Best Steam Machine Graphics Settings for Stable Zero Company Performance

Use a 60 FPS cap, AMD FSR upscaling, and lower the settings that tax the CPU before sacrificing texture quality. Start at 1440p output with FSR Balanced. If you are rendering to a 4K television, keep the 4K output but switch to FSR Performance. Set shadows, global illumination, reflections and post-processing to Low or Medium, and reduce Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail and View Distance when frame pacing breaks.

This target is realistic because Zero Company’s official 1440p/60 High specification calls for 32 GB of system memory and a desktop-class RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT. The 2026 Steam Machine configuration described by PC Gamer has a six-core/12-thread Zen 4 processor, an RDNA 3 graphics processor with 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM and 16 GB of DDR5 memory. Stable upscaled 1440p or 4K is therefore a better goal than native 4K High in demanding missions.

Recommended starting profile

Apply this profile before changing individual sliders. It is designed for consistent frame pacing rather than a high, fluctuating counter. Zero Company is turn-based, so a locked 60 FPS usually feels better than an unstable 80–100 FPS.

Setting Starting value Reason
Output resolution 1440p Good television sharpness with a lower internal render cost. Use 4K output only with FSR Performance.
Frame-rate limit 60 FPS A cap smooths delivery and avoids unnecessary GPU load; the game does not require twitch-shooter refresh rates.
VSync Off with VRR; otherwise On only when tearing or repeated stutter is visible Variable-refresh displays can handle synchronization without the latency of traditional VSync.
Upscaler AMD FSR It matches the Steam Machine’s AMD graphics architecture.
FSR quality Balanced at 1440p; Performance at 4K output These modes preserve more detail than dropping the display resolution while reducing internal rendering work.
Frame generation Off initially Generated frames do not remove CPU stalls and can add input latency. Test it only after the native frame rate is stable.
Shadows Low One of the quickest GPU-side reductions when the graphics processor is saturated.
Global illumination Low or Medium; disable ray-traced mode if present High and Ultra illumination settings are expensive in scenes with many lights.
Reflections Low or Medium Reflective sci-fi materials can consume substantial GPU time.
Post-processing Low or Medium Reduces effects overhead with a relatively small visual compromise.
Textures Medium Raise to High only when VRAM use remains comfortable; textures are not the first fix for CPU-bound stutter.
Effect Quality Medium, then Low if needed A reported CPU-heavy option and an early target for mission-start or firefight hitching.
Hidden Objects Detail Simplified Reduces the amount of concealed scene information the processor must manage.
View Distance Low or Medium Contained arenas make this mostly cosmetic, while shorter distances can reduce CPU work.

What the Steam Machine can realistically deliver

Valve’s Steam listing specifies a minimum of 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1080, RX 5600 XT or Arc B580-class GPU for 1080p at 30 FPS on Low. Its recommended specification for 1440p at 60 FPS on High is 32 GB RAM with an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT. Those are game requirements, not a guarantee that every PC with one of those parts performs identically.

The Steam Machine description published by PC Gamer lists 16 GB of DDR5 system memory, 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM, a six-core/12-thread AMD Zen 4 CPU and an AMD RDNA 3 GPU. The 16 GB system-memory capacity is below Zero Company’s recommended PC specification, and the compact GPU is described as a 110 W design. That combination explains why an upscaled image with controlled settings is a more dependable target than native 4K High. It is an inference from the listed specifications, not an independently measured Zero Company benchmark.

Set up the profile step by step

  1. Update first. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Updates and allow the latest game update to install. In SteamOS, open Settings and install pending system and graphics updates. Restart after updates so the new driver is actually loaded.
  2. Open the display and graphics menu. Set the output resolution to 2560×1440 for a 1440p television or monitor. For a 4K display, leave the output at 3840×2160 and plan to use FSR Performance rather than rendering natively.
  3. Set the cap before tuning quality. Choose 60 FPS in the game’s frame-rate limiter. If the display cannot refresh at 60 Hz, use the nearest stable divisor, such as 30 FPS, instead of allowing an oscillating uncapped rate.
  4. Choose synchronization deliberately. Turn VSync off when a working VRR display is connected. Without VRR, turn it on only if tearing is visible or frame delivery repeatedly breaks up; otherwise compare both settings for latency and smoothness.
  5. Enable AMD FSR. Select FSR Balanced for 1440p output. Select FSR Performance for 4K output. Check the image in a mission, not only in the pause menu, because fine geometry and effects reveal upscaling artifacts.
  6. Turn frame generation off. First establish that the game can hold the selected cap without generated frames. Revisit this switch only after CPU-heavy settings have been reduced and frame pacing is consistent.
  7. Apply the quality values in the table. Lower Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail and View Distance before reducing textures when the symptom is a CPU hitch. Use Low shadows, Low/Medium illumination and Low/Medium reflections when GPU utilization is the limiting factor.
  8. Test a repeatable scene. Load the same mission or an area that previously stuttered. Move through the opening, trigger a firefight and pan across reflective surfaces. Change one setting at a time so its effect is clear.

Choose between 1440p, 4K and 30 FPS

Use case Output and cap FSR mode When to choose it
Balanced default 1440p, 60 FPS Balanced Best first choice for a 1440p display and the clearest compromise between detail and consistency.
Living-room 4K 4K output, 60 FPS target Performance Keeps the television at its native signal while lowering the internal render resolution.
Maximum image quality 1440p, 60 FPS Balanced, with Medium GPU settings Use when the machine holds the cap and you prefer cleaner effects over extra headroom.
Heavy mission fallback 1440p or 4K output, 30 FPS Balanced at 1440p or Performance at 4K Choose this when busy scenes repeatedly dip below 60 despite the CPU and GPU reductions.

Native resolution is worthwhile only when the machine can sustain the cap in the areas that matter to you. FSR is not a defect to hide; it trades internal resolution for steadier delivery. In a turn-based game, consistent frame times generally improve camera movement and menu interaction more than a higher but erratic peak frame rate.

Find out whether the CPU or GPU is the problem

Signs of a CPU-bound frame

  • Hitches occur when a mission starts, new units appear, or a firefight fills the arena with effects.
  • Lowering shadows or reflections changes little, while Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail or View Distance helps immediately.
  • The GPU is not fully occupied during the slowdown, yet the frame-time graph shows long spikes.

When these symptoms match, keep textures at Medium or High if VRAM allows. Reduce Effect Quality first, then Hidden Objects Detail, then View Distance. The aim is to reduce simulation, culling and effect-management work rather than blur every surface.

Signs of a GPU-bound frame

  • Slowdowns appear while looking at dense lighting, glossy surfaces, shadows or volumetric effects.
  • GPU utilization remains near its limit and the image improves when the camera points at simpler geometry.
  • Lowering illumination, reflections or shadows produces a measurable frame-time improvement.

Use Low global illumination, disable ray-traced illumination if the menu exposes it, and set reflections and shadows to Low. Keep textures at Medium until you have evidence of VRAM pressure; texture resolution usually affects memory capacity and image sharpness more than CPU frame time.

When memory pressure is involved

The Steam Machine is described with 8 GB of dedicated VRAM and 16 GB of system RAM. If you see texture pop-in, severe hitching while turning the camera, or an out-of-memory crash after raising texture quality, return Textures to Medium and close background applications. Do not assume every stutter is a texture problem: the game’s published guidance identifies several CPU-heavy controls that should be reduced first for mission-start hitching.

How to stop stutter on SteamOS

  1. Confirm versions. Verify that Zero Company and the AMD graphics stack are current. Twin Suns Gaming reported that patch 1.1, released September 9, 2026, included crash, stutter and save fixes. A setting that was necessary at launch may be less useful after that patch.
  2. Apply the 60 FPS cap. Do this before making a dozen quality changes. An uncapped renderer can create uneven frame delivery even when the average frame rate looks high.
  3. Use the appropriate FSR mode. Balanced is the 1440p starting point; Performance is the 4K-output starting point.
  4. Reduce CPU-heavy controls. Set Effect Quality to Low or Medium, Hidden Objects Detail to Simplified and View Distance to Low or Medium when stutter clusters around mission starts or crowded firefights.
  5. Reduce GPU-heavy controls if utilization is high. Lower global illumination, reflections and shadows before touching textures.
  6. Retest after every change. Use the same save and camera route. If a change makes the image worse without improving frame-time spikes, restore it and test the next control.
  7. Verify files for launch failures. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. This is the correct first response to a crash or failed launch; graphics sliders cannot repair a missing or corrupted file.

Frame generation: when it helps and when it hurts

Frame generation can make camera motion appear smoother after the underlying renderer already produces a stable base rate. It cannot remove a CPU stall caused by effects, hidden-object processing or view-distance calculations. If the base rate is unstable, generated frames can make controls feel less direct while the original hitch remains.

Leave it off during initial tuning. Once the machine holds its cap in a repeatable mission, enable it as an experiment and compare input response, frame-time consistency and image artifacts. Turn it back off if aiming the camera feels delayed or if generated frames expose ghosting around moving units and effects.

Why Steam Deck settings do not transfer

Some Steam Deck guides report roughly 15–25 FPS at native resolution with heavy stutter and recommend streaming for many players. Those figures should not be used as a Steam Machine benchmark. The Deck uses a much smaller shared-memory envelope, while the Steam Machine is described as a desktop-class Zen 4/RDNA 3 system with 8 GB of dedicated VRAM. Deck articles are useful only for general SteamOS ideas such as enabling FSR; they do not establish the Steam Machine’s performance.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Mistake What you may notice Correction
Running uncapped because the counter sometimes exceeds 60 Uneven camera motion and frequent frame-time spikes Lock to 60 FPS, then evaluate consistency.
Using native 4K High as the first test Large dips in lighting-heavy scenes Keep 4K output but select FSR Performance and lower GPU-heavy settings.
Lowering textures before CPU settings Blurrier surfaces with the same mission-start hitch Reduce Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail and View Distance first.
Turning on frame generation immediately Smoother-looking motion but delayed input and unchanged stalls Stabilize the base frame rate before testing it.
Copying Deck numbers to Steam Machine Overly conservative resolution or an inaccurate expectation of 15–25 FPS Treat Deck guidance as SteamOS advice, not matching hardware data.
Changing many sliders at once Unclear cause of improvement or regression Restore the baseline and change one setting group per test.

What to expect after patches and driver updates

Game patches and graphics drivers can change shader compilation, crash behavior and frame pacing. Install them before judging a profile, and retest after a major update. Patch 1.1’s reported September 9, 2026 release is especially relevant if your original problem was a crash, save failure or launch hitch rather than a sustained GPU limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use FSR or native resolution on Steam Machine?

Use FSR Balanced at 1440p or FSR Performance with a 4K output. Try native rendering only after the machine holds 60 FPS in your problem missions; upscaling is the more dependable starting point for this hardware and the game’s demanding scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 60 FPS enough for Zero Company?

Yes. Zero Company is turn-based, so a stable 60 FPS offers consistent camera and interface motion without the latency and power cost of chasing a much higher uncapped rate.

Which settings are CPU-heavy?

Effect Quality, Hidden Objects Detail and View Distance are the first controls to reduce when stutter appears during mission starts, unit spawns or busy firefights.

What should I do if Zero Company crashes before reaching the graphics menu?

Update the game and AMD graphics drivers, then use Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Graphics settings cannot repair a missing or corrupted installation.
