On PC, use SteelSeries Sonar as the only active EQ and processing layer, keep the equalizer flat while you establish a baseline, then make small changes while listening to the games you actually play. Use Engine EQ instead on console or mobile, and do not run Sonar and Engine EQ at the same time.
For the microphone, give the Sonar mixer enough level for headroom, then control loudness with the mixer slider. In a quiet room, start with a low noise gate, automatic gate and noise reduction; aggressive values are the usual cause of clipped words, distortion and cut-offs. The procedure below covers routing, game EQ, voice processing and the fixes for the most common Aeon Pro problems.

What to use on each platform
SteelSeries separates its two equalizer paths. Sonar EQ is a PC-only application. Engine EQ applies settings directly to the headset, which makes it the practical choice for a console or mobile device. Select one path for a given setup. Activating both can apply processing twice, create unexpected tonal changes or produce poor sound.
| Where you play | EQ path | How to apply it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | SteelSeries Sonar | Set Windows and your games to Sonar devices, then tune Game, Chat, Media and Microphone channels independently. | Sonar is PC-only. Disable any competing Engine EQ profile that is also processing the signal. |
| Console or mobile | SteelSeries Engine EQ | Save a device-wide profile in Engine and use the headset with the platform. | Sonar routing and its separate PC channels are not available on these platforms. |
If you move the Aeon Pro between a PC and another device, treat the profiles as separate workflows. A profile that sounds balanced through Sonar is not evidence that the same processing should remain active in Engine.

Prepare SteelSeries GG before tuning
EQ changes are difficult to judge when the software is outdated or the headset is not being identified correctly. Complete the following check before changing a band or microphone control.
- Install or update SteelSeries GG. Confirm that the Aeon Pro appears in the application. SteelSeries GG release notes for version 121.0.0, dated October 6, 2026, list an Aeon Pro Engine calibration fix, so checking the installed version is particularly important when Engine behavior seems wrong.
- Connect the headset and verify recognition. Keep GG open long enough for the Aeon Pro to appear in Engine and Sonar. If it is missing, reconnect it and resolve the device-detection problem before making a profile.
- Choose your processing path. On Windows, use Sonar for the audio path. On console or mobile, use Engine EQ. Do not leave a second equalizer enabled merely because it contains a different saved preset.
- Keep a neutral reference. Start with the Sonar equalizer flat, or choose a neutral preset, so every later change has a known comparison point. Save that starting point before experimenting.
Set the Windows and game devices correctly
Sonar can only process the applications that are routed to its channels. A carefully tuned curve has no effect if Windows or the game is sending audio directly to another output.
Set the three Windows defaults
- Open Windows sound settings and set Sonar Gaming as the default playback device.
- Set Sonar Chat as the default communications device.
- Set Sonar Microphone as the default recording device.
The exact Windows settings page can vary by Windows build, but the device names should remain recognizable. After changing them, play a system sound and speak into the microphone to confirm that the meters in Sonar react.
Assign applications inside Sonar
In Sonar’s mixer, route the game to Game. Put Discord or another voice application in Chat, and put the Aeon Pro microphone in Mic. Sonar also provides Media and Aux channels for other programs or inputs. Keeping these categories separate lets you alter a voice call without changing game detail.

Check the game’s own audio menu
Many games let you override the Windows default. Open the game’s audio settings and select the Sonar gaming output if the game does not follow the system default. Open its voice-chat section separately and verify that the input and output are the intended Sonar devices. Play a known sound and watch Sonar’s Game meter; if the meter is silent, the game is still routed elsewhere.
Build a useful Aeon Pro game EQ without invented numbers
No official, universal Aeon Pro frequency curve establishes one set of “best” numbers for every game, room and listener. Sonar gives each channel a 10-band parametric equalizer and customizable presets, so the reliable method is controlled listening rather than copying a curve whose measurement conditions are unknown.
Use a flat baseline
Begin with all bands at their neutral positions. Listen to a repeatable section of a game that contains speech, movement cues and low-frequency effects. Note whether dialogue is easy to understand, whether directional sounds are easy to place and whether explosions remain comfortable. These observations are more useful than judging a preset after a few seconds in a menu.
Change one region at a time
- Choose the problem you are trying to solve: hidden footsteps, unclear speech, excessive bass impact or listening fatigue.
- Adjust a single band or a small neighboring group by a modest amount.
- Replay the same section at the same approximate listening level.
- Compare the change with the flat baseline, then keep it only if the cue is easier to hear without creating a new problem.
- Record what you changed in the preset name or notes so you can undo it later.
Large, simultaneous boosts make it impossible to know which change helped and can make the headset sound harsh. Small, reversible steps preserve a reference and reveal whether an improvement is real.

Choose a profile by listening goal
| Listening goal | What to evaluate | Adjustment principle |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive positional detail | Can you distinguish direction, distance and timing of movement sounds? | Reduce the masking that hides those cues, but reject any change that makes speech or high-pitched effects tiring. |
| Clear voice chat and dialogue | Are consonants intelligible when music and effects are playing? | Prioritize intelligibility over a dramatic tonal change; use the Chat channel independently when possible. |
| Immersive single-player sound | Do ambience and explosions feel full while remaining comfortable? | Keep low-frequency impact controlled enough that it does not cover quieter details or cause fatigue. |
| Long sessions | Does the sound remain comfortable after an hour rather than only sounding exciting at first? | Prefer modest changes and a balanced result over aggressive boosts. |
There is no requirement for the Game, Chat and Media channels to share one curve. A game can use a detail-focused profile while music uses a less altered profile, provided each source is routed to the intended Sonar channel.
Keep explosions, music and footsteps from masking one another
Masking is a relationship between sounds, not a defect that one preset fixes permanently. A bass-heavy explosion can cover a quieter movement cue; a sharp boost can make dialogue seem clearer while making effects tiring. Evaluate the complete mix at the level you normally use, not only a solo test tone.
- Test with the game’s own mix and dynamic-range options unchanged first. Otherwise you may attribute a game-mix change to the headset EQ.
- Compare a quiet conversation, a busy combat scene and a movement-only section. A profile that works in one scene may fail in another.
- Stop increasing a band when the cue is audible but the rest of the soundtrack becomes uncomfortable. More boost is not automatically more information.
- Keep a neutral preset available for games whose built-in mix already emphasizes the details you need.
Microphone settings for a clear Aeon Pro voice
Microphone quality depends first on gain staging and only second on voice processing. Sonar’s microphone path includes presets aimed at streaming, a compressor, a noise gate and ClearCast AI noise cancellation. Use those tools as starting points, then listen for artifacts rather than assuming the most aggressive setting is best.
Set gain with headroom
Set the device level high enough that normal speech has room above the noise floor, then reduce the Sonar mixer slider if friends hear you too loudly. SteelSeries explains that a 50% device level caps the maximum perceived level; at 100%, you can still lower the audible result with the mixer slider. The higher device setting therefore gives the mixer more usable range, while the slider controls the level your listeners receive.

- Use the Sonar Mic mixer slider to set the level heard by friends or a stream.
- Ask another person to listen during a normal conversation, not only during a loud test word.
Start gates and noise reduction low
In a quiet room, begin with low noise-gate, automatic-gate and noise-reduction values. SteelSeries cautions that high values can cause voice distortion. A gate that closes too quickly also removes the beginnings or endings of words, which listeners often describe as a microphone that cuts out.
Increase a gate only when a real background problem remains. After every change, read a sentence containing quiet words, pauses and consonants, then listen for missing syllables. If words disappear, back the gate or reduction down instead of compensating by speaking louder.
Try streaming presets as starting points
Sonar provides microphone presets such as Deep Voice and Clarity. Select one only as a starting point, then test it with your actual voice and room. A compressor can make quiet and loud speech more consistent, while noise cancellation can reduce a steady background. Both can introduce artifacts, so monitor the result through a recording or a trusted listener.

- Record a short sample with the preset and processing disabled or at their lowest practical settings.
- Record the same sentence with the chosen preset, compressor, gate and noise cancellation.
- Compare the samples for muffled consonants, pumping, robotic texture, clipped beginnings and room noise.
- Keep the least processed version that solves the actual problem.
Troubleshoot common Aeon Pro problems
“My Aeon Pro microphone sounds muffled”
- Confirm that Windows recording is set to Sonar Microphone and that the voice application is using the same input.
- Lower excessive noise reduction or gate values; aggressive processing can remove speech detail as well as noise.
- Compare Deep Voice and Clarity as starting points, then record both rather than judging from a preset name.
- Check the Sonar Mic mixer level and device gain. A low device level followed by heavy processing can make the voice seem weak and indistinct.
“My microphone keeps cutting out”
- Reduce the noise gate and automatic-gate settings first, especially in a quiet room.
- Speak a full sentence with pauses. If only quiet endings vanish, the gate threshold is still too aggressive.
- Confirm that the microphone meter remains active while the problem occurs and that the voice application has not selected a different input.
“Friends hear me too loudly”
Do not immediately lower the device level to 50% and lose available headroom. If the signal is clean, leave the device level high enough for normal speech and lower the Mic channel slider in Sonar. Recheck with a normal conversation after the change.

“The game EQ does nothing”
- Check that Windows uses Sonar Gaming as the default playback device.
- Check the game’s own output selection; an in-game override can bypass Sonar.
- Confirm the game appears in Sonar’s Game channel rather than Media or Aux.
- Make sure Engine EQ is not simultaneously processing the same device.
“The sound is harsh, distorted or strangely doubled”
Disable one of the EQ systems and return Sonar to the flat baseline. Running Sonar and Engine EQ together can create double processing. Then add only one change at a time and check whether the distortion follows a particular microphone or audio-processing feature.
“The headset is not behaving correctly in Engine”
Verify that GG recognizes the Aeon Pro and check the installed GG version. SteelSeries’ October 6, 2026 release notes for GG 121.0.0 identify an Aeon Pro Engine calibration fix. Reconnect the headset after updating and confirm that the intended Engine profile is actually saved to the device.
Validate and maintain your profiles
Save separate names for a neutral baseline, a detail-oriented game profile and any microphone profile you have tested. Change only one profile while troubleshooting so you know which setting produced the result. Revisit the profiles after changing a game’s audio mix, moving to a noisier room or switching from PC Sonar to a console or mobile Engine setup.
Recommended Free Tools
A good profile is the one that preserves positional information, understandable speech and comfortable effects at your normal volume. If a setting sounds impressive for a few seconds but causes fatigue, masks dialogue or drops syllables from your voice, it is not an improvement. Keep the flat baseline available and use it as the final comparison whenever a new preset seems dramatically different.
