The safest Steam Deck purchases are the games marked Verified; the next-best choices are Playable games whose store page tells you exactly which small adjustment is needed. The current Valve compatibility filter includes Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors, Cuphead, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, Left 4 Dead 2, Overcooked!, Rain World, Mortal Kombat 11, It Takes Two, Castle Crashers, Golf With Your Friends and Age of Wonders 4, among many others. Use the list below to match a game to your session length, preferred controls and tolerance for setup, then confirm the live badge, price and online requirements on that game’s Steam Store page before buying.
What the Steam Deck badges actually mean
Valve’s rating is a compatibility signal, not a quality score. The Steam Store and your library show a rating intended to indicate the experience you can expect on Steam Deck. A game marked Verified meets Valve’s current checks for a straightforward handheld experience. A game marked Playable works, but may require a manual step such as selecting an on-screen keyboard, changing a control, or using a text size that is less comfortable on the built-in display.

Valve’s Steam Deck booklet describes the distinction plainly: games that work great are marked “Verified,” while games that work but may need a few manual steps are marked “Playable.” The same booklet says the catalogue available through the store contains over 30,000 titles (a 2022-era figure). A later SteamDB count reported more than 25,000 Verified or Playable games in 2026. Those figures use different dates and denominators, so they are context rather than one exact current total.

How to check a game before you buy
- Open the individual game page in the Steam Store, not only a search-result list or a recommendation article.
- Find the Steam Deck Compatibility panel and note whether the current label is Verified or Playable.
- If it is Playable, expand the panel and read the unmet requirement. Record whether the issue concerns controls, text, a launcher, an online component or another manual step.
- Scroll through the store page for controller information, supported languages and any online requirement. A badge does not promise that every menu, local mode or multiplayer feature is equally convenient.
- Check the current price and edition name immediately before purchase. Prices, review percentages, compatibility labels and newly added games can change.
- After installation, launch once while connected to the internet, complete any first-run setup and test the exact control or display issue identified by Valve.
Best picks at a glance
All of the games in this table appear in Valve’s current Verified-or-Playable compatibility-filtered results. The exact badge can change, so “live label” means you should confirm the individual store page. Battery descriptions are planning guidance based on the game’s format, not laboratory runtime measurements.
| Game | Best for | Live badge | Controls and text | Performance and battery planning | Online or setup friction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vampire Survivors | Very short repeatable runs | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Simple movement and targeting; little reading during action | Usually a lighter-looking 2D workload; effects can become busy late in a run | Primarily suited to quick solo sessions; confirm the current page for mode requirements |
| Stardew Valley | Relaxed, low-pressure play | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Controller-friendly routine actions; small text and dense menus deserve a test | Generally modest demands; long sessions make brightness and suspend behavior more important than peak performance | Check whether the mode you want is local or online and read the current compatibility note |
| Cuphead | Precision action | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Excellent candidate for a physical gamepad; timing leaves little room for an awkward layout | Fast 2D action should be easy to run, but sustained effects can increase load | Solo or shared play is possible depending on mode; verify the current controller note |
| Castle Crashers | Quick beat-’em-up co-op | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Simple action inputs are easy to map; check local multiplayer prompts | Typically a light session profile; several players and effects add visual activity | Best when you know whether you need local or online multiplayer |
| Overcooked! | Short, social co-op rounds | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Readable actions matter more than tiny strategic text; test the complete party setup | Usually suitable for short handheld sessions; four-player activity can be busier | Multiplayer setup is the main variable; verify the edition and connection requirements |
| It Takes Two | Two-player campaign | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Designed around two active controllers; inspect any text or launcher caveat | A more elaborate 3D game is a higher-demand choice than the 2D picks | Plan for the required online or local arrangement before purchase |
| Left 4 Dead 2 | Replayable action with friends | Verify current Verified/Playable label | First-person aiming benefits from careful stick sensitivity and button checks | Older 3D technology is a sensible Deck workload, but multiplayer sessions can be longer | Online play is central; confirm current server, account and compatibility details |
| Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | Long-form role-playing | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Many abilities, inventories and dialogue windows make text size and cursor behavior important | Long 3D sessions are a larger battery commitment than a simple arcade game | Check how the current build handles controller navigation and any online co-op requirement |
| Age of Wonders 4 | Turn-based strategy | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Menus and map information are the critical test; use the compatibility note to judge readability | Turn-based pacing lets you pause, but a detailed 3D map can be more demanding | Confirm campaign, multiplayer and any account or launcher step on the live page |
| Mortal Kombat 11 | Fighting-game sessions | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Physical controls are a strong fit; menu and story text should be checked at handheld distance | 3D presentation and effects suggest a higher demand than 2D indies | Check online modes, sign-in requirements and any edition-specific content |
| Rain World | Exploration and survival challenge | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Movement is demanding; remapping and comfort should be tested before a long session | A 2D presentation is not the same as an easy game or guaranteed low load | Mostly a solo-focused choice; read the current page for any input caveat |
| Golf With Your Friends | Casual competitive rounds | Verify current Verified/Playable label | Simple aiming benefits from a stable controller profile; check small score or lobby text | Short courses are easy to suspend between turns; online groups may extend sessions | Multiplayer and party-size requirements should be confirmed before inviting friends |
Best for short sessions and repeated runs
Vampire Survivors
This is the clearest recommendation when you want a game that can be started, played for a short run and suspended without committing to a chapter. Its loop asks you to move, survive escalating enemy waves and make upgrade choices, so the controls are less menu-heavy than an RPG. The built-in screen should remain comfortable for the action itself; pause and upgrade screens are the places to check if you find small text tiring.
The low-complexity visual style makes it a sensible first game for a Deck library, but do not confuse that with a guaranteed battery figure. Late-run effects can become visually dense, and no runtime measurement is established here. Use the performance overlay if you want to compare your own settings, and lower brightness before changing graphics when the game already runs smoothly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCuphead
Cuphead belongs on the Deck of anyone who values precise, self-contained action. A physical gamepad is the natural control method, and the short boss attempts fit a commute or a ten-minute break. The trade-off is strict timing: a control issue that would be harmless in a slower game can make a Playable caveat immediately noticeable. If the store page identifies a required mapping step, perform it before judging the game.
Its 2D presentation generally makes it easier to plan for than a large 3D production, although animated effects still create a busy scene. Treat it as a higher-attention game rather than a background activity: suspend it between attempts only after checking that the current run resumes correctly.

Castle Crashers
Castle Crashers is a compact choice for side-scrolling action with friends. Its basic attacks, jumps and character abilities are easier to understand on a small controller than a game with dozens of contextual commands. The main decision is not performance but group setup: determine whether your intended session is local, online or a mixture, then confirm that the current store page describes the mode you need.
Best for calm or low-pressure play
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is the strongest fit here for players who want to play at their own pace. Farming, exploration, crafting and relationship activities break naturally into short tasks, while a longer in-game day can become a relaxed evening session. Controller navigation is usually straightforward for movement and tool use, but inventories, calendars and dialogue put more pressure on text readability than the action games above.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before buying, check the current language and compatibility information and decide whether you need local or online cooperative play. A compatibility badge does not tell you which farm arrangement is most convenient on a handheld. If the game is Playable because of a menu or text issue, try that screen at your normal viewing distance rather than assuming the caveat is harmless.
Rain World
Rain World suits players who want exploration and survival rather than a comforting farming routine. Its world rewards observation and patience, but movement and timing can be demanding. That makes controller feel more important than the fact that the presentation is primarily 2D. Spend a few minutes moving, climbing and escaping danger before committing to a long save.
Because the game is built around uncertainty and discovery, a Playable note about input or text can affect the whole experience. Read the exact unmet requirement on the store page, and do not infer that a visually simple game will automatically have low battery use or effortless controls.

Best co-op and party games
Overcooked!
Overcooked! works best when the Deck is treated as a shared screen for short, energetic rounds. The important test is whether every player can identify the required action quickly and whether the edition you are considering supports the group arrangement you have in mind. Readability matters less than in a strategy game, but crowded kitchens and multiple prompts can expose an awkward button layout.
Expect session length to expand when a group is chasing a score or replaying a level. That is useful for a party, but it also means checking charging plans and controller availability before starting. Verify the live page for local and online requirements rather than relying on the badge alone.
It Takes Two
It Takes Two is the choice for a structured two-player campaign rather than drop-in party rounds. Its variety keeps a pair engaged, but the game asks both players to stay involved, so this is less suitable for a quick solo break. Confirm how the current Steam edition handles local versus online play and whether any account or launcher step appears in the compatibility panel.
The more elaborate 3D presentation makes it a different battery and performance proposition from Vampire Survivors or Castle Crashers. No universal Deck runtime should be promised; use your own frame-rate and brightness settings, and test a representative busy scene before planning a long trip around it.
Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 remains a natural match for players who want repeatable first-person action with friends. The physical controls are familiar, but aiming comfort is personal: check stick sensitivity, trigger reach and the visibility of teammate or objective information. Multiplayer is central to the appeal, so inspect the current online requirements and connection caveats before purchasing for a group.

Its older 3D technology is generally easier to accommodate than a new, visually heavier release, but a four-player session can last much longer than a single campaign chapter. Plan storage, charging and network access around the way you actually play rather than around the compatibility symbol.
Golf With Your Friends
Golf With Your Friends is suited to short competitive rounds where players can take turns and pause between holes. The control scheme is simple, making it a good candidate for handheld play, while lobbies, scores and course information are the text elements worth checking at normal screen distance. The key caveat is multiplayer: verify the required connection and party size for your group on the live page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best long-form RPG and strategy choices
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
This is the pick for players who want a deep role-playing campaign rather than a collection of tiny sessions. Exploration, quests, dialogue and turn-based combat create many natural stopping points, but the game also presents inventories, character sheets and ability lists that demand good text scaling and reliable cursor navigation.
Use the Steam Deck Compatibility panel as a checklist. If it identifies a manual control adjustment, apply it before investing in a character build. A long 3D campaign is a larger battery commitment than a simple arcade title, and cooperative play adds another online consideration. Confirm the current edition, supported mode and any required setup on the store page.
Age of Wonders 4
Age of Wonders 4 is the strategy recommendation for players who prefer turns, planning and a campaign that can be paused. The advantage on a handheld is control over tempo: you can stop after a decision rather than leaving an action sequence unfinished. The challenge is information density. Map labels, tooltips and empire-management menus are more important than raw button count, so test readability before settling into a long session.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A detailed 3D map can demand more than a minimalist 2D game even when the turn-based structure feels relaxed. Check the current compatibility note, campaign and multiplayer options, and any account or launcher requirement before buying for a group.
Mortal Kombat 11
Mortal Kombat 11 fits players who want focused matches, training and a more cinematic fighting presentation. A controller is the right starting point, and the decisive test is whether inputs register comfortably on the built-in controls. Story menus and move information should also be legible without leaning close to the screen.
Its 3D effects and online features make it a different purchase from a small indie game. Confirm the edition and online requirements, then run a training match and one busy fight after installation. That practical test reveals more about your comfort, brightness and battery settings than a generic runtime claim.

A note on additional recommendations
Current editorial lists also highlight Cult of the Lamb and its Woolhaven expansion as strong Deck options. Treat that as a separate discovery lead rather than proof of a particular badge: open the individual Steam page and confirm its current Verified or Playable label, edition and expansion requirements before adding it to your shortlist.
How to choose between Verified and Playable
Choose Verified when setup time matters
Verified is the better filter for a first purchase, a family library or a trip where you will not have time to troubleshoot. It is the closest thing Valve offers to a low-friction recommendation. You should still check the mode you want and the current price, because the badge does not promise every peripheral, language or online feature.
Choose Playable when the caveat is acceptable
Playable can be the better value when the required adjustment is minor and you already know how to make it. A manual control change is very different from unreadable text or a launcher that complicates offline play. Read the unmet requirement, decide whether it affects your use case and test it immediately after installation while a refund or return decision is still practical under Steam’s current policy.
Common problems and fixes
- The game starts but controls feel wrong: reopen the compatibility panel, apply the suggested layout or remap the affected action, then test movement, camera and menus separately.
- Text is too small: check the game’s own display settings first; if the issue is the reason for a Playable label, decide whether playing docked or closer to the screen is acceptable.
- A launcher or sign-in interrupts launch: complete first-run setup on a reliable connection and confirm whether the game can subsequently start in the mode you need.
- Online play fails: verify that the game, edition and account arrangement match your friends’ setup; the Deck badge does not guarantee server availability.
- Battery falls faster than expected: reduce brightness, cap performance only if the game remains responsive and compare a representative scene rather than a quiet menu.
- A formerly good experience changes: recheck the live store label and compatibility panel. Valve’s ratings and the Steam catalogue are updated over time.
A practical buying order
- Start with Stardew Valley or Vampire Survivors if you want the least demanding introduction to handheld play.
- Pick Cuphead, Castle Crashers or Overcooked! for short, controller-first sessions with friends.
- Choose It Takes Two or Left 4 Dead 2 when online or local co-op is the main reason to buy.
- Move to Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition or Age of Wonders 4 when you want a campaign that can occupy dozens of deliberate sessions.
- Add Mortal Kombat 11 or Rain World when you specifically want demanding action and are willing to spend time testing controls.
The most reliable rule is simple: use Verified as the default, use Playable when its stated compromise fits your hands and habits, and read the individual Steam Deck Compatibility section every time. That approach turns a badge into a buying decision instead of a promise that the handheld experience will be identical for every player.
