Use ordinary chests for personal gear, consumables, quest items, and overflow that you want to retrieve manually.
The best Enshrouded storage layout at a glance
Design your base as a short production loop rather than as a collection of attractive but disconnected rooms. Put the Flame Altar and your principal crafting stations in one compact room or courtyard. Build the Magic Chest bank along one wall, preferably opposite the stations, so every label is visible while you move through the room. Keep the center open as a walkway and leave an empty section for future chests.

This arrangement solves the two problems that matter most. First, Magic Chest contents can feed Workshops, so materials are available where crafting happens instead of requiring repeated trips to a warehouse. Second, a single, readable chest bank is easier to expand and maintain than several small caches scattered around the base. Detached rooms can still hold specialty stations, bedrooms, farms, or decorative builds, but the central workshop should remain the logistical heart of the settlement.
- Core: Flame Altar, main crafting stations, and the primary Magic Chest bank.
- Access: one unobstructed walkway from the entrance to the stations and chest labels.
- Organization: broad material categories that remain useful as your inventory grows.
- Buffer: one intake or overflow chest near the entrance.
- Future-proofing: an empty wall, alcove, or adjacent room reserved for additional chests.
- Manual storage: ordinary chests near bedrooms, farms, personal work areas, or entrances.
Why Magic Chests should sit beside the workshops
A Magic Chest is not merely a larger container. Its important planning feature is that its contents can supply Workshops. That makes distance between the chest and the station a logistics question, not just a decorating choice. A chest bank beside the production line reduces the number of times you must carry materials by hand and keeps the crafting room understandable when several stations are operating together.

Centralization also makes category boundaries visible. If wood, ore, shroud materials, monster parts, and alchemy ingredients are all in one labeled row, you can scan the wall and select the correct source without searching bedrooms or unrelated buildings. The same arrangement gives you one place to audit when a material repeatedly runs out.
Do not interpret “central” as “the exact geometric center of the whole base.” The useful center is the shortest practical route between the Flame Altar, the stations you use most, and the chest labels. A compact courtyard can work as well as an enclosed room if the stations, chests, and walkway stay together.

1. Establish the production core
Start with the Flame Altar and the crafting stations that support your normal building and resource loop. Place stations close enough that you can move from one to another without weaving around furniture, walls, or decorative objects. The chest bank should face the stations or run along the adjacent wall, not sit behind them where labels and access are blocked.
2. Preserve a clean walkway
Leave a continuous path from the room entrance to the stations and along the chest face. The path does not need to be oversized, but it should remain clear when you add more stations. A chest wall that looks efficient on an empty foundation can become frustrating if later additions force you to squeeze between storage and workbenches.
3. Reserve expansion space immediately
Keep one wall section, corner, or second room empty from the beginning. Storage pressure usually arrives gradually: a category that needed one chest begins needing two, and a temporary pile becomes permanent. Expansion space lets you add a second chest beside the first without moving every label and station.
4. Keep the visual language simple
Use short, consistent labels such as “WOOD + PLANTS,” “STONE + ORE,” or “ALCHEMY.” A label should tell you what belongs inside without requiring a detailed inventory list. If a category needs multiple chests, use a predictable suffix such as “WOOD + PLANTS 1” and “WOOD + PLANTS 2.”

Wood and plant materials
Put common wood, fibers, plant-derived materials, and other basic harvests together. This is a high-traffic category for construction and general crafting, so place it near the center of the bank. If the chest fills frequently, add a second container beside it instead of moving wood into several unrelated rooms.
Stone and mined materials
Reserve a chest for stone, rock-derived resources, and mined materials that are not yet processed into ingots. Keeping raw mining output separate from finished metals makes it easier to see whether you need to gather ore or smelt what you already have.
Metals and ingots
Use a separate category for metal resources and ingots. These items are often consumed by different stations than raw stone or plant materials, and separating them prevents a finished material from disappearing into a large mixed “ore” pile.
Shroud materials
Give shroud-related resources their own clearly marked space. Shroud materials can be easy to overlook in a general monster-drop or mining chest, while their role in Magic Chest crafting makes a dedicated location useful as your storage system develops.
Monster parts
Keep creature drops and other monster parts together. A broad monster-parts category is easier to maintain than one chest per creature, especially when you are returning from an expedition with mixed drops.
Alchemy ingredients
Place ingredients used for alchemy in their own chest near the stations that consume them, while keeping the chest inside the same workshop bank. This category should be distinct from food because the two groups have different crafting purposes and different restocking habits.
Food and farming
Use a food-and-farming chest for harvested crops, food ingredients, and supplies associated with farming. If your farm is outside the workshop room, keep an ordinary chest near the farm for quick hand-off, then move durable stock into the central category chest during a maintenance pass.

Building blocks
Store construction pieces and building materials in a dedicated chest. This prevents a large building project from consuming the same space used for general resources and makes it obvious where to return unused blocks after a build.
Intake and overflow
Place one clearly marked intake chest near the entrance. It is deliberately temporary: unload into it when you return, then sort its contents into the category chests during your next maintenance pass. Treating it as a buffer prevents unsorted loot from spreading across the entire base.
Magic Chest capacities and what they mean for layout
The Official Enshrouded Wiki lists these capacities for the five Magic Chest sizes:
| Magic Chest | Capacity | Best planning use |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 24 slots | Early workshop categories, low-volume materials, or a temporary secondary bank |
| Medium | 32 slots | Growing categories that no longer fit comfortably in a Small chest |
| Large | 40 slots | Core categories with regular crafting demand |
| Huge | 56 slots | High-volume resources and categories serving large building projects |
| Enormous | 72 slots | Late-stage primary storage for a busy workshop core |
Capacity alone should not determine where a chest goes. A large container in a detached warehouse can be less useful than a smaller one beside the station if you must repeatedly retrieve materials by hand. Begin by centralizing the workshop and then replace or supplement lower-tier chests when a category becomes the bottleneck.

How far Magic Chests reach: the range caveat
Several Magic Chest tier pages describe an approximately 100-meter circular workshop range. The Enormous Magic Chest page instead states that its contents can be used directly in Workshops throughout the entirety of your Flame Altar base. These descriptions are useful for planning, but they should not be treated as permanent, patch-independent guarantees.
The Official Enshrouded Wiki storage page warns that reported Magic Chest ranges may have changed and that testing is needed. In practical terms, keep your main stations and chest bank together even if a nominal range appears generous. The cited material also does not establish how coverage behaves vertically, so do not assume that a chest on one floor automatically serves every station above or below it.

Safe placement rule
Use the 100-meter description as a planning reference, not as permission to scatter essential stations across the map. Build the core so every important station is plainly within the same workshop area, then verify coverage in your current game version before committing to detached production buildings.

When a detached room is reasonable
A specialty room can make sense for a farm, a decorative kitchen, or a station you use only occasionally. Keep a nearby ordinary chest for manual retrieval, and do not make that detached room the only place where a critical production step can occur until you have confirmed that the relevant Magic Chest and Flame Altar coverage works.
Magic Chests versus ordinary chests
| Question | Magic Chest | Ordinary chest |
|---|---|---|
| How are contents used? | Contents can feed Workshops when the chest and station are within the relevant coverage. | Items remain storage you retrieve manually. |
| Where should it go? | Beside or opposite the workshop stations in the central production core. | Near bedrooms, farms, personal work areas, entrances, or other places where hand retrieval is convenient. |
| What belongs inside? | Materials that your stations consume repeatedly: wood, mined resources, metals, shroud materials, monster parts, alchemy ingredients, food and farming supplies, and building blocks. | Personal gear, consumables, quest items, and overflow that should not occupy crafting-linked storage. |
| What is the main advantage? | Less manual carrying during crafting. | Flexible local storage without tying the item to the workshop organization. |
| What is the main risk? | Scattering chests or relying on unverified range can make coverage uncertain. | Using them as the main workshop warehouse creates extra trips and hides materials from the production flow. |
There is no reason to eliminate ordinary chests. They are the right tool for items you want at a living space, farm, entrance, or personal work area. The useful division is functional: Magic Chests support production, while ordinary chests handle local convenience and manual exceptions.
Three layout patterns compared
Most bases fall into one of three patterns. The comparison below uses the practical criteria that matter when you are deciding where to build.
| Layout | Station access and walking | Category clarity | Expansion | Range or patch resilience | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-room chest wall | High: stations and storage share one short route. | High when labels face the walkway. | High if one wall section is reserved. | High because the core stays compact. | The safest default for most bases. |
| Central warehouse with stations around it | Medium: access is good, but trips can lengthen as the room grows. | High if categories are grouped by wall. | High when the warehouse was designed for additions. | Medium: detached stations still need coverage checks. | A larger settlement with a dedicated storage building. |
| Distributed mini-banks | Low to medium: convenient only for the station beside each bank. | Medium to low as categories become duplicated. | Medium: each room may fill at a different rate. | Low unless every link is tested after changes. | Specialty rooms or deliberate local caches, not the primary system. |
A single-room chest wall wins as the default because it combines short walking distances, visible labels, and fewer coverage assumptions. A warehouse can work when the base is large, but keep the most-used stations near the storage face. Distributed mini-banks should be optional convenience caches rather than a requirement for normal crafting.
Step-by-step: build the storage core
- Choose the production footprint. Select a room or courtyard that can hold the Flame Altar, principal crafting stations, a chest wall, and a clear walkway. Do not begin with detached stations that you have not tested for coverage.
- Place the Flame Altar. Make it the anchor of the workshop area so future additions can be planned around the same base boundary.
- Set the station line. Arrange your main crafting stations along one side or in a compact cluster. Leave enough room to approach each station without crossing the chest face.
- Build the Magic Chest bank. Put it along the opposite wall or the adjacent wall, with the fronts facing the walkway. Keep the bank close enough that the workshop and storage read as one production zone.
- Install the category order. A practical sequence is wood and plant materials; stone and mined materials; metals and ingots; shroud materials; monster parts; alchemy ingredients; food and farming; building blocks; then intake or overflow.
- Label before filling. Put the label on the chest as soon as it is assigned. Empty labeled storage is easier to expand than anonymous storage that must be decoded later.
- Add the intake chest. Place it near the entrance, not in the middle of the production line. Its job is to absorb unsorted returns without becoming a permanent category.
- Mark expansion space. Leave a visible gap or empty room for the next chest bank. Do not fill every wall with decoration before deciding where the second row will go.
- Add ordinary chests where hand retrieval happens. Put them near sleeping areas, farms, entrances, and personal workspaces for gear, consumables, quest items, and temporary overflow.
- Test coverage before spreading out. If you add a detached station, verify that it can use the intended Magic Chest contents in your current version. If the result is uncertain, move the station into the core or keep a manual chest nearby.
How to operate the room without losing organization
Use a return-to-home rule
Every category needs one permanent home. When you take an item out, return the remainder to that same category rather than creating a second cache. This matters more than the exact wording of a label because it teaches everyone using the base where an item belongs.
Sort the intake chest on a schedule
Empty the intake chest whenever you finish a crafting session or return from a resource run. Move each item to its category, then leave the intake chest empty or nearly empty. A buffer that is never cleared becomes a second warehouse with no labels.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Split only at a real bottleneck
Do not create separate chests for every material on the first day. Add a second category chest when the original repeatedly fills, when a building project needs a dedicated supply, or when mixed contents make retrieval error-prone. Keep the new chest beside its parent category and use numbered labels.

Keep project stock visible
For a large building job, place the required blocks in the building-block category or in a clearly marked ordinary project chest near the worksite. Avoid hiding project materials in personal storage, where they are difficult to distinguish from general supplies.
Audit the high-traffic categories first
If the room feels disorganized, inspect wood and plant materials, stone and mined materials, metals and ingots, and building blocks before redesigning the entire bank. These categories usually receive the most frequent additions and withdrawals in a construction-focused base.
Progression: when to upgrade the chest bank
The sensible progression is to centralize the workshop first, then replace or supplement lower-tier Magic Chests as capacity becomes the constraint. A bigger chest does not repair a scattered layout, so solve the room and coverage problem before chasing the largest container.
Large Magic Chest recipe
A Large Magic Chest recipe uses one Large Chest, 10 Shroud Particles, and one Alchemical Base. Use that tier for a category that has become a regular production bottleneck, especially when adding a second smaller chest would make the wall harder to read.
Enormous Magic Chest recipe
An Enormous Magic Chest is crafted by the Carpenter and requires 24 Wood Planks, one Shroud Radiance, 15 Shroud Slime, and two Gold Bars. Its listed capacity is 72 slots, and its page says its contents can be directly used in Workshops throughout the entirety of your Flame Altar base.
Upgrade decision
- Upgrade when one category fills repeatedly and the overflow is no longer temporary.
- Add a matching chest instead when two distinct subgroups need to remain visibly separate.
- Keep lower-tier chests in service for low-volume categories instead of upgrading every container at once.
- Do not spread the stations farther apart merely because a higher-tier chest description sounds generous; verify the current coverage behavior first.
Troubleshooting common storage problems
Materials are not available at a workshop
- Confirm that the item is in a Magic Chest rather than an ordinary chest.
- Check that the station is part of the same practical workshop core.
- Move the station temporarily beside the chest bank to distinguish a range problem from an inventory problem.
- Because reported ranges may change between patches, test the arrangement in the version you are playing instead of relying on an old distance assumption.
The chest wall is hard to search
- Replace overly specific labels with the broad categories listed above.
- Group duplicate chests side by side and number them consistently.
- Move the intake chest to the entrance so unsorted items do not interrupt the category sequence.
- Keep labels facing the walkway and remove objects that block their view.
The workshop keeps expanding into storage
- Use the reserved expansion wall instead of moving the original bank.
- Keep the station cluster compact and place low-use or decorative stations elsewhere only after coverage is confirmed.
- Use ordinary chests for personal and project items so Magic Chest space remains focused on workshop inputs.
Overflow has become permanent
- Identify which category is filling the intake chest.
- Add a second labeled chest beside that category or upgrade it when the recipe and materials make sense.
- Move quest items, personal gear, consumables, and other manually retrieved items to ordinary chests.
- Keep the intake chest as a temporary landing point rather than renaming it as a miscellaneous permanent bin.
Using detached buildings without breaking the system
Detached buildings are useful for farms, bedrooms, decorative areas, or specialty workspaces, but they should remain optional branches from the central production core. The farther a station moves from the chest bank, the more important it becomes to confirm both Magic Chest workshop coverage and the Flame Altar boundary in the current patch.
For a specialty room, choose one of two approaches. Either keep the station inside the verified coverage of the central Magic Chest bank, or place an ordinary chest nearby and accept that materials will be retrieved manually. The second approach is slower but predictable; it is preferable to assuming that a nominal radius or vertical connection works when the available documentation does not establish it.
Do not duplicate every category in every building. Duplicated mini-banks create competing “homes” for the same item and make stock levels impossible to read. If a detached room truly needs local supplies, use a small, purpose-specific ordinary chest and restock it from the central bank.

- Is the Flame Altar part of the same compact area as the principal crafting stations?
- Can you walk from the entrance to every station and along the chest labels without obstruction?
- Are the Magic Chests in one visible bank rather than scattered by room?
- Do the labels use broad categories that another player can understand immediately?
- Is there a dedicated intake or overflow chest near the entrance?
- Is an empty wall, alcove, or room reserved for expansion?
- Are ordinary chests handling personal gear, consumables, quest items, and manual overflow?
- Have you tested any detached station instead of assuming its range or vertical coverage?
- When a category fills, will you add a matching chest or upgrade it without rebuilding the room?
If the answer to these checks is yes, the base has a storage system that stays fast to use as it grows: production remains centralized, labels remain visible, and expansion does not require a late-game rebuild.
