For the broadest concealment, open your Steam profile, choose Edit Profile and Privacy Settings, set Game Details to Private, and enable the separate option to keep total playtime private. Then choose Invisible in Friends & Chat when you want to appear offline while retaining chat and your friends list. If only one title needs to disappear, use that game’s Mark as Private control instead.
Which Steam setting should you use?
Steam has several independent privacy and presence controls. The right combination depends on whether you want to hide your entire library, conceal a single game, remove your hours, or simply look offline. Use this table as a starting point before changing anything.

These controls can be combined. For example, Game Details can remain visible to friends while total playtime is hidden, and Invisible can be used at the same time to remove your online indicator.

Valve defines Game Details as the section containing the list of games you have purchased or wishlisted, along with achievements and playtime. The same setting also determines whether other users can see you as in-game and which title you are playing. It is therefore the main global switch for hiding game activity, not merely a preference for your library list.

Setting Game Details to Private removes that information from the view available to other users. It is the broadest built-in choice when you do not want friends or strangers inspecting your collection, achievements, hours or current title.
Game Details is separate from your whole profile
A private Game Details section does not automatically change every other profile area. Steam exposes separate controls for profile visibility, friends list, inventory and comments. Review those sections independently if your objective is a generally private profile rather than only a hidden library.
A current third-party guide also notes that account existence and ban status can remain visible even when a profile is private. Treat that as residual account-level visibility: making game details private is not the same as deleting the account or making every Steam record invisible.

How to hide your entire Steam library and activity
- Open your profile. In the Steam client or Community view, select your account name and open your profile page.
- Choose Edit Profile. This opens the profile-management screen rather than the library settings for an individual game.
- Open Privacy Settings. Locate the audience controls for your profile and its sections.
- Set Game Details to Private. This hides the purchased and wishlisted game list, achievements, playtime, the title you are currently playing and the associated in-game visibility.
- Decide whether to hide total playtime separately. Enable Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details when you want the aggregate-hours figure hidden while allowing a less restrictive Game Details audience. If Game Details is already private, this checkbox is an additional safeguard rather than a replacement for that setting.
- Save or confirm the change if Steam presents a confirmation control. Return to the profile view and use a logged-out browser or a trusted friend’s account to verify what another user can see.
Valve introduced the separate total-playtime option so that users could hide their combined hours regardless of the audience selected for Game Details. The checkbox therefore addresses a different disclosure from the library list itself.
How to appear offline without losing chat
Library privacy and online presence are different. If you want friends to see you as offline while you continue using Steam, open the Friends & Chat panel, select your status menu and choose Invisible.
Steam Support describes Invisible as an offline-looking status that still lets you view your friends list, send and receive messages and otherwise participate in the community. It is the practical choice for private browsing, testing a game or playing without announcing your presence.

Do Not Disturb is not a privacy setting for your library or presence. It suppresses notifications; it does not hide your Game Details, current title or online state. Offline is more disruptive than Invisible because it signs you out of Steam Community functions.

Use a private game when the rest of your profile can remain visible but a particular title should not appear in your activity. Steam provides this control per game, so you can repeat it for each title that needs separate treatment.
- Open your Library. Find the game you want to conceal.
- Open the game’s management or properties controls. The exact menu presentation can vary by Steam client layout, but the control is attached to the individual library entry.
- Choose Mark as Private. Confirm the change if Steam asks you to do so.
- Repeat for other titles. Privacy is applied per title; marking one game private does not automatically mark another.
- Verify from another view. Check your profile, recently played area and friends-activity view from an account that is not yours.
Steam says a private game is hidden from other users’ views of ownership, in-game status, playtime, profile, recently played list and related friends-activity events. This is more comprehensive than merely hiding a shortcut or removing a game from a visible favorites list.

Private, hidden and removed are not the same
Steam’s documented control is called Private. It changes what other users can see; it does not uninstall the game or remove your license from your account. A private title can remain installed and playable for you.
Do not confuse a private game with a local library-hidden game. A local hide action changes how your own library is organized, whereas Mark as Private is the control that removes the title’s ownership, status, hours and activity from other users’ views. If the objective is social concealment, confirm that the title is marked private rather than merely hidden in your personal library.

What other people may still see
Privacy settings limit the fields Steam exposes; they do not erase the existence of your account. A private profile can still have account-level indicators such as existence or ban status visible, according to the third-party guidance noted above. The practical implication is to define your goal precisely: hiding game activity is achievable, while making every trace of a Steam account disappear is not promised by these controls.

Likewise, privacy changes do not retract information another person already recorded. Friends may have seen an achievement, message, screenshot or activity event before you changed settings. The controls govern subsequent views supplied by Steam; they cannot control screenshots, external posts or a person’s memory of earlier activity.
Verification and troubleshooting
Your game list is still visible
- Return to Edit Profile > Privacy Settings and check that Game Details, not only another profile section, is set to Private.
- Check the profile while signed out or ask a trusted account to view it. Your own account may show information that other users cannot see.
- If only one title remains exposed, open that game’s library controls and use Mark as Private.
Friends still see you online
- In Friends & Chat, open the status menu and select Invisible. A private Game Details section does not by itself change your online indicator.
- Do not choose Do Not Disturb for this purpose; it controls notifications, not presence.
- If you selected Offline, reconnecting to Steam Community will be necessary before chat and the friends list work again.
Your hours are visible when you expected them to be hidden
- Enable Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details.
- Remember that a private individual game also hides that title’s playtime, while the separate checkbox controls the aggregate total when Game Details has a broader audience.
A recently played entry or friends-activity event remains
- For a specific title, confirm that the game itself is marked Private. Steam’s private-game definition includes the profile, recently played list and related friends-activity events.
- For activity across the entire library, set Game Details to Private and then verify from another account.
Some profile information is still exposed
- Review profile visibility, friends list, inventory and comments as separate sections; changing Game Details does not automatically set them all to private.
- Account-level existence or ban-status indicators may remain visible even with a private profile, as noted by third-party guidance.
A privacy checklist you can reuse
- Open Edit Profile > Privacy Settings.
- Set Game Details to Private if you need whole-library concealment.
- Enable the separate total-playtime option if aggregate hours must stay hidden under a less restrictive Game Details audience.
- Review profile visibility, friends list, inventory and comments independently.
- Use Invisible in Friends & Chat for an offline appearance with chat retained.
- Use Offline only when you intend to leave Steam Community functions.
- Use Do Not Disturb only for notification suppression.
- Mark individual games Private when concealment should apply to selected titles rather than the whole library.
- Verify the result from a signed-out or separate account view.
Bottom line on Steam privacy
Game Details is the central global control: setting it to Private hides the library information, achievements, playtime and in-game title that most people mean by game activity. The total-playtime checkbox handles aggregate hours separately. Invisible controls presence while preserving social use, Offline disconnects from Steam Community, and Do Not Disturb only quiets alerts. For a single sensitive title, Mark as Private provides the narrowest complete concealment, including ownership, status, hours and activity events.
