Best Starfield Graphics Settings for Smooth Performance on PC

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For smooth Starfield performance, start with an upscaler at Quality, lower shadows, volumetric lighting and reflections before sacrificing texture quality, and tune for a stable frame rate in New Atlantis or another busy settlement. Use DLSS on compatible NVIDIA GPUs, FSR 3 or XeSS on other hardware, and add frame generation only after the game already maintains a healthy base rate.

Quick-start settings by PC type

These are starting points, not guarantees. Starfield can be CPU-limited in cities and GPU-limited in open areas or at higher resolutions, so judge the result in the locations you actually play. Set a sustainable cap rather than targeting an uncapped peak in space.

System and target Upscaling Shadows, volumetrics and reflections Crowd density Other recommendations
1080p mainstream or older GPU FSR 3 or XeSS Quality; switch to Balanced only if the GPU cannot hold the target Medium; use Low if city frame rate still collapses Low or Medium Custom preset; disable motion blur, film grain and depth of field; add frame generation only after the base rate is stable
1440p RTX GPU DLSS Quality first Medium, while keeping textures high when VRAM allows Medium, then lower it if New Atlantis is CPU-bound DLSS Frame Generation can be tested after a stable base rate; turn VSync off when it is active
4K high-end GPU DLSS or FSR 3 Quality Keep visual-priority settings higher when frame-time headroom permits; reduce volumetrics or reflections first when spikes appear Medium or higher if the CPU sustains it Cap frame rate to what the busiest settlement can maintain; with FSR 3 and a VRR monitor, Bethesda recommends VSync on

Texture quality is usually a better place to spend available VRAM than immediately dropping every visual option. If frame time rises in a settlement while GPU usage falls, reduce crowd density and, if necessary, other CPU-heavy settings before lowering resolution further.

Meeting the recommended list does not mean every area will hold 60 FPS. It is a baseline for the game, not a location-by-location performance promise. CPU speed, GPU model, resolution, drivers, game version and the number of characters on screen all affect the result.

Choose the right upscaler

DLSS on compatible NVIDIA GPUs

Bethesda supports DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Reflex and DLSS Frame Generation on compatible NVIDIA hardware. Start with DLSS Quality. It renders internally below your display resolution and reconstructs the image, generally providing a better performance-to-sharpness balance than immediately selecting a more aggressive mode. Use Balanced only when Quality cannot meet your cap.

DLAA is an anti-aliasing mode rather than a performance mode; it uses the native-resolution image and therefore makes sense when the GPU has substantial headroom. DLSS Frame Generation should be evaluated separately from Super Resolution because it changes latency and frame pacing as well as the displayed frame count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FSR 3

FSR 3 combines upscaling with optional frame generation. Bethesda recommends VSync on when using FSR 3 with a variable-refresh-rate monitor. Use Quality first, then Balanced if needed. AMD’s integration guidance says frame generation works best when interpolating from at least 60 FPS, and inputs below 30 FPS should be avoided. FSR 3 can roughly double the displayed frame rate by inserting generated frames, but it cannot repair a slow simulation or a stuttering base rate.

XeSS

XeSS is another supported upscaler and is a practical choice on hardware where DLSS is unavailable or FSR 3 does not deliver the image you prefer. Begin at Quality and compare foliage, thin geometry and distant signage while standing still and while moving. The best choice is the one that reaches your cap without distracting reconstruction artifacts.

Render scale and sharpening

When an upscaler is enabled, let its Quality or Balanced mode control the internal resolution before making small render-scale changes. Lowering render scale in large jumps can create shimmer and soft text; adjust one step at a time and retest in the same scene.

The settings that buy the most frame rate

GamersNexus’ GPU-bound comparison framework labels a setting with a High impact when it changes performance by roughly 6–10 percent and Critical when the change is 10 percent or more on its test system. Those percentages are relative measurements, not universal results for every PC. Its largest levers include reflections, volumetric lighting and shadow quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting What it affects Recommended action
Shadow quality Resolution and filtering of character, object and environment shadows Use Medium first; move to Low if GPU frame time remains too high. Shadow changes are often visible, but they are usually less damaging to image clarity than lowering the entire resolution.
Volumetric lighting Fog, light shafts and atmospheric volume calculations Use Medium at 1080p or 1440p. At 4K, reduce this before textures when frame-time spikes occur.
Reflections Reflected geometry and lighting on wet, metallic or glossy surfaces Keep Medium or higher only when the GPU has headroom; lower it when GPU-bound scenes show large drops.
Crowd density Number of NPCs and associated CPU simulation in settlements Use Low or Medium for a city-focused 60-FPS target. Lower this before aggressively reducing image resolution when GPU usage is low in cities.
Texture quality Surface detail and VRAM use Keep High when the card has enough VRAM and there is no texture streaming problem. Lower it when you see memory pressure or hitching rather than as the first FPS fix.
Motion blur Camera-based blur during movement Disable it for a clearer, more responsive image. GamersNexus found no measured performance benefit from changing it in its comparison.
Film grain Noise overlay applied to the image Disable it if you want a cleaner image; it is primarily a presentation preference.
Depth of field Focus blur during cinematics and selected views Disable it for a consistently sharp image. Re-enable it if you prefer the cinematic effect.

Change one group at a time. A large preset switch obscures which setting fixed a problem and can unnecessarily reduce texture or lighting quality.

How to tune for a stable frame rate

  1. Pick a realistic cap. Choose 30, 40, 45, 60 or another rate your PC can maintain in the busiest settlement you regularly visit. A stable cap feels smoother than a 90-FPS peak that falls to the 40s in New Atlantis.
  2. Start with Custom. Apply the profile closest to your resolution and GPU, then set the individual options in the tables above.
  3. Set the upscaler to Quality. Walk through a demanding exterior and interior. If the GPU cannot reach the cap, move to Balanced before lowering several other options.
  4. Test a city, not just space. Spend several minutes moving through New Atlantis or Akila City, turning the camera and entering a busy area. Cities are commonly CPU-heavy, so this exposes the worst sustained frame time.
  5. Identify the bottleneck. High GPU utilization with long GPU frame times indicates a graphics limit; low GPU utilization with poor city performance points toward the CPU and crowd simulation.
  6. Lower the matching settings. For a GPU limit, reduce volumetric lighting, reflections and shadows. For a city CPU limit, lower crowd density first. Keep textures higher when VRAM is not the problem.
  7. Apply a cap. Use the in-game or driver limiter that gives the most consistent frame pacing on your display. Leave enough headroom that ordinary traversal does not constantly hit the limiter.
  8. Only then test frame generation. Confirm that the base rate is already healthy and that input response remains acceptable.

Frame generation: when it helps and when it hurts

Frame generation is a multiplier applied to an existing stream of rendered frames. It does not make a 25-FPS simulation behave like a native 60-FPS game. At a low base rate, generated frames can expose uneven motion, increase perceived latency and make artifacts more obvious.

  • Use FSR 3 frame generation only after the pre-interpolation rate is stable; AMD recommends at least 60 FPS and says to avoid inputs below 30 FPS.
  • For DLSS Frame Generation, Bethesda instructs players to turn VSync off while the feature is active so its benefit is visible.
  • For FSR 3 with a VRR display, Bethesda recommends VSync on. These are technology-specific instructions, not interchangeable rules.
  • Evaluate latency while aiming, inventory navigation and rapid camera turns, not only the counter in a quiet room.

If the base rate is 45 FPS and frame generation produces a higher displayed count, you may still feel the controls at roughly the base-rate latency. A native, capped rate is preferable whenever it is achievable without sacrificing too much image quality.

Diagnose GPU limits versus CPU-heavy cities

Signs of a GPU-bound scene

  • GPU utilization stays near its ceiling while frame time rises.
  • Lowering resolution or switching from Quality to Balanced produces a clear improvement.
  • Reducing volumetrics, reflections or shadows improves the same location.

Use the upscaler first, then reduce the high-impact visual settings in small steps. This preserves more detail than dropping every option to Low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs of a CPU-bound settlement

  • New Atlantis or Akila City runs much worse than open space even when GPU utilization is moderate.
  • Changing resolution has little effect on the city frame rate.
  • Lowering crowd density produces a larger gain than lowering reflections or texture quality.

Set crowd density to Low or Medium and cap the result to a rate the processor can sustain. A faster GPU cannot remove a CPU simulation bottleneck, so buying visual headroom through a lower internal resolution may not fix this particular drop.

SSD, driver and overlay checks

Bethesda’s support troubleshooting sequence is the fastest way to rule out common system causes:

  1. Install the game on an SSD. The SSD requirement applies to both the minimum and recommended specifications.
  2. Update the video driver. Install the current driver for the primary GPU, then restart Windows.
  3. Disable overlays while testing. Turn off Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar. Re-enable them individually later if performance is unchanged.
  4. Verify the game files. Use your launcher’s file-verification command to repair missing or corrupted data.
  5. Select the primary GPU. In Windows graphics settings or the driver control panel, ensure Starfield is assigned to the discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
  6. Check power behavior. Use a performance-oriented power setting when on a desktop or plugged-in laptop, and test again after closing background capture or monitoring tools.

Do not compare results until the game is running from the same drive, with the same driver state and the same overlays. Otherwise a settings change can appear to help when the real cause was storage or background software.

VRR, VSync and frame caps

A variable-refresh-rate monitor can hide small fluctuations when the frame rate remains inside its refresh window, but it cannot create missing frames. Set a cap below the display’s maximum refresh rate if that produces steadier pacing. Keep the synchronization choice paired with the technology you use: Bethesda’s guidance is VSync off for DLSS Frame Generation and VSync on for FSR 3 with VRR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you see tearing, test the cap and VSync combination in a busy settlement rather than in a menu. If you see judder despite a high counter, lower the cap until frame times stop oscillating. Consistency is the objective.

A repeatable benchmark routine

Use the same route after every change so your comparisons mean something:

  1. Load a save in New Atlantis or Akila City with ordinary NPC activity.
  2. Walk the same 60–90-second route, including a turn toward a crowded plaza and a transition into an interior.
  3. Record the sustained rate and the worst hitch, not only the highest number shown.
  4. Repeat once after a restart if shader or asset streaming made the first pass unusually poor.
  5. Make one change, repeat the route and keep the change only if it improves the capped experience without unacceptable image loss.

GamersNexus’ published settings comparisons are relative to its own test hardware. Use that work to identify likely high-impact controls, then verify the result on your CPU, GPU, resolution and game version.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the space FPS. Space scenes are often less demanding than settlements. Tune for the busiest location you actually play.
  • Enabling frame generation on a weak base rate. Generated frames cannot replace simulation performance; meet the pre-interpolation guidance first.
  • Dropping textures before diagnosing VRAM. Textures may have little effect on a CPU-bound city and can make the whole game look worse.
  • Copying VSync advice between technologies. DLSS Frame Generation and FSR 3 have different Bethesda recommendations.
  • Changing every option at once. You lose the ability to identify the setting responsible for an improvement or regression.
  • Assuming the recommended specification equals 60 FPS everywhere. Official requirements do not promise a universal frame rate.

What “smooth” should mean in Starfield

For one player, smooth means a locked 60 FPS; for another, it may be a consistent 40 or 45 FPS on a VRR display. Choose the cap first, then protect it in cities. Quality upscaling, medium shadows and volumetrics, controlled reflections, and reduced crowd density usually preserve more of Starfield’s visual character than a blanket Low preset. Once the base rate is stable, frame generation can increase the displayed fluidity—but it remains an optional finishing step, not the foundation of the configuration.
