Start with Persona 5 Royal if what you loved about Bully was the school calendar, after-class activities, classmates and a long character arc. Choose Lost Judgment when bullying investigations and hand-to-hand action matter more than playing as a student. Detention is the focused choice for a short, oppressive school horror story, while The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and Fire Emblem: Three Houses turn school routines into fantasy or military RPG systems.
None of these games recreates Bully’s open-world schoolyard satire exactly. The useful question is which part of that experience you want to keep: daily routine, relationships, investigations, horror, field trips or tactical choices.

Persona 5 Royal: the best overall follow-up
Persona 5 Royal is the strongest recommendation when the part of Bully you miss is the feeling of living through a school year. Atlus describes its protagonist as being “forced to transfer to a high school in Tokyo.” That transfer gives the story a natural starting point: you enter an unfamiliar school, meet people over time and watch the protagonist’s life expand beyond the classroom.

- Explore Tokyo, unlock Personas, customize your own personal Thieves Den, experience alternate endings, and more
- Become the ultimate Phantom Thief and defy conventions, discover the power within, and fight for justice in the definitive version of Personal 5 Royal
- Choose between Japanese and English VO
Why its routine feels substantial
School is not just scenery. The game places class time and after-school decisions on a schedule. Your free hours can include movies, shopping, a bathhouse and part-time work, so the calendar becomes a chain of choices rather than a hallway you pass through between missions. Sports festivals, beach days, cultural festivals and field trips add larger events that mark the school year.
This structure is useful if you enjoyed Bully’s sense that school activities, friendships and trouble all occupied the same living space. Instead of wandering a schoolyard looking for the next joke or fight, you are deciding how to spend limited time and which relationships or activities deserve attention.
What kind of story to expect
The emphasis is on a long character arc and a broad social network. Classmates are part of a larger cast, and the calendar gives relationships room to develop across repeated meetings. The tone is more dramatic and stylized than Bully’s tongue-in-cheek school satire, so approach it as a character-driven RPG rather than a direct comedy sequel.
Who should choose it
- Players who want the most complete school-calendar experience.
- Anyone who values meeting classmates and spending time with them as much as action.
- Players comfortable with a schedule-driven structure instead of unrestricted schoolyard wandering.
Edition and date context
Atlus lists Persona 5 Royal’s release date as October 21, 2022. When buying, check which edition is available in your region and on your chosen platform, since availability can vary by market.
Lost Judgment: the closest match for bullying and physical conflict
Lost Judgment is the pick for readers who remember Bully primarily as a story about intimidation, misconduct and fights. SEGA’s premise places detective Takayuki Yagami undercover at Seiryo High School to investigate bullying allegations. The school conflict is therefore the central case, not a decorative setting.
Why the perspective matters
You do not play as a student trying to survive the social hierarchy. Yagami is an adult investigator entering the school to uncover what is happening. That shift changes the fantasy: you observe and investigate the school’s problems from the outside while still spending time inside its clubs and activities.
This makes Lost Judgment a better fit than a conventional school RPG if you want the bullying question treated as a mystery. Evidence, motives and consequences matter alongside the immediate physical confrontations.

School stories and clubs
The game adds school stories and club activities, giving the investigation a broader set of encounters. Clubs provide recurring school-life contact, while the main allegations supply a serious through-line. The result is a hybrid: part detective narrative, part action game, part school drama.
Trade-offs for a Bully fan
- Closer thematically: bullying and hand-to-hand action are explicit parts of the premise.
- Different viewpoint: the protagonist is an undercover adult detective, not a mischievous pupil.
- Different structure: investigations and school stories guide your time more than a free-form student routine.
Choose it when the words “investigate bullying” sound more appealing than “attend class and manage friendships.”
Detention: a concentrated school story with psychological horror
Detention is the right recommendation when you want the school setting to feel claustrophobic, threatening and historically grounded. PlayStation describes two students trapped at Greenwood High School in a fictionalized Taiwan during the 1960s martial-law period. The school is not a playground or a social hub; it is the pressure cooker in which the entire story unfolds.
What makes it different
The game is linear and atmospheric rather than a sandbox. Its tension comes from moving through a confined environment, discovering what happened and enduring psychological horror. The historical setting connects the students’ experience to East Asian history, giving the supernatural and emotional material a political backdrop.

When it is the right choice
- You want a story that can be approached as a focused experience instead of a long RPG commitment.
- You prefer dread, mystery and atmosphere to school activities or open exploration.
- You are comfortable with psychological horror and a setting shaped by martial law.
Why it is not a direct replacement
Detention does not reproduce Bully’s comedy, social freedom or routine of classes and clubs. Its connection is thematic: both make school the defining environment, but Detention strips away the playful school-life layer and concentrates on two students trapped in a frightening situation.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel: school life inside a military RPG
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a good choice if your ideal school game includes a class roster, field trips and a calendar, but you are happy for the institution to be military and the world to be fantasy. GamesRadar’s comparison highlights a military-school class, field-trip quests, a calendar structure and relationship building among classmates.
How the calendar works as a story device
The academic schedule gives the campaign a clear rhythm. You spend time with the class, then move into field-trip quests that take those relationships beyond the school. This alternation lets the game develop classmates through both ordinary school contact and larger adventures.
Rank #3
- Prepare for the award-winning RPG experience in this definitive edition of Persona 5 Royal
- This title is packed with beloved characters, confidants, story depth, and plenty of locations to explore with many opportunities to strengthen your abilities in the metaverse and in your daily life
- Explore Tokyo, unlock Personas, customize your own personal Thieves Den, experience alternate endings, and more
- Become the ultimate Phantom Thief and defy conventions, discover the power within, and fight for justice in the definitive version of Personal 5 Royal
That is the key similarity to Bully: school is an ongoing routine that frames the story. The key difference is scale. The conflicts belong to a fantasy military setting, and the combat is turn-based, so the schoolyard feeling is filtered through a traditional RPG campaign.

Class relationships are a major part of the appeal. If you liked learning who classmates were and watching a group change as the year progressed, the class structure gives you a comparable sense of shared progress. The bonds are presented within an organized military-school environment rather than a modern secondary school.
Who should choose it
- Players who want school calendars and field trips in a long-form RPG.
- Readers who enjoy class-based casts and relationship building.
- Players who prefer turn-based battles and fantasy world-building to real-world school satire.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses: the tactical academy option
Fire Emblem: Three Houses turns school life into a strategic management problem. Students belong to one of three houses, and you teach them while balancing battles, school activities and a calendar. GamesRadar describes the academy as a place where character bonds and consequential strategy develop together.
Teaching as the central school activity
Instead of simply attending classes, you are responsible for guiding students. The school calendar forces a balance between instructional time, activities and preparation for tactical battles. Every choice serves two purposes: improving the group’s readiness and deepening your understanding of its members.
Why the relationships stand out
The house system gives the cast a built-in social structure. Students share an affiliation, but the player’s teaching role makes those bonds part of the strategic layer as well as the narrative. Choices have consequences, so character development and battle planning cannot be treated as entirely separate concerns.
Where it diverges from Bully
The academy is a fantasy institution, not a modern schoolyard, and the main conflicts are tactical battles rather than improvised fights. There is no equivalent to Bully’s comic open-world mischief in the material covered here. Pick Three Houses when “school-life RPG” means mentoring students and making consequential strategic decisions.

If you miss the school calendar
Choose Persona 5 Royal first. Its classes, after-school activities and seasonal events make time itself part of the story. Trails of Cold Steel is the alternative if you prefer a military-school setting and turn-based RPG structure.

If you miss bullying investigations
Choose Lost Judgment. Its premise explicitly sends Yagami undercover to investigate bullying allegations, keeping the subject central while adding school stories and clubs.
If you want a shorter, darker story
Choose Detention. It is the most concentrated option, with two students trapped in Greenwood High School during a fictionalized 1960s Taiwan under martial law. Expect psychological horror, not comedy or free-roaming school activities.
If you want teaching and tactical consequences
Choose Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The three-house structure, teaching role, school calendar and battles make it the clearest choice for players who want school relationships tied directly to strategy.
If you want the nearest blend of action and school trouble
Choose Lost Judgment for hand-to-hand action and the bullying case, or Persona 5 Royal if the social calendar matters more than physical confrontation. They approach the same broad appeal from opposite directions.
What none of these games reproduces
Rockstar Games described Bully: Scholarship Edition as bringing “groundbreaking, original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling” to “the schoolyard.” That combination is unusually specific: a satirical school setting, free movement, social conflict and direct physical action in one package.
Persona 5 Royal expands the routine and relationships but is schedule-driven. Lost Judgment preserves the bullying investigation and fighting while changing the protagonist’s age and role. Detention keeps the school as the dramatic center but replaces humor with horror and freedom with linear progression. Trails of Cold Steel and Three Houses preserve calendars and student bonds inside fantasy or military systems.
