Choose a co-op game by checking three things before anything else: how many people can play at once, whether the exact platforms and storefronts in your group can connect, and whether the difficulty suits everyone. Then check each player’s hardware, online requirements, subscriptions, and copy requirements before buying.
1. Start with the group that will actually play
Count the people who need to join the same session—not everyone who might own the game. A game advertised as multiplayer may support fewer simultaneous players than your group has, or it may distinguish between local play and online play. Confirm the supported player count and mode on the current official product page.
- Write down the usual number of players for a session, including whether that number changes.
- Check that the game supports that many people simultaneously in the mode you intend to use.
- Confirm whether players can join locally, online, or both; do not assume that one mode implies the other.
For example, the official Deep Rock Galactic FAQ describes a four-player co-op shooter and says solo play is also available, with Bosco assisting. That makes it a plausible fit for a group of up to four, but it does not answer whether the particular editions your friends own can connect.
2. Verify cross-play for every platform and storefront
List each player’s device and, on PC, the storefront where they own or plan to buy the game. Then check the developer’s current cross-play information for that exact combination. “PC” is not always one interchangeable platform: cross-play may depend on the game version or store.

- DYNAMIC DUNGEON BUILDER: Modular tiles and evolving layouts create a new adventure every session. Double-sided cards become rooms or gear, so the map shifts as you explore. No two playthroughs are ever the same.
- TEAMWORK AND TACTICS: Choose from 8 unique heroes and work together in this fully co-op experience. Share loot, combine abilities, and coordinate strategies to survive enemies and defeat the boss.
- SMART CARD SYSTEM: Every card has two uses—expand the dungeon or boost your hero. This dual-purpose deck system drives deep decisions and exciting trade-offs with just three cards in hand.
- PLAY SOLO OR TOGETHER: Designed for 1–4 players, with solo rules built in. Whether you're flying solo or gathering your group, the scalable difficulty and quick sessions make it perfect for all setups.
- BIG FUN, SMALL BOX: Fast setup, quick turns, and replayable modes packed into a compact box. Perfect for weeknights, travel, or casual groups who want a dungeon crawler without the bulk or burnout.
Deep Rock Galactic is a clear example of why the details matter. Its official cross-play page says the Xbox One and Windows versions purchased from the Microsoft Store can play together and share progress, but the Steam version does not cross-play with them. So “PC and Xbox cross-play” would be too broad a description.
HELLDIVERS 2 provides a different example with a date attached. In an announcement published by Arrowhead Game Studios on January 9, 2024, the studio said PC and PS5 players can play together. That announcement establishes PC–PS5 cross-play as of its publication; it should not be read as confirmation of support for other platforms or as a substitute for checking the current listing.

3. Choose a difficulty the whole group can enjoy
Difficulty is a group-fit question, not just a test of the most experienced player. Ask the least experienced or least challenge-seeking person what they enjoy: learning through failure, a relaxed pace, or a demanding challenge. Then verify the candidate game’s current difficulty choices and any assist features on its official page.
Do not infer that two co-op games offer equivalent difficulty just because both have difficulty settings. The available settings and assistance features vary by game; check those details for the specific title and edition rather than relying on a general ranking.

4. Check hardware, online access, and subscriptions
For a group playing on PC, compare the game’s current minimum requirements with the least powerful PC in the group. If it falls below the listed requirements, that player may be unable to run the game reliably or at all. Deep Rock Galactic’s Steam listing identifies online co-op and lists minimum and recommended PC requirements.
Also check whether the mode needs an internet connection and whether a console platform subscription is required. Arrowhead’s January 9, 2024 HELLDIVERS 2 announcement notes that PS5 gameplay requires internet access and paid PlayStation Plus. Subscription policies can change, so verify the current platform and game requirements before purchase.

5. Confirm what everyone needs to buy
Before anyone pays, check the current edition, platform compatibility, player count, and copy requirements. Do not assume one person’s purchase lets the rest of the group join: whether everyone needs a copy depends on the game and platform, and the examples here do not establish a general rule.
- Make a list of every player’s platform and PC storefront, if applicable.
- Confirm the exact cross-play combinations on the developer’s current page.
- Check simultaneous player count and whether your intended session is local or online.
- Compare PC requirements with the group’s least powerful PC and confirm internet or subscription needs.
- Verify the edition and how many copies the group needs before anyone buys.
A practical way to make the shortlist
Use these checks in order. A game that fails a hard requirement—such as supporting too few players or not connecting the group’s platforms—can be ruled out before debating its style or difficulty. For the remaining options, compare the challenge level against the preferences of everyone who plans to play, then check the current official product information for missing details.
