For many PC gamers, the practical answer is to use more than one service: keep DRM-free games in a GOG collection, claim or buy selected titles elsewhere, and use a subscription for games you only want to play temporarily. Installing several launchers is less important than understanding which account actually licenses each game.

GOG: the strongest Steam alternative for ownership and preservation
Why GOG stands out
GOG describes itself as “a home for building and playing your curated game collection” and a digital distribution platform that puts gamers first and respects their need to own games. Its defining model is DRM-free distribution. When a specific edition is supplied as an offline installer, you can keep that installer and install the game without depending on a continuing store connection.
That distinction matters for long-term access. A DRM-free installer can be archived, moved to another drive, or used on a compatible computer without signing into a client every time. It is particularly useful for older games whose original discs, activation servers, or legacy launchers are no longer convenient. “DRM-free” describes the copy and its delivery terms, not a guarantee that every game supports every modern operating system, mod, peripheral, or multiplayer service.
Is GOG Galaxy required?
No. GOG’s developer documentation says GOG GALAXY is optional. You can download, update, and play supported games without interacting with the client by using the downloads associated with your account. Galaxy can still be useful if you prefer automatic updates, a consolidated library, or client-based convenience, but it is not the condition for owning a GOG release.

- You want offline installers rather than a license that must be checked by a client.
- You collect classic PC games and value versions prepared for current hardware and operating systems.
- You expect to reinstall years later, including on a computer that is rarely online.
- You prefer a one-time purchase over a recurring subscription.
What to verify before buying on GOG
Read the individual product page and included files. Confirm whether the edition contains the expansions, language files, multiplayer components, or bonus content you need. An offline installer does not automatically provide online multiplayer, cross-play, cloud saves, achievements, or community features. Those are properties of the particular game and edition. Keep a local backup of installers and record the account used for the purchase; DRM-free delivery reduces dependency on a launcher but does not remove the need to retrieve a purchase from the account in the first place.

Epic Games Store: a mainstream catalog and frequent promotions
Why players choose Epic
Epic Games Store is the most direct alternative when you want a general-purpose PC storefront with major releases, Epic-published titles, and a large user base. Epic’s current distribution page reports more than 295 million users; that figure is from the page crawled in 2026 and can change as the service grows. A large audience can make a storefront an important destination for major launches, but it does not tell you whether a specific game is suitable for offline play or whether it requires another account.
Promotions are another reason to maintain an Epic account. Free-game campaigns and discounts can make it worthwhile even if you buy most games elsewhere. A claimed promotion is attached to the account and subject to the offer’s terms; it should not be treated as a DRM-free download or a guarantee that the title remains available outside the Epic client.
Epic’s developer economics
Epic’s 2025 announcement says its documented developer terms provide 100% of the first $1 million in net revenue per product per year, followed by an 88% developer share and 12% store share. That is a platform-level commercial term, not a promise about a game’s price, quality, availability, or the amount a particular developer ultimately receives after other costs. It helps explain why some publishers and developers choose Epic, but it should not determine your purchase by itself.
When Epic is the right choice
- You want current mainstream releases in addition to games available on other stores.
- You regularly check free-game and discount promotions.
- You already use an Epic account for an Epic-published title or another service tied to it.
- You are comfortable using the Epic client and checking each game’s own online and account requirements.
Limitations to account for
Storefront availability is not the same as universal access. A title can require an additional publisher account, a separate launcher, an online connection for some modes, or a particular edition. Before buying, inspect the product page for DRM, activation, multiplayer, operating-system, and controller information. Prices, promotions, and regional catalogs change, so an offer seen in one country or month should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

itch.io: the best place to discover independent and experimental games
What makes itch.io different
itch.io calls itself an open marketplace for independent digital creators with a focus on independent video games. That description explains both its strength and its variety: it is a place to find tiny prototypes, game-jam entries, experimental narratives, freeware, tools, commercial indies, and projects that may never appear in a large mainstream store.
Pricing is unusually flexible. Projects can be free, paid, or pay what you want. A pay-what-you-want page may let you enter more than the minimum, while another project may have a fixed price; read the creator’s terms before downloading. Because creators control distribution, two games on the same marketplace can have completely different installers, update systems, documentation, and support expectations.
How to choose safely on itch.io
- Read the project page. Check the supported operating systems, architecture, controls, accessibility notes, and whether the download is a standalone file, archive, installer, or browser game.
- Check the project’s status. A game-jam build or prototype may be complete enough to play but may not receive future updates.

PC Game Pass: access over permanent ownership
PC Game Pass suits players who want to sample many games without buying each one outright. The subscription model trades permanent ownership for access while the membership and a title’s catalog rights remain active. This can be efficient for a campaign you expect to finish once, a game you want to try before deciding whether to purchase it, or a rotating selection of releases.

Treat the current listing for your country and plan as the authority. A game can leave the catalog, appear only on a particular plan, or have features that differ between PC and console. Add-on ownership, save compatibility, multiplayer requirements, and an eventual purchase are separate questions from whether the base game is currently included.

Choose Game Pass when
- You value breadth and sampling more than keeping every game permanently.
- You play enough included titles for a recurring fee to make sense.
- You want to test a game before deciding whether to buy it elsewhere or keep playing through the subscription.
Check before subscribing
- Open the current PC Game Pass listing for your region.
- Confirm the plan, platform, catalog entry, language, and feature notes for the exact game.
- Check whether multiplayer, a publisher account, or another launcher is required.
- Consider how you will continue playing if the title leaves the catalog.
Publisher launchers: useful companions, not complete Steam replacements
Ubisoft Connect
Ubisoft Connect is centered on Ubisoft’s own ecosystem. Ubisoft documents library management, rewards, discounts, and recommendations, which can make it the natural home for someone who primarily plays that publisher’s releases. It is not designed as a neutral, all-publisher catalog, so its value depends on how much of your library comes from Ubisoft.
Battle.net and EA’s app
Battle.net and EA’s app serve a similar publisher-specific role. They matter when a game is distributed through its publisher’s account and services, but they are not broad replacements for a storefront with unrelated publishers and independent creators. A title bought through another store can still require one of these publisher accounts or clients; check the game’s activation notes before purchase.
Why publisher ecosystems remain relevant
Some games use a publisher launcher for authentication, updates, friends lists, or live-service features regardless of where you bought the initial license. In that situation, installing the publisher client is part of the game’s requirements, not evidence that one store is universally better. Keep track of which account owns the license and which account supplies online services.

Can you play PC games without Steam?

Whether you can play a particular title without Steam depends on its edition and technical requirements. Use this decision process before you install:
- Identify the license source. Write down the store or publisher account that will own the game.
- Read the requirements for that edition. Look for launcher, DRM, activation, operating-system, and persistent-online notes.
- Separate single-player from service features. Offline campaign play may work even when multiplayer, cloud saves, or achievements need an account or connection.
- Check region and timing. Catalog membership, prices, promotions, and subscription availability can change by country and date.

Using Xbox as a library convenience layer
The Xbox app can reduce launcher clutter without merging your licenses. Xbox says its aggregated PC library can display installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading storefronts in one place. That is a discovery and launching convenience: it does not transfer ownership, combine refund policies, or make one account the legal owner of games purchased elsewhere.
Use the Xbox library view to find installed games, then remember that updates, authentication, cloud saves, and support may still be handled by the original storefront or publisher client. - Want to sample a catalog? Compare the current PC Game Pass listing, plan, region, and exit strategy if a title leaves.
- Mostly play one publisher? Use that publisher’s launcher, such as Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, or EA’s app, while accepting that its catalog is specialized.
- Want one screen for installed games? Use Xbox’s aggregated library as a convenience layer, but keep the original ownership and launcher accounts clear.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
