The most reliable Remote Play arrangement is simple: connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet, connect the Steam Deck to the router’s 5 GHz Wi‑Fi network, and remove competing traffic before you change video settings. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum, but recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. Stable latency, low jitter, clean Wi‑Fi and a usable NAT matter as much as the headline speed shown by an internet test.
The recommended setup at a glance
Remote Play sends the PS5’s video and audio to the Steam Deck while sending your controls back to the console. Every part of that round trip must remain usable. A fast internet package cannot compensate for wireless interference, queueing from a large download, or a router that cannot establish the required connection.

| Component | Best setting | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 connection | Ethernet to the home router | Lower, more consistent latency and fewer radio-related interruptions than Wi‑Fi. |
| Steam Deck connection | Router’s 5 GHz SSID, preferably 802.11ac or newer | Usually less congested than 2.4 GHz, with higher practical throughput at short range. |
| Internet capacity | At least 5 Mbps up/down; 15 Mbps up/down recommended | Matches PlayStation’s published minimum and best-performance guidance. |
| Other household traffic | Pause large downloads, cloud backups and high-bitrate streaming | Prevents queues and packet loss from competing with the game stream. |
| Remote Play quality | Start high, then reduce resolution or frame rate only when needed | Lower quality reduces the amount of data and processing required when the link is weak. |
| NAT | Usable NAT; avoid Type 3 or “NAT type unavailable” | Restrictive address translation or firewall rules can block Remote Play, especially away from home. |
Why latency and jitter matter more than a speed-test headline
Download and upload speed describe capacity, not responsiveness. Remote Play is interactive: a button press travels to the PS5, the console renders a frame, and the encoded image travels back. A connection that briefly adds 100 milliseconds of delay, reorders packets or drops bursts can feel worse than a slower connection that remains consistent.

Latency is the time required for packets to travel between devices. Your PS5 and Deck may have very low latency inside the home, but a wireless hop, a distant access point or an overloaded router can add delay. Ethernet removes the PS5’s radio hop, which is why Sony describes Ethernet as “the fastest and most reliable way to connect your PlayStation to your home network.”

Jitter and packet loss
Jitter is variation in latency. The stream may look smooth for several seconds and then stutter when packets arrive late or out of order. Packet loss forces retransmission or causes visible blockiness and audio gaps. These problems are often caused by interference or queueing rather than insufficient ISP speed.
Bufferbloat and competing traffic
A large upload, game download or cloud backup can fill the router’s queues. Remote Play traffic then waits behind those packets, producing controls that feel delayed. Pause demanding traffic first; buying a faster plan is not the first fix when the bottleneck is queue management inside the home.
Connect the PS5 by Ethernet
Use a standard Cat6 Ethernet cable from the PS5’s LAN port to a LAN port on your router. Cat6 is a normal, widely available cable specification; a special gaming cable is not required. If the router is in another room, run the cable safely along a wall or use a properly installed network outlet rather than leaving it where it can be pulled loose.
- Turn off or wake the PS5 and plug one end of the Cat6 cable into the console’s LAN port.
- Plug the other end into a LAN port on the main router or the wired network switch connected to it.
- On the PS5, open Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select the wired connection and choose Connect or the automatic setup option.
- Run Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection.
The console can still use Remote Play over a wireless home network if Ethernet is impossible, but wiring the console removes one variable and generally gives the most stable local path. If the PS5 is connected to a secondary wireless extender, the benefit depends on that extender’s own backhaul; a wired run to the main router is preferable.
Put the Steam Deck on a clean 5 GHz network
On the Deck, select the router’s 5 GHz network name rather than the 2.4 GHz SSID when signal strength is good. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance explicitly says to use 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, and Steam recommends 5 GHz because the 2.4 GHz band is commonly congested. Steam also recommends 802.11ac, with 5 GHz 802.11n as the next-best option.

Choose the right band in SteamOS
- Open the Steam Deck’s quick-access menu and select the wireless icon, or open Settings → Internet.
- Choose the SSID identified by your router as 5 GHz. If both bands share one name, temporarily separate the SSIDs in the router so you can verify which band the Deck uses.
- Enter the Wi‑Fi password and confirm that the Deck reports a strong connection.
- Play in the same room as the access point for a test. Move farther away only after you have confirmed that the short-range setup is stable.
Five gigahertz generally has less interference and more available capacity, but it does not travel through walls as well as 2.4 GHz. A weak 5 GHz signal can perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz signal. If the Deck loses packets at your normal playing location, move the router or add a properly placed access point rather than insisting on a barely usable 5 GHz signal.
Reduce wireless interference
- Keep the router away from enclosed cabinets, dense metal objects and other radio transmitters.
- Do not place the Deck immediately beside a microwave oven, cordless-phone base or crowded USB wireless device.
- Update the router firmware before diagnosing intermittent stutter.
- If the router offers channel selection, use a less congested 5 GHz channel; leave channel width on an automatic or conservative setting if a wider channel causes instability.
Meet the speed requirement, then test stability
PlayStation publishes 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum for Remote Play. Its best-performance recommendation is at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. These figures apply to the connection available to the Remote Play session; they are not a promise that every Wi‑Fi environment will feel smooth at those rates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Measured capacity | How to interpret it | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Below 5 Mbps in either direction | Below PlayStation’s published minimum. | Stop other traffic and retest. If the result remains low, the connection itself is unsuitable until its capacity improves. |
| 5–15 Mbps in both directions | Meets the minimum but leaves less headroom for overhead and competing use. | Use Ethernet for the PS5, strong 5 GHz for the Deck, and pause other heavy traffic. |
| 15 Mbps or more in both directions | Meets PlayStation’s best-performance recommendation, subject to latency and stability. | Investigate Wi‑Fi interference, jitter, NAT and router queueing if stutter remains. |
Run the PS5 test at Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. For a useful comparison, repeat it while another device is downloading. A large change under load indicates congestion or queueing, not simply a lack of nominal bandwidth.
Stop competing traffic before you play
Pause console and PC downloads, cloud-synchronization jobs, video uploads, security-camera backups and high-bitrate streaming on other devices. PlayStation warns that devices using large amounts of bandwidth can disrupt Remote Play. Steam similarly advises removing other sources of wireless interference and prioritizing the streaming devices when the router supports QoS or device-priority controls.
Use QoS or device priority carefully
Router menus differ, but the feature may be called Quality of Service, Device Priority or Traffic Prioritization. Assign priority to both the PS5 and the Deck if the router allows multiple devices. This does not create extra bandwidth; it helps the router serve interactive packets ahead of bulk transfers. Verify the result with an actual Remote Play session rather than assuming that enabling a checkbox fixed the problem.

Check NAT and firewall behavior
NAT determines how devices behind your router are represented to the wider internet. PlayStation warns that NAT Type 3, or an unavailable NAT type, may prevent Remote Play. This is especially important when connecting to the PS5 from outside your home; a local Deck-to-PS5 session can work even when remote access is blocked.
- On the PS5, open Settings → Network → Connection Status → View Connection Status and note the NAT type.
- If the type is 3 or unavailable, restart the router and PS5, then test again.
- Check whether the router is behind another router or carrier-grade NAT. Two layers of address translation can prevent inbound connections.
- Review the router’s firewall and UPnP setting. Use the router’s documented controls rather than opening random ports.
- PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play. If manual firewall configuration is necessary, follow the router and PlayStation guidance for that port and avoid exposing unrelated services.
Do not disable the entire firewall as a first troubleshooting step. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, you may need a publicly reachable connection or another supported network arrangement; ask the provider what inbound options are available.
Adjust Remote Play quality only after network basics
Quality controls cannot repair packet loss, a weak signal or a blocked NAT, but they can make a marginal connection usable. Sony advises testing lower Remote Play quality when the connection is weak:
| Setting | Use when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution: Standard (540p) | The stream stutters at higher resolution but the link is otherwise stable. | Less detail than a high-resolution stream, with lower data demand. |
| Resolution: Low (360p) | Severe instability remains after removing competing traffic. | Most reliable data load among the listed options, but visibly softer image quality. |
| Frame rate: Standard | The connection cannot sustain a higher frame-rate mode. | Less motion fluidity, but reduced demand and fewer spikes. |
For PS5 and PS4 Pro, Sony notes that up to 1080p may be selected automatically according to connection quality, so the app may not expose exactly the same manual controls available on PS4. If a setting is missing, use the controls that your current console and client version actually display instead of treating the absence as a fault.
A complete setup and troubleshooting sequence
- Establish the physical path: wire the PS5 to the router and connect the Deck to the 5 GHz SSID.
- Confirm software basics: install available PS5 system, SteamOS and router-firmware updates, then restart the router and both devices.
- Test without load: pause downloads and streaming, run the PS5 connection test, and try Remote Play near the router.
- Test normal distance: move the Deck to your usual seat. If stutter appears only there, improve 5 GHz coverage or relocate the access point.
- Check NAT: record the NAT type and investigate Type 3 or unavailable results before changing game settings.
- Enable prioritization: prioritize the PS5 and Deck if your router provides QoS or device priority.
- Reduce quality: select 540p Standard, then 360p Low if necessary, and keep frame rate at Standard while diagnosing.
- Reintroduce traffic: one device at a time. The activity that brings the stutter back identifies the competing load.
Diagnose the symptom instead of guessing
Controls feel delayed but the picture is clear
Suspect latency or queueing. Stop uploads and downloads, test with the PS5 wired, and check whether the delay changes when the Deck is moved closer to the access point. If the delay occurs only outside your home, investigate NAT and the quality of the remote network.

The picture breaks into blocks or freezes briefly
Suspect packet loss, interference or jitter. Confirm the Deck is on 5 GHz, move it into stronger coverage, update router firmware and remove nearby sources of interference. Lowering resolution helps only after the radio link is reasonably stable.
Audio cuts out with the video
Audio and video interruptions together usually indicate a transport problem rather than an in-game graphics option. Repeat the test with other traffic paused and compare wired-PS5 versus wireless-PS5 behavior.
Remote Play cannot connect at all
Check that the PS5 is powered on or in a Remote Play-compatible rest state, that the same account is configured, and that the PS5 reports a usable internet connection. Then inspect NAT and firewall behavior, including UDP 8572. Repeatedly changing resolution will not fix a blocked connection.
It works beside the router but not in another room
This points to 5 GHz coverage or interference. Reposition the router or add a wired access point where possible. A mesh system can help with difficult layouts, but its result depends on node placement and backhaul; it is not a guaranteed cure for every stutter.

Consider a dual-band Wi‑Fi 6 or 802.11ac router with QoS when the existing router cannot prioritize devices, has poor 5 GHz coverage, lacks current firmware support or becomes unstable under simultaneous traffic. Upgrade for a demonstrated coverage or congestion problem, not simply because a newer Wi‑Fi label promises smoother play. A wired access point or Ethernet run may be a better answer in a home with thick walls.

Local play versus playing away from home
At home, the Deck and PS5 can communicate through the local router even when the ISP connection is not involved in the same way as an outside session. Away from home, the traffic must cross the internet in both directions, so upload capacity at the PS5’s home connection becomes particularly important. NAT, firewall rules and the quality of the remote Wi‑Fi or mobile connection also become decisive. Test from the actual location where you intend to play; a perfect home test does not establish that a hotel or public network will permit Remote Play.
Practical pre-session checklist
- PS5 connected by Ethernet to the main router.
- Steam Deck connected to the router’s 5 GHz SSID with a strong signal.
- PS5 connection test completed successfully.
- At least 5 Mbps upload and download available; 15 Mbps in each direction preferred.
- Downloads, cloud backups and high-bitrate streams paused.
- Router firmware and device software current.
- NAT is not Type 3 or unavailable.
- QoS or device priority enabled when congestion requires it.
- Remote Play quality lowered only after the network path has been checked.
Questions readers commonly ask
Is Ethernet required for the PS5?
No, but it is the preferred connection. Sony calls Ethernet the fastest and most reliable way to connect the PlayStation to a home network, and Steam recommends a wired network whenever the Remote Play client supports it.
Is 5 GHz always better than 2.4 GHz?
No. Five gigahertz is usually less congested and is the recommended band when its signal is strong, but its shorter range means a weak 5 GHz connection can perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need 15 Mbps internet for every Remote Play session?
PlayStation’s published minimum is 5 Mbps in both directions. It recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance, but latency, jitter, interference and competing traffic still determine how the session feels.
Should I open UDP 8572 manually?
Only if your network requires manual firewall configuration and you are following the router and PlayStation instructions. First check NAT, router layering and UPnP behavior; do not open unrelated ports or disable the whole firewall.
Will lowering resolution eliminate all stutter?
No. Lowering to 540p Standard or 360p Low reduces stream demand when the connection is weak, but it cannot correct a blocked NAT, severe interference or a saturated router queue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam Deck use Remote Play over a wired connection?
Steam recommends a wired network when the Remote Play client supports it. If your Deck is docked with a reliable Ethernet adapter, compare that path with 5 GHz Wi‑Fi; the wired option removes the Deck’s wireless hop but is not necessary for a strong, stable 5 GHz connection.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does Remote Play stutter only when someone else starts a download?
The download can fill the router’s queues, creating bufferbloat and jitter. Pause the transfer or use QoS/device priority for the PS5 and Deck; a faster internet plan is not guaranteed to solve queueing inside the home.
