For most new ARK survivors, the safest and most useful opening route is Parasaur → Trike → Pteranodon, with a Raptor added later if you want a fast combat mount. The Parasaur gives you low-risk mobility and general utility, the Trike adds stronger defense and berry gathering, and the Pteranodon transforms scouting and travel. A Raptor is a useful specialist, but it should not replace the gathering power of a Trike or the mobility of a flyer.
Your server’s settings, map, mods and balance updates can change spawn locations, taming speed and saddle timing. Use this as a standard-survival progression, then check the current creature information for your specific ruleset.

The best beginner tames at a glance
| Creature | Best beginner role | Main strength | Important limitation | When to target it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parasaur | First utility mount | Low-risk mobility and broad early utility | Less durable in combat than larger herbivores | First meaningful tame |
| Trike | Berry gathering and defense | Stronger protection and a practical gathering upgrade | Slower and less maneuverable than a flyer | After the Parasaur, when resources or defense become limiting |
| Pteranodon | Scouting, travel and taming support | Flight, speed, maneuverability and the ability to carry small creatures | Needs dedicated food, protection and support as a flyer | Early milestone after basic tools and a reliable food supply |
| Raptor | Optional combat and pursuit mount | Fast early hunting and travel | Narrower utility than the other three | Optional side tame after your basic utility is covered |
This order is not a claim that one creature has the highest overall score. The official creature pages publish base-stat tables, not a universal “best starter” ranking. The recommendation instead weighs risk, resource gathering, movement, combat durability and how long each tame remains useful.

What it solves immediately
A Parasaur is the safest first all-purpose tame for a new survivor. It provides a mount for moving around the early map and helps you support basic resource collection without committing to a difficult specialist. Beginner progression guides consistently place it among the first useful mounts, and the official creature reference includes early-game health, stamina, food, weight and movement information.
#1 Best Overall
- Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
- Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
- Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
That combination matters more than raw damage during your first hours. Walking everywhere exposes you to more wild creatures and makes every resource trip slower. A Parasaur lets you relocate between nearby resource areas, return home with less exposure and investigate the surrounding terrain while still keeping your first tame relatively manageable.
Its limits
The Parasaur is a utility animal, not a replacement for a dedicated defender. It has less combat durability than a larger herbivore, so do not use it as your answer to every hostile encounter. If a route is dangerous, clear the immediate area on foot or retreat rather than assuming your first mount can absorb the fight.
When it remains useful
Even after you add a Trike and a Pteranodon, a Parasaur can remain a convenient local transport option. Its value is consistency: it is available before flight, easier to integrate into a new base and useful whenever you want a general mount rather than a combat specialist or an aircraft.

Gathering and protection in one upgrade
Move to a Trike when your main problems become berries, carrying out resource trips and surviving threats near your base. Beginner progression sources commonly put the Triceratops immediately after the first utility tame because it combines stronger protection with better berry-gathering progression.
That dual role is important. Berries are not merely a food concern; they support several early crafting and taming tasks. A Trike lets you gather more efficiently while giving you a sturdier creature to keep nearby when the area around your shelter becomes harder to secure.

Trade-offs compared with the Parasaur
A Trike is slower and more cumbersome than a Pteranodon, and it cannot provide aerial scouting. It is therefore an upgrade in durability and gathering rather than a universal replacement for every mount. Keep using the creature that matches the job: the Trike for ground-based resource work and protection, the Parasaur for simple utility travel, and the flyer later for reconnaissance.
When to make it a priority
Target a Trike immediately after your first successful utility tame if you are spending most of your time collecting berries, defending a fixed base or moving through areas where a fragile mount feels unsafe. If your immediate goal is discovering the map rather than building a resource stockpile, you can work toward the Pteranodon sooner, but skipping the Trike leaves a noticeable gap in ground gathering and defense.

Flight, speed and scouting
The official ARK Community Wiki describes the Pteranodon as the first rideable flying creature. Its speed and maneuverability make it useful for scouting routes, checking terrain and reaching locations that are inconvenient or dangerous on foot. Flight also changes how you plan a journey: you can survey an area before committing your ground tames and avoid many obstacles that would slow a land mount.
The Pteranodon is more than a travel shortcut. The official description specifically highlights its use for baiting and leading wild creatures into a trap for taming. That makes it a taming-support tool as well as a scout: you can use its mobility to influence where a wild creature moves, provided you protect the flyer and keep enough room to maneuver.
Published base-stat examples
The official creature page lists the following Pteranodon wild base values: 210 health, 150 stamina, 1,200 food and 120 weight. These are game-data values, not a universal performance guarantee. The result you see depends on the creature’s level, the game version, the map and server settings, and any mods that alter creatures or progression.

What the Pteranodon cannot replace
A flyer is not a substitute for a berry gatherer or a durable ground defender. It also needs more support than a first land tame: you must protect it while it is grounded, manage its food and stamina, and avoid treating speed as invulnerability. Keep the Trike for ground work and use the Pteranodon where flight, scouting or controlled baiting provides a clear advantage.
Where the Raptor fits
A fast specialist
The Raptor is a reasonable optional tame when you want faster early hunting, pursuit or travel on the ground. Its official page documents a fast, lighter combat profile, which explains why it feels effective when chasing smaller targets or moving quickly between nearby locations.
Why it comes after the core three
Raptor utility is narrower. It does not replace a Parasaur’s broad early usefulness, a Trike’s berry gathering or a Pteranodon’s flight. A new survivor who chooses a Raptor first may still lack the gathering and scouting tools needed to build a stable base. Add one after your basic utility is covered, or choose it earlier only when combat speed is your immediate priority and you already have another way to gather resources.
A practical first-hours progression
- Secure a Parasaur. Treat it as your first meaningful tame and use it for safer movement and general early resource support. Do not expose it to fights that exceed its durability.
- Build toward a Trike. Make the Trike your next major ground objective when berry collection, carrying trips or local defense begin to consume most of your time.
- Prepare for a Pteranodon. Gather the basic tools and food supply needed to support a flyer, and make sure you have a protected place where it can remain safe when not in use. Exact saddle timing depends on your game version, map, server settings and mods.
- Use the Pteranodon for reconnaissance. Scout routes and potential destinations from the air. Its speed and maneuverability also let you lead wild creatures toward a prepared taming trap when the situation is controlled.
- Add a Raptor only for a defined reason. Choose it for fast combat or pursuit, not because it is a replacement for the other three roles.
- Reassess after each milestone. If gathering is the bottleneck, prioritize the Trike. If distance and information are the bottleneck, prioritize the Pteranodon. If you simply need reliable local transport, keep the Parasaur in service.
How to protect taming effectiveness
Taming effectiveness determines the bonus levels gained when the tame completes. In practical terms, a successful tame is not only about knocking out or controlling the creature; it is also about preserving the quality of the final result.
Keep the area under control
- Clear or avoid nearby threats before beginning the taming process.
- Stay close enough to respond if another wild creature approaches, but do not create unnecessary danger by fighting beside the unconscious target.
- Use terrain, barriers or a prepared enclosure when the location is exposed.
Minimize avoidable interruptions
Protect the creature while it is unconscious and avoid actions that force you to abandon the site. Server taming rates can shorten or lengthen the process, so a location that feels safe on one server may be impractical on another. Check the current rules for your map rather than assuming a standard timer.

Do not confuse speed with effectiveness
Faster taming settings change how long you wait; they do not make a careless location safe. Preserving effectiveness still requires keeping the target secure and preventing avoidable disruptions until the tame finishes.

Common beginner mistakes
Choosing damage before utility
A fast combat mount can feel exciting, but early progression usually stalls when you still lack gathering and travel tools. The Parasaur-to-Trike foundation solves more problems than a combat-only first choice.
Sending the first mount into every fight
The Parasaur is useful precisely because it is an accessible all-purpose tame, not because it has the durability of a larger herbivore. Retreat when a threat is beyond its role, then use the Trike for sturdier ground protection.
Flying before preparing support
A Pteranodon changes travel, but a flyer that is left exposed, exhausted or unsupported can become a liability. Prepare food, a safe landing area and a route back before making long scouting trips.

Settings, maps and updates matter
ARK is heavily configurable. Official and unofficial servers can use different taming speeds, resource rates, creature levels and progression rules. Maps also change which creatures are common and how safely you can reach them. Mods may alter stats, saddles or roles, while later balance updates can change practical usefulness.
For that reason, use the progression as a decision framework rather than a rigid schedule. On standard survival settings, Parasaur, Trike and Pteranodon form a dependable sequence. On a high-rate server, you may reach the flyer quickly and treat the Trike as a later convenience. On a dangerous map, the Trike’s defensive value may justify making it the first major objective after basic tools. Verify the current creature page and your server’s rules whenever a saddle, spawn or stat does not match expectations.
If you want to apply these settings on an ARK server, Godlike.Host provides ARK game-server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, a built-in mod installer and SFTP/FTP access.
Final recommendation
Start with a Parasaur for safe mobility and general utility. Follow it with a Trike when gathering and ground defense become the limiting factors. Make a Pteranodon your next major milestone for flight, scouting and taming support. Add a Raptor when you specifically want fast combat or pursuit. This sequence gives a new survivor coverage across movement, resources, defense and reconnaissance without asking one creature to perform every job.
