Best SSDs for Steam Deck: Capacity, Compatibility, and Value

A Steam Deck internal SSD must be a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe drive. Compare capacity, exact fit, current local pricing, seller, and warranty before choosing; microSD adds storage without opening the handheld.

The right internal Steam Deck upgrade is a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. WD_BLACK SN770M and Crucial P310 2230 are two manufacturer-documented candidates, but the available specifications do not establish a performance or value winner. Choose capacity around your game library, compare current local prices and warranty terms, and consider microSD if you want more storage without opening the Deck.

Which SSD fits a Steam Deck?

For an internal replacement, look for a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. iFixit’s Steam Deck SSD Replacement guide, written by Carsten Frauenheim, states: “The Steam Deck’s SSD is a single-sided M.2 2230.” Check the dimensions and sidedness in the exact product listing; a standard M.2 2280 drive is not the format established for this replacement.

Two product families have manufacturer-level Steam Deck compatibility documentation. That makes them candidates to compare, not proven performance winners:

  • WD_BLACK SN770M: Western Digital describes it as a 2230 NVMe drive compatible with Steam Deck and offers capacities up to 2TB. Its datasheet advertises up to 5,150 MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models and says it is backwards-compatible with PCIe Gen 3. These are manufacturer specifications, not Steam Deck benchmark results.
  • Crucial P310 2230: Crucial names Steam Deck among compatible handhelds. For its 1TB 2230 model, the 2024 product flyer advertises up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not measured Steam Deck performance.

Advertised sequential speeds alone do not show how much faster games will load on a Deck, or whether a drive will affect battery life, heat, or sustained performance. The cited material provides no independent Steam Deck comparison that settles those questions.

How much SSD capacity should you buy?

Start with the storage already installed in your Deck and how many large games you want available at once. Valve lists different stock configurations by model:

Model Storage configurations listed by Valve Expansion
Steam Deck OLED 512GB and 1TB NVMe SSD High-speed microSD card slot
Steam Deck LCD 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB MicroSD card expansion

These are the configurations on Valve’s OLED specifications and LCD specifications pages accessed in 2026; availability can vary by time and region. The LCD page marks 64GB and 512GB as available while supplies last.

A 1TB or 2TB drive is worth considering only if the added room suits your library and its current price difference makes sense to you. No reliable, apples-to-apples current price-per-terabyte comparison is established here, so there is no defensible cheapest-drive or value-winner claim. Compare local listings for the same capacity and verify the seller and warranty before buying.

Should you replace the SSD or add a microSD card?

Both LCD and OLED Decks have microSD expansion, giving you a way to add game storage without opening the handheld. The cited specifications establish the slot’s presence, but do not compare microSD cards with internal SSDs on load times, endurance, or cost. Choose based on whether avoiding disassembly matters more to you than replacing the internal drive.

An internal SSD swap is a physical repair followed by software work. iFixit’s LCD guide covers removal and replacement, but says additional software tools and procedures are needed to install an operating system. It directs users to Valve’s recovery instructions to recover, repair, or re-image SteamOS. Plan for that recovery step rather than treating the hardware swap as the entire job.

What to check before replacing the internal drive

iFixit’s LCD guide lists Phillips #1 and #0 screwdrivers, opening picks, and tweezers. It also gives these model- and guide-specific preparation cautions:

  • Gen4 read/write speed compatible with PCIe Gen3 interface
  • Small-size solution offering TB-grade massive capacity.
  • Discharge the battery below 25%; the guide says Valve recommends battery storage mode before internal repairs.
  • Remove any microSD card before taking off the back cover; the guide warns an installed card can break during cover removal.
  • Transfer the SSD’s ESD shielding to the replacement drive, or replace the shielding.

The cited replacement guide is for the LCD Deck and points OLED owners to a separate Steam Deck OLED repair resource. Do not assume every pictured step or internal layout is identical between models. If you are not comfortable opening the device and handling its components, microSD expansion avoids that repair.

How to compare SSD listings

Once you have confirmed the form factor, compare the exact listing rather than relying on a product-family name or headline speed. Useful checks are:

  • Capacity: Match the drive size to your library and budget.
  • Fit: Verify M.2 2230 dimensions, NVMe interface, and single-sided construction on the specific listing.
  • Cost per terabyte: Compare current regional prices for equivalent capacities and account for the seller.
  • Warranty: Read the warranty terms and confirm who handles support for that listing.
  • Evidence beyond peak speed: Look for independent testing relevant to sustained performance, power draw, temperature, and battery life; manufacturer sequential-speed figures do not answer those questions.
