Windows reports binary tebibytes and reserves space for partitions and system metadata. A small difference is normal. A much larger discrepancy suggests an incorrect partition, an uninitialized region or a counterfeit/faulty device and should be investigated with the drive’s management utility.
Game loads are not faster
- Confirm that the game is installed on the new SSD, not the old library.
- Repeat the test after shaders finish compiling and after online services respond.
- Check CPU usage, decompression activity and temperatures during the load.
- Keep free space available and update SSD firmware. Do not infer a hardware fault from one game whose engine is CPU- or network-bound.
Installation or updates slow down
Large Steam updates often decompress, patch and rewrite files rather than simply downloading them. A fast SSD can still appear slow when the CPU is unpacking data or when the drive is nearly full and hot. Leave free space, improve airflow and allow the patch to finish before comparing drives.
Steam Deck and other handhelds
Do not buy a desktop 2280 model for a handheld without checking its service manual. Steam Deck-class devices commonly require M.2 2230 drives, which are 30mm long. The shorter module must also meet the handheld’s power, thermal and single-sided clearance limits. Capacity choices still follow the same logic: 1TB suits a focused collection, while 2TB is more comfortable for several large games, but the exact supported capacities and installation procedure are device-specific.
Back up the handheld, remove the battery connection as directed by its service documentation and replace any thermal shield or pad exactly as supplied. After reinstalling the operating system or cloning the original drive, verify that sleep, charging and game-mode behavior remain normal; compact systems can expose power or heat issues that never appear on a desktop benchmark.
Maintenance after the upgrade
- Keep the SSD firmware and motherboard firmware current, but read release notes before applying an update to a boot drive.
- Maintain a reasonable amount of free space for updates and background housekeeping.
- Use the operating system’s scheduled TRIM support; do not run repeated full-drive defragmentation on an SSD.
- Monitor SMART health and temperature occasionally, especially after moving the drive into a hotter case or laptop.
- Back up irreplaceable saves and files independently of Steam Cloud.
For most PC players, the purchase decision is therefore straightforward: verify the slot and clearance, choose a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe model, and prioritize capacity, random responsiveness and cooling over an eye-catching sequential number. Move to 4TB or 8TB when your installed library justifies it, and choose a 2230 drive instead when the target is a handheld.
