Maximum Health is the best first stat for most Valor Mortis players. It gives you more room to learn enemy timings and recover from mistakes. Put your next Catalysts into Maximum Stamina or Melee Damage, then specialize around your main damage source: swords, firearms, or Transmutations.

How stat leveling and Catalysts work
At every Lantern, you spend Catalysts to gain a level. Each level grants exactly one stat-upgrade pick. Unspent Catalysts remain in your current balance: if you die, they drop at the death location, and a second death before recovery can remove them permanently.
- Reach a Lantern after collecting Catalysts.
- Open the level-up screen and purchase the next level.
- Select one available stat upgrade.
- Repeat before entering a boss arena or an unfamiliar exploration stretch.
Banking Catalysts is part of the build strategy, not just housekeeping. Spending before a dangerous section prevents a failed attempt from deleting progress that could have become health, stamina or damage.

Maximum Health adds 10 maximum Health points per published upgrade. Its value is immediate: every attack you survive gives you another chance to heal, reposition or learn a pattern. When to choose Maximum Stamina instead
Maximum Stamina increases maximum Endurance by 6 points per upgrade. Endurance pays for dodges, blocks and attacks, so the stat improves both offense and defense without requiring a particular weapon. The database also places firearm damage in the Endurance archetype, making stamina an important foundation for marksman builds.
Choose it as your second purchase when you regularly run out of stamina during a combo, cannot afford a defensive dodge after attacking, or plan to use firearms as your main damage source. Stamina is less valuable if you rarely spend the full bar or rely almost entirely on Transmutations.

Melee: build around uptime and punish windows
Recommended order
- Melee Damage: raises the payoff from every safe sword hit and shortens encounters.
- Maximum Health: adds the survivability needed to learn close-range spacing.
- Critical Damage: improves the reward when your weapon or opening produces a critical.
- Parrying Impact: adds 6% Posture damage per published upgrade, helping you create stagger opportunities.
- Melee Stamina Cost: keeps attacks affordable after repeated dodges, blocks and parries.
Melee has the highest execution demand of the three routes: you must stay within strike range, manage stamina and recognize parry windows. Blocking is a useful bridge while learning; its published upgrade reduces blocking cost by 6% and reduces damage taken while blocking by 6%.
Firearms: precision plus an ammunition plan
Recommended order
- Maximum Stamina: supports repositioning and belongs to the Endurance group that also covers firearm damage.
- Headshot Damage: rewards accurate targeting and makes precision shots your most efficient attacks.
- Critical Damage: increases burst when a critical opportunity appears.
- Maximum Health: protects you when enemies close the distance or a shot misses.
- Ammunition Drop Chance: reduces the risk of running dry during long routes.
Firearms lower the need to stand beside an enemy, but they exchange some melee pressure for precision and ammunition management. If your accuracy is inconsistent, move Maximum Health ahead of Headshot Damage until you can survive a mistake and still finish the encounter.

- Nephtoglobin Sufferance: adds 10 maximum Nephtoglobin Sufferance per published upgrade.
- Transmutation Damage: raises the direct damage of your abilities.
- Status Buildup: reaches status thresholds sooner, improving the value of repeated casts.
- Maximum Health: provides a safety margin while you manage ability timing and resource limits.
- Nephtoglobin Extraction: returns 30% more Nephtoglobin per melee hit, according to the published upgrade effect.
This route has a different resource loop from sword or gun play. Nephtoglobin Sufferance increases how much of the resource you can hold; Extraction helps refill it through melee hits. If you cast constantly but rarely enter melee range, prioritize the capacity and damage upgrades before Extraction.

The Valor Mortis DB’s 2026 progression table shows how quickly Catalyst requirements rise. The pick count is one fewer than the level because the table starts at the initial level.

- Die while learning patterns: take Maximum Health.
- Run out of stamina before a punish or escape: take Maximum Stamina.
- Survive comfortably but fights drag on: take the damage stat matching your weapon or ability.
- Use parries as your main opening: add Parrying Impact after core health and damage.
- Rely on status effects: add Status Buildup after Transmutation Damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I ever level damage before Maximum Health?
Yes. If you already know enemy patterns, rarely take damage and your fights are ending too slowly, Melee Damage, Headshot Damage or Transmutation Damage can be the better next purchase. For a blind first run, health remains the safer opening.
