For most new survival worlds, start with a compact cabin or bunker built from materials you can gather nearby. It is a practical editorial pick—not a universal winner—because it keeps the build manageable and leaves room to add storage, a farm, or a mine connection. Choose a mushroom house, jungle treehouse, or underwater house when your world offers the right site and you want a more distinctive base.
What makes a good starter house?
A starter house should help you establish a secure place to sleep and organize basic survival tasks before you spend time on decoration. Build with resources already at hand, and leave space for the base to grow. Minecraft’s beginner hub links to guidance on building basics, preparing for night, surviving the first night, and making a first base.
- Nearby materials: A design is easier to begin when it uses blocks available where you settled.
- Usable interior: Reserve room for a bed, light, crafting, and storage.
- Room to expand: A small farm or future mine connection can make a starter structure more useful over time.
- Suitable site: Special builds may depend on a particular biome, tree, or water location.
These are practical comparison criteria, not a game-wide ranking. The examples below come from Minecraft’s feature on small starter bases and a PC Gamer roundup of house ideas; neither establishes a universally best design.
Which starter house should you build?
| House type | Why it can work | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Compact cabin | PC Gamer describes a single-pitch survival cabin as a small-footprint build using accessible materials. | You still need a suitable spot to clear; the example is associated with taiga scenery. |
| A-frame bunker | The roundup presents a spruce bunker as a simple option for new players. | The example uses spruce, so you may need to find it locally or travel. |
| Small wooden house | An 8×8 wooden house is presented as a quick, easy starter form. | That footprint belongs to the example; it is not a universal minimum or a tested optimum. |
| Mushroom house | Minecraft’s official feature uses an existing giant mushroom as part of the structure, reducing the walls you need to build; it calls this the easiest of its three concepts. | It is the smallest of those three concepts and depends on finding a suitable giant mushroom. |
| Jungle treehouse | The official concept uses vines to climb a jungle tree, then adds a platform, house, light, bed, and storage. | You need jungle terrain and a workable site among trees; the suggested vine access and treetop farm are design-specific. |
| Underwater house | The official feature highlights underwater views and separation from common land-based mobs outside the house. | You need a suitable water location, and the feature notes that expansion is tricky. Its fish-and-coral scenery example is tied to a tropical biome. |

How to choose a design for your world
- Check your nearby resources. Prefer a cabin or small wooden structure if its materials are easy to gather where you are. A spruce bunker is less convenient if spruce is not available nearby.
- Look at the terrain before committing. A giant mushroom, jungle canopy, or suitable underwater location is a prerequisite for the corresponding concept, not something every starting area provides.
- Plan the useful interior first. Make room for a bed, light, crafting, and storage before adding decorative details.
- Leave an expansion path. Decide where a small farm, extra storage, or mine connection could go so the first build does not have to serve as your permanent layout.
- Choose the look after the practical fit. If two designs both suit your materials and site, pick the one you will enjoy building and using.
What to prioritize in the first build
Focus first on a secure shelter and a workable survival setup, then add details as resources allow. The official treehouse concept specifically includes light, a bed, and storage; the official feature also describes small bases that can accommodate little farms and leave room to expand. Treat those as useful design suggestions rather than a required block-by-block plan.
Build quantities vary by tutorial and design. One video listing surfaced for a particular starter-house tutorial specifies 285 oak planks and 225 oak logs, among many other items; those are that creator’s quantities for that build, not a general starter inventory. The source result was not independently inspected, so it should not be treated as a verified material guide for other houses.
